Neighbours
St John’s Centenary Service
On Sunday 14 July at 10am the whole
year of Centenary celebrations culminates
in a special Centenary Parish Eucharist
when the Bishop of Southwark will preside.
A note, dropped through my letterbox by a
neighbour got me thinking - how well do I know
my neighbours? To my shame, I have to admit,
that I know some of my neighbours but not all.
The popular, Australian TV soap, coincidently
entitled ‘Neighbours’, has the lyrics: Neighbours,
everybody needs good neighbours. With a little
understanding you can find the perfect blend.
Neighbours should be there for one another;
that’s when good neighbours become good
friends.
Our year of celebrations began with the
Flower Festival in July.
Other events
followed: the history of St John’s evening,
with film and slides and supper, an
Edwardian Music Hall, the Candlemas
Dinner, A Hundred Years in Hurst Green
weekend, a Treasure Hunt and Picnic and
a Quiz Night have all kept the party going.
Jesus was once asked the question, ‘who is my
neighbour?’ In reply he told a story which has
commonly become known as the Good Samaritan. Central to all the celebrations of course is the presence of our own church,
A man was travelling
from
Jerusalem
to
Jericho, when a gang of
thieves attacked him,
beat him and stole all his
possessions, leaving him
for dead at the side of
the road.
A priest
walked past the injured
man but although he
saw him didn’t stop
because he didn’t want
to get involved. Likewise a churchgoer walked
past the dying man but didn’t stop. Finally,
someone from another country walked past, saw
the man lying on the pavement and stopped.
helping to maintain the Christian faith in Hurst Green. Its essential
message, that we should love God and love our neighbour as ourselves,
has been preached in the village for well over 1,000 years, when St. Mary’s
was our Parish Church. By 1912 the population of Hurst Green had grown
big enough to need its own church. In those days nearly everyone was a
churchgoer; a hundred years later the number of regular worshippers is far
fewer, but many more people turn to the church in times of crisis, and for
life’s great events. The church is the Parish Church, it is there to serve
everyone who lives in the village, whether or not they go to church. It
remains at the heart of the community.
The foreigner felt sorry for the bleeding man so
he bandaged his wounds and took him to an inn
to be taken care of. The foreigner paid all the
man’s expenses until he was well again. Jesus
finished the story by saying, ‘which of these three
was a neighbour to the man who was attacked?’
The answer of course is the person from a
different country who felt sympathy and
compassion for the man.
100 years later, on 14 July, the Bishop of Southwark will again be coming
to St John’s. It promises to be a wonderful service, so do come and join in
with our crowning celebration. There is no tea on the lawn this time but
there will be refreshments afterwards.
So who are our neighbours? Our neighbour might
be the person we live next door to but she might
equally be the person who shows us an act of
kindness today. He might be the person who
cares enough to genuinely ask how we are and
really want an honest answer; she might be
someone who demonstrates thoughtfulness or
shows us consideration at the checkout in the
supermarket.
The consecration on 12 July 1913 was a very grand occasion on a glorious
summer day, reported in detail by the Surrey Mirror. The Bishop of
Southwark conducted the formal service, when the churchwardens petition
the Bishop to consecrate the new church. Afterwards there was a lavish
tea at Stone Hall, remembered for years to come.

Memories of Hurst Green
I was eleven years old when my parents, Fay and Terry Butcher, moved
down to Oxted, after six magical years in Tatsfield where we more or less
ran wild: permanent bonfires in the field, sleeping out in makeshift tents and
walking a good mile and a half to catch the bus down to Westerham schools.
When there was snow, we literally had to walk on top of the hedges! And
nobody batted an eyelid.
But as we started to want to be in Guides, Red Cross, dancing and so on,
my parents realised that the time had come for a move down to civilisation.
Oxted seemed to be a good place with schools, churches, buses and station
and we knew of the proposed new houses being built in Oxted and Hurst
Green.
As it turned out we were the first family to move into Woodhurst Lane
houses. The Comforts Farm Avenue houses were also being built at this
time, but there were no shops in Pollards Oak Road and only a wooden hut
just by the bridge. My new school friend, (by now I was at Whyteleafe
School) Valerie Wicks, lived in Pollards Wood Road, next door to Den
Giddens, of Scouting fame. Her parents had been moved down there from
London in 1947 when she was two years old. Her father worked in the new
Kensitas Cigarette Factory (later the site of International Rectifiers) which, as
it was painted all over white, could be seen for miles away, and her mother
worked in the little hut just over the bridge and sometimes gave me and Val
sweets.
We were not without some social life - on Monday evenings we went to St
Agatha’s to learn ballroom dancing, with music supplied by a wind-up
gramophone and our partners chosen for us by the mistress! There was
also a boys’ rock group on a Saturday night.
Hurst Green Gardening Club
The Annual Competition in April
with the Godstone Club nearly
didn’t happen, but some brave
daffodils did make it to the show well done Godstone (again!)
Our own summer evening flower show
was also a challenge, mainly due to the absence
of summer and flowers. A modest competition,
but a glass of Pimms adds to a social occasion.
What to do this month? Don’t believe all the
articles on this subject; we are weeks behind and
you will know your garden conditions. Even the
RHS June magazine article seems more relevant
to July this year, and don’t plant your cuttings the
way they show in the photo - not if you want them
to live.
Problems with your plants? Our August meeting
may have the answers you seek. In September
you can find out how we can help the bees. Don’t
forget to mow the lawn before you go on holiday.

teenagers to pensioners will be most welcome.

At one time some of our parents, including mine, helped to paint the outside
windows of the Hall! Then there was the Captain’s Room, near Itchingwood
Common and where we had an occasional Evensong. On Rogation Sunday
Evensong was occasionally held by the Harris’ farm. My brother, Tom, was
friendly with one of the sons. You will have gathered by now that as my
three brothers were in the choir at St John’s, we were very much involved in If you would like to find out more about the Club,

For many years now Fairtrade has been greatly supported in our area by a local initiative called OTT - Opportunities
Through Trade. OTT is based in Robert Denholm House in Bletchingley. It acts as a purchasing centre, buying from
the main Fairtrade depot and supplying local outlets such as churches and schools with a wide range of Fairtrade
goods on a sale or return basis.
OTT was started by the Revd George and Margaret Young, who have run it with great success for all this time. However George
and Margaret, no longer young in years, have now decided that it is time to hand over to a new volunteer. Running OTT and
leading the team of volunteers would suit someone with business or retail experience, but the most important qualification is a
commitment to Fairtrade. If anyone is interested in this venture please either contact me (contact details at the bottom of page 1)
or George and Margaret direct on 01737 822363 or email [email protected] to find out more.

Oxted One World Group raised £5,900 at its annual Open Gardens Day held on
Bank Holiday Monday. The Group would like to thank all its supporters who
attended the event, the garden owners who opened their gardens, those who
helped organise the day and the local businesses and members who sold tickets
in advance. Six gardens in Oxted, Limpsfield and Itchingwood Common were
open to the public with teas on sale at two of the gardens, and plants available at a AT THE BARN THEATRE, OXTED
