I like the small class sizes as you get so much support. The environment is very friendly too. I want to pass all my GCSEs and then go on to be a successful mechanic and own my own garage – or perhaps, a stockbroker!” - Joe HOSPITALITY, FOOD & ENTERPRISE CAREER COLLEGE Launched in September 2014, the 14-16 College - now called Bromley Technical Academy, offers an exciting alternative to the traditional school environment for Year 10 students which combines vocational skills with GCSEs. The past year has been an incredibly successful one for the Hospitality, Food & Enterprise Career College, London’s first. Our first group of students joined in September 2014. The aim is to propel motivated young people, who prefer to learn in a more practical and relevant way, into an environment which develops their vocational skills alongside a rigorous suite of traditional GCSEs. A huge amount of preparation and careful planning shaped the curriculum, design of facilities, and ensuring a network of prestigious industry professionals were involved in every aspect of the set up. Students experience high quality academic teaching, combined with vocational instruction from industry experts. They study GCSEs in core subjects alongside qualifications from a choice of options including Motor Vehicle, Hair and Beauty, Child Development and Care, Sports Science or Hospitality & Catering. Students have access to excellent facilities and to a range of work experience opportunities which prepare them for their studies at level three. Class sizes in all subjects tend to be smaller than in schools, learning programmes are personalised to each child and excellent pastoral care is provided. Students are encouraged to participate in a full range of extra curricular activities to maximise participation and overall attainment. We also offer an extension programmes in all core subjects to support our students’ development. When Ofsted visited in June, they praised the vocational teaching, particularly of practical skills and also the good management of students’ behaviour. Our relationships with prominent hoteliers, chefs, and hospitality experts has offered the most unique opportunity to those who have chosen a career in Food, Hospitality and Catering. Throughout their courses, students are exposed to the best practice in the field, and are ideally placed to move into employment or further study, equipped with unrivalled experience and skills. The second phase is due to start in 2016 and will see a deli counter, shop and bar added to the existing restaurant, and conference facilities. Students will prepare artisan breads, cakes and other tempting treats for sale in the deli and gain invaluable experience selling and advising customers about their produce as well as marketing their range in order to maximise sales. When putting together ideas for the look and feel of the new restaurant, it was key to be able to align the visuals closely to the Career College branding. At the same time, the brand had to communicate the contemporary food offer and match the up-market look of the restaurant. The lead colour - a shade between burnt sienna and yellow ocre was chosen, alongside the name “BR6” – the postcode for Orpington, where the restaurant is based. A contemporary font, offered a modern look echoing the restaurant’s food. The restaurant’s interior is a match for some of the best London eateries, and is backed up by impressive training facilities. The Career College which is part of the Career College Trust, provides innovative, employer-led education for 14-19 year olds, and is supported by an enviable advisory board made up of industry greats from The Hilton Group, Hyatt Group and Springboard. Enterprising and engaging - We encourage and support the development of entrepreneurial skills and continue to find new ways to maximise the College’s resources for the community. /8 BROMLEY COLLEGE - ANNUAL REVIEW 2014|2015 /9 OUR BRANDS The expansion of our Higher Education offer has been well received locally, and demand has been such that the College has now taken the decision to create a Business School which will provide an exciting range of business and professional courses. In order to plan for future demand and to anticipate the needs of our community, the Business School will link with employers and look to offer the kinds of courses needed by these organisations to up skill the workforce in Bromley and beyond. To our existing range of legal, accounting and management qualifications we plan to add HR, Marketing and other specialist training. This offer will reduce the need for those in our community who currently travel into central London to access this kind of provision. BROMLEY E D U C AT I O N A L T R U S T In September 2015, the former Grovelands and Kingswood Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) joined Bromley Educational Trust and formed the Hayes and Midfield campuses of Bromley Trust Academy. In early 2016, Bromley Beacon Academy (formerly Burwood School) will be the latest addition to the Multi Academy Trust. Bromley Beacon Academy specialises in supporting pupils with behavioural, emotional and social needs, and like the other schools will benefit from the sponsorship of the