EDITOR’S NOTE
After December’s somewhat disappointing start to summer, we have well and truly
embraced the heat of the season now. And with it, the ever present danger of
bushfires in our region. Please be aware that fire restrictions are now in force.
The wonderful and heroic work by our CFA blows me away. Over the last few weeks my FireReady phone app has been
alerting me to the many fires in and around Riddell, and some days the fire siren doesn’t seem to stop! In addition to the
families whose homes are at risk, I just think of those CFA volunteers and take my hat off to them. Thankyou.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and that families with school kids are lapping up the last days
of their holidays…stay safe everyone.

Waterwise advice at Sustainable
Living Festival
People struggling to keep their garden thriving
during the dry summer days can learn water-saving
techniques at a free workshop.
Western Water and MRSC’s Waterwise Solutions
for Sustainable Gardening workshops are being
held as part of the Macedon Ranges Sustainable
Living Festival in Woodend on Saturday 8 February.
Sustainable gardening expert Mariette Tuohey will
present the one-hour workshops at 11am and 1pm,
focusing on:
• Low-cost techniques for saving water in the
garden
• Practical ways to use water effectively
• Water-saving products
Although the workshop is free, participants will
need to pay the $5 entry fee to the festival. Places
are limited. Go to westernwater.com.au and look
for the link under “In the news”, to book.
Remember that the Macedon Ranges is under
Permanent Water Saving Rules, which means
watering systems can be used between 6pm and
10am, and a watering can, bucket or hand-held
hose with a trigger nozzle at any time. For more
details, check the Western Water website.
Chocolaterie in the Macedon Ranges?
At GREAT (Gisborne Region Events Activities and Tourism) we have
always held the view that Gisborne needs a dynamic drawcard to bring
people to the town and we believe we have found the answer.
A group from GREAT and others with a wealth of business experience
recently visited the Chocolaterie in the Yarra Valley. The overwhelming
view was that such an operation would be ideal for Gisborne, particularly
if this could be linked in a tourist sense, to say Hanging Rock.
The Yarra Valley business has been operating for 15 months and
reliable sources indicate that the original estimation of 400,000 visitors
per annum, is now averaging 600,000 per annum. Such an influx would
certainly flow on to benefit trade in the Gisborne area.
The Yarra Valley business currently employs 72 people, mostly parttime, on a seven day a week basis. Even more would be employed
during the construction phase.
A steering committee is presently being formed to move the
project forward.
We particularly need someone with large scale retail experience,
and a retired architect or someone well-versed in planning
commercial structures.
We are also looking for a substantial site, ideally close to the Calder
Freeway and near the entrance to Gisborne itself. Any ideas?
Those interested in being involved should contact Richard Whiteley on
5428 1410 or 0439 800 430 or [email protected]
GREAT will continue to support the project until a more formal business
structure is established.

Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony
The annual Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony were held at the Kyneton Town Hall on Sunday 26 January.
Mayor, Cr Roger Jukes, Deputy Mayor, Cr Graham Hackett and Cr John Connor presented the Australia Day Awards,
while the Australia Day Ambassador, Dr Stephen Silk made an appearance and said a few words.
Approximately 24 new citizens from the Philippines, England, China, India, Ukraine, Mauritius, New Zealand, Channel
Islands, Malta, Singapore, Iran and the Netherlands attended and are now proudly Australians.
Each new citizen is presented with a certificate of Australian citizenship; an Australian lapel pin; an Australian native
plant; and an Australian flag.
There was plenty to do in the Macedon Ranges on Australia Day. This year, 6 townships applied for and received Council
grants of up to $500 to host their various Australia Day events. It was very disappointing that Riddells Creek was one of
the only communities that did not participate with an application to seek funds for such an important event.
In Kyneton the Lions, Rotary and Zonta Clubs got together to provide a cooked meal while Kyneton’s RSL Club held a
flag-raising ceremony to honour the occasion.
There was loads of fun had at Romsey’s Skate Park where there was a a flag-raising ceremony and a free barbecue, and
kids enjoyed a jumping castle and face painting.
In Gisborne, once again the GREAT Association hosted an Australia Day celebration at the barbecue rotunda at the
John Aitken Reserve. The morning was filled with patriotic tradition, including a flag-raising ceremony, musical delights,
giveaways and games for all ages. A delicious breakfast was cooked by members of local essential services.
The Malmsbury Town Hall was alive with the atmospherics of Australiana and an antiques display. Attendees were
encouraged to participate in colonial times’ song and dance.
Those in Woodend enjoyed a classic Australian “morning tea” before playing some backyard cricket and listening to
the Kyneton City Band. There were games and activities as well as a popular barbecue lunch. Additionally the Woodend
Outdoor Pool was open with free entry.
Since 1996, the Baynton Hall Committee has held their Aussie film night at Baynton Hall on Australia Day. The
customary barbecue tempted the hungry movie-goers, while the Baynton Gift running race was open to anyone who
was willing to have a go.
Hanging Rock
Good news! There are currently four very healthy koalas (two mothers with babies) residing at Hanging Rock. So there
must be a dad or two nearby also. Given this, when weather and conditions in the reserve are safer, the official Koala
count will be relaunched. This is scheduled to happen during the September school holidays with the intention of
encouraging more families to become involved.
You may also be interested to know the powerful owls have two new chicks again this year.
The $3.14 million Hanging Rock Essential Infrastructure Development Project has commenced, with initial project
investigation and survey works well underway.
A cultural heritage consultant has been appointed to work in consultation with local aboriginal tribes, the Wurundjeri
and Taungurung, to develop a Cultural Heritage Management Plan for the project. Council will work closely with the
consultants and local aboriginal representatives in developing this plan.
In the meantime, to assist Council with the detailed planning required for implementing a project of this scope, a
feature survey of the reserve has also been completed.
Other project works that have commenced:
•
electrical supply options for connecting power to the east picnic grounds have been negotiated with the local
power supply authority.
• a contractor has been engaged to replace the existing footbridge in the main reserve.
• internal roads in the east picnic grounds have been resurfaced and new bollards installed, and
• approximately 1,500 native trees have been planted throughout the reserve, with more planting to occur later in
the project once other project infrastructure is in place.
The $3.14 million project received funding through the Australian Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund,
and also includes funding and project management support by Council, and contributions from Kyneton and Hanging
Rock Racing Club and the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
Macedon Ranges Regional Netball Complex
This project is progressing well with designs being finalised for the netball courts and car parking. Construction
is expected to commence in March. The Federal Government confirming their election commitment of $325,000 to
enable the complex to better cater for regional netball competitions. This commitment is still subject to a proposal
being acceptable to the Federal Government and a funding agreement completed. As a result, an architect will be
appointed soon to design the building component of the complex. Sport and Recreation Victoria, the Macedon Ranges
Netball Association and Netball Victoria have been kept informed of the progress.
Till next time, stay safe

This Month In My Garden
By Melanie Kinsey
The last report on the Furcraea was written in mid-November when it was still
in full bloom. It is now mid-January and the flowering ceased before Christmas.
Nothing happened for a while and then I could gradually make out the formation
of tiny bulbils along the flowering stems. These are now about 2-3cm in length
and I estimate there are hundreds scattered across the entire inflorescence. Each
one is producing a few tiny leaves and a bulb can be seen swelling at each base.
Some of the flowers appear to have been fertilised too, as there are half a dozen
swollen seed pods hanging from the stalks. The leaves of the mother plant are
now drooping vertically and it looks a sad and sorry sight, although all the bulbils
mean the promise of much new life to come. What an interesting process this has
been to observe! And it’s not over yet!
RR
OUR COMMUNITY
The soft-leaf buffalo lawn has stood up to
the (admittedly mild) summer so far and I
have only had to water it once. However in
anticipation of the soaring temperatures I
am going to water it tomorrow. If this was
a cool season grass lawn, I know it would
have needed much more water to stay
alive – I probably would have watered it
half a dozen times by now. And it looks
good. I gave it a feed in spring and it’s
been cut about three times and edged
once since then. I also spent an hour one
day with a daisy weeding fork removing
some flat weeds. Not too much work for a
great result in my estimation.
It’s a different story in the garden beds
where I am shocked to discover milk
thistles almost as high as me tucked
away in amongst the burgeoning foliage:
the result of a mild and damp spring.
Every time I go for a wander I pull a few out, but of course now they are seeding
and little puffs of thistledown detach and float away with every tug on the parent
plant. Petty spurge is another persistent weed, as is summer grass that seems
to germinate hard up against the stem of a wanted plant or beneath a branch
that rests on the ground. At least it’s easy to pull out – once you’ve been able to
grab hold of it. Don’t you hate it when you grab a milk thistle and it breaks off
just above the root where there is always a kink in the stem? Must be its defence
against humans because if you leave the bit of root behind it will regrow!
In the vegetable garden I am about to harvest a good crop of wombok that didn’t
go to seed and every day we collect a bowl of potatoes for dinner. The tomatoes
are coming on nicely as is the sweet corn and butternut pumpkins. Unfortunately
the cockies got to the apples on Christmas Day so very little to look forward to
there. I did count four apricots on the little tree, but we had to go away before
they ripened and of course they were gone when we got back.

