Village Hall Rededication
It is with sincere appreciation that on May 13th, I began my second
term as the Mayor of Lemont along with re-elected Village Clerk
Charlene Smollen, Trustees Paul Chialdikas, Clifford Miklos and
Jeanette Virgilio. We would like to thank Congressman Dan Lipinski
for presiding over the Oath of Office for myself and the re-elected
Village Clerk and Trustees. I can think of no better way to begin my
second term than to preside over the Rededication and Open House of
the renovated 120 year old Village Hall. Myself and the Village Board
were accompanied by past Mayors John Piazza, Rick Kwasneski and Joe Forzley, among
several others from the community to celebrate the occasion. I’d like to thank all of you who
joined us for the evening and special thanks to our local florists, Adam’s Flowers, Always
with Flowers, Lange’s Woodland Flowers and Petal Play Design Studio who graciously
adorned the building with floral arrangements and special touches to make the Village Hall
look even more welcoming and beautiful. Any resident who could not make the Open House
and would like to view the facility, please feel free to contact Village Hall to schedule a time
to walk through the building.
Mayor’s Drive for Charity
The Annual Mayor’s Drive for Charity was held at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club on April
29th. It was a wonderful day for golf and an even better day for Lemont charities and service
organizations. Over $38,000 was raised and will be put back into the community’s charitable
organizations. Thanks to all our volunteers, sponsors, raffle donors and golfers for making
this one of the most successful outings ever. Special thanks go to Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
for sponsoring the event. I had another opportunity to raise even more funds for the Mayor’s
Drive for Charity partnering with Tap House Grill on April 30. Tap House Grill donated
10% of the net sales for the day, and along with our 50/50 raffle, we increased the proceeds
even more. The distribution of the checks to these organizations took place at our June 24th
Village Board Meeting.

Mayor's Desk (cont'd from Pg. 1)
Road Construction Update
Throughout the summer, the Village is overseeing or assisting with several projects. The Village’s annual road resurfacing
program is ongoing and should be finishing up by the beginning of July. The reconstruction of the Walker/McCarthy/
Archer intersection (Triangle Project) has been in full force for several months and is progressing ahead of schedule,
including the opening of Derby Road a full month ahead of schedule. The Walker/McCarthy Signalization is awaiting
final coordination from the utility companies and will begin later in August and finish late fall. The Village will be
continuing its aggressive water and sewer main replacement/separation program. This season’s major projects include
the Ridge Road Water Main Replacement Project, the Division Street Water Main Loop to Custer Street Project and
the Porter Street Water and Sewer Main Replacement Project.
Another project of note is the drainage, entrance and pedestrian access improvements in front of the Lemont Park
District’s Centennial Building entrance along 127th Street. The Village has been working with the Lemont Park District
for several years on a Safe Routes to School federal grant to help fund the project. Work will begin shortly after the July
3rd festivities and the project will be substantially completed by the start of school at the end of summer. If you have
any questions regarding these projects or any other construction project, please do not hesitate to contact the Lemont
Public Works Department. The Village will be updating its residents on these various projects and future initiatives on
the Village website at http://www.lemont.il.us/roadconstruction.
Refuse Services
The Village’s contract for refuse, recycling and landscaping hauling services with Waste Management is coming to
an end at the end of April 2014. The Village is looking for resident feedback on the services being provided by Waste
Management as the Board and staff prepares to examine options for services going forward. If you have any comments
or suggestions on the quality and/or level of services currently being provided or recommendations for the future level
of services, please send them to the Village at [email protected] or (630) 257-1590.
Welcomes and Farewells
Finally, I would like to bring the community up to speed on several changes in key positions at the Village. After nearly
ten years with the Village and 6 years as the Building Commissioner of the Building Department, Ed Buettner retired at
the end of June. Ed has been an invaluable asset for the Village over the last decade and we wish him many happy and
relaxing years in retirement. It is my pleasure to announce that Mark LaChappell has taken over as the new Building
Commissioner. With over five years as the Village Code Enforcement Officer, Mark brings a wealth of knowledge,
experience and energy to this position.
After nearly 75 combined years patrolling the streets of Lemont, Patrol Officer Gary Frodin and Sergeants Mark Krolik
and Joseph Miller have recently retired from the Lemont Police Department. Four new patrol officers are finishing up
police academy and/or field training and will be joining Chief Shaughnessy’s staff in the coming months. While the
community will miss the retiring officers, this will also be an exciting time for the Department and the community as
this is the first time in several years the Village will be bringing aboard new officers to serve the community.
Lastly, it is with great regret that I must announce that Ben Wehmeier will be vacating his post as Lemont’s Village
Administrator. Moving back to his home state, Ben will be taking over as the County Administrator for Jefferson
County, Wisconsin. We wish him much success in his new position; he will be missed. It is our pleasure to announce
that George Schafer will be replacing Ben as Lemont’s next Village Administrator effective July 1st. George began
his career with the Village of Lemont in 2005 as an intern while attending graduate school. He has served as Lemont’s
Assistant Village Administrator since being promoted to the position in 2009. George has an abundance of experience
in an array of areas within our Village and has been working with myself, the Board and Administrator Wehmeier on
several transition items.
On behalf of the Village Board I would like to thank the outgoing staff for all they have done for the Village, they will
all be missed. We are excited to work with staff and their new positions going forward.

