SLC Staff News – February 2016
STAFF NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2016 NEWS@SLCEK www.slc.ac.uk SLCek SLCek NOW IS OUR TIME 2 Celebrations began for the launch of our new building when staff joined the Principal and Student Association, ahead of the official launch this month, to cut a cake. The cake was expertly sculpted by Jane Boyd, Faculty of Business, in the shape of the new building. Everyone enjoyed a slice before heading over to the new building for a tour of the fantastic new facilities. THIS MONTH New Build Around the College Around The College Demalogica Therapists MASScot HND Beauty Therapy students have now completed their two stage Dermalogica training. Stage one was ‘The Dermalogica Skin Treatment’ and Stage two ‘Great Skin with Dermalogica’. Melanoma Action and Support Scotland (MASScot) raises awareness of melanoma. The students have been certificated and awarded the Dermalogica Therapist Badge and are now Dermalogica College Trained Therapists. Well done to all the students! The organisation provides free samples at indoor and outdoor events. Their education work involves taking MASScot into schools throughout Scotland. They deliver fun and interactive presentations to primary and secondary students and now colleges. Dughall, one of MASScot’s Education Assistants held several sessions within the College, delivering information on how to recognise changes in your skin, how to prevent skin cancer and how to advise clients if changes in moles or skin are recognised. Students from Beauty Therapy, Sport and Fitness, Hairdressing and Construction engaged well with Dughall and it was a fun, but serious information session. 1 Pamper Treats Why not take the time out to have a pamper session? The session began with a brief presentation from the Curriculum Managers from Care. Employers then had an opportunity to see our facilities and meet with staff to discuss collaborations, partnerships and ways in which we can enhance our working relationships. The event was a great success and staff fed back that they found it very beneficial. In attendance at the event were representatives from Salon Services and Capital Hair and Beauty, Pure Gym, Covey Befriending, Glenwood Family Centre, Northcare and Kirktonholm Primary School. 1 1 2 3 4 5 Great Britain Triathalon Team Chef lecturer, David Auchie and his son Marc have received a call up to the Great Britain Age Group Teams for the ETU Middle Distance Triathlon European Championships. Only 20 slots are available for selection in each age group with Marc representing the 20-24 category and David in the 50-54 category. Given the number of applicants from the UK wide it’s another wonderful achievement for multi-sport in Scotland. The race will take place on the 4 September 2016 in Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl in the Tyrol region of Austria and will commence with a 1900m open water swim in Lake Walchsee then a 90km cycle followed by a 21km run around the Kaiser mountain ranges. Congratulations to them both! 1 - 5 Faculty of Care 6 David Auchie 6 Around The College Chinese Delegation Visits Beauty Promotion Organised alongside our friends at Resource Efficient Scotland and the University of Saint Andrews, we were delighted to welcome visitors from various organisations in China to SLC . The group visited our new BREEAM 'Outstanding' building and discussed minimising waste and energy in newly constructed buildings. A huge thank you and congratulations to all of our Beauty students who arranged and took part in a promotional evening to showcase their professionalism, treatments and salons to their friends and family. The event was co-ordinated by our HND year one students to achieve a core unit as part of their course and our SVQ Level 3 students achieved a promotional unit as part of their programme. All other levels assisted and carried out treatments of their choice to promote their programmes, enhancing citizenship skills and employability skills. 1 Wella Training Seminar The MA Hairdressing group and their lecturers attended a seminar with Wella trainer Heather Robertson. The seminar focused on new products and application techniques with theory and demonstration in the morning session and hands-on practical application in the afternoon. Our chosen charity this year was1Kilbryde Hospice, East Kilbride and they joined us to support the event. The event benefits the Care Faculty greatly as it promotes our department and the treatments available across the Hair, Make-up and Beauty sections. 6 2 SLC WALKING GROUP A group of staff participates in organised walks suitable for all levels. Scottish Tourism Trip The HNC Event students are hosting a number of events in April 2016 in aid of charity. HNC Travel & Tourism students took a trip to Stirling Castle and Bannockburn. The Big Bollywood Cash In HNC Events team ‘Golden Nugget’ is organising the “The Big Bollywood Cash In” on Friday 29th April at the Langlands Golf House, East Kilbride. This glitz and glam fusion Bollywood and casino evening is all in aid of The British Heart Foundation. Come see our traditional Bhangra entertainment and chip in for charity on our grand casino tables. Tickets cost £12 per person, with doors opening from 7pm until midnight. DON’T BE LATE FOR IT’S A VERY IMPORTANT DATE! The class is taking part in a Scottish Tourism Product Knowledge unit and Stirling Castle and Bannockburn are featured prominently throughout. The students are learning about the history of some historic figures: Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Mary