Fire Danger Ratings
The Fire Danger Rating predicts how a
fire would behave if one were to start.
Ratings indicate how easily a fire can
start, how intensely it could burn,
how difficult it will be to put out and
how much damage it may cause. The
higher the Rating, the more dangerous
the conditions, meaning there is a
greater risk to control the fire, and an
increased risk to lives and property. The
Fire Danger Rating System includes
six ratings from Low-Moderate to
Code Red. The rating is your prompt
to take action to stay safe and to enact
your bushfire survival plan. During the
fire season, the Fire Danger Rating
will feature in weather forecasts, be
broadcast on radio and TV, appear in
some newspapers and will be visible
on the signs on either side of the road
in front of the Neighborhood House.
Total Fire Bans
Total Fire Bans are a legal declaration
to cease activities that may cause
fire. On days of Total Fire Ban, limits
are placed on activities that have the
potential to start a fire in hot, dry or
windy conditions including restrictions
on the use of some outside equipment
and BBQs.
Can I or Can’t I?
The CFA has a flyer to help you know
what you can and can’t do during
declared Fire Danger Periods, and on
days of Total Fire Ban, when fires in
the open air are legally restricted. A
copy of this flyer is available on the
CFA website or from the brigade.
Bushfire Survival Plan
If you live near areas that have
significant bush, forest, long grass, or
coastal scrub, then you need to plan
ahead for the fire season. Not everyone
thinks clearly in an emergency. A
written and preferably well-practiced
plan will help you remember what
needs to be done during a crisis. The
CFA, as always, will do everything they
can to protect lives and property. But
there is only so much they can do.
There will never be enough firefighters,
fire trucks and firefighting aircraft to
have these resources at everyone’s
back door during a large bushfire.
The responsibility for surviving the fire
season is shared between emergency
services and the community. We all –
including you – share the responsibility
for our community’s safety. To assist
in preparing your bushfire survival
plan is the Fire Ready Kit which is
available on the CFA website. This kit
has been designed to help you plan
for survival, beginning with the basics
of preparing before the fire season,
through to planning what to do if
fire is in your area and you cannot
leave. For more information see www.
cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/yourbushfire-plan
If you haven’t got time to sit down and
prepare a detailed plan at an absolute
minimum, you should talk with your
household through the 10 decisions
below, ideally before each fire season,
but most importantly don’t put it off
until later:
•
Which Fire Danger Rating is your
trigger to leave?
•
Will you leave early that morning
or the night before?
•
Where will you go?
•
What routes will you take – and
what is your alternative in the
event that a fire is already in the
area?
•
What will you take with you?
•
What do you need to organise for
your pets or livestock?
•
Who do you need to keep
informed of your movements?
•
Is there anyone outside your
household who you need to help
or check up on?
•
How will you stay informed about
warnings and updates?
•
What will you do if there is a fire
in the area and you cannot leave?
Remember to decide who will do what
as part of your plan.
Turn Outs
Since writing the December edition
of the Roundup in mid-November the
brigade’s volunteer firefighters have
been pretty busy responding to a total
of 25 calls. These have consisted of
three structure fires, one incident, one
alarm, seven non-structure fires and
13 grass and scrub fires.
Unfortunately it has been disappointing
that several of these calls have been
out to land owners conducting illegal
burn-offs during the fire danger
period. Fire restrictions came into
force on 23 December which means
that there can no longer be any
burning off without a valid permit. It’s
important to remember that lighting
a fire in the open without a permit is
an offence and can bring a penalty