Trust, providing centralised administration services and access to specialist advice and training. After a successful launch and Ofsted inspection Bromley Technical Academy will be further developed over the coming years to expand the offer and the intake. We are looking at the potential demand for a wider curriculum range and plan to consult with parents and young people, but also employers in the wider area. The Apprenticeship Academy brings our Apprenticeship programmes under one roof. With the push for Apprenticeships being a cornerstone of government policy and the need to continually upskill our workforce, the Academy will be a flagship initiative that brings together students of all ages and levels with employers large and small. The second phase of our student-led restaurant BR6, in Orpington, is due in 2015/16 and will include a student-led deli counter from which they will sell artisan breads, cakes and other produce. The new commercial restaurant opened its doors in 2015 and is part of London’s first Hospitality, Food and Enterprise Career College. Diners are treated to some amazing dishes, produced by ambitious young people who are set to become the talented chefs of the future. The restaurant’s interior is a match for some of the best London eateries, and is backed up by impressive training facilities including two industry-standard kitchens, a pastry kitchen as well as its own conference centre. This year the College was proud to receive government approval to use the designation ‘University Centre’ for the expansion of its Higher Education provision. This important change recognises the growth that will take place in both programmes and student numbers. Higher Education is an important and growing area of the College’s offer and will continue to be built over the next three years. Partnerships have been key to the success of the College’s higher education offer and although Higher Education has been part of the College offer for some time, the expansion of programmes is more recent and is a result of the excellent relationship with partner Higher Education institutions. Our partners are Greenwich University and Canterbury Christ Church University, with the latter having in place a formal Strategic Alliance with the College that governs the joint work. This Alliance has already resulted in the development of the proposed University Technical College. The Higher Education portfolio will have grown from five programmes in 2012 to an impressive 33 by the end of 2017. The College is also keen to work with its University partners to develop Higher Level Apprenticeships and Degree Apprenticeships. These will provide an important progression route for students at Level 3 who do not wish to pursue a traditional degree. The College has taken its first steps towards launching the new UTC within the Bromley borough. This has been a carefully planned and well-thought out development, born of the partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University, King’s College Hospital NHS Trust, Mytime Active, Nuffield Health and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. The University Technical College will specialise in Health and Wellbeing Sciences and open to 14-19 year old students. Our vision is to provide outstanding vocational education with students receiving expert teaching in hi-tech specialist laboratories and classrooms. Bromley UTC, will deliver the technical skills needed within this sector. Health and Wellbeing Sciences are ‘essential’ to the future economy of the area and fuels the roles of healthcare, sports and fitness professionals. The development of a UTC is part of our long term recruitment strategy. By building relationships from an early age and inspiring individuals in our work, we know we will be the employer of choice and make a real difference in our community. OUR FUTURE Following the decision to form a Federation with Greenwich Community College (GCC) at the start of 2016 and then fully merge later in the year, Bexley and Bromley Colleges will be working together to explore establishing a strategic partnership. The aim is to see how through an evolving collaboration they can deliver outstanding education and training opportunities for students and employers across South East London and beyond. This will ensure a sustainable long term future and the best possible opportunities for students. BROMLEY COLLEGE OF FURTHER & HIGHER EDUCATION / 10 BROMLEY COLLEGE - ANNUAL REVIEW 2014|2015 / 11 WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY: Jack - Plumbing Apprenticeship with Pimlico Plumbers Working with partners, stakeholders and employers is fundamental to every College and Bromley College is no different. In fact, working with the community is a defining feature of our vision and mission. When creating our curriculum, we base it on trends within the local, regional and national economy and the needs of our partners. We engage with the Local Enterprise Partnerships, local businesses and business groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the local authority in designing our curriculum. We also work in partnership with Government agencies such as the Skills Funding Agency and the National Apprenticeship Service. My family