Community Grant Program allocated over $78,000+ in June 2014 to 34 local social service agencies,
supporting them in their efforts to respond to client needs throughout the South Bay.
Our Philanthropy and Community Service programs are the “heart” of Sandpipers. A
portion of the money that Sandpipers raises from our fundraising events goes to fund
these programs, which help a wide variety of people right here in our South Bay
community.
Philanthropy Programs
Sandpipers is celebrating 83 years of philanthropic outreach to those most in need in our community. Over the years, Sandpipers has touched the lives of thousands of individuals, children and families
through our programs. Below are some highlights of the heart of our organization:
Scholarship Program provides four-year college scholarships to more than 44 high school students from
the South Bay. In 2013-2014, Sandpipers allocated over $190,000 for the Scholarship program.
Back-To-School Shopping provides new clothing, shoes, backpacks, school supplies, and joy for 78
children dealing with domestic violence, living in shelters, or struggling with their families to overcome a
financial crisis.
Holiday Baskets Program provides more than 113 families with grocery scrip, basic household necessity
items, first-aid kits and sleeping bags, as well as shoe certificates and gifts for 292 children.
Sugarplum grants holiday wishes to more than 2,000 children in the Los Angeles foster care system. Handmade ornaments with a child’s age and gift wish are hung on a Christmas tree displayed in a local
shopping mall. Shoppers choose one or more of the “wish ornaments” and purchase the gift(s) for the
children. Sandpipers coordinates the collection and delivery of these gifts, which are often the only
presents the children will receive for the Holidays.
Summer Arts organizes and teaches a nine-week arts program made available to underprivileged
children and senior citizens living in the South Bay. The classes are always eagerly anticipated by
students, young and old, ready to create their own pieces of original artwork.
School Nurse Program supplies school nurses in 10 local districts with shoe certificates and sweatshirts to
provide more than 148+ children with proper footwear and clothing.
General Casework Fund provides hope and immediate financial assistance by paying for food, rent,
clothes, etc. for individuals and families suffering through a temporary financial crisis.
Community Service Programs
TeamWorks Beach Party Sandpipers partners with LA Team Mentoring to host a beach party for 78+ at-risk
middle school students who have completed the LATM mentoring program. The children are treated to a
day at the beach including lunch, games, and surf lessons.
Done in a Day Sandpipers organizes volunteer projects for members to complete all of their required
Community Service points in one day. In the past, these projects have included cleaning a beach,
painting or refurbishing a building, and planning a party for underprivileged children.