Christmas has gone, and now it
seems Easter is not far away. I know
this because the Hot Cross Buns are
already in the shops. What a debacle!!
I hope you all had a happy and safe
Christmas, but of course now it’s back
to work. Keith and I had our usual 10
days at Bordertown. Keith was flying
gliders and enjoying the cool air at up
to 11,000ft, while we on the ground
sweltered. Never mind, a great time
was had by all.
We celebrated Roley’s 100th Birthday
in December at Seasons Bistro, and
it was certainly a most memorable
occasion - a lot of fun, and enjoyed
by all. CONGRATULATIONS ROLEY!!
Our Christmas break-up was once
again another great day, with a lovely
meal, lots of Christmas baskets full of
goodies and wonderful entertainment
from our very own local identity David Allen. Many thanks to the
Committee for all the hard work that
went into making it such a super day.
Our January trip to the Pokies in
Moama was great, with the usual
winners and losers.
Enquiries and visitors to our branch
are most welcome. Come along for a
“look and see” evening or ring Lorna
on 5428 7919 and one of the ladies will
offer to pick you up and take you back
home.
Till next time,

CWA
Happy New Year and a happy and
healthy 2014 to all Riddell Roundup
readers.
The 2013 year ended with a break-up
picnic at Stanley Park in Macedon.
The weather was glorious and
everyone enjoyed the day, the yummy
food and their Kris Kringle gifts.
Each CWA branch has a sister branch,
and the Riddells Creek Night Branch’s
sister branch is Ballarat Dinner –
also a night group. On Sunday 12
January, ladies from both branches
met at Stoney’s in Bacchus Marsh
for a delightful afternoon of good
company, good food and plenty of
chatter. There were six members from
Riddells Creek (from a membership
of 11), and eight from Ballarat (from a
membership of 26).
The branch members, along with
other branch members, are presently
knitting beanies for the homeless.
If readers would like to contribute
by also knitting beanies or donating
wool, we would be most appreciative.
The beanies are easy to knit and can
even be made whilst watching the
tennis! Call Lorna on 5428 7919 to
discuss pick up or drop off.
Our first meeting for the year will be
on Tuesday 13 February at 7.30pm
at the Neighbourhood House. At this
meeting one of our members – Melody
- will speak to us about her brother
who is a missionary, along with his
wife, in the slums of Manila. Hopefully
after this discussion the needs of the
mission will become one of our aims
for this year and beyond. We hope
to focus on assisting them with their
Better Birthing programme.
OUR COMMUNITY
to be most interesting as these two
books are so far removed from each
other. Please Look After Mother
is based in Korea and concerns a
mother who goes missing. Middlesex
is three generations of Greek origin
now living in America.
Our February trip is “around the bay”,
which should be a very relaxing and
happy one.

Red Cross
Hello folks. It has been quite a while
since I submitted an article to the
Riddell Roundup on behalf of the Red
Cross. We no longer have a Red Cross
Unit in Riddells Creek, but we do still
have a few Red Cross ladies who are
known as “Friends of Red Cross”,
and they are all ready to help if any
emergencies arise. I have joined the
Darraweit Guim Unit as a member - I
have time to be an Indian, but not the
time to devote to being a Chief.
Because March is known as “Red
Cross Calling” month, some of us will
be sitting out with our tins and hoping
to relieve you of any spare change you
would like to donate. It would be lovely
to meet some old friends, so come up
and have a chat.

Book Club
The Riddells Creek Day Book Club
members can all say they have at
least read something by Edgar Allen
Poe. Whether they all enjoyed or
not it is something else entirely. The
short stories in the book were quite
bizarre, so much so that they could
have been comical if they hadn’t
been so gruesome. Apparently Alfred
Hitchcock loved Poe’s gothic tales
and they inspired Hitchcock to make
his thriller movies.
During the summer break we get to
read two books, along with all the
other reading we manage to do.
We usually chat about the other books
we have also read during the month.
December/January we have Please

