Hans Gehman
977 W. Main Street, Mount Joy, PA 17552
620-2323 • www.gehmanfurniture.com
• What
made your family decide to open a fine furniture
& interiors store? My Grandparents, Lester and Martha
Gehman, opened Gehman’s Furniture & Interiors right next
door to our store in 1969 with the help of their children,
Nancy, Leon and Laverne. My parents, Leon and Anna, began offering interior design services in the 1970s. As business grew, they moved to and restored a brownstone farmhouse along the Swatara Creek in Middletown, and opened
Holly Tree Farm Interiors in the restored barn. My brother,
Seth, and I grew up at this farm/store/home, but our parents
decided to sell the farm and move back to Mount Joy in order to be more involved in our teen activities. After Seth and
I graduated from Elizabethtown College, our parents invited
us to join them in the family business. Having served many
customers from the West Shore over the years, we selected
a site along Route 15 in Mechanicsburg, and expanded from
a home business to 37,000 square feet in 2002.
• Can you tell us what made you to decide to move your
store from your previous location to Mount Joy? During
the recession, the furniture industry, like so many others,
changed dramatically. Asian goods pushed consumer price
expectations ever lower, and many American manufacturers and high-end retailers closed their doors. We developed
a loyal customer base among those who still appreciate
quality goods and American craftsmanship, but we realized
we could conduct our business just as well without so much
overhead, inventory… and commute! So, once again, we
brought our business back home to Mount Joy, settling into
a charming historic barn on the west end of Main Street.
• Do you offer more than furniture? In addition to furniture, we offer a highly curated selection of flooring, lamps,
and paintings, with access to many more by special order.
We also offer custom draperies and Hunter Douglas blinds.
• What services do you provide? In-stock items are available for immediate purchase, but we enjoy special ordering
“The Perfect Thing” customized to your preferences. There
is no charge to pick up your purchases, but we charge $99
per trip for local deliveries. We have coordinated deliveries
to the Jersey Shore, Vermont, Florida and Hawaii. We can
help you pull a room together with space planning and product selections, but we also work with local interior designers through our Design Trade Program.

Greetings from Mount Joy Area Historical Society
Our regular monthly meeting will be held Monday,
April 18, beginning at 7 p.m., at the Society Museum,
120 Fairview Street. The program for that evening is
Randy Newcomer, who will tell us about the history
of mining in Lancaster County. Refreshments will be
served following Mr. Newcomer’s presentation.
Membership Drive Kickoff
New Membership Matching Funds
Now through July 31, 2016
For every NEW member who joins the society, Engle Printing & Publishing Co Inc.
will contribute matching funds to the Historical Society toward the restoration of the
Cemetery Road Schoolhouse Project. Help us preserve Mount Joy’s history!
*Become a NEW member of the Historical Society and receive $5 off the price of the House & Garden Tour on May 15, 2016
The MJAHS has received a very generous donation
from Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., along
with a challenge to the Society that could really help us
out financially if everybody gets into the act. The challenge, which goes until July 31, 2016, is that Engle’s
will match every dollar donated to the Museum’s
Cemetery Road Schoolhouse project up to $20,000!
That includes new memberships ($20) or tickets purchased for the upcoming Home and Garden Tour. Now
that’s a fantastic offer – but we need the help of everyone in the community to reach that goal!
Please help us by becoming a new member and/or
sending a donation to the Mount Joy Area Historical
Society, 120 Fairview Street, Mount Joy, PA 17552,
and indicate on your check that it is a part of the matching funds challenge for the Schoolhouse renovation.
Thanks so very much to Charlie Engle and the Engle
Printing & Publishing Company for this terrific offer
and to our friends in Mount Joy who care about historic
preservation! We also accept payments through PayPal
at our website www.mountjoyhistory.com
Home and Garden Tour – The Historical Society has been graciously invited by some of our fellow
Chamber members and Mount Joy merchants to participate in a fundraising home and garden tour, scheduled
for May 15, 2016, from 1-5 p.m., with proceeds to
be contributed towards the matching funds challenge.
Tickets are available ($20/per person) in advance at
www.mountjoyhistory.com. Our co-sponsor is offering a
$5 discount on the ticket price to anyone who joins the
Society at the time of purchase. (That would be $35 for
a tour ticket and a 2016 membership.)
AND, the Society’s 2016 journal is in the final stages
of publication and should be ready for release in May
at the Home and Garden Tour. The new book, entitled
Murder in Mount Joy, tells the story of the 1922 murder
of Zachariah Keller by a young man named Harry Way
– how and where it happened, who testified at the trial,
and the end result of Mount Joy’s tragic summer of ‘22.
Help preserve Mount Joy’s historic heritage! It’s easy
– just visit our NEW website www.mountjoyhistory.com
and look for the links!

