In his tenure as head coach, Sampaio has produced 23 national champions, almost half of the school’s individual national title total. Last season he led UND to its ninth North Central Conference team championship since he became head coach. He also led the UND men’s team to a third-place national finish and the women’s team to a forth-place national finish while coaching Sioux swimmers to five national titles in 2006. In his first season, Sampaio earned NCAA Men’s Coach of the Year honors, guiding the men to a second-place finish, just 22 points behind Cal State Bakersfield, which won its third consecutive title. The 22-point margin was the closest margin of victory since 1983. Under Sampaio’s tutelage, Rodrigo Cintra also became the first Fighting Sioux individual champion, winning the 1650 freestyle in an NCAA-record time of 15:07.80. Since then, his athletes have accumulated three national records. These records are held by Rodrigo Cintra (1650 freestyle), Janice Berry (200 breaststroke) and Rodrigo Ferreira (100 backstroke). Sampaio joined the UND coaching staff after spending three years as head coach of the Flamengo Swim Team in Rio de Janeiro, the winningest team in Brazil. During his tenure there, he coached some of the best Brazilian swimmers and led his squad to back-to-back national championships and eight South American records. In addition, he was the supervisor for the entire Flamengo swimming department, which consisted of 18 teachers and coaches and 2,500 swimmers per month. During that three-year span Sampaio also coached the Brazilian National Team and served as coach of the national team at the World Cup (1998, 1999, 2000), World Championships (1999, 2000), Pan-American Games (1999) and South American Championships (1998, 2000). Sampaio’s career as a swimmer spanned 19 years and was highlighted by first-place finishes at the 1982 and 1984 South American Championships, a fifth-place finish at the 1983 Pan American games and 10th-place finish at the 1983 World University Games. All were in breaststroke events. Maviael, a native of Rio de Janeiro, is currently pursuing his master’s degree in kinesiology at UND. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1986 from Tupa Physical Education University in Sao Paul, Brazil. Maviael and his wife, Ana, have two daughters, Manuela and Mariana. What is it that drives your team to constantly be among the top athletes year after year? A good recruiting process. We recruit quality student-athletes, that can come to UND and do good in the swimming pool and in classroom. The team is committed with hard work, and improvement. To be consistently on the top of something you have to work hard and smart, because you have a target on your back, and people always try to beat you. But we are able to have this kind of attitude on our teams. We have to work harder and smarter than our opponents, and we do. Every team has their challenges. What are some of them you feel the team will have to overcome this year in order to remain in the top of Division II? We have a very talented group this year. But they are very young, too, so we need to make them develop their abilities in order to reach their full potential. It is fun to have a group like this. We will build our season on a weekly basis, planning and analyzing it, and making the necessary adjustments as the season progresses. So, answering your question, our challenge this year will be to develop a young and talented group into a mature and competitive group. And I don’t think that this will be a very big challenge, because they are all very competitive already. mize all I had in order to be competitive, and that’s how I approach my swimmers. I like to make them smart swimmers, in practice and in meets. I try to make them understand as much as possible everything that involves the sport, so they have all the “tools” they need to be successful athletes. The schedule can be quite demanding for a swimmer with practices and travel, but your athletes always perform in the classroom. How is one able to master the skill of a studentathlete? Through a lot of commitment with everything he/she wants to do. As a coach, I am here to help them succeed not only in the swimming pool, but also in the classroom. Planning their days and weeks, knowing when they have to practice, study, rest, etc. That’s the key to be a successful student-athlete, and we try to help them out in any way we can. What is your outlook on the season? Very optimistic. I am very happy with the team we have this year. I believe that with the development of this year’s team we might have even better teams than we had last year. And that motivates me a lot. It will be a fun year!!! For 19 years of your life you were a swimmer. How do you incorporate your experiences into coaching? My experience as a swimmer is crucial in my coaching. I was a smart swimmer that knew how to use 100 percent of abilities toward swimming. As a “not so strong” athlete I had to maxi- Anneliesse Nelsen, who a member of the 2006 NCC Championship team, charges toward the finish line. 3 HEAD DIVING COACH BRIAN STROM BRIAN Strom Diving Coach 17th year at UND Brian Strom is entering his 17th year as head diving coach at UND. A native of Topeka, Kan., Strom graduated from the University of Minnesota-Crookston in 1978 with a degree in natural resources and from the University of North Dakota in 2002 with a degree in physical education. Strom began coaching at UND midway through the 1990-91 season and was named North Central Conference Diving Coach of the Year for that season. He won that honor again in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Twenty-one divers have earned have earned a total of 66 All-America honors at UND under Strom. In the summer of 2003, Strom was named the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association’s Female Team Coach of the Year. How do your divers stay focused at the meet? Each athlete will do things differently. Some divers like competing and others don’t. Some need to know where they are in the competition and to others that is the worst thing they can do. Some divers need to keep their game face on through the whole meet and others need to get completely away from the competition in-between dives. Divers generally only focus on one or two things each dive and it may be the same thing on every dive. Most divers need a good take-off and then just look for the water. Once you start spinning and/or twisting in the air you are relying on your motor program. You can’t change a lot in the air. UND divers always place in the top of their event. How are you able to coach such consistency? You work on consistency every day. In a meet you only get one chance, so you have to make the most of each dive. In practice you may do the same dive eight to 10 times in a row, but each dive will be a little different. Learning what to do with the little differences is the consistency piece. Not everyone can be a good diver. Is there anything in particular that you look for in an athlete when you are recruiting? Skills and the technical part can be learned if you are willing to take the next step as an athlete. I look for a diver who competes well. The mental part of competition is the hardest part to teach and learn. This is your 17th season coaching at UND. What is your favorite part about coaching that keeps you coming back each year? Coach Strom gives some advice to former Fighting Sioux diver Cristi Lindsey. What are your expectations on the year? We are a very experienced group this year. Everyone on the diving team has scored points at a national meet, even the youngest diver, Michael Hoenig, a sophomore transfer from Delta State. The bar is so high. If we can just keep placing divers in the NCC and national meet, we are doing our job. The student athletes and the many friends I have made over the years in diving. 5 ASSISTANT COACHES KASEY ANDRAS Young Fekete Assistant Diving Coach Second Year Kasey Young-Moseley, a 17-time AllAmerican and national champion for the Sioux, is in his second year as an assistant.