Anglican Church Op Shop
Happy New Year everyone, it’s a bit
old hat now though being February
already!
We reopened on 16 January and we
hope you noticed the little changes
we’ve made. What surprised us was
the fact that nearly everyone in Riddell
must have emptied their cupboards,
wardrobes and toy boxes over the
Christmas period, keeping us so busy
we don’t feel like we’ve had a holiday
at all. But that’s good news for you
because our shop has been filled with
lots of fresh and exciting surprises.
I know most generous people are very
considerate and donate clean items
and folded clothing, but we wonder
why a number of people don’t seem
to have any respect for their preloved
items and throw clothes into bags
(and a great number without bags)
scrunched up and crumpled into
balls, which to be honest we discard!
I ask you to make a resolution to
dispose of anything dirty, broken,
incomplete OR anything electrical by
putting them into your own rubbish
bins – PLEASE don’t use us as a TIP!
Well! I didn’t want to start the year
with a whinge but there you are, I
have.
We love to see our customers enjoying
their regular visits and catching up
with our volunteers and friends. If
you haven’t been in before, now’s the
time to do it. Our business hours are

Riding Inle Lake
By Lisa J Cole
We’re travelling east by bus leaving the temple city of
Bagan, Myanmar (Burma). The pot-holed-single-lanedual-direction road winds up and down mountains that
swirl stomachs. The monk who is sitting in front of us is
discretely vomiting in a black plastic bag. I have ours on
stand-by.
The view from the bus window changes somewhat from
flat, temple-strewn paddocks to lush, green mountains and
an abundance of fresh water. Inle Lake is an area of 116km
squared and sits between the Shan Hills. It’s a change of
scenery for the eyes.
The air is cooler here too, mountain homes are built sturdier,
and the people are as friendly as anywhere else we’ve been in Myanmar – smiling, welcoming and always saying
mingalaba (“hello” in Burmese) to us. The locals of Inle Lake live, work and play on the water. Homes and businesses
are built of wood, standing on long, thin stilts. Transport is by canoe, either motorised or paddle.
We hire a canoe with a driver for the day. We board a long, thin structure that sits the six of us on chairs with our
driver at the rear and we are taken out to see life on the
lake. We stop and meet a fisherman who shows us his
catch and his fancy footwork of skillfully maneuvering
his oar with his foot. Then he holds a large cone-shaped
net and balances it over his boat with confidence. He is
a real man of the water: living and working on the lake.
We continue on, the motor is revved up a notch, and we
pass taxi-canoes that transport 25 people at once. They
sit inside the hollow of the canoe, holding umbrellas
over their heads to keep the sun at bay. We slow down
and enter a labyrinth of narrow channels and on either
side we see the famous floating gardens. Tomatoes
climb stakes and spread out over the top of the water.
We stop at silverware and umbrella factories, but prefer
to be out on the lake with the breeze in our faces rather
than haggling shop owners. But then we make one last
stop, and I finally meet, face-to-face, women from the
Karen tribe, known as the long-necked women. This
cultural practice of the Karen tribe places thick, heavy
copper wires around young girls’ necks, lengthening them as they grow. It’s a practice many of the younger Karen
generation choose not to pursue.
The Karen women sit together in full dress: 15, 18, 50 and 60 years of age. On the table beside them sits a copper
necklace. We are told to pick it up,
and as we do we feel its true weight:
8kg! I can’t help but notice the
women’s drooping shoulders.
I’m telling myself this is really
happening, and I’m on the verge
of tears as my 14-year long dream
to meet a Karen woman comes to
fruition. We introduce our family,
shaking hands and smiling. We
sit down and talk. Our daughters
are timid at first as their necks are
noticeably elongated under the
golden wires, but that soon dissipates
with their genuine friendliness. The
shopkeeper tells us there are only
80 long-necked women left on earth,
and we had the privilege of meeting
four of them.

