Marcia’s Message
Spring 2016
As we start 2016, I want to highlight some of the great things that you made possible for
OASIS in 2015. We welcomed 2,405 new members to OASIS in 2015, an increase of 23%.
We also had 300 new tutors join the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program, bringing the
total number of tutors in St. Louis to more than 2,500. If you are interested in volunteering,
please check out additional opportunities on page 35.
We are proud to announce a new partnership with Webster University and Eden Seminary.
We will begin offering programs on Eden’s campus in the beautiful S. D. Press Center
in February. See page 4 for details. This trimester’s Signature Series theme is Africa and
America: Culture and History. We hope you will take part in many of the new and exciting
programs offered, detailed on page 3.
This spring also will mark the distribution of our third biennial Participant Survey. Your
feedback is so important to us as we continuously seek to improve the quality of our
programs. We look forward to receiving your responses.
Lastly, I wanted to let you know about a new way to support OASIS, through our Sustainer
Club. By giving on our website, you have the option to make recurring gifts on a monthly or
quarterly basis. Gift set up is quick and easy, and can be done online at www.oasisnet.org/

Art History
Art as Social Activism
Sheila Bassoppo-Moyo
This program will look at how cultural forms like music, poetry and the visual arts are generated within social
movements and impact cultural and aesthetic practices.
The social movements highlighted will be the civil rights
movement of the 1960s, feminism and the Black Lives
Matter Movement. We will look at how music played a crucial role in the civil rights movement through the transmission of Negro spirituals into freedom songs during the civil
rights era. The emergence of a new, radical wave of the
women’s movement in the mid-1960s is reflected in the role
of poetry as a site of feminist consciousness-raising. The
Black Lives Matter Movement will be reflected through a
survey of art as social protest and a dialogue on race.

Two African-American Painters: Robert S.
Duncanson and Edward Mitchell Bannister
Betsy Solomon, MA
Two of the most distinguished American landscape painters of the 19th century, Robert S. Duncanson (1821-72)
and Edward Mitchell Bannister (1826/7-1901), were both
self-taught. Often inspired by literature, Duncanson was
described as the “best landscape painter in the west” during his time. Bannister painted luminous, atmospheric
landscapes that portray the supremacy of nature. Explore

great heights in painting and
sculpture. This four-session
series will feature a selection of Renaissance masters that
are often not fully-considered in art history survey classes.
Featured artists include: Giotto, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Andrea
Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Fra

Kota: Digital Expressions of African Art
Explore a powerful installation of nearly 50 Kota reliquary
guardian figures – unique wood-and-metal sculptures
created to protect the bones of deceased ancestors. The
exhibition examines a digital database created by Belgian
computer engineer and independent researcher Frederic
Cloth, whose combination of close-looking and datadriven analysis yielded unexpected conclusions and new
hypotheses about the hidden histories of Kota figures.
Co-curated by Cloth and Kristina Van Dyke, a specialist in
African art, Kota is the first exhibition to examine Cloth’s
search engine and system of algorithms, as well as the first
to focus exclusively on Kota reliquary guardians outside of
the broader context of African sculpture.

Survey some of the finest stories written in the past 20 years.
In our discussions, we will

come to define the contemporary short story. Although
there may not be a common aesthetic or a singular theme
that unites these works, these stories begin to suggest the
emotional and stylistic variety that the contemporary short

Dr. Christopher Parr, BA & MA from University of Canterbury, Ph.D. in Religion & Literature from Boston University, a member of the American Academy of Religion
Religions have by no means disappeared (as secularization
seemed to suggest, and many earnest atheists have forecast). Instead, numerous aspects of contemporary life are
profoundly affected by religious commitments, histories,
and conflicts. Dr Chris Parr will show that the model of
religions as “maps of reality” can enable interested citizens
as well as scholars – even those usually hostile to religion
– to make sense of people’s continuing religious commitments, and engage with them effectively. In this talk he
will relate this model to the visual arts, and current political disputes, before inviting the audience to participate in
discussion and questions that further test the model’s value
for understanding diverse religions.

residents of the St. Louis region. However, as these challenges are not unique to our region, the Commission looks
to serve as a role model and offer best practices to communities across the country. The Commission members have
the responsibility – and the opportunity – to hear from
people from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life, and
to form concrete recommendations for making this region
a stronger, fairer place for everyone. Join us for a special
session where OASIS members may learn more about the
commission and share their input.

Combating The Evolution of Antibiotic Resistant
Superbugs Across Diverse Habitats
Disease-causing bacteria are becoming increasingly
resistant to all available antibiotics, causing approximately
23,000 deaths and costing the U.S. $35 billion each year.
This scenario is predicted to worsen, with fewer and fewer
new drugs coming to market. Award winning Pathology
and Immunology Professor, Dr. Gautam Dantas, explores
the new DNA sequencing and computational technologies
that are enabling a deeper understanding of how antibiotic
resistance evolves and spreads in diverse bacteria, providing critical insights into prevention and diagnosis of future

The Conversation Project: Choosing Better Endings
For Your Life
Mary Fox, MD, Chief Medical Officer,
Visiting Nurse Association of Greater St. Louis
Everyone has a story. About losing someone close. About
not talking about wishes until it was too late. When it
comes to end-of-life care, one conversation can make all
the difference. It’s time to transform our culture so we
shift from not talking about dying to talking about it. It’s
time to share the way we want to live at the end of our
lives. It’s also time to communicate about the kind of care
we want and don’t want for ourselves. The Conversation
Project is a national program dedicated to helping people
talk about their wishes for end-of-life care.

National OASIS News
The OASIS Institute • Winter/Spring 2016
OASIS volunteers make a big impact across the country
with over 375,000 hours of service!
hat do this techie, tutor and avid gardener have in common? That’s easy.
W
They have time, talents and a desire to give back to their communities. And they have OASIS.
Jim Salih is a go-to guy for
questions about technology
with the OASIS Connections
“Ask a Techie” class. No
question is too small for Jim,
who volunteers to provide
one-on-one assistance for
older adults in need of
help with tablets, iPhones
and laptops. “To see the
amazement on someone’s
face as they see what they can
do with technology is really
something,” he says.
After one year as an OASIS
tutor, Flora Bryant says she’s
all in. Her efforts with a third
grader named Marquis resulted
in dramatic improvement in
his reading test scores. He’s a
thriving fourth grader now, and
Flora’s life has also changed.
“I’m more positive about my
purpose in the world,” she says.
Physical activity and healthy
eating have long been part of
Mary McFerson’s routine.
She practices yoga, walks
daily and gardens fruits and
vegetables year round. As
a CATCH Healthy Habits
volunteer, she’s sharing
what she does naturally with
children, and encourages
others to join in the fun.
“You’ll have the time of your
life interacting with young
people, and get back your
time and energy ten-fold!