Queen of Scots. The visit to the castle consisted of a guided tour which explained the history of Stirling Castle and the famous historic figures associated with it. The students also got time to explore various areas of the castle. They then attended The Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre where the students took in a 3D experience. There was also a 3D Battle of Bannockburn re-enactment which explained in further detail the events of that day. It really did bring that day to life. 1 them an This was an excellent day out for the students and it gave opportunity to further expand their knowledge to enhance the unit they’re working on. It was a great outdoor learning opportunity and to learn in a 3D setting was equally as good. ‘UniqueSLC’ is holding an Alice In Wonderland themed party called the ‘Mad Planner’s Tea Party’ on Friday 22nd April at the GHA Rugby Club, Braidholm Road, Giffnock. By buying a £7 ticket you’ll not only be guaranteed a night of fun, you’ll be donating to the team’s chosen charity Alzheimers Scotland. The evening will begin at 7:30pm until 12:00am and consists of a raffle, DJ and games. 1 Dress up is optional, and don’t wait as it’s a very important date. Hope to see you there! Look out for more information about these events in a staff room near you or please contact the Events team in the Business Faculty for tickets. 2 1 Travel & Tourism students Around The College Pre-Apprentice on Track to Success Wienerberger South Lanarkshire College Pre Apprentice student Kyle Johnston has his sights set on not just competing at international level in cycling, but on studying closer to home at his local college. The Trowel Trades curriculum section recently invited Grant Softley from Wienerberger for a tour of the College. Kyle from Calderwood in East Kilbride finished 2015 with an array of podium positions both on the track and on the road. He was the first junior in the Scottish Cycling 25 mile Time Trial Championships and silver in the 10 mile Scottish Time TT Championships. He was part of the Scotland West Team, and travelled to Bilbao in Spain to compete in a 5 day event last summer. He was also junior winner of various road races throughout Scotland. Recently Kyle signed with Pro Vision Clothing Racing Team, the brainchild of ex-British National Road Champion, Steve Joughin. Wienerberger, is the world's largest producer of bricks and also the number one manufacturer of clay roof tiles in Europe, with 203 factories in 30 countries. Grant was impressed with the scale and quality of our provision and expressed an interest in developing a closer working relationship with the College. Following these initial conversations Wienerberger has recently supplied the College with 24 pallets of facing brick. Feedback from students has been extremely positive. Kyle, who has just turned 19, is now a first year senior rider and has had to increase his training schedule to include weekly training camps in Lanzarote. “The weather is so bad here I often can’t get out on my bike for days at a time.” “The College has been very supportive with me - I obviously want to be a professional cyclist but I also need to be looking at getting a trade behind me for the future. I’m studying various trades in the Pre-Apprentice Construction course: Roofing, Plastering, Painting, Bricklaying and, the one area I’m really keen on is Plumbing. The course, which is three days a week, allows me time to focus on my cycling and develop my career. By trying five different disciplines in Construction I’ve been able to eliminate the areas I wouldn’t like to get into, so far Plumbing seems to be an area I’m keen to pursue.” DHoF David McLaren stated, “as 1a bricklayer I understand the benefits of being able to develop craft skills whilst using bricks of such high quality. This most generous support has had an immediate impact on the standard of our provision.” Grant has pledged yet more support for the College and we look forward to receiving a consignment of marketleading roof tiles. “In the future, I want to stick with SLC and pursue a Plumbing course - get my SVQs in Plumbing and eventually start up my own Plumbing company, however I may have to take a break if I get the chance to ride for a professional team or compete at major events for my country. Fingers crossed!” 3 Scottish Timber & Crafts Event 2 1 1 - 2 Kyle Johnston 3 Brick workshop South Lanarkshire College 14 May 2016 Around The College Sports & Fitness Scholarship Success Level 5 Sports and Fitness students took part in a cardio tennis course which focused on tennis fitness. Congratulations to Hospitality lecturer Claire McEwan and HND Hospitality Management student Sharon Allardyce who’ve been awarded Hospitality Industry scholarships to attend one of the top hotel schools in the world in Switzerland for 5 days. Each student wore a pedometer to work out how many steps they took during the three hour session with the winner taking 3,400 steps! Claire and Sharon were delighted to win the award at a dinner in London and are one of only four lecturer places and twelve student places on the trip. Nestle Toque D’Or 2016 Sharon Allardyce HND Hospitality, Sonia Maughan and Michael O’Donnell both from SVQ 3 Professional Cookery represented South Lanarkshire College in the Regional Finals of the ‘Nestle Toque D’Or’ at City of Glasgow College. Regional finalists competing against South Lanarkshire College were Birmingham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Blackpool colleges. 