At our December working bee members undertook much brush-cutting, weeding,
pruning and mulching focusing on the picnic area and the Correa bed in the
upper region of Wybejong Park.
On 4 January, members weeded and watered all of our 2013 spring plantings.
There were only two casualties out of 400 plants, so that’s a 99.5% success rate.
Very happy! Guided by what has done well nearby, we chose plants which like the
runoff from the cliff, such as Lomandra, Indigofera, Goodenia and Hemp bush,
which we expect will do better than what was previously planted there in 2008.
Although Poa thrive elsewhere in the Park, this particular site seems to be too
wet for them.
We cut and planted willows which have sprouted in the creek and pulled out
Scotch thistles below the escarpment. The deliberately damaged rail near the car park entrance was mended as well.
Goodenias along the path were pruned.
As there is always so much to be done to keep this area beautiful and environmentally successful for all Riddell
dwellers (humans, creatures and plants), we would love a few extra hands to assist whenever possible. This year
we plan to let you know what will be required for the upcoming working bees. Maybe you can spare an hour or two?
The working bees begin at 9am in the car park opposite the bridge, and morning tea is shared at around 11am. The
Greening of Riddell members are a diverse group of nice people, all sharing the same goal of maintaining this town
asset for all to enjoy.
On the first Saturday in February working bee, (1 February) we will need to brushcut many areas, weed, water and pile
up fallen debris ready for a burn off when temperatures and restrictions allow.
* Just a reminder that there is a lovely picnic spot well worth visiting at the bottom of Rivergum Road, on the right
hand side just out of Riddell on the way to Gisborne. Here you will find a beautiful area with plenty of space for ball
games, parking, and a large picnic table under beautiful shady trees right beside the creek. It’s a lovely spot for a
special tea or a place to just enjoy the outdoors. Greening of Riddell has recently erected a new sign for this area of
Wybejong Park.

Farmers Market Update
***Next Market Saturday 15 February - 9am-1pm***
Happy New Year! We kicked off our
6th year with gorgeous weather.
Fresh local cherries were available,
as well as Sam and Jules joining
us from Half-Pint Vegan Dairy with
their spectacular ice-cream and
smoothies. Products so delicious
that they were sold out before
midday! Speaking of which Peelman Produce and Malcolm’s potatoes also sold
out too – January’s was a very busy market.
Macedon
Matters
Get Prepared for
Back to School
Safety!
Dhaba at the Mill (the scrumptious curry truck from
Kyneton) have joined as a regular at the market – I got
mine to take away for dinner. DIVINE. Make sure you get some in February.
The Australian Eucalyptus Company was back
again as was Alkira Organics with their stone
fruit. Dragi’s hydro lettuces are back, Alan
and Gillian were busy selling their respective
A-Grade meats (have you tasted what ethically
produced meat tastes like yet??) and Ilinka
was a favourite as always with her yummy
burek and scones.
Boonderoo Walnuts will be away from now
until April until the new seasons nuts are
available – we hope they get a little break as
well.
Josh from Josh’s Eggs was there (if you run out, his eggs are now available
at Foodworks), as was Gerrie’s preserves, Lyn’s honey, Karen’s olive oil,
Dean’s coffee, Bill’s wine, the other Bill’s hay, Elizabeth’s curry pastes and
pizzas, and Maureen’s Fudge.
Louisa from Shuki and Louisa’s Dips was noticeably missing – for good
reason too; she is celebrating the birth of her daughter Rosa, who we hope
to meet at a market soon.
Our Facebook page has now exceeded 1,000
‘Likers’ – are you one of them?
As the school year gets underway traffic
gets a little heavier on our streets.
People are back from holidays, school
buses are back and there are more
people walking or cycling to school.
Road
safety
around
schools
is
particularly important in the coming
weeks with some students going
to school for the first time. Drivers
should be aware of the changed road
conditions and speed limits around
schools and take extra care as children
return to school, especially in school
zones where children will be stepping
out of cars and crossing roads.
Children are easily distracted and may
not pay as much attention around
roads as they perhaps should. Young
children have not yet developed the
spatial awareness we have as adults so
I encourage everyone on the roads to be
alert and prepared for the unexpected
Slowing down and being vigilant is
crucial to keeping kids safe.
Parents also need to be alert when
dropping their children off at school and
ensure their child is in the appropriate
restraint for their age and size, obey
the parking restriction signs, keep clear
of the children’s crossings, and don’t
double park.
We look forward to our February market with
renewed energy. It is thanks to volunteers
that the market is able to run. Excitingly,
Ali Bant is now helping out and boy, are we
grateful for her enthusiasm and experience!
Thank you Ali!
Warm regards,

that ensures the best possible education for your child.
Memorial Garden
The new Memorial Garden, completed by Rotary, has been a huge project and is absolutely beautiful! Led
by Charles and Noelene MacKinnon, it is a wonderful job and a special tribute to all those who served their
country. Congratulations and thank you from everyone at Riddells Creek Primary School. It is now our task
to make sure the students present and future understand the significance of this special space, respect its
importance and look after and nurture the plants.
I am sure this will come to be a significant place for the whole of Riddells Creek community.

