Annual Report 2013 North Coast Land Conservancy P.O. Box 67 Seaside, OR 97138 (503) 738-9126 www.nclctrust.org Lessons in Resilience In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. John Muir For Christmas this year, my mother gave me a LEGO kit for a scale-model 1962 VW camper van: 1,400 little pieces, ready to assemble. One look, and I was instantly transported back to 1982 and the nineweek road trip I took with my family that fall. I don’t remember many details of the trip—I was only four years old—but one place I remember clearly: Yellowstone National Park. Bison, rivers of warm water, geysers, and vast wilderness: I had never seen anything like it. I returned as a college student to study wolf and grizzly ecology. Between those two visits, the great wildfires of 1988 had swept through Yellowstone, and much of the park still looked blackened and barren nine years later. A decade after that I returned to Yellowstone once again and was stunned to find a wealth of plant and animal species thriving in that once-scorched landscape. You didn’t have to be a scientist to see that the fires weren’t actually devastating but cleansing, changing the landscape but leaving it healthy, strong and beautiful. Those lessons from Yellowstone have served me well this past year. As a staff, we were devastated when fire destroyed our offices in December 2012. But North Coast Land Conservancy itself wasn’t devastated. It emerged as a different organization but one that is healthy, strong and beautiful. I’m grateful for my weeks on what we called “the bus” so many years ago, and to my parents for exposing me to that wild country at such a young age. The land offers us so many valuable lessons, which is why I am so grateful for you. You have supported North Coast Land Conservancy and carried us through our year of upheaval, believing in our resilience and helping us to regenerate. And in so doing, you have helped us protect land on the Oregon Coast in perpetuity, giving that land the opportunity to grow and change over time, come what may. Bison and geysers are exciting, but we at North Coast Land Conservancy have something no less inspiring: the Oregon Coast! All we need to keep it healthy, strong and beautiful is you. Thank you. Katie Voelke Executive Director North Coast Land Conservancy Conservation Assistant Amy Hutmacher grew up in Alaska, focusing on environmental studies as an undergraduate student at the University of the Pacific and as a graduate student at Arizona State University. An opportunity to work with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife led her to the Oregon Coast. At NCLC, she supports both the conservation and land stewardship programs. ...a New Role... Associate Director Jon Wickersham assumed his new role in early 2013. As Conservation Director for three years prior, Jon provided leadership in planning, policy and landowner relationships. This set of strengths will now be expanded into our organizational planning and policy setting as Jon joins the executive leadership team. ... and New Board Members! Vianne Patterson grew up in Oswego and spent family vacations on the Oregon Coast. In 1964 she moved to Vancouver, B.C. where she became a communications company executive. She spent much of her free time scuba diving and sailing. She moved to Gearhart in 2004 and served as chair of NCLC’s Outreach Committee for two years before joining the board in February 2013. Originally from Michigan, Lisa Phipps has worked as both coastal resource planner and planning manager for Tillamook County. Currently she serves as executive director of the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership and as municipal judge for Rockaway Beach. A New Location for NCLC When our office at Circle Creek was destroyed by fire at the end of 2012, we spent some time in a temporary space, regrouping and trying to determine the best path forward for NCLC. Those next steps have led us to another unique and beautiful location, just across from NCLC’s Neawanna Point Habitat Reserve at the Necanicum Estuary. (Yes, this actually is the view from the new office!) Although we continue to explore options for an eventual return to Circle Creek, for now we’re secure and productive in our new location and happy to focus on our vision: a healthy Oregon Coast landscape where people, plants and wildlife all thrive. Many thanks to the foundations and individuals whose generous donations have helped NCLC move forward this year. BOARD Stewardship Director Melissa Reich grew up on Shelter Island, New York, site of The Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve, where she volunteered during high school and summers off from college. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology at Lewis & Clark College and worked for TNC Oregon prior to joining us in March 2013. It was hard to imagine any office being equal to the unique space enjoyed by NCLC staff, board members and volunteers at our Circle Creek Habitat Reserve south of Seaside. It’s hard to top bald eagle flyovers as you walk from car to office and routine coyote and elk sightings through the windows during meetings. Doug Green, President Tammi Lesh, Vice President Tom Horning, Secretary Ron Logan, Treasurer Betsy Ayres Kevin Brownlee Randall Henderson John Mersereau Vianne Patterson Lisa Phipps STAFF Welcome New Staff Members ... Katie Voelke, Executive Director Jon Wickersham, Associate Director Melissa Reich, Stewardship Director Amy Hutmacher, Conservation Assistant Teresa Retzlaff, Outreach Coordinator Allison Wilski, Administrative Assistant Conservation Connections In 2013 we welcomed three new properties to North Coast Land Conservancy protection In 2013, North Coast Land Conservancy had the honor of working with Stephen and Lizzie Murdock and their family to complete a conservation easement on the land they call Waterwood: 160 acres of second-growth forest, yearround creeks and dynamic forest ecosystem high above the Little Nestucca River near Neskowin in Lincoln County. NCLC staff and board members were deeply saddened to learn that Stephen Murdock passed away at the end of 2013 after a long illness. We are honored to be helping to keep his legacy and vision alive for generations to come. Waterwood The 45-acre Clear Lake property includes the last undeveloped interdunal lake on the Warrenton peninsula outside of Fort Stevens State Park and is at the heart of North Coast Land Conservancy’s Columbia Quiet Waters initiative. Now the lake and its surrounding dune ridges, emerging wetlands and forested uplands will remain undisturbed forever. Clear Lake We thank landowner Rod Gramson for being such a great partner to work with during the acquisition process and look forward to honoring his wish to see the property where he has watched wildlife thrive for 40 years remain in a natural state. NCLC worked for seven years to conserve this land, which includes both sides of nearly a half-mile of the Skipanon River where it flows through a forest of brooding Sitka spruce and native crabapple between Warrenton High School and US 101. Sitka spruce forest and swamp is a globally rare habitat; threequarters of the forested tidal wetlands that existed in the lower Columbia River Estuary in the late 1800s were gone by the 1980s. Wetlands such as those found in Skipanon Forest act as nature’s kidneys, filtering out sediments, excess nutrients, and pollutants. By storing water, they also protect natural and manmade environments by tempering the effects of storm surges and flooding. Skipanon Forest Columbia Quiet Waters Conservation Plan Is Completed A New Path: A new walking trail at Circle Creek Habitat Reserve took shape in the Spring of 2013, thanks to the hard work of the St. Helens-based Columbia River Youth Corps. Using a plan laid out by NCLC volunteers Neal Maine and Doug Ray under the guidance of Andy Rasmussen of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Youth Corps members built a path that takes you across a tumbling creek through a forest lush with native shrubs, trees of all ages, and remnant old-growth stumps that are serving as nurse logs to regenerate a rainforest. To help NCLC focus our land conservation efforts within the large and diverse area we serve, the land trust has developed six initiatives targeting key land types or habitats. Each initiative will have a unique conservation plan to guide future projects in that area, including a system for identifying areas of high priority for conservation. At the close of 2013, NCLC conservation and stewardship staff celebrated the completion of the first of these plans, focused on the unique interdunal wetlands and globally rare Sitka spruce forested swamps found in northern Clatsop County, within the Urban Growth Boundary of the City of Warrenton and wetlands around the lower Skipanon River and Tansy and Alder Creeks. Warrenton is an area of rapid population growth and land development, making it an area of particular interest for conservation. Our goals in this unique area are to conserve this rare ecosystem and to maintain and promote ecological connectivity in the landscape. You can review a copy of the Columbia Quiet Waters Conservation Plan at www.nclctrust.org/nclc-completes-conservation-plan. This first trail in a planned network of walking paths at Circle Creek has special meaning to a group of NCLC supporters. Patte Fenderson and Bob Svec and their friends and families made building the trail possible through