and friends inspired me to become an apprentice, in fact, my cousin has recently completed a Level 2 Plumbing Apprenticeship with Pimlico Plumbers and is now working full time for the company as a qualified engineer. I’d definitely recommend an Apprenticeship as it is hard for some young people to get jobs, but with a trade behind you, it gives you a definite advantage! Abigayle - Carpentry NVQ Levels 1 & 2 Diploma A key part of the College’s strategy is to broaden and widen the range of education, learning and skills activities available to students, the community and employers. Without teaming up with a range of strategic partners this would not be possible. A number of those partners are set out below: Career College Trust – In partnership with the Career College Trust in September 2014, we opened the Hospitality, Food and Enterprise Career College in the heart of Orpington. This, with student-run restaurant BR6 which is an essential part of Career College was the first of its kind in London. Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Greenwich – We work in partnership with both Universities who are the awarding bodies for our Higher Education degree programme. Their support has been crucial in enabling the College to place its degree programme under the umbrella Bromley College University Centre. We are working with Canterbury Christ Church and King’s College NHS as lead partners on setting up a University Technical College. Employers – We recognise that working with employers 1,000 employers is vital to the success of the College, the economy and to our students. The Apprenticeship programme supports 1,400 apprentices at all levels, we consult with employers on the type and level of courses the College should provide and also we work with employer-led organisations. The College’s Head of Business Development is a board member of the South East London Chambers of Commerce for example. OUR PARTNERS: / 12 BROMLEY COLLEGE - ANNUAL REVIEW 2014|2015 Connor - BTEC Level 3 Software Development Bromley College has allowed me to unleash a whole range of talents I didn’t know I had prior to enrolling. I’ve been allowed space and given the tools and guidance to discover my potential and break out of my comfort zone with confidence. When I came to enquire about a course in carpentry at Bromley College I was delighted by the enthusiasm I received. I have just passed my first year exams and have had a brilliant year. I’ve learnt loads of new skills and techniques. I get on well with everyone else on the course, you’re are treated like an adult and a lot is expected of you. This year I won a Best Learner Award for Entrepreneurial Skills and was presented with my prize at a gala ceremony at the House of Lords. Mary - Foundation Degree in Biomedical Science I left school in 1978 with A-Levels and went straight to work at London Transport while bringing up my family. I enrolled at Bromley College to study for a science degree - I was nervous starting my course, but I needn’t have worried as I was with a great group of students. I have been surprised by how much I have enjoyed the demands of the course, and I’ve been delighted with my results! / 13 GOVERNORS We should like to thank all the Corporation members for their guidance, expertise and commitment in the governance of the College over the past year. / 14 Members Type P Absalom Independent From March 15 P Bance Independent From March 15 N Bennett Independent From July 14 K Clarke Independent From March 15 C Cook Independent To April 15 R Coward Student From July 15 R Dawe Independent Chair, From August 2013, Of: Corporation, Governance and Search, Remuneration D Forty Independent Audit Committee, Governance and Search, remuneration A Hands Independent Corporation Chair to 1 August 2013 J Hunter Independent C Jolliff Independent L Judd Independent M Michalski Independent S Parrett Principal Role £ FINANCE Dates This table illustrates our financial performance for 2014/15 in comparison to 2013/14 Income and Expenditure Account for the year end 31 July 2014/15 INCOME To July 15 To December 14 Corporation Vice Chair, Governance and Search, Remuneration 2014/15 £000 2013/14 £000 24,228 24,395 4,736 4,489 Other income 555 351 Endowment and investment income 167 112 29,686 29,347 18,030 17,493 156 219 Other operating expenses 7,479 7,806 Depreciation 3,059 3,150 157 164 28,881 28,832 805 511 Funding Body Grants Tuition fees and education contracts TOTAL INCOME EXPENDITURE Audit Committee Vice Chair Staff costs Exceptional restructuring costs I Simmonds Student From September 14 July 15 M Stiasny Independent To February 2015 F Toop Independent L Watson Staff TOTAL EXPENDITURE V Whittle Independent Surplus for the year retained within general reserves K Woolcott Independent C Yates Independent Audit Committee Chair, Governance and Search E+D / Safeguarding Lead Governor Remuneration BROMLEY COLLEGE - ANNUAL REVIEW 2014|2015 Interest and other finance costs From March 15 From July 15 / 15 Contact us: a: Rookery Lane, Bromley BR2 8HE t: 020 8295 7000 e: [email protected] Follow us: facebook.com/bromleycollege - facebook.com/BR6Orpington @bromleycollege - @br6restaurant - @CapitalB_tweets BROMLEY COLLEGE OF FURTHER & HIGHER EDUCATION