Share the Road in The Ranges
By Margaret Douglas
Bike Safe Macedon Ranges with RoadSafe Central Victoria is running
a community road safety campaign over the next three months. You
will see signs displaying a message to “Pass Cyclists with Care” on
roads throughout the Macedon Ranges. The messages also appear on
posters and displays in our towns, the posters inform both drivers and
riders of relevant road rules and the need to give each other courtesy
and respect.
Bike Safe Macedon Ranges invites local businesses to support our safety campaign by displaying safety posters on
their windows or our displays in their venues. Some businesses have already kindly committed to assisting us. Please
telephone our president, Margaret Douglas on 0407 759 860 if your business would like to support us in this way. Your
support will be acknowledged on our active Facebook page.
Drivers, please think about how vulnerable a cyclist is when passing them on the road and give them plenty of space
when overtaking. Their lives depend upon your patience and consideration. We all want to get home to our families safely.
Meditation, or
“Why Sitting With Your Eyes Closed For 40 Minutes Could Be One Of The Best Things You
Do This Week”
By Sarah Gardner
Meditation. We’ve all heard of it, and a lot of us (well, mostly men...) like to make cracks about levitation, naval gazing or
unfortunately, due to that TV ad, fish slapping.
However, to dismiss meditation out of hand is unfair. There are many, many documented and demonstrable benefits that
arise out of taking time out for a little while, including better sleep, better decision making, lessening of tension and
anxiety, improved coping mechanisms and more zest for life being just a few. Whilst for many of us, sitting in the lotus
position for 20 minutes to an hour each day is an unreachable dream, taking an hour once a week is do-able. And the
benefits are great.
Meditation, at its heart, gives the body, brain, mind and spirit a chance to slow down and sync with each other again.
We all get dragged from pillar to post by everyday living, no matter our circumstances. We all have the same demands
of being constantly “on”, constantly ready, most of us multi-tasking like our lives depended on it (and occasionally, that
might actually be true!). But to live in this state of constant readiness is wearing, on our bodies, our minds, our spirit ... and
it eventually leaves us in no fit state to serve ourselves
well, let alone our families, friends and workmates. We
become tired, scatty, unable to think clearly and prone to
get worked up over tiny things.
The Heart Wheel
Integrated Health
Once we start to make a space for us to collect ourselves
again, literally to allow all the parts of us to start working
in rhythm again, in a space where nothing is demanded
of us except to just “be”, we start to live better. Life gets
clearer, our spirit becomes rested and we feel nurtured. So
think about making some “Me” time this week. I promise
you, you won’t regret it. (Fish slapping is not compulsory!)

Rotary Ramblings
Happy New Year to all! We hope that 2014 is a safe
and happy one for you and your families. We also
hope that our CFA is kept very idle over the next few
months, especially in our locality.
Excitement has been stirring in our Rotary members
as we have been watching the initial stages of the
Memorial Drive landscaping take shape. After many
months our contractor was able to retrieve the boulders
from the boggy paddock, and following the end of the
festive season, landscaping was able to commence.
Our Landscapers were rather keen to get the job done
too as they were seen out in the extreme weather that
we experienced in mid-January. We are pleased to
report that the landscaping is now complete, and as
you can see from the photo, it’s looking great!
We had a break from meetings during January and are
looking forward to a combined meeting with Sunbury
Rotary where we will hear Father Bob McGuire speak.
It should be an interesting evening.
We look forward to seeing you when we are out and about and hope for your continued support throughout 2014. We are
always on the lookout for interested members. Remember you don’t have to come every week to be a Rotarian. If you are
interested in joining our club, contact our Secretary Charles MacKinnon on 5428 7411.
Riddells Creek Lions Club
Welcome everyone to 2014. We trust
you all had a very safe and enjoyable
festive season.
Lions were kept busy in the lead-up
to the New Year what with the Village
Christmas Party at the Lions Park on Saturday 14 December,
the Christmas Hamper raffle and Christmas Cake sales, as
well as a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings on Boxing Day.
We managed to sell over 100 Christmas Cakes this year, with
special thanks to Williamson's Supermarket and Webber’s
Nursery for their assistance. Lovely cakes they were too.
The Village Christmas Party was a great success and we
look to making this an annual event where you can relax
for a little while in between the hustle and bustle that is the
lead up to Christmas.
The lucky winner of the Christmas Hamper was Ian Barclay,
ticket number 750. We are led to believe he is still working
his way through it! We know many of you think winning a
Lions raffle is better than winning Tatts, so for all of you
that were disappointed in missing out on the Christmas
Hamper, do not despair. We shall shortly be on the street
selling tickets for our Easter Egg raffle...where there will be
three prizes up for grabs! We look forward to seeing you
all during April.
We have recently been able to swell our numbers with the
addition of five new members. They have already shown
themselves to be an asset to the community with their
involvement in previous community projects, so we know
they will be of great benefit to the Lions Club as well.
We take this opportunity to thank you one and all for your
generous support in all these activities.
If you feel you are in a position to give back to our
community through Lions, contact our membership
chairman Ian Arnel on 5428 6897 or arnie3431@bigpond.

