One Down, Three to Go for Wisconsin’s Massive
Elkhorn Antique Flea Market
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
On Sunday, May 19th, the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn,
Wisconsin once again hosted the massive N.L. Promotions Elkhorn Antique
Flea Market. Back in 1982, when they held their first shows, they were
happy if fifty dealers showed up. Now, more than three decades later, 500,
600, even 800 dealers turn out for each of the four shows held every summer, at what has become one of the Midwest’s biggest and best indoor/outdoor antique events. With that many dealers, you know you’re going to find
what you’re looking for, whether it’s classic or kitsch, and probably at a great
price too!

Great Weather, Great Crowd, at the May Elkhorn
Antique Flea Market
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
They say bigger is better, but in the case of antiques markets, that often is not the case. We’ve all seen numerous “antiques
markets” slowly degenerate into everyday flea markets. But even though the N.L. Promotions Elkhorn Antique Market is
one of the biggest around, it’s still one of the highest quality indoor/outdoor antique markets in the Midwest.
At the inaugural Elkhorn Antique Market show in 1982, it was just a few dozen lonely dealers arranged in a circle in the
middle of a field. As the show grew, dealers spilled into more and more of the fairground buildings. Today, pretty much
the entire fairgrounds are taken up with the hundreds of exhibitors from near & far.
The dealers here run the gamut, from professional show dealers with high-end antiques to weekenders with old family
treasures. Some have been coming since that very first season. Others, like Cody Manley, were set up here for the very
first time. Cody came with a great selection of Mid Century Modern furniture and accessories, and sold much of it within an hour of the show’s opening. Among the sold pieces: a pristine Contour Chair-Lounge sporting its original mossgreen upholstery.
Things couldn’t have looked more different than down the aisle at Jr. Pickers’ display. A group of antique alabaster busts
filled one corner of their tent, surrounded by everything from a carved mahogany rocker to a Gothic Revival walnut picture frame. And right next door sat Chicago architect Walter Myers, who brought an eclectic assortment of architectural
ornaments including stone column capitols and terra cotta ornaments - plus all the parts to make your very own windmill.
Whether you’re looking for funky furniture or fine art, vintage jewelry or vintage fashions, or pretty much anything else,
you’ll find it here in quantity. It’s all here in one place, at prices that are just as attractive as the merchandise. Whether
you’re a dealer, decorator, or just a casual collector like me, I can’t imagine a day spent at Elkhorn wouldn’t be a productive one.
The Elkhorn Antique Flea Market is a one-day event, so get there early. Parking is free, and admission only five bucks.
The gates open at 7:00 am, but you’ll still be hard pressed to see even close to all of the hundreds of dealers at any given
show. Luckily, there are four shows every summer. You still have three more chances to get here in 2013: June 30th,
August 11th, or the season finale on September 29th. That September show often the biggest and best attended one of the
year. Dates for the 2014 season are already set too, with Elkhorn Antique Flea Markets scheduled for May 18th, June 29th,
August 10th, and September 28th. And if you need an “antique fix” this winter, N.L. Promotions, operators of the Elkhorn
Antique Flea Market, also manage the West Bend Antiques Show, held this winter at the Washington County Fair Park on
January 18th & 19th. Be sure to check out their website, www.nlpromotionsllc.com, for more details on all of the events.
And as always, keep an eye out for all of their upcoming show listings in the Auction Action Antique News!

