Sherlock Seattle Con -- 3 Days of Fun.pub
S«Ù½Ê» Sãã½ CÊÄòÄã®ÊÄ: 3 DùÝ Ê¥ FçÄ The Sound of the Baskervilles* was a sponsor again of the Sherlock SeaƩle ConvenƟon in (where else but?) SeaƩle the weekend of January 9 to 11, 2015. This was the third such convenƟon, and it’s sƟll going strong and drawing aƩendance from all over the U.S. and Canada. So we “manned” a membership table in our usual spot—right inside the front doors of the Broadway Performance Hall—and, if nothing else, kept everyone wondering what the heck we were doing! We had daily quizzes created by our own Pawky Puzzler SOB Margie Deck and Club Lending Librarian SOB Sheila Holtgrieve. We awarded prizes every day. We sold door prize Ɵckets to raise funds for Sherlock SeaƩle 2016 and even provided vast amounts of treats one day in celebraƟon of Holmes’ 161st birthday! A Con-goer checks our message board Set Decorator Shannon filled the Diogenes Club with comfortable seating, an array of Mycrofts and unique details The prizes and rules for our daily quizzes SOB VP Kashena on the run Vendor Coordinator SOB Morag * The Sound of the Baskervilles is a Scion Society of the Baker Street Irregulars, which has served the Greater Puget Sound Region of Western Washington, USA Since March 31, 1980 We met lots of new folks and spent Ɵme with some of our old pals. We even got to host dinner one evening for, and spend some one-on-one Ɵme with, our new friends and the Con’s Guests-of-Honor: Tim Johnson, Curator of Special CollecƟons & Rare Books and the E. W. McDiarmid Curator of the Sherlock Holmes CollecƟons for the University of Minnesota Libraries, and Peggy Perdue, BSI, Curator of the Toronto Public Library's Arthur Conan Doyle CollecƟon. But while PFL David, Editor Terri, Club Librarian Sheila and Board Member Emeritus Al Nelson handled the membership table, they weren’t the only SOBs working on or playing at this Con. SOB Shannon Wallace was the set decorator for the enƟre Con, dressing the Diogenes Club, the morgue, the arƟsts’ alley, Scotland Yard, the auditorium stage— which served the “221B” programming track—and every nook and cranny around the building. SOBs Shannon and Al SOB Vice President Kashena Konecki served as game designer for the Con, providing an interesƟng brain teaser with her combinaƟon acrosƟc puzzle and scavenger hunt, but was also seen working in most every area and sƟll found Ɵme to be on the 3-SOB fandom panel (leŌ). SOBs Airy, Lauren and Kashena (l to r) at their panel, part of the programming track held in “Scotland Yard” SOB Lauren Messenger had a busy and constant presence and served as one of the two EMTs for the Con. That’s Lauren at leŌ. SOB Morag Logan supervised the Con’s Vendors Room, which was a busy spot for commerce. SOB John Longenbaugh was like the Road Runner—speeding this way and that every single day throughout the enƟre Con—acƟng as a panelist, a panel moderator and even a pugilist! He could be spoƩed at nearly every venue in the building. That’s John at right, with Club Librarian Sheila. SOB John Longenbaugh moderates a panel with GOHs Peggy Perdue and Tim Johnson SOB Airy Maher spoke on two panels: First, she held her own on the panel Ɵtled “Mr. Holmes & Dr. Watson on the Air” along side radio actors John Patrick Lowrie and Larry Albert, ImaginaƟon Theater’s Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Then with SOBs Kashena Konecki and Lauren Messenger, she parƟcipated in the discussion of the characters that made them Sherlockian fans and the collecƟons and interests that followed, on the “To Each Their Own: The Many Faces of Fandom” panel. SOB Airy with radio actors John Patrick and Larry (seated) and PFL David SOB James Romnes gave a lively talk to a large and interested group, while son SOB Bryan Romnes provided the a/v support, on the “Weapons of Sherlock” workshop. There were guns galore and James, a pathologists’ assistant at Overlake Hospital, looked right at home in Shannon’s wonderfully “decorated” morgue! We also welcomed our newest Members—Amy Plat and Marian Cole—who won 2nd place prizes in our daily quizzes and each received a 15-month membership in The Sound of the Baskervilles!! That’s Marian at right with PFL David (somehow we failed to get a photo of Amy! Sorry, Amy)! Above is Stormy Petrel of Vancouver, BC’s Sara Crauder with her wares The Vendors Room was bustling. We plied attendees with sweets for Sherlock’s 161st birthday at our membership table ALL day Saturday!! Lovely Ladies: SOBs Sheila and Shannon SOB PFL David Haugen reconnects with our long-time Canadian pal, Stormy Petrels of BC’s President Fran Martin We also met and spent some quality time with Stormy Petrel Krista Munro (left), who’s their new Petrel Flyer Editor!! Above, Steam Punker Carol. Above, SOB John Longenbaugh with the Guests of Honor. Below, Stormy Petrel Krista won our door prize—a basket filled with Sherlockian goodies! Not to be missed was Sunday’s “Shirtless Chaps Engaged in Many Enterprises” presented by a group calling themselves simply, “BWAHAHAHA”, and including our own SOB John Long enbaugh, who gave the intro. The crowd of mostly ladies went wild as the fellows disrobed and performed the marƟal art of barƟtsu, using all manner of weapons: fists, clubs, sƟcks and swords! Other SOBs aƩending the Con, not already menƟoned, were SOB Eli Edwards & hubby Brent. PFL David got a thrill at the Closing Ceremony when he heard the heart-felt graƟtude that Con Organizer Mimi Noyes expressed to the enƟre gathering for the support received from The SOBs starƟng with the first Con back in 2012. He also got to the take the stage when he presented to Mimi our cash contribuƟon to Sherlock SeaƩle 2016. A preƩy cool climax to a great 3-day event!
