Here we go again...shaking things up at the Cosmetology
Association! I’m a small town girl, born and raised in Reserve
Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. I started my career at the tender age of 3 when I was able to hold the kitchen scissors, but at
19 I made it official, enrolling at Breton Beauty College in Sydney.
I am both a Master Stylist and Esthetician. Coming from a large
background of teachers, I soon found the same interest and
applied it to my portfolio. I have been a Master Educator in both
my trades since 1996. I taught in other colleges before launching
Concepts Career College in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2000. Still
plugging away but slightly older than 19 now.
I have been a member of the board of Cosmetology Association
of Nova Scotia for many years so WHY VOTE FOR ME AGAIN?

My mission with the new Act finally in place is to

that will allow Nova Scotia College’s to deliver the

My career as a Master Hairstylist began 20 years ago when
I attended Dante’s International School of Hair and Beauty.
Certificate in hand, my entrepreneurial spirit took over and
led me to open a Salon on Sackville St., downtown Halifax
with by Business Partner at the time.
After working in this city for a few years, the urge to travel
became evident and I took off in search of different
experiences abroad. I arrived in my native land of Lebanon
and remained there for a few years; until a position with
L’Oreal Professional in Dubai summoned me to become
an Educator Manager and technical trainer throughout the
Emirates. My time with L’Oreal Professional Dubai led me to
travel throughout most of the Middle East as well as Europe,
providing trainings, seminars and personally attending many

conventions, trade shows, and Trainings; allowing
me to strengthen my skills. During my time in
Dubai, I also Co-Owned a salon as well as Ran a
distribution with a well known Hair Care Company
based in New York.
I have since returned to Halifax, an I am currently
located at Cosmo Salon, where I have maintained
a full loyal clientele for the past two years. I still
own complete Distribution rights in North America
as well as the Middle East for Rejuvenol, and
go back
maintain that business, as well as my work with
the Chair.
Being involved in my Association would give me
a lot of pride, and allow me to share some of my
experiences and knowledge; allowing me to apply
some of my acquired skills, and work side by side
with fellow Hairstylists and Estheticians to better
our association, regulations, and trainings that
take place in this province.

My fellow Cosmetologists;
We are entering a new era for our association. The new act will
give the members the necessary tools to enact the changes that
our industry needs to move forward and unlock the potential of this
career path we have all chosen.
I have been a hairstylist for over 30 years and I still feel passionate
about it. I hold a master instructor`s license. I’ve worked in Halifax
for most of my career, but also worked in B.C. and Alberta. I was
a Director on our cosmetology board for several years, but stepped
down to work internationally at sea.
I ended my cruise ship career managing the spa on Holland
America’s Maasdam. Working across Canada and with an
international team, has given me knowledge and understanding
COSMETOLOGY ASSOCIATION
of NOVA SCOTIA
of where we need to take this association so we
can continue to strengthen our position in the job
market and our communities.
Additional educational assets include certification for teaching adult training in vocational and
technical education, and courses in psychology,
management, sales and negotiation.
go back
I live and work in Dartmouth and can be reached
easily.
My enthusiasm for the industry and commitment
to working hard for this new board will make
voting for me an easy choice. Let`s join our minds
together and help this new board to be everything
we hoped for. We can be the envy of the other
provinces.

Iris
Harnish
Hi, my name is Iris Harnish and I am asking for your vote to be part of the Board of the
Cosmetology Association. I have worked for you in the past and now that we have a “New
Act” to work with I would like to see us move in some new directions. We are so privileged
to work in this wonderful profession, we are extermely talented people offering services that
make people look and feel better.
My vision for the future is seeing our Association as a resource and to support to you our
Members in different ways. For example we should work on providing continuing education
at a reasonable cost, this should be provided to all members, hairstyling, esthetics, make
up, and artificial nail enhancements. This should be planned ahead on a calendar year
starting in January thus making it easy for us to schedule for professional development. In
my opinion, professional development should be made available to those outside the metro
area as well.
Students and schools have special needs that should be addressed as well. We work in
sync with the Department of Education but there are many ways we could better support
our schools, educators and students to help further their success rate, this is a particular
passion of mine.
This is a new day and we are required by Government to follow new rules in the work place.
For example, on every shift we are now required to have a staff member to be fully trained in
first aid, we are required to have MSDS sheets on every product in our shops, from the
COSMETOLOGY ASSOCIATION
of NOVA SCOTIA
laundry detergents we us to every chemical we use in the salon
and as well we all are required to have eye wash stations. This
is not even addressing the requirements of Labor Standards
that we need to be fully aware of. Gone are the days of being
able to say, “sorry,I didn’t know”. There are consequences that
can be imposed upon us and in this age and economy none us
need extra dollards coming out of our profits.
These points barley scratch the surface of work that needs to
be undertaken by your chosen Executive, I am willing to work
for you the Members. I have been around for a long time (
thus my picture tells the truth of my age) but I have valueable
knowledge that has been gathered over the years that could
be used to put us in a stronger position in the future. I have
go back
worked behind a chair, I was a Salon owner, a School owner
and an Educater as well.
I have common sense, a strong sense of fairness and a love for
this wondefful industry that continues to drive me in this direction. We are a member driven organization and we can achieve
much together. I would appreciate your vote in the upcoming
elections. Thank you for taking the time to read this Bio.
God bless us all and may you have a happy, healthy and
prosperous 2013.