Millers Auction Co. Sells Advertising Sign & Oil
Can Collection in Tomah, Wisconsin
Article & Photos by Glenn Miller
June 1st was the first beautiful day in Midwest Wisconsin in a few weeks. The auction drew a rather small crowd, competing with graduations, weddings, yard work
and other auctions in the area. But that did not keep the auction from doing well.
Many items sold well and there were a few deals for the guys who were paying attention. Auctioneer Tim Barnum did a bang up job selling around 100 items per hour.
Owner Glenn Miller of Millers Auction Company is always
looking for advertising collections to auction or he also
buys collections. The next advertising consignment auction
Millers has Scheduled is Dec 6th and 7th. They already have
100 lots consigned, so if you are interested in consigning

Red Wing Collectors Society Convention Hands-On
Pottery Experience With Richard Spiller To Feature
International Potter Aba Luostarinen
Red Wing, MN - The Red Wing Collectors
Society announces today that Aba Luostarinen, a
student potter from Finland, will join Richard
Spiller at the 2013 Convention - Diggin' Red
Wing slated for July 11-13 at Red Wing High
School in Red Wing, MN.
Spiller traveled to Finland and Estonia this
past year. In August 2012,
he participated in the Eco
Ceramics workshop that
brought together ceramic
artists from Latvia, Estonia
and Finland at Kohila in Estonia. Spiller returned in January to
give master class workshops at the HAMK University of Applied
Sciences in Finland and the Estonian Academy of Art - EAA.
While participating in the workshops, Spiller learned that
ceramics students had a program requirement for an international ceramics experience; he met student Aba Luostarinen, who
was looking for an opportunity. Since his return in January,
Spiller worked with the universities and Luostarinen on creating a
pilot program to Minnesota.
Spiller approached RWCS Executive Director Stacy Wegner about the
possibility of Luostarinen joining his RWCS Convention Hands-On Pottery session
as part of the exchange program. By including Luostarinen, it would give him the
opportunity to expand the Convention session and encompass it with the exchange
program.
“Having Aba join Richard this year to expand the Hands-On Pottery
Experience for our Convention attendees is a ground breaking addition to the
Convention,” said Wegner. “We're excited to be a part of the exchange program.”
“I am very excited to have Aba join me at the RWCS Convention this year
to share Red Wing Pottery with an international student as part of her exchange experience,” said Spiller.
With Luostarinen's assistance, Spiller's 2013 Convention Hands on Pottery
Experience will be offered to attendees on both Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July
12 at Red Wing High School. Participants in the two-hour session times will have the
opportunity to learn pottery techniques and make their own creation. Following the
Convention, the pieces will be fired in the Anderson Center kiln and
shipped to participants; the cost is $35.
In addition to the Red Wing Collectors Society Convention,
contacts with the Northern Clay Center, Anderson Center and
experience in Spillers studio will make up a five week university accredited program to pave the way for future exchange
programs.
Luostarinen, 27, lives in Hämeenlinna, Finland and is a student at HAMK University of Applied Sciences. Luostarinen is
finishing her studies as a glass and ceramic designer. Her interest and experience is in using ecological materials in ceramics. And, like Spiller, she's also
interested in wood and gas firing kilns. More of her work can be seen on
her website: http://abaluostarinen.fi.
Richard Spiller joined the RWCS Convention educational program
last year through a pre-Convention hands-on pottery class at the Anderson
Center and pottery demonstrations at Red Wing High School during the
Convention. The class gave RWCS members the opportunity to apply the Scraffito
(scratching) technique to a crock.
The Red Wing Collectors Society Convention is July 11-13, 2013 at Red
Wing High School in Red Wing. To learn more about the annual Convention, or the
Red Wing Collectors Society, visit http://www.redwingcollectors.org or find them on
Facebook or follow on Twitter.

