The Scoop People rescuing animals...animals rescuing people® 925.256.1ARF www.arf.net Spring 2011 WALK TO SAVE LIVES AT ANIMALS ON BROADWAY SUNDAY, MAY 15 Whether you are celebrating the "Golden" Age of Broadway with your "Retriever" or you prefer "CATS," Animals on Broadway is for you. Join ARF as we celebrate 11 years of this free community festival with fun for the entire family, Sunday May 15 at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festivities kick off with a morning fundraising Pet Walk at 10:30 a.m. Walk nearly one mile around the Plaza to raise money to help ARF rescue more dogs and cats in need of a second chance. Stroll solo or form a Pack (three or more walkers), and bring your four-legged friends! Once you cross the finish line, head down the Plaza for a pawsitively delightful array of booths showcasing must-have pet products. Add a new furry family member from ARF's Adoption Mobile or one of the many rescue groups in attendance, or have your current canine lovingly lathered at the dog wash. ARF's People Connect booth will offer children's face painting and crafts. Visit the Pet Wellness Fair to find low cost vaccinations, micro-chipping and free services such as nail trimming, certified doggie massage, blood work and much more for a small donation to ARF. Last year, nearly 6,000 people turned out to the event, enjoying free music, reveling in the sun, and celebrating the special relationship between people and their pets. Gather up the family and join ARF and Broadway Plaza retailers for a fun-filled day—and don't forget to bring your "best friend". It's easy to create your own fundraising webpage or print a pledge form for the Pet walk today—visit arf.net for details! MITCHELL'S LIFE-SAVING HOPE It was Halloween night, and Mitchell was out in the streets with the other trick-or-treaters. He didn't have a costume, and he must not have crossed the street safely…because the black and white dog was hit by a car. Mitchell was abandoned, injured, in the night box at the local animal shelter. Talk about a scary night! Fortunately, ARF was making its weekly rescue run the following day. Team members took one look at Mitchell's dangling leg and knew ARF could help. The sweet-natured dog was loaded into the rescue van and taken straight back to ARF's veterinary clinic, where doctors discovered several fractures. Multiple surgeries were required to reconstruct his ligaments and install plates in his leg to secure the fractures. It would be a long road to recovery for Mitchell. A sling helped support the healing Australian Cattle Dog mix while he walked. ARF found a foster family to work with him throughout his three months of physical therapy, which was generously donated by Muller Veterinary Clinic in Walnut Creek. ARF's Hope Fund was established for animals like Mitchell who require extraordinary medical care. Without it, this wonderful, bright dog would never have had a chance to walk again, and would likely have been euthanized. Now fully recovered, Mitchell looks forward to a long and healthy life and Hydrotherapy helped Mitchell walk again the family to share it with: his foster caretakers became his adopters! Help give life-saving hope to animals like Mitchell by contributing to ARF's Hope Fund at www.arf.net. Spring 2011 LETTER FROM ARF’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Listen my children, and you shall hear The story of ARF's fine volunteers, Which began some twenty years ago When ARF was started without any dough. They helped give care, run events, and more For orphaned animals at the door. Why is ARF such a wonderful place? Because great volunteers make up the base! Volunteers share their talents and time, Ask for their efforts nary a dime. They serve ARF's needs, keep it up to date. The value of that is so hard to rate! Elena and Tony with ARF volu nteers Chesley and Lo rrie Sullenber ger April i s Nation al Volunt eer Month Called to duty, their response is quick; They feed the hungry, and heal ARF's sick. To try and measure would be a waste; No dollar value can ever be placed. What makes people serve as volunteers? Many reasons—some bring us to tears. Whatever reason to serve they see, They are the answer and always will be. There aren't funds enough to pay what they're due But we are so grateful for them—THANK YOU! pril is the purrfect time to salute ARF's volunteers and their inspiring dedication and tremendous example. Although it is very difficult to put a dollar value on volunteer time, the Independent Sector estimates it at $20.85 per hour in the United States. A “VOLUNTEERS ENABLE With 585 ARF volunteers providing 86,686 hours this past year, the value of their contribution to ARF's lifesaving work exceeded $1,807,403. Volunteers provide many intangibles that can not be easily quantified. They demonstrate the amount of support an organization has within a community, provide assistance on a wide Page 3 cializer r cat so e e t n lu o , ARF v Carol J. range of projects, and open their homes (and hearts) to the pets who need a little more time. ARF volunteers lead and deliver many of ARF's programs, ensuring that 90 cents of every dollar goes to programs. ARF's Thrift Store in Concord, CA is a stellar example of their commitment as volunteers ARF TO SAY Volunteers enable ARF to say "YES" to pets and people. If you know someone who may be able to help, we are always searching for more ways to say "YES." Please check www.arf.net for volunteer orientation dates, or to make a donation in honor of their invaluable work. "YES" TO receive, sort, display, and sell gently used items to fund the ARF Emergency Medical Fund®, which benefits low income people in our community who need professional care for their