I Am Signed Up: Yes / No Ballroom Dance Class Tom and Betty are teaching the Waltz in November and December. The November classes are from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM on Thursday, November 5th and Thursday, November 19th. All classes are in the Mimosa Room. The waltz is the second most popular dance after the foxtrot/twostep. One of the earliest references to the waltz is a 1580 writing of French philosopher Montaigne who wrote that the dancers in Augsburg held each other so closely that their faces touched (how shocking)! The peasants of Bavaria began dancing a dance called Walzer around 1750 and in 1786 the ladies of Vienna were particularly celebrated for their grace and movements while waltzing. No event ever produced so great a sensation in English society as the introduction of the waltz in 1813, although the Oxford Dictionary considered it “riotous and indecent” as late as 1825. My how times have changed! As always, the lessons are free. Bring a partner and learn to waltz. Come if you just want to watch or listen to the music. See you then! All of the stories were written by men that he worked with and represent a small percentage of the Vietnam veterans who flew for Western Airlines and are really a cross section of the Vietnam Veterans who manned the cockpits of all commercial airlines in the United States for close to fifty years, beginning in the mid 1960s. Norton in 1876 as a one-story, four room single family residence on what had been Alamo farmlands during the Spanish period. During the time of its original construction, the surrounding King William neighborhood was a desirable location for the city's largely wealthy German families. However, a devastating flood in 1921 changed the neighborhood's fortunes as the old German families, which had already begun moving away at the beginning of the 20th century, chose homes further away from downtown and the San Antonio River. Through it all, the house, which took on its Italianate look by 1904, went through a variety of owners reflecting the changes going on throughout the city and region. After many years of ownership changes the property was acquired by Walter Mathis. In addition to his preservation work on the house and King William area, Walter Mathis was also a prodigious collector of artifacts of nearly every type; these collections fill Villa Finale. Throughout his home, one finds beautiful examples of European furniture, and fine and decorative arts. Mr. Mathis particularly enjoyed collecting memorabilia relating to the life and death of Napoleon Bonaparte. Mr. Mathis’s interest in Texas art is represented in the collection by such artists as Mary Bonner, and Julian and Robert Onderdonk. In addition, there is a wide range of Texas decorative arts, such as Bell silver, Texas furniture, and Texian campaign ceramics. Towers Residents will visit Villa Finale Wednesday, November 18th. While there you will learn more about the fascinating Mathis collections and how the house reflects the different periods of the neighborhood's history. Laurel is always so pleasant and exceedingly competent in her job as a wait person in the dining room. She is also a great bar tender! Laurel comes from the small town of Bohemia, New York. Her family was a large one, in fact she is one of six children, perhaps that is why she gets along so well with all of us here at The Towers! Laurel served in the military for a number of years and was stationed in Germany for a tour of duty where she was an assistant to the Chaplains. She said they basically served as a "body guard" for the chaplains since Chaplains could not carry any type of arms. She retired from the military with her last tour of duty being here at Ft. Sam Houston. While on her way to work one day she saw our sign that said we were hiring wait staff and stopped for an interview and was of course hired. LIFE As I sit here alone on my recliner & look back over the years life could not have been finer. I have had a wonderful family & great friends & their unselfish love will comfort me to life’s end. There were times when life was harsh & sad & those were the times when I truly appreciated the family & friends I have had. Laurel had experience in food service and bartending before she came to us. She says that bartending is much better here because there is no smoke and people tend not to "get drunk". She loves working here because of the people and this job gives her time to be with her family. Laurel has been married for 15 years and has a 14 year old daughter. She loves being able to spend more time with them. She is a marathon runner and recently ran a 5K with her daughter and dog to help raise money for SNIPSA. She also loves travel, reading, photography and of course going to the beach. When I roll out of bed & see the beautiful sunrise & face the Challenges Of another day, that is when I really, really do appreciate & feel the love of those guys & it makes me want to shout hurray! We are very blessed to have Laurel at the Towers. She loves working here and visiting with all who live here. When you see her, thank her for her great service! As time moved on & I became old & gray I fully realize their love is a wonderful thing & it is here to stay. Charles Case #706 Transportation: Mondays All Day SAMMC 1:00 PM Wal-Mart at Austin Hwy.