Riddells Creek Girls Do Their Town Proud!
By Lisa J Cole
In December last year Riddells Creek netball girls Shannon Horton,
Ashley Cole and Sharna Ford spent a week in Sydney playing against
other state netball teams at the 2013 Indoor Netball Championships.
The competition was tough, especially in the humid conditions
and the girls were up against extremely tall Queensland players.
But the Vic Devils (aged 12 years and under) played strong and
hard, winning many of their games and making it to the semi-finals
against WA Storm.
Congratulations girls on such an amazing achievement - three
Riddell girls being selected to represent their state and giving it
their all. Well done!
Oval Works on the Reserve
If you have ventured by the Recreation Reserve recently you may have noticed that significant works have been done
on the Main Oval.
A combined operation by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, the Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, the
Cricket Club, the Junior Football Club and the Senior Football Club has resulted in close to $90,000 being spent on
upgrading the oval. Work commenced in early November and it is expected that the Cricket Club will be able to use
the oval in late February/early March.
Some watering is required during the day, and it is pleasing that residents have kept off the oval during the works
and particularly whilst watering has taken place. There were a few teething problems early on, but these have been
rectified by Western Water and the Shire Council, both of whom gave approval to use recycled water during the day,
to get the grass to germinate and grow. The oval is now only being watered overnight between 10pm and 4am.
To give the grass further time to develop, residents are now asked to keep off the oval until early March, when the
Cricket Club will start to use the oval.

BIG DAY OUT
By Lindsay Sharp - President
The Macedon Ranges Running Club (MRRC) is a
social, non-competitive, recreational running group
located in Gisborne, Macedon, Riddells Creek and
Woodend. It is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit Club
with the emphasis on getting together for exercise
in a relaxed atmosphere.
The major platform for the popularity of our Club
is our Start Running Group (SRG) program which
takes non-running participants to running 5km
non-stop in eight weeks, and 10km in 13 weeks.
The speed of running is irrelevant as the distance
covered is done so at your own comfortable pace.
The SRG program is suitable for all ages and fitness
levels by using a blend of walking with running to
manage the change in fitness and ability. The SRG
occurs twice a year with the first for 2014 having
recently started.
We are also trialling a predominately walking group
in Riddells Creek which does not have the ambition
of non-stop running goals, but rather intersperses
with short periods of power walking or running (your
choice). We are finding this to be an ideal program
for injury management or if a specific running goal
is not desired.
For those who already have the ability to run 10km,
we offer an Intermediate Running Group (IRG) or, for
those a bit faster still, an Advanced Running Group
(ARG). The IRG and ARG cater for runners targeting
specific Fun Runs or just wanting a regular run.
With the support of Cobaw Community Health we
are following the Healthy Club profile from Sports
Focus and are looking forward to a great year of
running.
We invite participation in all of our groups. Please

CLUB NEWS: The first stage of our new courts was completed
in May 2013. This year we hope to commence Stage 2 - another
three courts and to turn the shelter into a fully serviced clubroom.
The Club currently has two junior teams playing on Saturday
mornings; two teams playing in the Tuesday morning Woman’s
competition; and three (possibly four) teams in the mixed Thursday
night competition, commencing in February. If you are keen to play
or fill in for any of these teams, come along and talk to us. Group
and individual coaching is also available which, with our new court
lighting, can be arranged at a time to suit you.
We look forward to seeing you at our Big Day Out. We need new
members to sign up and boost our player numbers in order to
complete Stage 2 of the project. Register now!