Malcolm
Norton
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the last six years, it’s that nothing worth
doing is easy.
My name is Malcolm Norton. And I’m asking for your vote.I moved to Nova
Scotia as a young man of 19, having trained with one of the top five salons
in London, England. I knew a lot about hair and not much about business.
Today I own one of the most successful salons in the Region, and I continue
to practice my craft behind the chair. Because I love this business.
Our industry is constantly changing. It was my honour and passion over the
past six years to be involved with your association, most recently as President
and before that Treasurer. It was a very busy time but it’s also been very
gratifying and time well spent. Look at what we’ve accomplished together!
We established a partnership with industry stakeholders, staging
enhanced and free AGM weekends that inspire and inform; we developed
free province-wide professional development events to ensure that
COSMETOLOGY ASSOCIATION
of NOVA SCOTIA
everyone benefits; I think it’s fair to say that we’ve
modernized the Association from the bottom up.
I’m proud of what we’ve done, from little things like a
friendly voice on the phone in the office, to big things
like ensuring our members are free to move and work
anywhere in the country; from member discounts, to
ensuring that our legislation is a true reflection of who
we are. Not the least of these being this online vote for
the Board by the whole membership, one of the first
associations to do this.
go back
Things have changed for the better, and I’m so happy
to have been part of that historic change. I also have a
vision for the future.
I see that there is more to be done, and I want to be
part of it. I have learned so much from all of you in the
last six years and I sincerely believe that supporting
one another will make us all stronger.
My name is Malcolm Norton. And I’m asking for your
vote to continue what I’ve helped to begin.

Samson
Hello fellow cosmetologists, my name is Tracy Samson and for the past 22
years I have been an active member of our association- first as a hairstylist,
then as an aesthetician and now I am both a hair and aesthetics instructor.
With a passion for this industry and the students entering the profession, I
became a member of the provincial examining and licensing committee of
which I was a member for four years.
Currently I hold the position of first vice president on the board and have
been fortunate to work with some amazing and talented individuals. Although at times we as board members don’t always agree, we all have one
thing in common: a passion for this industry and its members.
Building on that passion, I would like to serve a term as a director within our
new board and develop a new strategic plan to prepare us as we face the
future with a strong innovative direction, unified as a professional body.
COSMETOLOGY ASSOCIATION
of NOVA SCOTIA
Innovation, celebration and pride are some of the
words I would use to describe my time as a board
member.
As cosmetologists moving forward we need to
be “the change” and live the ideals we require to
excel. We need to take pride in everyday accomplishments and we all need to take the time to
savor the firm belief that we are all part of a fundamental shift in this profession.

It’s ours to decide…..be the change and together
we can move OUR vision of cosmetology forward.
I would be honored to stand with you and for you
to ensure that your voices are heard so that we
can all be proud of our association.
I look forward to moving this association forward
with you and would like to thank you in advance

Joyce
Treen
My name is Joyce Treen. I have been a fellow Cosmetology Association of Nova
Scotia (CANS) member for 29 yrs and over that time have served on the Board of
Directors 3 terms.
Having owned my own small salon in Eastern Passage for 27 yrs, I have seen a
great deal of change in our industry, both good and bad. I am proud to have been
one of the members of the Coalition that fought for change in our industry several
years ago. As a result of these battles, our present Association was born. I have
remained closely involved since that time. Great strides forward have been made
and I hope to continue to lead further changes for the
betterment of our industry.
In the fall of 2012, Government passed our new Act into law. This is a huge
accomplishment on the part of our Association and an example of the type of
positive change possible. It was a long road to get this new Act into reading and
then acceptance. I have learned a great deal through the process and am proud to
have been part of it.
COSMETOLOGY ASSOCIATION
of NOVA SCOTIA
CANS and its Board of Directors, over the past several
years have proven that hard work and dedication to its
members, can lead to positive change. I wish to be part
of this.
I have greatly enjoyed my time serving our membership
as a Board member in the past and would like to put my
name forward to once again serve as your representative
on the new Board. I feel that I continue to have more to
offer our membership and commit to put forward my full
efforts and energy to moving our industry forward in a
positive and professional manner.
go back
I would appreciate your support to continue to
represent you and our industry on the new CANS Board
of Directors. The world is constantly changing and
growing and so is our industry. We need an association
that will continue to move us forward into the future. I ask
for your vote to allow me continue to work for you as
your elected member and ensure that our association
continues in a positive direction.
Thank you for your time and interest in our wonderful
industry’s future.

In the past years I have served as
a Director with the Cosmetology

meetings to attend, and I have been a
faithful attendee for close to 20 years.
Most recently I have run the elections

view, are a positive move forward for
our Association and I am very excited
to be part of them.
