“Let Your Freak Flag Fly”
Shrek the Musical
INTRODUCTION. In Shrek the Musical, the Fairy Tale Creatures are
banished by Lord Farquaad to the swamp because he considers them
freaks. They later proudly sing “Let Your Freak Flag Fly.” In many stories,
characters must overcome their feelings of self-doubt or negative thoughts to reach their goals.
The type of struggle (or conflict) they face is described as “man vs himself.” How does the
character feel at the beginning of the story? How does he feel at the end? What caused
him/her to change during the story?
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY. Select one of the characters in Shrek the Musical. Draw a
flag to show how he feels at the beginning. Then draw one to show how he feels at the end.
Write a sentence or two telling what caused the change.
What caused the change? ________________________________________________________

Daytime and Nighttime Creatures
Shrek the Musical
INTRODUCTION. Mythology and fantasy literature often have
characters such as ogres and shape-shifters. In Shrek the Musical, Fiona
transforms from a beautiful lady into a hideous ogress at sundown.
There is a scientific term called “lunar effect” that refers to the belief
that the cycle of the moon affects animal behavior. Some animals are
nocturnal, meaning they come out at night when it is dark. Other
animals are diurnal, meaning they come out during the day when it is light. Those
natural habits of animals might be the source for the idea of fairy tale characters that change
their form at night.

Home Sweet Home
Shrek the Musical
INTRODUCTION. All animals need a place to rest and feel safe. The scientific
name for their homes is habitat. When Shrek was seven years old, he chose a
swamp as his habitat. A few years later, however, his home was overrun by
Fairy Tale Creatures who had been forced into the swamp after Lord Farquaad
declared that they were freaks. Unhappy with their fate, these story book
characters longed for their more natural settings. Which habitats would you consider better
homes for them? Answers might include forests, deserts, ice tundras, grasslands, farms, trees,
ponds, houses, soil, oceans, etc.
SCIENCE CLASSROOM ACTIVITY. Select two fairy tale characters banished to the swamp. Draw
a picture of a natural habitat where you think each would have been more comfortable. List
reasons you chose that environment for them.

Your SHREK-selves
Shrek the Musical
INTRODUCTION. Characters in stories like Shrek the Musical are purely imaginary, but they
appeal to us because they reflect real human traits and relationships. You are not an ogre, but
face it, you probably have your moments. Sometimes you feel like a true prince or princess. And
sometimes – be honest! – you behave like a … donkey. So…
SOCIAL STUDIES ACTIVITY. Draw your Ogre- or Ogress-self, your Prince- or Princess-self, and
your Donkey-self. What is something you might say when you are in that particular mode?

Ugly Ever After
Shrek the Musical
INTRODUCTION. The traditional plot of a fairy tale runs from “Once upon a time…” to “…And
they lived happily ever after.” The basic parts of the plot line are (1) exposition, (2) inciting
incident, (3) rising action, (4) climax, (5) falling action, and (6) denouement or resolution.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY. Below is a plot summary of Shrek the Musical. Using that
information, complete the plot diagram on the next page.
Summary
SHREK is a grumpy, smelly, and ugly ogre, living peacefully in a swamp. One night, he
suddenly finds his land has been inhabited by a mass of fairy-tale creatures (Pinocchio,
the three little pigs, Peter Pan, Snow White, Cinderella, among others), who have
been banished by the evil Lord Farquaad. One of these is Donkey (who just won’t shut
up). Accompanied by him, Shrek confronts Lord Farquaad, demanding his land back.
Farquaad gives him a deal, telling him to rescue Princess Fiona from a castle guarded
by a dragon to get his swamp back.
Shrek and Donkey rescue the Princess, narrowly avoiding being burned by Dragon,
who tries to win the heart of the Donkey. Fiona is disgruntled about being rescued by
an ugly ogre, rather than Prince Charming. However, despite their differences, she and
Shrek grow fond of each other. On the second night of their return journey, Fiona
hides in a windmill. Donkey finds her, and discovers that she’s turned into an ogress.
She explains that she’s under a spell, which can only be broken by true love’s first kiss.
Shrek overhears part of this, but misunderstands and thinks she doesn’t love him
because he is ugly.
Just as she decides to tell Shrek the truth, the sun rises and she becomes a beautiful
princess again. Lord Farquaad arrives and takes Fiona to his castle, and Shrek returns
to his swamp. Both are miserable.
Later, Shrek, Donkey and Dragon head to Farquaad’s castle, to stop Fiona from
marrying him. When they arrive, the sun sets and Fiona becomes an ogress again.
Farquaad doesn’t want to marry her, and sets the guards on everybody, but Dragon
comes to the rescue and eats Farquaad. Shrek and Fiona kiss. Therefore, Fiona stays
ugly (as predicted by the spell that had been placed on her “you find true love’s first
kiss and then take love’s true form”). Fiona will forever be an ugly ogre like Shrek. She
marries Shrek in a big wedding with all the Fairy Tale Creatures, and they live “ugly”
ever after.
