Schedule - Miniature in Tune
1 For the ninth time Miniature in Tune 11th - 15th of July 2016 at Tune Conference Centre, Grevevej 20, 2670 Greve, Denmark Welcome to summer school Miniature in Tune 2016 It is a great pleasure for us to welcome you to Miniature in Tune, a summer school for people who are fond of making their own miniatures and like to challenge their craftsmanship. Parts of the organizer team wants to retire, so 2016 will perhaps be the last time, we meet in Tune. But should some energetic people want to continue Miniature in Tune and take over Tove's administrative tasks, Lisa and Kaj are willing to assist to make things work in a period of transition. In 2016 we have two new teachers – Valeria Bonomi from Italy, and Jeffry Antonis from The Netherlands. The other teachers are well known and also highly regarded in their individual fields: Bill Robertson from USA, James Carrington and Jens Torp from England, Angie Scarr from Spain and Tine Krijnen from The Netherlands. Each teacher offers a 3-day class and a 2-day class. Summer school takes place at Tune Kursuscenter (Tune Conference Centre), which is set in lovely rural surroundings, run by a Production School: Produktionsskolen i Greve og Høje-Taastrup. For further information about the teachers and the place see www.miniatureitune.dk or www.miniatureitune.com. Write to [email protected] or call Tove Palm at (45) 29 65 03 68. Classes: A-Classes – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday side A1 Bill Robertson Bone and Iron Chest 5 A2 Valeria Bonomi Backpack, Boots, Wallet and Diary TH Scale 6 A3 Jamie Carrington Sculpting Figures in 1/12 7 A4 Jens Torp A Candlestick designed by Jens Torp 8 A5 Angie Scarr Still life table (1858) by Danish artist William Hammer 9 A6 Tine Krijnen Bookbinding 10 A7 Jeffry Antonis Roombox with ”wooden” panels 11 B-Classes – Thursday and Friday B1 Bill Robertson Lutyens Chippendale Garden Bench 12 B2 Valeria Bonomi Handbag, high heels sandals, wallet and hat 13 B3 Jamie Carrington Sculpting the Head and Features in Polymer Clay 14 B4 Jens Torp A Small Silver Item 15 B5 Angie Scarr Olive Tree 16 B6 Tine Krijnen Leather book with hidden compartment 17 B7 Jeffry Antonis Introduction to Upholstery 18 4 A1 - Bill Robertson Bone and Iron Chest Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Teaching language is English. This project is based on a small reliquary chest dating from about 1400 in the Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen. These chests, which came in all sizes are used to hold highly valued objects. In our modern world of miniatures they can be found in early dollhouses such as Titania’s Palace, the inspiration for Queen Mary’s Dollhouse. The chest is made from six pieces of bone, the sides are held together by dovetail joints and iron straps riveted in place. The top is hinged, has a cast brass handle and a working lock. All this detail is in a chest only 28 MM long. When this class was taught in Castine Maine, USA and Ursem, NL. students cut their own pieces of bone. However due to a shorter class and lack of machines the pieces of bone from my local butcher shop will be pre-cut so we can start with the dovetail corners. The iron corner brackets and strap hinges will be pre drilled or done on a drill press. They will then be cut to shape with a jeweler’s saw. Students will then file and forge them to fit in their proper positions. These will be given a more three dimensional texture by filing 3 dimensional rosettes on the ends. There will also be some engraving on the steel strap hinges. A cast brass handle will be fitted in the center of the lid. A simple working lock will be made from machined out parts and mounted to the front of the chest. A nickel silver key will be provided. Fitting the lock to work just right may take some extra time so this last step may be done at home. The finished chest can be left in “new” condition or be worn and aged to look more like the original. This is a perfect class for those that just love little boxes and chests which the instructor certainly does. It is mostly delicate work done with hand tools and can be done sitting around a table. It will be a fun class and can be as simple or as complex as the student wishes. Note the material fee is a little higher due the exchange rate and the many lock and hinge parts that are pre-machined. Materials fee 600 DKK, payable in DKK, Euro or USD, to the teacher in class. 5 A2 - Valeria Bonomi Backpack, Boots, Wallet and Diary Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The teaching language is English. In this class students will learn how to shape pieces of leather to make four fashion accessories: an openable backpack, a pair of boots with stringes, a wallet and an openable diary with its paper sheets and pen. Students will use different materials such as leather, thread, magnets, paper sheets and a particular air drying clay for soles. They will learn also the technique for modelling the soles, right and left. Students will learn how to use two different kind of glue, in particular a tissue glue one, very fast and transparent that I will bring for them. Students will receive, as a gift, a fine tip glue applicator, perfect for the use they will have to do. Tools required: 2 pairs of small scissors; 1 with curved legs and 1 with straight legs, both very sharp. 1 pair of tweezers with fine tips. 1 black permanent marker. 1 pencil. The material fee is 400 DKK to be paid to the teacher in class. 6 A3 - Jamie Carrington Sculpting Figures in 1/12TH Scale Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Teaching language is English. In this class students will learn to create male and female faces, using Jamie’s new technique, before we work on the hands, feet and bodies. Once the parts are complete and baked you’ll learn how to pose the figure, assemble and complete it with makeup and wig, ready for dressing at home later. Regular students will re tune their skills and novices will learn new ones. At least one figure will be completed. All tools and clay will be provided to take home and the material fee will be 400 DKK, to be paid to the teacher during class. 