consumers need an opportunity to hear what is
available now, and providers want a forum in which
to explain their products
and services. The Senior
Expo is designed to serve
that purpose,” said Senator
Solobay.
“This is a great opportunity for the senior citizens in our community to
learn about programs that
can help in every aspect of
life,” added Representative Neuman.
“Free, fun and informative, the annual Senior Expo is an event that
should not be missed,”
said Representative
White. “It’s rare that so
many local organizations
and elected officials are
all under the same roof at
the same time, so this is
truly a wonderful opportunity for seniors to stop by,
have all of their questions
answered, and have a good
time in the process.”

the changing needs. The
one factor that remains
constant, however, is that
adno=5907307
Rarely do you hear
the words “baby boomers” without hearing that
10,000 of them turn 65
years of age each day,
the outcome of which is
a number that creates inevitable change in needs
as well as services. The
vast span in the ages that
now define the term “older
adult,” makes it difficult
to keep up, not only for
the individual, but also for
the providers of services.
In addition to the different needs that the baby
boomers have relative to
those older adults who
have been coping with
the results of aging for
decades, there are environmental, economic, and
technological changes that
make keeping pace more
of a challenge.

Social Security to continue
issuing verification letters
out of field offices
In August, the Senior Times published a
notification from the Social Security Administration
that benefit verification letters, with few exceptions,
would soon no longer be provided at Social
Security field offices. More recent information
has been issued noting that “to ensure there are
no detrimental consequences,” the Social Security
office has decided to continue to provide benefit
verification letters out of their field offices until
further notice. Social Security will revisit the
implementation of the change periodically, until
such a time as consumers become more accustomed
to using their online tools and data exchanges.
For security and privacy reasons, however,
Social Security has eliminated the issuance of Social
Security number printouts in their field offices.
2014 Senior & Veterans Fair
State Representative Timothy S. Mahoney
will sponsor the 2014 Senior & Veterans
Fair on Friday, October 24, at Uniontown
Mall, 1368 Mall Run Road, Uniontown.
There will be refreshments, door
prizes, health screenings, and vendors
who will answer questions and provide
information for seniors and veterans.

Seniors—Don’t wait vaccinate
For most people, getting the flu means feeling
achy and feverish for a
week or so, but for people
65 years and older, the
flu can be much more
serious. People in this
age group are at high risk
for severe flu illness and
complications. In fact,
an estimated 60 percent
of flu-related hospitalizations in the United States
occur in this age group
each year. Last season flu
illness was particularly
severe for people 65 and
older, prompting the CDC
to report the highest flurelated hospitalization
rates in this age group
since it began tracking the
information in the 20052006 flu season.
Unfortunately, it has
been reported that the vaccine against one particular
flu virus last season did
not work as well as expected to protect people
65 and older. If that news
left you asking yourself
whether getting a flu vaccine this season is still
worthwhile for people 65
and older, the answer is
absolutely and unquestionably, “Yes!”
There are plenty of
reasons for people 65 and
older to get a flu vaccination this year, and the
main reason is that vaccinations remain the first,
best and most important
step in protecting against
flu illness and its complications.
While the benefits of
flu vaccination can vary–
particularly among people
65 and older –studies