1 The Level 4 Sport and Fitness students met Rachel Corsie, an International Women's footballer, who played for Glasgow City and Arsenal ladies. Rachel also plays and trains in the United States and told the students all about her footballing journey. 1 Chef lecturer David Auchie said, ’I’m so proud of what all of our students have achieved today, having qualified as one of 36 teams from the initial 132 colleges who entered at stage one’. The brief on the day was to observe the preparation and cooking of a starter, main course and dessert. The menu was only revealed to the competitors on the day. They then had to replicate these dishes as a team and serve to 10 invited guests, with wine, within a period of 2½ hours. Their menu was: Cushion of salmon with a broccoli puree, char grilled baby gem, pickled vegetables, pink grapefruit and shellfish essence Pot roast guinea fowl, roast vegetables, curly kale, hassleback potatoes and red wine jus Chocolate and lime mousse, lime curd, sesame crème patisserie, honey biscuit crumble and chocolate ganache 2 Press Photographer The judges were assessing each college on team work, communication, problem solving and the ability to work in a strange environment under the pressure of competition. The grand final will be in London. Lenny Warren, Press Photographer with the Daily Record and Glasgow Herald, gave a talk and advice to Photography students about careers in the newspaper industry. 3 1 - 2 Sports & Fitness students 3 Photography students 4 Hospitality & Professional Cookery students 4 Around The College Cheque Payments Investors in People We’re phasing out cheque payments and the College will be making payment by BACS only as of 1st March. The College is soon to be re-assessed to remain accredited as an Investor in People. This time we’ll be aiming for Platinum Standard for the first time. Our assessor, Raymond Boland, will be here from Tuesday 3rd May until Wednesday 11th May. He’ll be meeting with staff individually and in small groups, to see what their views are on working here. His job is to see if the way that we work is in line with the good practice detailed in the Investors in People framework. Cheque request paperwork should now be stopped and all payment requests should be submitted using the BACS requisition form which can be found on the Portal ("BACS Rec Form"). Authorisation is as before, i.e. via your Head of Department / Associate Principal first and then via the Principal or Depute. There’ll be a reference on each payment which the Finance Department will send by e-mail. It’s thus important that the BACS requisition form has this e-mail address. Payments will be effected much more quickly and you’ll find that our suppliers will welcome it. Birthday Time Congratulations to Aileen Berry and Graeme Forrester in Student Services who both celebrated big birthdays! In preparation for the assessment, Raymond has selected 40 staff from all areas of the College to participate in an online survey which will take place week commencing 29th February 2016. The survey will provide the College with valuable information and we’d encourage any staff members invited to participate to do so. All of the staff who Raymond has selected for the online survey have been emailed/contacted directly with instructions on how to complete the survey. 1 Raymond has also selected a further 40 staff for 1:1 discussions which will take place during the assessment in May. Raymond will then form a view on whether we meet the Investors in People criteria. We’ll meet with all members of staff selected for the 1:1 discussions to give them a briefing regarding Investors in People and how this links with the way we work, in April 2016. The Investors in People standard has changed significantly since we were last assessed and we’ve chosen to be assessed against the maximum number of criteria, in order to promote good practice in the way we work. If you’d like any more information on Investors in People, please contact Human Resources. SLC Benefits 1 2 1 - 2 Birthday time Watch out for your “Guide to Staff Benefits” booklet which incorporates all the benefits that you can access as a member of staff at SLC. Turbo Trainers are a static resistance platform; you attach the rear wheel of your bike to the unit and then you’re able to replicate the resistance and feel of riding outdoors, but from the comfort of your home or garage or college. What do I need? Bike with road tyres, water bottle, small towel. If you’re unsure about setting up your bike to a Turbo Trainer, watch the video at https:// youtu.be/9eSvdacQa0k or speak to Chris Meek or John McGinley who’ll help with initial set up. A Turbo Trainer gives a cyclist a great alternative to training outdoors in the dark, gloomy and often wet winter. By training indoors you can ensure that you retain fitness, perform a structured training session and you don't have to risk the danger or discomfort of riding on icy or wet roads. What’s involved? A Turbo session will basically follow a set training video at your own pace, this will usually be between 40 minutes to 1 hour duration. A Turbo Trainer is also a great tool for the time constrained training cyclist; allowing you to squeeze a productive session into a short space of time, when you don't have the hours to get kitted up and go outside. Sessions will take place Tues 4.35pm room G61 (to attend, email on the Monday of that week before 3pm.) Thurs 4.35pm room G61 (to attend, email on the Wednesday of that week before 3pm.) Book your place at ([email protected]) Places are limited to 10.
