Oct 24 - Baptist Temple
VOLUME 70 OCTOBER 24, 2012 No. 20 Baptist Temple Church: A Century of Serving December 10, 1911—December 10, 2011 Long-Range Planning Jorge Zayasbazan Earlier this month we had a long range planning workshop. The church had reached a point where we needed to make decisions today that would position us for future ministry. On Friday evening we warmed up by sharing stories of past ministries that had an impact on our lives. Then we shared testimonies of present ministries that are helping Baptist Temple fulfill our vision and mission. Our hearts warmed by great memories and our spirits lifted by recent victories, we gathered in small groups to brainstorm and capture on paper where we felt God was leading us in the future. We were blessed with a broad representation of our church. We had long time members, some who joined this year and everything in between. Age groups were wellrepresented, too, from youth to octogenarians. The results of the brainstorming were categorized under five broad areas of church organization: Caring, Fellowship/Nurture, Outreach/Missions, Stewardship Worship On Saturday morning we divided up into interest areas and set priorities along with action items. A spirit of peace and cooperation dominated the weekend. The priorities revealed the heart of the church and set a clear course for the near future. The course will also establish a foundation for a more distant future as we continued on page 3 October is Pastor Appreciation Month and also Wesley Craig’s last month with us. A reception was held in Fellowship Hall after worship on October 21 to give us all a chance to speak words of appreciation and encouragement to both of them. Join the Christmas Choir! Join the Christmas Choir this year and be a part of presenting “A Light Still Shines” Everyone is invited! Simply come and practice with us on Wednesday evenings, 7:00 to 8:00 PM, in the sanctuary. Rehearsal CDs are available for additional home practice. The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. Matthew 4:16 Christ brought the light of God to people who were enslaved by governments, spiritual deadness, and deception. Today his redemption from these curses, and the life lived in spiritual harmony with God is still available. The legacy of Christ is told in this beautiful cantata. Come join in sharing the message of Christ this Christmas; come join the Christmas Choir! Thank You, Estelle! The Baptist Temple Church family wants to express our gratitude to Estelle Lindsey for making all the phone calls necessary to get the City of San Antonio out to repair the ally behind our buildings. This has been especially helpful to the many people who drive through or park in our east parking lot. City workers arrived on Thursday, October 18 and completed the work before the day was done. Thanks again, Estelle, for making so many follow-up phone calls in order to make sure that the job did not fall off the City’s “to-do” list! It took months and months of phone calls and we appreciate that you did not give up on the effort. By the way, if you’ve missed seeing Estelle in the worship choir on Sunday mornings, she has been in and out of the hospital recently and is currently in a physical rehabilitation facility on Huebner Rd. Pray for her recovery; we miss her smiling face around here! SA Baptists Churches Working Together to Fight Hunger Annual SABA Hunger Walk Saturday, November 10 9 AM to 12 NOON at Comanche Park #2 San Antonio Baptist Churches are again coming together on November 10th to make a difference in our city. San Antonio leads the state with 230,000 people in need of food on a daily basis; our food pantry team sees this need with their own eyes each month. The need is great! While the need is great, not every church in San Antonio has resources to meet the hunger needs of their community. That is why Baptists churches are uniting to raise money for ALL our Baptist church food pantries at the 3rd annual SABA Hunger Walk. We are still in need of participants to raise at least $100 and to participate in the walk. The more participants we have, the more money we raise, and the more money we will receive for our BTC Food Pantry. If you would like to pick up a participation packet and begin collecting money for yourself or your team, please see Wesley Craig or Joe Guinn. Together we can make a difference! Will you help? .Mary Hill Davis Offering For State Missions Baptist Temple Church Goal: $4,000 Received to Date: $3,005 This Isn’t Good-bye It’s hard to believe that three years have already passed and that the time has come to move on to what God has for me, Susan, and Meadow. While I am sad to leave, at the same time I am excited about what God has in store for us and for Baptist Temple. I am confident that ministry will continue on with the leadership of our community ministries and missions team and with the help of the many who have stepped up to take even more ownership and responsibilities in important ministries. I will be forever grateful for all the love, support, and generosity Baptist Temple Church has shown our family. Words cannot express how thankful I am that you gave me an opportunity to serve with you, that you believed in me enough to ordain me, and that you have supported us in our new church start effort. Susan and I also appreciate the church’s kind farewell reception and the many gifts you gave us. Even though I will no longer be on staff, I will still be around—you can’t get rid of me that easily! So, this really isn’t a goodbye; we will just see each other less often. Susan, Meadow and I will still be living down the street and we will continue to be around at various times and in various ways. You will continue to be in our prayers as we are confident that we will be in yours. With love, Wesley Long-Range from page 1 continue to be a witness to the gospel to our community.