The New Sunday At Sandwich Antiques Show Is Alive & Thriving
The New Sunday at Sandwich Antiques Show
is alive and thriving. After two second-Sunday events
of May and June, the Blue Antique Productions group
can look happily forward to continued support from
dealers and enthusiastic visitors. The Sunday at
Sandwich Antiques event will occur again on July 14,
August 11 and October 13 at the historic Sandwich
Fairgrounds in Sandwich, Illinois. This park-like
venue boasts dealers exhibiting in buildings, tents, and
on the manicured lawns under mature trees. Sunday
at Sandwich Antiques Show is the only antiques market
held at the Sandwich Fairgrounds.
Sunday at Sandwich is not a flea market, but
variety is encouraged by the management. Visitors
will find quality Americana, collectibles, garden fare,
mid century modern, re-purposed items, advertising,
industrial pieces, and some glitz and jewelry. No new
craft items are allowed, but vintage folk art is welcomed.
Paved walkways between areas facilitates
handicapped visitors to shop in their wheel chairs or
with their walkers. It also helps young moms with
children in strollers, too. Parking is free at Sunday at
Sandwich Antiques and admission is only $5.00, with
under 12, free. A variety of food vendors are always
on hand, and attended restrooms are always clean.
Early buyers may shop on set-up Saturday and early
Sunday for a $20 fee. Dealer inquiries are invited.
An added plus for customers to the market is
the opportunity to also visit the several antiques malls
and shops in the quaint town of Sandwich. One can
shop as long as one has energy to do so. Only 62 miles
from Chicago, and 75 from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin,
it's worth the trip to see all of the offerings. Visit
www.sundayatsandwichantiques and facebook for
more information.

It’s Back! Banowetz Antiques July 4th Sale
Submitted by Kathy Banowetz
That’s right. After a three year hiatus we decided to
bring back the Traditional July 4th Sale @
Banowetz Antiques in Maquoketa, Iowa. After 40
years of never having a July 4th off Virl & I decided to move the sale back to an Anniversary Sale in
June. That was three years ago, but our customers
were and are used to a sale over the 4th
of July. So we are bringing it back by
popular demand. From now until July
8th, many of our 50 plus dealers will be
offering 20% - 25% discounts. Some dealer discounts will be less
and some will be up to
50% off the regular price.
Brunswick
It all began in 1970 when we opened
back bar
w/matching our store in Maquoketa on the Caves
front bar. Road. The first year we collected names
from checks and sent out about 200 postcards inviting customers to come over the July 4th weekend and save 10% on their purchase. In those days a
round oak able was selling for about $40 - $60 dollars
and pressed back chairs were about $8 - $10 each. And
R.S. Prussia
we sold everything as is! Throughout all the growth and
Rose
Tankard.
changes in our business over the past 40 plus years we continued
the July 4th sale. It grew to a Show and Sale where we set up tents to better display
the inventory and sent out color catalogues showing a sampling of what was available.
If you haven’t visited our new mall yet now is the time! Customer response
to the smaller building is positively amazing. Actually “amazing” is the word used
most frequently by our customers when they see how much inventory we have in
the smaller space as well as how diverse and organized it is. Even though we have
a smaller building the inventory is still one of
the biggest in the state, especially when
it comes to furniture and lighting.
With over fifty dealers, plus the
mammoth Banowetz Antiques
inventory, there is much to
choose from.
See the burled walnut
dental cabinet; revolving bookcases; Larkin curved glass china
cabinets; the heavily carved tall case
clock;
the Brunswick oak back bar with
Glass dome
matching front bar; Peoria, Western & Redwing
w/constellations on
it, made by Kinsella Glass stoneware; the railroad memorabilia, book & coin
Co. in Chicago, IL c. 1914. dealer’s booths & showcases; sideboards and servers
in several styles; Victorian parlor & bedroom furniture; and country American furniture for every room in your home. Choose from
over 100 dining room tables and 100’s of chairs. Of course we carry a full line of
china, glassware, and collectibles in most categories.
PLUS this year we are opening up our warehouse in the country. For those
of you who remember the chairs hanging from the rafters and tables stacked 2 & 3
high, come and visit for old time’s sake. You’ll have lots of fun poking around.
Some pieces are refinished, some not, and there are lots of projects for the do-ityourself enthusiast. AND you’ll have a chance once again to see the fabulous
stained glass dome made by the Kinsella Glass Company in Chicago, c. 1914.
Virl and I thank you for your past patronage and look forward to seeing you soon.