Age and income guidelines apply.
Call today to schedule a visit or for
additional information:
show that vaccination
can provide a range of
benefits, including reducing flu illness, antibiotic
use, doctor’s visits, lost
work, and even helping
to prevent hospitalizations
and deaths.
In fact, a recent study
by CDC and Vanderbilt
University experts found
that flu vaccination reduced the risk of flu-related hospitalization by
nearly 77 percent in study
participants 50 years of
age and older during the
2011-2012 flu season.
Other studies have
found that flu vaccination
reduces the risk of death
in older adults. For people
with certain underlying
heart conditions, several
studies indicate that flu
vaccination can reduce
the risk of a heart attack.
Overall, there is significant evidence to support
the benefits of vaccination
in people 65 and older.
If you are in this age
group, there are two flu
vaccine options available to choose from this
season: the standard flu
shot and a high-dose flu
shot made and approved
specifically for people 65
years of age and older.
The high-dose vaccine
contains more antigen
(the part of the vaccine
that helps your body build
up protection against flu
viruses) than the regular
flu shot, and this extra
antigen is intended to produce a stronger immune
response in seniors. CDC
does not have a preference
for which vaccine seniors
should get this season.
“Either the regular flu shot
or the high-dose vaccine
are perfectly acceptable
options for people 65 and
older this season,” said
Dr. Alicia Fry with CDC’s
Influenza Division. “The
important thing is to get
vaccinated because it’s
still the best protection
currently available against
the flu.”
Flu season in the United States can begin as
early as October and last
as late as May.
If you ever had a serious allergic reaction to
eggs or to a previous dose
of influenza vaccine, or
if you have a history of
Guillain Barré Syndrome
(GBS), you should talk
with your doctor before
you take the vaccine.
If you are ill at the
time the shot is scheduled,
you should also talk with
your doctor or nurse about
whether to reschedule the
vaccination.
After you have a flu
shot, mild problems may
occur such as soreness,
redness, or swelling
where the shot was given,
fever, and aches. If you
are going to experience
problems, they will usually begin soon after the
shot is administered and
last 1-2 days. Although
rare, a vaccine, like any
medicine, is capable of
causing serious problems,
such as severe allergic
reactions. If they are going to occur, it is within
a few minutes to a few
hours after the shot. Signs
of a serious allergic reaction can include difficulty
breathing, hoarseness or
wheezing, hives, paleness, weakness, a fast
heart beat or dizziness. If
you or someone you know
has a severe reaction, call
your doctor or call 911.

the response was, “Sorry,

When it was answered, a

an elaborate message
about qualifying for a

and then into an offer for
$100 in rebate vouchers.
Then, the recording said,
“Please hang up.”
The caller, basically,
did all the right things.
When you receive a call
from someone you do not
know regarding something personal, more than
likely, you should just
hang up, which she did.
She proactively tried to
report what she assumes
was an attempt to scam
her out of something.
In addition to the above
calls, calls to the IRS
were unsuccessful. Telephone numbers were no
longer in service; calls
that were answered, with
recordings, did not allow callers to talk to
anyone. Attempts were
made to reach various
IRS numbers listed online. However, in each

Aerobic Activity Helps Build Bigger Brains
People already suffering mild cognitive impairment benefit most.
Another study has
shown that aerobic activity, such as brisk walking,
boosts your brain—actually increasing the size of
the hippocampus, a key
part of the inner brain involved in forming, storing
and processing memory.
When compared to an
earlier study of cognitively
healthy older adults, moreover, the findings suggest
that aerobic exercise offers
greatest benefits to those
who need it most: people
with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often a
precursor to Alzheimer’s
disease.
“While the findings
from these studies showed
a greater benefit of aerobic
exercise in individuals
with MCI, a number of
previous studies have provided evidence that regular
exercise decreases the risk
for cognitive decline over
time,” says Tammy Scott,
PhD, a scientist at Tufts’
HNRCA Neuroscience and
Aging Laboratory. “The
results from these current
studies shouldn’t be taken
as an excuse to wait to start
an exercise program.”
BRAIN BUILDING
The new findings, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine,
analyzed data from the
earlier Exercise for Cognition and Everyday Living (EXCEL) trial. This
secondary analysis, which
researchers said was the
first of its kind, looked at
86 women, ages 70 to 80,
already suffering MCI.
Participants were di-
vided into three groups
for a six-month study
period: One group engaged in a twice-weekly
aerobic walking program,
designed to increase in
intensity to 70% to 80% of
each individual’s age-specific target heart rate. (See
box.) A second group was
assigned to a resistancetraining regimen, while
a control group did only
balance and stretching
activities. MRI scans were
used to assess changes in
brain volume.
At the study’s conclusion, those in the aerobics
group saw a 5.6% increase
in the left hippocampus, a
2.5% increase in the right
hippocampus, and a 4%
increase in total hippocampus volume. Neither the
resistance-training group
nor the control group experienced significant increases in hippocampal
volume.
AEROBICS VS. AGING
Researchers Teresa
Liu-Ambrose, PhD, of
the University of British Columbia, and colleagues commented on
their results: “With respect to dementia risk, the
hippocampus is a brain
structure of intense interest. The hippocampus is
sensitive to aging effects
and significant hippocampal atrophy is a hallmark
of [Alzheimer’s disease].
Thus, understanding the
effect of exercise on the
hippocampus will increase
our appreciation of the
role exercise may play in
dementia prevention.”
They noted that the
increases in hippocampal volume among those
with MCI were double
that observed in a previous study of cognitively
healthy older adults. In that
study, participants were
assigned to a 12-month,
three-times-weekly aerobic exercise regimen.
Liu-Ambrose noted
that the comparison seems