pets. Last year, the efforts of Thrift Store volunteers raised $114,521 to mend Sadie's broken leg, remove Mr. Cat's tumor, and treat Buddy's cough. www.arf.net PETS AND PEOPLE. ” TO OUR VOLUNTEERS: Thank you for setting ARF up for success! Your value is easily measured by the more than 21,600 lives ARF has saved these past twenty years. Executive Director Spring 2011 COMMUNITY INTEREST CLINIC EXPANDS SERVICES TO MEET COMMUNITY NEED Bear was found tied to a gas station pole with one eye bulging and nearly detached. The man who took pity on him was nearly homeless himself. Despite his concern for the dog, he couldn't afford to get medical care for Bear. Then he heard from a friend about the ARF Emergency Medical Fund® (EMF). He immediately applied for the program, qualified, and had Bear's damaged eye removed. Bear received a new lease on life. The past couple of years have seen a tremendous increase in demand for assistance from EMF. Last fall, ARF began an expansion of its clinic services in order to meet the community's need. With the addition of a second shelter veterinarian, as well as a Clinic Director to oversee administrative concerns, the clinic now offers another full day of EMF client appointments each week, with an additional day dedicated to spay/neuter for the general public. Without the help of EMF, Bear would likely have suffered without treatment, or been surrendered to a public shelter. Instead, Bear has a new lease on happiness and someone to share his life with! By preventing overpopulation through low-cost spay/neuter and keeping pets in homes with loving families, ARF is saving lives and reducing the number of dogs and cats in danger of being euthanized. To help ARF save the life of a dog or cat whose guardian is unable to provide urgent medical care, please make a donation at www.arf.net or visit the ARF Thrift Store in Concord, CA, where all proceeds support EMF. ROTARY CLUB GRANT PROVIDES SPAY/NEUTER In February, the Rotary Club of Walnut Creek and ARF partnered to provide two days of free spay/neuter surgeries for the dogs and cats of low-income Contra Costa County residents. A grant from the Rotary helped ARF assist families struggling during the economic downturn, keeping pets in homes and out of shelters, and reducing pet overpopulation. More than 40 animals were fixed as a result of the partnership. ARF clinic veterinarians in surgery. Page 4 www.arf.net Spring 2011 PEOPLE CONNECT THE MAKING OF A THERAPY CAT Cara Mia's Story When Joann Biondi was preparing to retire, she knew she wanted to do something with pets that utilized her professional experience working with the disabled for 40 years. One of Joann's colleagues was part of ARF's Pet Hug Pack with her therapy dog Kody, and Joann felt this might be right for her. She wasn't a dog person, however, and though she contemplated getting a dog, she knew it would upset her cats. Why can't I have a therapy cat? she wondered. During a tour of ARF, Joann noticed a beautiful longhaired tortoiseshell kitten. Their eyes connected, and it was instant love. She had white paws, a white underbelly, and the sweetest face imaginable. Her ARF name was Neapolitan; Joann renamed her Cara Mia, which means "my beloved" or "my heart" in Italian. Joann began taking Cara Mia to work, so she would become socialized and comfortable around people, noises, and activity. The kitten's inquisitive, responsive nature made her an instant hit. When staff would come to speak with Joann, their first priority was to hold Cara Mia. Joann was amazed watching her change people's attitude, body language, and demeanor. They would calm down and smile, no matter how serious or important their concern may have been. When Cara Mia was one year old, Joann took her back to ARF to sign up for Pet Hug Pack participation. The pair visits a facility for developmentally delayed adults as well as John Muir Hospital, participates in Kind Kids, ARF's after-school program, and makes special appearances at events such as Stars to the Rescue. Cara Mia travels in a pet stroller, and sits calmly on laps or by the bedside. She is particularly comfortable around preschool children because they are just the right size—at eye level! Cara Mia is now four years old. Her treat after therapy visits is a neighborhood walk on her leash-every few feet she rolls like a dog on the warmth of the concrete! Cara Mia is Joann's buddy, starting every day with a good morning lick on her nose or cheek, and always by her side helping with whatever task or project is underway. Recently Joann adopted another ARF rescue who touched her heart. Valentine, an energetic brown and white tabby, was abandoned at the BART station with severely burned ears. With Valentine's inspiring story of overcoming a tragic start in life, Joann hopes the spunky kitten can eventually join Cara Mia in providing therapy, smiles, and good feelings to others. The lovely Cara Mia. Joann and Cara Mia greet event goers. Valentine: future Pet Hug Pack member? DOGS AND CAT TEAM UP FOR READING ARF's Pet Hug Pack helped promote a love of reading to more than 1,300 children this March, with visits to 15 Contra Costa County schools in observation of Read Across America. The annual program of the National Education Association calls for children to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, author of The Cat in the Hat and other beloved children's books. Presentations included reading and Page 5 www.arf.net visitation time with therapy pets. Regularly reading to dogs significantly improves a child's skills, shown in studies made by the University of California, Davis, in partnership with ARF. Animals are attentive yet non-judgmental, coaxing even hesitant readers with their comforting