Chubby Checker to Lead Crowd in Attempt
to Set the World Record!
Chamber members check
on this link on You tube!:
https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=yOXt83isx98
Opening Night with Mount
Joy Chamber Member, Lancaster Barnstormers will be historic
as all fans in attendance will
be asked to join in an attempt
to shatter the Guinness Book
of World Records for the most
people dancing The Twist at
one time. Chubby Checker, one
of the iconic names in the annals of American music will be on hand to lead the
record-breaking effort on Thursday, April 28.
Guinness representatives have already sanctioned the attempt for the World
Record. Barnstormers’ representatives will complete the extensive paperwork
necessary to officially designate the record. Currently, the largest Twist dance
was achieved by 3,040 participants at an event organized by The Salvation Army
Mississippi and Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi, USA,
on August 23, 2014.
Checker will get the crowd up and moving for world record glory during
the middle of the third inning of the evening baseball game between the Barnstormers and the Somerset Patriots, when he shouts the ubiquitous opening
line, “C’mon Baby, let’s do The Twist…”
The rock icon will also sing the National Anthem that evening following a
performance of God Bless America by the Kings’ Kids Choir of Calvary Church.
There will be a moment of silence before the game in honor of Lancaster community leader, Nelson Polite, past President of the Lancaster City Council, who
passed away during the off season.
For Opening Night, Clipper Magazine Stadium will be transformed back
to 1960 – a golden year for the United States. A new young President was
about to move into the White House, with his glamorous wife. It was year of
peace and hope. Elvis was king and Rock & Roll ruled the day. That was when
Checker released his classic and created a monumental dance craze with one of
the most popular songs in music history – “The Twist”.
Back in 1960, the most popular kids’ toy was the “Slinky”, and in honor
of that great time in American history, the first 1,000 fans who enter the
gates on Opening Day will receive a “Slinky.” Fans will also be treated to
some throwback treats of the time throughout the night including Pixie Sticks,
Chicklets, Fireballs and Razzles.

Health Tip of the Month
from Norma Millard, RN,
Certified Health Coach
Healthy Exercise: What is it?
First there is normal activity used as
we perform our ROUTINE daily tasks.
Increase calorie burn by having good
posture, standing instead of sitting,
doing things manually instead of using
machines, taking stairs rather than
elevators, etc. Second, there is some
type of regular STRUCTURED exercise.
When you choose your exercise, be
sure it’s something you will want to do!
You are more likely to stay with it if you
do. It should be:
1) Convenient. There’s nothing more
convenient than lacing up your shoes
and heading out the door or hopping
on the treadmill in your basement! You
don’t need any excuses for missing a
workout!
2) Enjoyable. Always hated running?
Don’t start with running. Did you enjoy
riding your bike as a kid? If you don’t
like your first choice, don’t give up! Find
something you like.
3) Pain-free. Nothing should hurt
you—not your equipment or your body.
Be sure your shoes fit and your bike seat
is right for you. Don’t work out an injured
body part. Sometimes early on worked
muscles will be sore, and it’s actually
good to continue your exercise so that
your muscles don’t get stiff.
4) Maintainable. If the thought of
walking every day bored you to tears,
change it up! Go skating, get on the bike,
use a hula hoop. Changing it up every so
often will also help confuse the muscles
and work some different ones.
What about time and intensity?
After you’ve found the right combination
for you, go for time. On your first few
days, work out for ten minutes. When
you feel you can go longer, add five.
Continue to add five minutes until you
work up to a half-hour several days a
week, adding speed and difficulty to
improve results. Always increase in
manageable increments to create a new
healthy habit you’ll love forever! As soon
as you reach one goal, set another. YOU
ARE YOUR ONLY COMPETITION! And you
will always win by becoming as healthy
as you can be.

Financial FOCUS
Should You Change Your Investment Mix Over Time?
To be successful at investing, some people think
they need to “get in on the ground floor” of the next “big
thing.” However, instead of waiting for that one “hot”
stock that may never come along, consider creating
an asset allocation – a mix of investments – that’s
appropriate for your needs, goals and risk tolerance.
But once you have such a mix, should you keep it
intact forever, or will you need to make some changes?
And if so, when?
To begin with, why is asset allocation important?
Different types of investments – growth stocks,
income-producing stocks, international stocks, bonds,
government securities, real estate investment trusts,
and so on – have unique characteristics, so they rarely
rise or fall at the same time. Thus, owning a mix of
investments can help reduce the forces of market
volatility.(Keep in mind, though, that allocation does not
ensure a profit or protect against loss.) Your particular
mix will depend on your investment time horizon,
comfort with risk, and financial goals.
When you are young, and starting out in your
career, you may want your asset allo- cation to be
more heavily weighted toward stocks and stock-based
investments. Stock investments historically have
provided the greatest returns over the long term –
although, as you’ve probably heard, past performance
can’t guarantee future results – and you will need this
growth potential to help achieve your long-term goals,
such as a comfortable retirement. Stocks also carry a
greater degree of investment risk, including the risk
of losing principal, but when you have many years
to invest, you have time to potentially overcome the
inevitable short-term declines.
Once you reach the middle-to-later stages of your
career, you may have achieved some of your goals that
required wealth accumulation, such as sending your
children to college. However, what is likely your biggest
long-term goal – retirement – still awaits you, so you
may not want to scale back too much on your stocks
and other growth-oriented investments. Nonetheless,
including an allocation to bonds can help to reduce
some of the volatility of the stock portion of your
portfolio.
Now, fast forward to just a few years before you
retire. At this point, you may want to lower your overall
risk level, because, with retirement looming, you don’t
have much time to bounce back from downturns –
and you don’t want to start withdrawing from your
retirement accounts when your portfolio is already
going down. So, now may be the time to add bonds and
other fixed-income investments. Again, though, you still
need some growth opportunities from your investments
– after all, you could be retired for two, or even three
decades.
Finally, you’re retired. At this point, you should
adjust your asset allocation to include enough incomeproducing investments – bonds, certificates of deposit,
perhaps dividend-paying stocks – to help you enjoy the
retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Yet, you can’t
forget that the cost of living will likely rise throughout
your retirement. In fact, at a modest 3% inflation rate,
the price of goods will more than double after 25 years.
So even during retirement, you need your portfolio to
provide some growth potential to help you avoid losing
purchasing power.
By being aware of your asset allocation, and by
making timely adjustments as neces-sary, you can
provide yourself with the opportunities for growth and
income that you will need throughout your life.
