Don started out as a Soldier Apprentice in 8 Platoon, in September 1955. Someone recognised
the leadership qualities of this soldier at an early age. He was senior Platoon Leader to 10 Pl.
It is fitting that this Tribute be in the Friday edition of the Guardian. Friday was the day that
Apprentices Paraded on the Square with the other training companies of the RCASC.
The last Photo in this tribute is of Colonel Don at the farewell to the Parade Square in Camp
Borden.
He commenced Officer Training (OTP) in September 1960. During his forty year career he held
progressive line and staff positions, before retiring in 1995.
Don served with NATO and the United Nations. He has been described as a soldier’s soldier.
His global postings, allowed him to see firsthand the problems of the world. He was very proud
of serving his Country.
His love of the Corps never diminished, even after the Corps was morphed into the Logistics
branch. Don’s other passion was Hockey, he played on a few teams over the years and
enjoyed rehashing games won and lost with other retired hockey players of the Army.

Don Basinger. Grant that through the passion, death, and resurrection of your Son he may share in the joy
of your heavenly kingdom and rejoice in you with your saints forever. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