Boat, Camper, Trailer
Storage/Parking
Village ordinance requires that
boats, campers or trailers may only
be stored/parked at a residence if
located in a garage or other fully
enclosed structure that substantially
conceals them from public view.
A boat, camper or trailer may be
parked at a residence for the purpose
of loading or unloading for no more
than 8 consecutive hours or 12 hours
in a 24-hour period.
Non-compliance may result in
fines. Any questions regarding the
ordinance should be addressed to the
Village Code Enforcement Officer at
(630) 243-2704.
Residents Asked to
Monitor Ash Trees
Although the Public Works
Department conducts routine visual
inspections, residents are being asked
to monitor ash trees particularly in
the parkway for signs of distress.
The borer kills trees from the inside
out, planting eggs inside ash trees.
The larvae then eat the tissue of the
tree causing it to die. The beetles
emerge shortly after Memorial Day
and spread to other trees. The signs
to watch for are:
•
•
•
Die-back at the crown of the tree.
"S" Shaped galleys or tunnels on
tree trunks.
"D" Shaped emergence holes.
For more information, call Public
Works at (630) 257-2532.
Village News
Lawn Sprinkler Valves
Require Testing Annually
Lawn Sprinkler RPZ valves must
be tested annually by a certified
technician to prevent contamination
of the public water supply by faulty
valves.
The inspection certificate must
be submitted to the Building Department following the inspection. A list of
certified inspectors can be found on the Village web site at www.lemont.il.us.
Odd-Even Watering Regulations Are In Effect
Properties with odd-numbered addresses may water on odd-numbered
calendar days; even-numbered addresses may water on even-numbered calendar
days between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. Odd-even regulations
apply until October 1. On the day new sod is laid, residents may water freely
(no permit required). Thereafter, the odd-even regulations apply.
Mosquito Abatement
The Public Works Department manages the Village's mosquito abatement
program. Residential spraying will be limited only to periods of excessive
annoyance and storm drains will be treated regularly. Advance notice before
spraying will be given upon request: (630) 257-2532.
How Can You Help?
• Promptly remove standing water from all pots, containers, and tire swings
around the yard. Mosquitoes can develop in only five days.
• Keep weeds and grass mowed.
• Keep gutters free of leaves and debris so water runs freely.
• Change the water in bird baths once a week.
• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs
regularly.
• Drain water from pool covers.

The Art & Culture Commission has an appointed position open for a 7th commissioner. If you are interested in promoting
the cultural environment of our community please consider filling out an application. The Art & Culture Commission
meets on the second Tuesday of every month (no meeting in December) in the Lemont Center for the Arts (LCA) at 7:00
p.m. Besides running the gallery and events at the LCA we are committed to enriching the cultural landscape of Lemont.
We have been instrumental in bringing many public art projects to the community, including the Pride of Lemont mural,
mosaic pilasters on the Stephen Street bridge, community painting jams and much more. Stop in to see what's going on
at the Center and to pick up an application. Commissioner applications are also available at the Lemont Village Hall.
Canal Corridor Association Coming To Lemont
The Canal Corridor Association (CCA) will soon have a presence in Lemont. The Lemont Chamber of Commerce
office has moved out of the Lemont Metra Station and into the recently renovated Village Hall. The CCA will occupy
the office space in the Metra Station. The move will occur early this summer.
The Canal Corridor Association is designated by Congress as the local coordinating entity for the Illinois & Michigan
Canal National Heritage Corridor, the nation's first national heritage space, and help create destinations and spur economic
development. Currently, all CCA staff work out of a center in LaSalle, Illinois. Initially at least one staff person will work
from Lemont, but CCA officials indicate the Association's presence and involvement in Lemont could grow.

The Lemont Police Dept. recently
changed the look of their uniforms.
New patches were introduced which
were more reflective of the history
of the Village of Lemont. Members
of the Department designed the new
look which includes the colors of the
American Flag and the skyline of
Historic Lemont. The police patch
is the second most visible symbol of
the Lemont Police Department next
to the marked squad car. The Lemont
Police Department is committed to
service in the community and the
new patch acknowledges a spirit of
pride in the department. The new
patch was introduced as the supply of
old patches was exhausted. Officers
voted on the new patch and paid for
the changeover from the previous
patch.