to suggest that the degree
of benefit, in terms of brain
structure, might be greater
in people with early cognitive impairment than in
healthy older people. In
an interview, she added,
“The relationship between
physical activity and brain
health is pretty robust and
has been demonstrated in
healthy older adults, but
we haven’t known much
about its impact in people
with MCI who have the
greatest risk for dementia.”
Heart Rate
According to the
American Heart Association, your maximum heart
rate is about 220 minus
your age (155 beats per
minute for age 65, for example). When you start an
exercise program, such as
brisk walking, you should
aim for about 50% of that
maximum. As you get into
shape, gradually increase
until you’re achieving
about 85% of maximum.
To see how you’re doing, as you exercise, periodically:
Take your pulse on
the inside of your wrist,
on the thumb side.
Use the tips of your first
two fingers (not your
thumb) to press lightly
over the blood vessels on
your wrist.
Count your pulse for
10 seconds and multiply
by 6 to find your beats per
minute.
A few high blood pressure medications lower the
maximum heart rate and
thus the target zone rate;
check with your physician.
If you have a heart condition or you’re in cardiac
rehab, talk to a healthcare
professional about what
exercise you can engage
in, what your target heart
rate should be and whether
you need to be monitored
during physical activity.

WALK TO END
ALZHEIMER’S
The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take
place on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Washington Park, 283 Dunn Avenue, Washington, Pa. Start out with registration at the Stone Pavilion where
more than 300 people from Washington and the surrounding area have pledged
their support by participating in this year’s event to raise awareness and funds
to fight the disease. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the one-mile social walk
starts at 9:30 a.m.
Participants are invited to remain after the walk for breakfast, entertainment
and prize drawings.
The brain has 100 billion nerve cells and each combines with others to make
up a design of networks that perform special tasks such as thinking, learning and
remembering. In Alzheimer’s disease, as in other types of dementia, increasing
numbers of brain cells deteriorate and die. Please don’t sit in the dark after it
happens or sit and wait for it to affect you and your family. Move to make a
difference by taking part in this fundraiser.
For more information or to register to walk, call Abby Spreng at 412-2615040 or email [email protected]. You may also register online at alz.org by

September is National

theme is “Experts at Living Well.” That makes
September a perfect time
for senior centers in Washington County and their

to kick off a walking program that will demonstrate the theme, as well
as increase the size of the

“the size of the hippocampus, a key part of the inner

Employ Older Workers Week
The average age in the
United States is rising,
and the composition of the
workforce is rising with
it. By 2020, it is estimated
that workers 55 and over
will make up 25% of the
U.S. civilian labor force.
In addition, individuals,
whether by need or desire,
are tending to remain in
the workforce longer and
choosing to retire later.
The result is that a number
of workers over the traditional retirement age of
65 is increasing markedly
and by the year 2020 it is
expected to make up more
than 7% of the American
labor force by 2020.
Employ Older Workers Week is September 21
through 27 this year. The
purpose is to recognize the
vital role of older workers in the workforce, to
increase awareness of this
labor segment and to develop innovative strategies