7 A4 - Jens Torp A Candlestick designed by Jens Torp Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday This class is taught in English and in Danish. The techniques required to produce this item are shaping and bending wire, doming sheet, filing, sawing and drilling holes. There will also be soldering and polishing of the finished article. All these skills will be taught during the 3 days. Material cost to be paid to the teacher during class is 350 DKK 8 A5 - Angie Scarr Still life table (1858) by Danish artist William Hammer Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Teaching language is English. In the three days we will learn how to make different types of realistic fruit. Grapes, oranges, melons and figs as well as fig leaves and orange tree branches. We will 'marble' a table top to recreate the painting. As with all my classes what you take home is more important than what you complete in class and students will create at their own pace. The major material used will be polymer clay. Materials I will provide: Polymer clay, flower wires, glues, paints, blades etc. Cost of these materials 15 euros (about 120 DKK). Remember you will have lots of left over canes etc. to use at home. Materials to be brought in by student: A plain table. And you can source the materials below marked with a star, or you can choose to let me source them for you * I will be trying to source and bulk buy good quality versions of the baskets and wine bottle, white plate and knife. The estimated cost of these items is an extra 25-30 euros (about 200-240 DKK) Students can bring their own cheaper versions of these items if they prefer. Tools: A pasta machine is useful but not essential for this class. You'll also need a ceramic tile or work surface. Your own tools can be brought at your own risk but all necessary tools will be provided. 9 A6 - Tine Krijnen Bookbinding Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The teaching language is English. Bookbinding two books on a sewingframe. - Liber Amicorum ( autograph book ) - A book by your choice. There is a choice of five titles, including two newly published In this three days workshop students will sew/bind, with the help of a sewing frame, two books. One book will be an autograph/liber Amicorum. This book has the three first pages of the Liber Amicorum of Jacob Heyblock (1623-1690). In this time these books (in Latin alba amicorum) were especially popular among students, who travel from university to university. They take the small books on a journey. When they meet people they do not want to forget, they ask you to write them something in their album. These are usually short quotations and expressions of friendship with a date and a signature. We, miniaturists, have friends around the world. Wouldn’t this miniature book be an album, a rememberance, forever a treasure in your Dolls House - Especially with a silver clasp of Jens Torp as closure. The clasp can be made in the two days class of Jens Torp in Tune, a chance of a lifetime, or being ordered in advance for this book. The second book students will sew will be a book by their own choice. They can choose out of two new miniature publications ready in March 2016, or one of the already published titles, for example the Tulip book. If time permits students will have the opportunity to tool a title on their second book. Material fee € 40.00 (320 DKK) to be paid to the teacher during class. The sewing frame will be available to use during class. 10 A7 - Jeffry Antonis Roombox with “wooden” panels Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Teaching language is English. During this class you will learn how to paint the walls/panels to simulate a fancy wooden pattern. When finished you’ve created a nice little roombox to display some of your precious/special miniature pieces! A lot of diverse skills will be learned to create this lovely roombox, which will measure 31cm wide, 31cm high and 30 cm deep when completed. There’s a choice for a large stained glass window or a shorter one with a little window seat. For the background you can bring along a picture of your garden, favorite spot, favorite season etc. to give it a more personal touch. A real wooden floor will finish of this room. When we have more than plenty of time there’s the opportunity to learn how to marble-paint the fireplace. This is quite a large piece to be made during these 3 days and uses up a lot of materials. The material costs are 110 euro’s (880 DKK) to be paid to the teacher during class. 11 B1 - Bill Robertson Lutyen’s Chippendale Garden Bench Thursday and Friday Teaching language is English. Sir Edwin Lutyens has been called Britain's greatest Architect. He designed many buildings throughout the world and was a major force in the creation of Queen Mary's Doll House now on display at Windsor Castle. But one of his most timeless designs was a Chippendale style garden bench he created for his dear friend Gertrude Jekyll, the famous garden designer. These benches are still sold today and can found in both formal and country style gardens everywhere. This is a fairly aggressive project for a 2 day class due to the number of pieces. The instructor has gone to great lenghts to figure out time saving methods to build the bench quickly. Special techniques will be taught on how to assemble furniture so it sits straight and square. Students will start by shaping the 4 curved seat supports in a special jig to assure they are level. While these are being glued in place in an MDF jig the seat slat edges will be rounded to give the bench a soft feel. The gentle angle of the back will done with a “shoot board” type fixture assuring the parts line up straight. Then using templates and a jewelers saw the front legs and back crest rail will be cut out and pinned