presence. ARF's four-legged literacy advocates always enjoy a mission to promote learning! Spring 2011 COMMUNITY INTEREST THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN FOR ANIMALS Words from Elaine La Russa as ARF celebrates 20 years of saving lives. This excerpt is reprinted from an interview by Jessica Bucciarelli in the Winter 1999 issue of The Scoop. "There's a soapbox in this purse!" Elaine La Russa announces as she arrives for our interview. "I have very strong opinions—and ARF wouldn't be here without strong opinions." Elaine La Russa and Tony La Russa, partners in marriage for many years, co-founded the Animal Rescue Foundation in 1991. "ARF is what it is because of our different styles—we fill in the blanks for each other," she muses. "We both care about animals passionately. I have always connected with cats, even as a baby. Today, I'm still more of a cat person but I love dogs." Many of Elaine's strong opinions have to do with the interconnections between animals and people. "I dearly hope that animals can help turn around the mess that we've made of this world," she says. "Real animal people have known the value of animals for years—but it's underrated in society at large. We're just beginning to tap it. I'm bothered by humans' attitude of superi- ority to animals," she continues. "I'd argue that animals are in some ways smarter than people. For example, can you imagine traveling 1,000 miles on foot to get home after being abandoned in a totally unfamiliar area?" Elaine's attention to the philosophical issues doesn't stop her from doing the day-to-day work with animals. She comments, "Animal rescue isn't always pretty. Sometimes you literally have to get your hands dirty. No matter where I am, I simply have to stop and help when I see a dog or cat running loose in the street. I can't believe it when I see people just whizzing by—I think, 'doesn't anybody care about this animal?'" "We have an obligation to help anyone who's helpless or dependent, whether that's animals or people," she continues, "If we treat animals with the respect they deserve, maybe they will be to seem less disposable." When asked about the Evie incident—when a feral cat ran onto the Get unique eco-pet tips in April Page 6 ballfield—that led to the founding of ARF, Elaine recalls "I saw that terrified cat throwing herself against the plexiglass and I jumped into her body—I could imagine what she was feeling. I called Tony immediately. He told me that the front office had called animal control, and I thought, 'if they've killed this cat, I'm not forgiving any of you!' Fortunately, the cat was fine. Because all of this happened on national television, it raised a lot of awareness. It was the best thing that could have happened for animals." Martin Jr. Yvonne LeGear, Chancey Henneman A GIANT AMONG CATS Last September, ARF accepted fifteen fantastic animals from the Peninsula Humane Society, so they would have room to shelter pets displaced by the San Bruno fire. When Capizzi arrived, he was ready to share his sweetness and affection with good home. Adopter Betty was captivated by his charming personality. Capizzi made himself right at home with Betty and Blondie, her previous feline ARF adoptee, with whom he became instant bosom buddies. "Capizzi went right to work to train me. The recliner chair is now his!" reports Betty. "If he hears a can being opened (with a pop top or even a hand-crank can opener), he assumes it’s for him." Capizzi follows Betty Page 9 around and gets involved with her household tasks. At night he hops into bed and crawls under the covers to snuggle. Capizzi is a die-hard San Francisco Giants fan. He wore his Giants scarf throughout the World Series to see his team take home the championship, and appeared on KTVU's "Orange October" website of Giants' playoff photos. Now called Buster, this brown mackerel tabby plays staring games with the daily parade of turkeys past the window. "He stares; they stare back through the window. He chatters, and they gobble," Betty writes. "Blondie has the squirrel-watching job cornered, but Buster will want in on that action soon!" www.arf.net Spring 2011 IN MEMORY OF SPECIAL FRIENDS A.J. Page 11 www.arf.net Spring 2011 IN MEMORY OF SPECIAL FRIENDS GOING THE DISTANCE FOR LOVE Last fall the Lembke family discovered a sweet-faced Spaniel mix at a Central Valley shelter nearly 250 miles from their home in Marina del Rey. They were willing to go the distance to find a dog that was right for their family. They just didn't realize how far that might be! When the Lembke's arrived to adopt the tiny brown and white dog, they learned that she had just been chosen by ARF's rescue team to make the journey to ARF, where she would have a second chance at finding a forever family. So the couple drove another 150 miles to bring home their chosen companion. "I am thankful there are rescues like ARF that give wonderful dogs another chance," says her new mom, Tessa. Why go to such great lengths? "We knew that we could give her the love and attention she deserves," says Tessa. Regardless of where she is, Daisy Duck's playful demeanor keeps the Lembke's on their toes. "She has turned into quite the energizer bunny!" says Tessa. She amazes everyone by outrunning all of other dogs on the beach, and her natural curiosity helps her make friends with everyone…including the guinea pigs she shares a home with. Now named Summer, this lucky little dog is happy and content with her daily adventures. "We will continue to watch her grow and learn for the rest of her life," says Tessa. And keep her close, no doubt! Page 12 Jenna, Animal Hospital of Antioch Jennifer Lunden, Conchita Dieden Jenny, James, Claudia and Sasha McHale Jenny Stripe, Joyce M.