donations made in memory of Patte’s son Matthew Guderian, who passed away in 2011. Matthew was a dynamic young man who loved nature and who found great joy outdoors on the Oregon Coast. The Circle Creek Trail is connecting people of all ages to the beauty and wonder to be found in an emerging coastal rainforest at the foot of Tillamook Head. Thank You to all the generous donors and dedicated volunteers who made this project possible. Circle Creek Trail Site Steward Program Grows a Community Conservation Assistant Amy Hutmacher with Meredith Condon at Crosel Creek near Astoria Site Stewards Penny and Jay Paulsen at Stanley Marsh near Seaside Retired soil scientist Art Limbird on the Clatsop Plains In 2013, our Site Steward Program grew to 14 participants. These volunteers agree to adopt one or more NCLC-owned properties and conduct the quarterly site visits required for NCLC to meet its land stewardship goals and obligations. Thirty out of the 42 properties we own are now monitored by the Site Steward Program. Site stewards take photographs at established points, note any changes to the landscape such as invasive plant incursions or other disturbances, and record the data NCLC needs to keep track of. From the newly restored floodplain of Circle Creek to the slow moving waters of John Day River Marsh near the Columbia River, volunteer leaders shared stories about the land and the wildlife that inhabits it. On the Land programs are more than just a walk in the woods. Together we’re building connections not only with the land but with one another. A Coastal Floodplain Reconnected Circle Creek Habitat Reserve Floodplain Restoration Project June 2013 The berm removal process begins The troublesome Necanicum River berm that hydrologists long believed was exacerbating winter flooding of Highway 101 at the south end of Seaside is now gone, thanks to a visionary project—led by North Coast Land Conservancy and undertaken on NCLC’s Circle Creek Habitat Reserve—that saw local cities, Clatsop County and the Oregon Department of Transportation working with NCLC to design and implement a solution that directed the water where it needed to go: the Necanicum River’s historic floodplain. When the first heavy rains of the season hit in late September of 2013, people all along the northern Oregon coast joined NCLC to cheer as the river waters reconnected with the floodplain for the first time in decades, leaving the highway open for safe passage. For more information about the project, visit nclctrust.org/a-river-runs-free-again. August 2013 Construction completed “It worked! It’s truly heartwarming to observe a huge project like this having desired results that are beneficial to people and wildlife alike.” Susan Glarum “Thank you for all that NCLC did to make this happen. It saved my business and it is so beautiful.” September 2013 The project passes its first high water test! Sharon Roper, owner Circle Creek Campground “Welcome home, River!” Lorna Smith Statement of Financial Activity 2013 Revenue Investments >1% Fire Insurance Proceeds 11% Contributions 10% Fairweather House and Garden: Where Art benefits Nature When Denise Fairweather, owner of Fairweather House and Garden in Seaside, began displaying photography by Neal Maine and Michael Wing— a partnership they call PacficLight Images—in August 2012, she had no idea how enthusiastic the response would be. “Sometimes when I open the shop in the morning, I find nose prints on the windows where people have stopped to peer in during the evening,” Denise observes. “The photographs are beautiful: bald eagles on the beach, elk in the estuary. But when people discover that they are all taken essentially within walking distance of the shop, they are amazed.” Denise soon moved the photographs to a permanent home at the front of her gallery. When, four months later, she read about the fire that destroyed the offices of North Coast Land Conservancy in Seaside, she was moved to help the land trust that Neal founded and that plays a key role in preserving a landscape that inspires many of the artists she represents. Fairweather now donates 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of PacificLight Images photographs to North Coast Land Conservancy—more than $4,000 in 2013 alone—an arrangement she plans to continue through 2014 and beyond. NCLC is grateful for Denise’s generosity. Be sure to stop by the gallery, at 612 Broadway in Seaside, to see the latest from PacificLight Images. Cards for a Good Cause Several stores on the North Coast are selling North Coast Land Conservancy’s notecards and postcards, all featuring wildlife photographed on the northern Oregon coast. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sales go to benefit NCLC.