together. The templates will also have the holes located to line up the 6 pieces in each arm. Using a Proxxon mill or drill press, the slots for the horizontal back slats will be cut parallel to each other. These slats can have cross lap joints cut in them or thinner ones glued in place. When the back is assembled it will be pinned and glued to the seat and stretchers with alignment fixtures. The last step, which can be a little time consuming is to cut and fit each arm piece to the exact length and pin it into the pre drilled holes. The bench will be made of a soft wood which is easily sanded to give it that soft and comfortable feeling. It can be left natural or painted. This inviting bench is 14.5 CM long and would be a charming addition to any miniature garden. Some wood working experience would be helpful as this is a lot to do in only 2 days. A note about the higher materials fee, this is due to the exchange rate and number of precut parts, jigs and fixtures that will have to be shipped. Materials fee 600 DKK, payable in DKK, Euro or USD to the teacher in class. 12 B2 - Valeria Bonomi Handbag, high heels sandals, wallet and hat Thursday and Friday The teaching language is English. In this class students will learn how to build a bi-color leather handbag with chains as handles, a pair of high plateau heels sandals, and a pretty summer hat with a lot of details. Students will use different materials such as leather, metal chains and a particular air drying clay for soles. They will learn also the technique for modeling the high plateau heels soles, right and left. Students will learn how to use two different kind of glue, in particular a tissue glue one, very fast and transparent that I will bring for them. Students will receive, as a gift, a fine tip glue applicator, perfect for the use they will have to do. Tools required: 2 pairs of small scissors; 1 with curved points and 1 with straight points, both very sharp. 1 pair of tweezers with fine tips. The material fee is 400 DKK to be paid to the teacher in class. 13 B3 Jamie Carrington An Introduction to Sculpting the Head and Features in Polymer Clay Thursday and Friday Teaching language is English. For students wary of sculpting a full figure but would like to learn the merits of polymer clay this class will give an opportunity to discover the artist in you. We’ll investigate Jamie’s new technique to produce a 1/12th scale bust of a male and female. Students will have the freedom to create anything from a Roman general, a Greek god, an 18th century lady or anything else the student wishes. A stand will be supplied to give the finished effect. Materials fee 200 DKK, to be paid to the teacher during class. 14 B4 - Jens Torp A Small Silver Item Thursday and Friday Teaching languages are English and Danish. There is a choice of items to choose from for this class. - A silver clasp for a book by Tine Krijnen. The book can be made in Tine's class. If you do not want to take that class the book can be purchased from Tine at Tune. - A Quaich. This is a special drinking cup or bowl in Scotland. It is commonly used for tasting whiskey. - A cake slice from the Georgian period. In this class students will have the opportunity to learn several silver making techniques. I will demonstrate how to file, dome, use a drill, solder and use a piercing saw. The items will be prepared for polishing and that technique will also be taught. Materials fee to be paid to the teacher during the class is 250 DKK. 15 B5 - Angie Scarr Olive tree Thursday and Friday Teaching language is English. For the 2 day class we will make an olive tree which can stand alone or be incorporated into the garden project from last year. The information for completing a base will be provided well ahead of time, and materials (which can be very reasonably priced) can be chosen from a number of suppliers. In the class we will make and paint the tree on the first day. If time permits we will start attaching the leaves. On the morning of the second day we will make and attach the olives and then finish attaching the leaves. This will be a relaxed class as the leaves are already made for you and sticking them on is a meditative if a slightly repetitive process! This was very much enjoyed last year as a nice relaxed antidote to the intensity of the first three days! Materials to be brought in by student: Base, soil block or mound. Information will be provided. (If you wish garden bases or soil blocks can be made for you at additional cost) You'll also need a small pair of scissors and small pliers. Materials I will provide:- Tree parts, wires, polymer clay, paints etc. And a large pack of superfine leaves. Total 25 euros (about 200 DKK) To be payed to the teacher in class. 16 B6 – Tine Krijnen Leather book with hidden compartment Thursday and Friday The classes are taught in English. In the old days, people used books with an hidden compartment to store or hide their valuables. In the two days workshop we will work on one of these leather books. Students will have the choice out of three: 1- A book with two closures and a compartment for a pistol. 2- A book for in a men’s library with a hidden liquor bottle. The gold tooled title shield on the spine of the book reveals the content, Whiskey. 3- Or a jewelry book with rings and necklaces. The first day we will be busy with learning how to make a bookblockstrip, making headband, cutting the compartment, The second day we will work on the different covers and the typical parts for the chosen books. Closures on the pistol book, or tooling the title shield for the liquor book or making the jewelry for the book. In Spring, students will receive an email in which they can express their preference for a particular book. It is possible to change this preference up to 4 weeks prior to the workshop. Material fee 25 Euro (200 DKK) to be payed to the teacher during class. 17 B7 - Jeffry Antonis Introduction to upholstery Thursday and Friday Teaching language is English.
