The 2015 Athletics Carnival was held at Whaling Reserve and the weather was perfect! Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents who came to watch and support. We greatly appreciate your assistance with time keeping and helping with many of the activities throughout the day. Mrs Murphy did an amazing job in organizing our carnival, even ordering blue skies The Kenthurst Art Festival weekend was launched with a Cocktail evening on Friday night. Renowned artist Alasdair McGregor officially opened the evening with recounts of his voyages to the Antarctic. Radio announcer, Ron Wilson was our auctioneer and the children’s outstanding artwork raised $5,000.00. Parents were in awe of the standard of artwork presented and the stories behind each of the pieces. I hope you were able to visit with your child to see just what they achieved. Delicious food (the homemade pies were scrumptious) and learning tours provided by Claude ensured a truly memorable Art Festival. A huge thank you to the team of Bec Martin, Amber Coles-Souter and Claude Acosta who have worked tirelessly to present yet another world class event. The expertise and variety of highly regarded artists was phenomenal. Today’s learning is enhanced with state of the art and current technology. 3 of our Interactive White boards are no longer functioning, which inhibits the presentation of our quality learning and teaching. The purpose of raising funds is to ensure Kenthurst students have the absolute best facilities to learn. Today, we have installed 3 new E-Boards in S2A, S2P and S3M classrooms, both the children and teachers are ecstatic!! You are welcome to come and see what all the excitement is about. E-Boards installed at a cost of $7.500.00 each. The P&C have been able to contribute to the purchase of one of these E-boards through the fundraising of the Kenthurst Art Festival. On behalf of the children, thank you so very much. Our school community is truly committed to providing the very best learning environment for our children. That is why… Kenthurst is ‘The School of Choice’. The students (and teachers) are very excited!! Kenthurst Public School – “The School of Choice” Excellence and Innovation in a Unique Community Stage 1 Maths Week 3 During Maths this week Red and Green Group were learning all about money. The students were learning to count money and calculate change. A shop was set up in the classroom and each student was given $1.50 to spend at the shop. Mrs Tully and Mrs James were the shopkeepers and assisted the children with their purchases. Money was broken down into smaller amounts so the children became used to handling the plastic money. The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity. Note to parents and dentists: Although the children bought jellybeans, cakes, donuts, lollies and chocolates, you will be pleased to hear they were only pictures of the objects! Red Maths Group Kenthurst Public School – “The School of Choice” Excellence and Innovation in a Unique Community Stage 1 As 2015 is the Centenary of Anzac we have continued to study aspects of this time in Australian history. Stage 1 students have been researching and writing about Anzacs whose names appear on our local war memorial at John Benyon Rotary Park. We have been learning how to locate key words in informative texts and to then write our information, from those words. S1E has researched William Henry Nolland, who enlisted in 1915. He was riding on a horse drawn wagon in France and was returning to duty. The wagon was traveling on a dirt road which very rough due to shell fire. The wagon was carrying cases of ammunition which began to slip. William jumped across the wagon from the limber in order to steady the load. Unfortunately he was knocked off the wagon and the wheel ran over his leg, fracturing his femur. A Court of Enquiry was held in the field and witnesses gave evidence. It was decided that William was in no way to blame for the accident. He was subsequently discharged and came home. S1T have researched Reginald Edmund Allen, who enlisted in 1915. He was an orchardist who attended Dural Public School. Reginald was wounded on several occasions, including receiving a severe chest wound. We read the very brief telegram that his father received telling him that his son, on the other side of the world had this serious injury. We thought how awful it must have been to receive that news. We looked on Google Earth and saw his lovely sandstone house which still stands at Round Corner today. We learnt that after the war he lived in this house at West Pennant Hills and in 1920 he moved each stone by horse and cart to its current location. S1S have researched Albert Bishenden, who enlisted in 1915. Albert rose through the ranks becoming a Sergeant in 1918. In 1919 he was awarded the Military Medal for his leadership and bravery. It was at the battle at the Somme when Albert rescued men who were lost in a forest due to a thick fog. Later with a group of 12 men he captured an enemy post and took 20 men prisoners. It was written of him that “Throughout the operation he displayed great courage and daring and set his men a splendid example.” We thought that he sounded like a good leader and we were pleased that Albert survived the war. -Special thanks to Malcolm W. Johnston, our local historian for all of his assistance. This week, all the students in Stage 1 made Anzac biscuits in the kitchen. We would like to thank the mums who helped make this such a success. Footnote- the photo of the biscuits next to the recipe is the actual biscuits made by the children. They tasted as good as they look! Kenthurst Public School – “The School of Choice” Excellence and Innovation in a Unique Community K – 2 Athletics Carnival Last Tuesday K-2 students joined the rest of the school at Whaling Reserve for our sports carnival. The students were very excited especially as they could enjoy a ride on a bus, always fun. After joining in with the House War Cries the 5-7year olds were able to show off their running prowess on the field, cheered along by older siblings, mums, dads and the rest of the school. It was quite a treat! The remainder of our carnival included a range of novelty events such as old favourites like the egg and spoon race and the sack race. The students had lots of fun in the beautiful sunshine. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of those parents and grandparents who stepped up to help us out with point scoring and identifying place winners. Our carnival aims to encourage students to participate, develop teamwork skills and to do their best and that is exactly what we saw last Tuesday! Edwina Shaw Assistant Principal Kenthurst Public School – “The School of Choice” Excellence and Innovation in a Unique Community Athletics Carnival 2015 We could not have asked for a more perfect day to hold our annual school Athletics Carnival last Tuesday. I was absolutely amazed to see so many students participating in events and trying their ‘personal best’. The school and sporting spirit displayed by every house group was certainly a highlight for me and made me feel incredibly proud. Congratulations to our wonderful house leaders who encouraged this team spirit on the day, you did a fantastic job! I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who worked hard throughout the day to ensure the carnival ran smoothly and all events were finished on time. Thank you to all the parent helpers who assisted with various jobs on the day. Your time and efforts were greatly appreciated and the carnival would not have been the great success that it was, if we didn’t have your support and help. A special thank you to Mr Roberts who supplied the high jump equipment and helped to run this event. It was wonderful to see the students provided with the opportunity to participate in high jump this year. We will be holding an athletics presentation in our school hall this Friday August 7. The presentation is only for our 8-12 year old students and will commence at 2.30pm. Parents, friends and relatives are all welcome to attend. Included in this newsletter are all of the results from the carnival.
