What’ s New in V O L U M E Board of Directors: Bill Marvin, Chairman Daphne Wood, Vice-Chairman 4 , I S S U E 3 J U L Y , 2 0 1 2 FHF Challenges SRWMD On Proposed Private Lease of Public Land A proposal by the Suwannee River Management District (SRWMD) to lease 836 acres of public land, located along the Sante Fe River and known as the “Mud Swam Tract,” was withdrawn from consideration after testimony in opposition from several hunting organizations, including The Future of Hunting in Florida. The unprecedented move to lease the Mud Swamp Tract would have provided exJeff Allen, clusive recreational use of the property for hunting and fishing purposes. An adTreasurer jacent landowner submitted the high bid of $20.25 per acre. FHF Chairman Bill Marvin appeared before the SRWMD Board on June 12th, at Lane Stephens, a Board workshop on July 5th, and again before the Board on July 10th to speak Secretary in strong opposition to the proposal. Also appearing before the Board and speaking in opposition were Lane Stephens, (representing FHF and Allied Sportsmen’s Newton Cook Barbara Jean Powell Association of Florida), Stephen Williamson, (representing United Waterfowlers Preston Robertson Florida), Jim Casselman (representing United Hunter of Florida), and Bill Wilson Steve Shea (representing the Florida Bowhunter’s Council). The united effort led the ChairBill Wilson man to withdraw the item from the agenda and to state that as long as he was chairman, the issue would never come before the Board again. John D. Fuller Chairman Marvin stated that the proposed private lease was in violation of Executive Director Section 373.1391, F.S., which provides “Whenever practicable, such lands shall be open to the general public for recreational uses.” He also pointed out that it was INSIDE THIS ISSUE: contrary to the District’s own Land Management Plan, which provides in part, “The 2nd Annual Sports2 District does not offer exclusive hunting or fishing rights to any individual or men ’ s Banquet group.” Successful Speakers thanked the Board for withdrawing the issue and offered input as “stakeholders” anytime in the future that recreational issues are to be considered. FHF also agreed to support the District in seeking more legislative funding 2012-2013 Florida 3 for land management. The issue of mitigating the District’s costs through interHunting Season Dates agency agreements will be discussed at a September workshop and FHF will be there to ensure that additional public lands are opened for public hunting. Dates Set for Hunts at FHF Hunt Club The Future of Hunting in Florida has again leased the 2,050 acres south of Wewahitchka, FL, for 2012-13 Hunting Season for the exclusive purpose of hosting youth and Wounded Warrior hunts. This year, we’ve expanded the number of stands and food plots to accommodate twelve hunters on each hunt. In addition to the hunts below, FHF will host three additional youth hunts for groups who donated to FHF in support of the lease. Open spots are available for the following upcoming weekends: Youth Archery Oct. 26, 27, 28 Wounded Warrior Archery Nov. 16, 17, 18 Youth Gun Dec. 7, 8, 9 Youth Gun Dec. 28, 29, 30 Wounded Warrior Gun Feb. 1, 2, 3 Youth Muzzeloader Feb. 22, 23, 24 To sign up, contact John Fuller @ (850) 509-4099 or [email protected] . PAGE 2 2nd Annual Sportsmen’s Banquet Successful FHF held its 2nd Annual Sportsmen’s Banquet at the North Florida Fairgrounds on Saturday, June23, 2012, and it was big success. Approximately 120 adults and children attended the event that featured silent and live auctions and gun raffles, and raised funds on behalf of the organization. We had a great seafood dinner and lots of activities for the kids, including an indoor range with air guns, a bean bag-inthe-hole toss and a rope ladder toss. Three Wounded Warriors were our special guests: -Pete Herrick, with his wife Diana and father-in-law, Chuck Wilder; -Joe Caley, with his wife Mary; and, -Cody Chism, with his wife Vanessa and their two children. We had a special drawing between Joe and Cody for a nine-day, South African safari hunt, which was donated by Steve Greenwell of the Tallahassee Chapter of Safari Club International. Cody Chism of Perry, FL won the coin flip and received the $9400 value which included $3000 in trophy fees and $6400 in guide service and accommodations. Everyone then took up a collection of $1800 for his airfare and expenses to give him the hunt and trip of a lifetime. Cody and his son Gavin attended the Wounded Warrior archery hunt in November of last year and harvested a nice doe at our Wounded Warrior gun hunt this past February. Hopefully, he will bring us back some great pictures from Africa! Because of the banquet, FHF was again able to renew the 2,050 lease near Wewahitchka, FL, for the 2012-13 hunting season. This is the third year in a row we have leased the property for youth and Wounded Warriors and FHF would like to thank the following individuals for the generous donation of metal, tower stands: - Donnie Read of Twin Oaks Juvenile Development in Bristol, FL; - Mark Demont of Demont Insurance Agency and Financial Services in Tallahassee, FL;, and, - David Byler of Body Builders Paint & Body Shop in Tallahassee, FL. We still have a need for additional stands and if you or a company you know would like to sponsor a stand for a $350 donation, you will be recognized on signs inside the stand, at the pole barn, and in our newsletter. The stands are only three feet off of the ground and have metal steps—great for kids and Wounded Warriors. Your donation is also tax deductible!
