The Autumn Challenge was held October 20th and if you missed it you missed a beautiful day on the water
and a lot of fun. Hat’s off to the social committee who provided a great breakfast and dinner. And thanks
to Kim who provided a chase boat and to the John’s who provided the committee boat. Really appreciated.
And KUDOS to Fleet who ran a great regatta. Three races. Two Windward Leeward and one longer Triangle Race. The winds were everywhere from nothing to about twelve and with some very shifting wind
angles made some of the mark roundings quite interesting. Great racing some definite surprises and a great
day on the water.
The annual dinner is coming up on November 10th at Gunter’s Landing. This is always a great event that
includes the Change of Watch . Dick would like you to respond ASAP.

Included are some pictures of the boyscouts at the Lake on the 13th. This is always fun. Thanks to everybody who helped out and got the scouts out on the water.
Thanks also to Evelyn Shaw for the photos of the Great River Race. The turnout was pretty slim this year
and nobody did the twenty four hour event.
There is some news on the Weed Front and I’ll try and have it all compiled for the annual dinner. Speaking
of weeds I’ve been conducting a little survey. And so far I’ve found not a single person who has an exterior
strainer on their boat that has sucked up weeds. It seems all the boats that have full flow through hulls to the
internal strainer are sucking them up. Might be time to think about a strainer for the boat. Pictures of different kinds later in the Binnacle.
Finally. If you have any pictures from the year and would like to contribute them to a slide show for the Annual Dinner please send them to John Frost who needs them ASAP. Those with lots can put them on a disc
and send to John. If you send more than four or five please put them in a zip file.

On a different note several interesting things in the news. First of all Oracle’s huge catamaran pitchpoled in
San Francisco Bay but did not sink. It was retrieved after being swept out under the bridge but is damaged.
Although this is just opinion I don’t find the craze for Big Catamaran Sailing very interesting. I admire their
technical and construction details but they just don’t do much for me. Another interesting tidbit they reported
that a guided missile cruiser collided with a submarine off Florida. HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN! I assume one
or both of the captains is now looking for a new job.

From the Commodore
Well this is my last letter to you as my term is up next month. Looking back at the past two years, I see we
had some very good regattas, some tight local racing and, without a doubt, a great number of very successful
on-shore social functions. My only regrets are the small number of on-the-water social events and the small
number of cruises excepting the well supported annual Labor Day Weekends to Gooseponds Marina in
Scotsboro. Further, I note that the marina is now just about full and so there are many more nominal members whom we are looking forward to including in the Club’s activities next year. The facilities of the club
house, etc. are provided by the Owners at no cost to all boats in the marina. So I must thank the Owners and
their representative, our dock master Quill, for their support. I commend the next Board and appointed officers to build on our successes and concentrate on making our activities fun for all.
It was six years ago since I bought my downsized boat to the marina and joined the Lake Guntersville Sailing Club. I have seen the club grow and improve and I look forward to being an active participant in the
future years. My first race was as crew for one of the older members on his boat and we won the Autumn
Challenge outright. This year in the recent Autumn Challenge, Tony and I raced together again on his boat
and, despite a few equipment problems such as a jib sheet shackle catching on every possible line, a new
foresail that had to be wound-in by hand at the drum, an engine that took an average of 40 pulls and 10
minutes to start, and the inability to recruit a younger crew member to work the winches, we won the B
Fleet leaving the overall championship to one of the much younger members. We especially would like to
thank the Race Committee for recognizing our extended ages (combined 158 years) and putting us in the B
Fleet!!!
Finally, I note my last duty will be to conduct an election at the Annual Meeting and Change-of-Watch Dinner on November 10 for next year’s Commodore and Treasurer (the three other elected members still have
one more year to complete their two year terms) and to say a few words of gratitude to all those who contributed to making my job so easy. So I would personally like to see you all at the Annual Dinner on Saturday, November 10 at Gunter’s Landing where we can reminisce about the past year. To that end, I would
welcome you letting me know that you will be attending and reserving your place by e-mail at dickpotter@
bellsouth.net and by sending your check for $25. per person to me at 129 Wilder Dr., Harvest, AL 35749. I
do need the numbers as-soon-as-possible as I have to give Gunter’s Landing five-day’s notice so they can
plan and purchase food.
So now I say “au revoir” to since I am not going away just relinquishing my responsibilities.

Just a few reminders for our November social events:
Thank you to everyone who helped to make this year’s Autumn Challenge a wonderful
success! The racing was some of the very best we’ve ever had and nearly 50 folks shared
food and fun at the Italian dinner and awards presentation after the race.
A very special thank you to my co-chair, Diane Seals, for all of the delicious, home-cooked
quiches, muffins, and breakfast casseroles that she provided for our “continental” breakfast!
Everything was wonderful, as always!
Also, special thanks to the women who volunteered to reheat the food and do last minute
food preparations so that I could sail in the race. Beth, Sylvia, and Kathy, your assistance
was truly appreciated!
And finally, thank you social committee members, for always stepping up and helping
with anything I need, especially cleanup! Again, Diane, Sylvia, Beth, Bev, Kathy, and
Mary worked hard to clear, clean and restore our clubhouse. And thanks to anyone who
lends a helping hand whenever needed!
We will celebrate our annual dinner on Saturday, November 10th at Gunter’s
Landing at 6pm. The cost of the meal is $25 per person and includes a
wonderful buffet with a selection of meats, vegetables, salad, bread and
desserts. Live entertainment will be provided and a cash bar is available.
We will elect officers for vacating positions and reflect,sometimes humorously,
on our adventures and accomplishments on the lake this year. Please plan to
join us for the food and fun! To reserve your dinner(s), email the number

as soon as possible so that we will have an accurate count of the number

LGSC clubhouse. Social hour begins at 5pm. The club will provide a ham and

share. I will also hold the first social committee meeting of the new year at 3pm
that day. PLEASE come and join us if you are able and willing to participate

BOY SCOUT TROOP FROM ALBERTVILLE
Saturday, October 13th we took the boyscouts out and
had a little race from Siebold to Short Creek, to Buck
Island back to the start line. Winds were from nothing
to about ten. My scout, Cameron, steered the entire
race. He quickly figured out up and down and we communicated very well. Had a little trouble letting the boat
drift to windward in the light air. But He hung with it
and sailed the whole day except as you can see coming
into the marina under power. Great picture of one of the

Autumn Challenge Results
Only eleven boats took part in the Autumn Challenge on a beautiful day. Something for everybody. Wind,
no wind, big shifts, and a well run regatta. Sorry but nobody sent me any pictures.

RAW WATER INTAKE STRAINERS
Through Hull with exterior Strainer. They are made
by Perko, Buck Algonquin, Groco and Seadog. They
do require four bolts to seal them to the boat. You
just replace your old through hull and put your seacock back on it. (YOU DO HAVE A SEACOCK
DON’T YOU?) . If not put one on when you have the
boat out of the water. Prices vary from about $35 and
up depending on the size and type.
Round External strainer bolts or screws to hull. These
are pretty common on powerboats. Made by Perko,
Groco, Buck Algonquin, and other manufactuers.
Prices vary from about $12 and up depending on the
size.
Scoop type strainer. Causes slightly more water flow
than the round strainers. They are made by all the
same manufacturers. The Perko makes one which is
slotted and allows you to take it off by backing off the
fastners which allows you to clean it out. Prices for
the scoop types vary from about $19 to $30.
This is the Buck Algonquin version of the Perko and
Groco. It does not require bolts or screws but it also
doesn’t conform to a hull curve very well. Also note
that unlike the Groco it has no bonding screw. Prices
vary from about $39 up depending on size.
