Yyteri, the pearl of Pori, is a genuinely
memorable and unique travel
destination. The 6-kilometre long
sandy beach, one of the most beautiful
ones in Finland, is a summer paradise
for the whole family.
There’s plenty of sand in Yyteri and
creativity knows no bounds
Yyteri is an experience for adults and an
adventure for children. Six kilometres of
toe-sinking soft sand for sunbathing, and
water as far as the eye can see. The necessary
goal posts and nets for beach football and
beach volley are set up on the beach. Right
by the beach, there is an amazingly long water
slide and a world-class giant trampoline, Super
Jumper.
Have an easy-going holiday relaxing on the
beach, refreshing on terraces and enjoying

Finland's best surfing landscape
Yyteri is one of the most popular surfing areas in

Fun things to do for active holidaymakers
Located by the beach, Yyteri's 18-hole golf course
offers a unique landscape for golf enthusiasts. The
Yyteri golf course has been constructed with the
natural terrain in mind and several water hazards and
beach dunes create a diverse landscape for playing.
Thanks to its sandy terrain, the golf season in Yyteri is
long, usually from April long into the autumn.
The coast of the Yyteri area, together with
Kokemäenjoki River, offers a fantastic framework
for boating and fishing. Feel the joy of exercise in the
stunning and unique maritime environment!
Yyteri is ideal for enjoying activities throughout the year.
After the autumn arrives, nature trails invite you to
explore the wonders of nature. Here and there you can
find observation towers for watching birds and other
animals. Unique sand dunes form a delightful place for
sleighing in the winter. Hike together with your whole

Yyteri is a dream destination for
anyone who feels at home in nature.
There are tens of kilometres of nature
and excursion trails as well as plenty
of observation towers and decks in and
around Yyteri and the Bothnian Sea
National Park.
The beautiful and varied terrain of Yyteri
provides a location for unforgettable
outdoor and excursion experiences
through all seasons.
Waders and waterfowl gather by the sludges. The
area is one of Finland's most important feeding
and resting places during migration.

The huge dune areas, meadows and sludges
known for their birds and the Bothnian Sea
National Park offer unique views for nature
enthusiasts.
The distinctive nature can be explored during
excursions and on nature trails that expand altogether over 30 kilometres. Yyteri's nature and
excursion trails are located in and around
the famous beach and the Bothnian Sea
National Park. Individual excursions on the forest
paths in the Yyteri area are sure to be successful.

Yyteri sludges – rare birds
and duckboards
The area, known for its diverse avifauna, is a
dream destination for twitchers and one of
Finland's best locations to observe waders, for
example. Twitchers and other nature enthusiasts
will rejoice in the 15 observation towers that
may be used free of charge throughout the year.
Routes are signposted and the sludge area is
crossed by duckboards.
The routes along the Bothnian Sea are perfect
for observing sand dunes, meadows and sludges,
grassy areas as well as forests by the shores, to
name some of the areas favoured by birds.

The sea and the
archipelago
extend an invitation
The maritime pearls of Pori are
fantastic destinations for drivers
and boaters. Yyteri, Mäntyluoto,
Reposaari and Ahlainen are connected
not only by a road around the archipelago but also by the sea, whose
characteristics range from storms to
pleasant little waves.
In Mäntyluoto, you can experience brisk
surfing weather, amazing autumn storms and
a dash of sailor romance. The causeway leads
you to the beautiful Kallo lighthouse island.
The Pori Coast Guard and pilot station, among others,
operate in Kallo. Kallo's port lighthouse and rocky
shores are popular excursion destinations. The island's
sailing club is the oldest in our country.
Reposaari – rocks and idyllic wooden houses
The many faces of wooden houses, the Norwegian
style fell church and Finland's largest fishing harbour
with its trawlers make the maritime Reposaari a very
picturesque island. Here, you can enjoy delicious
seafood and admire the sea on a breakwater.
The rocky shores with surging waves in Siikaranta
entice you to go on excursions. The carvings on the
rocks were made by the numerous visitors over the
years. The idyllic island is accessible by buses, cars
and boats.

Ahlainen, the northernmost part of Pori, bathes in
the waves of the Bothnian Sea and charms visitors
with its beautiful archipelago sceneries and the
genuine village lane with its wooden houses and
sheds on the shores.
Pori's oldest church, a wooden church completed in
1796, is also located in the cultural-historical environment of Ahlainen. Ahlainen provides a fantastic
framework for hikes, canoeing and cycling trips as
well as fishing.

boat harbours in the city centre during the summer,
providing an anchoring spot for visitors to the city.

Kokemäenjoki River, as well as the
vast, open scenery in the Bothnian Sea
National Park's outer archipelago are

Created by land uplift, the constantly changing
nature of the archipelago is best explored at the
Bothnian Sea National Park. In the Pori area, the
national park extends from Luvia to Merikarvia
and is mainly located in the outer archipelago.
The surface area is 98 % water, with magnificent
open views.
An excursion of a day or two is plenty of time
to head toward the lovely lighthouse islands or
the outer archipelago. Sea buckthorn bushes
and flowing meadows have made their homes
on the shores of the ruggedly beautiful and
stony outer islands. The area boasts several
excursion harbours for visits, such as Munakari,
Säppi, Iso­-Enskeri and Seliskeri. The islands also
provide locations for resting and campfires.

Travel back in time on the Säppi lighthouse island,
whose lighthouse was built at the end of the 19th
century. The lush thickets growing on the diabase
bedrock on the island of Säppi belong to a national
grove conservation program, forming a part of the
valuable heritage landscape.

The delta of the Kokemäenjoki River
The delta of the Kokemäenjoki River is the largest
delta in the Nordic countries. The landscape
around the delta consists of oblong islets,
separated from each other by narrow gaps. In
terms of avifauna, the most valuable areas of the
delta are located approximately ten kilometres
from the city centre, by the estuary. There are
over 100 nesting bird species, with an annual
average of approximately 220 bird species in
the delta area.
The delta of the Kokemäenjoki River is the favoured
location of over 100 bird species.

Pori Organ
June 13-19
The international Pori Organ concert event,
focusing on organ music, will be organised
already for the 11th time in Pori.
The main venue of this event is Central Pori
Church, with its 58-stop Paschen Kiel organ.
The festival's foreign guests are artists from
France and Germany and include, among others,
organist Pierre Pincemaille of the Church of
Saint Denis and organist Sophie-Véronique
Cauchefer-Choplin of the Church of SaintSulpice. The concert is organised in collaboration with Pori Big Band, conductor and
saxophonist Reiko Brockelt, and organist
David Timm from Germany.

Pori Jazz is the pioneer of Finnish festival
summers and an absolute must for summer
people. Pori Jazz Kids Festival 2016 is enjoyed
by everyone from babies to the elderly.
This year, Pori Jazz festival marks the 51st
celebration of the event on July 9-17. As usual,
the festival offers a varied and high-quality
program that combines the stars of today and
the hardy perennials of rhythmic music. Pori
Jazz takes place in a unique milieu: The shores
of Kokemäenjoki River and the lush park area of
Kirjurinluoto give the festival the framework it
deserves. In the summer of 2015, the total
number of festival visitors reached 390,000,
of which 61,000 attended fee-based events.
The whole family's free event, Pori Jazz Kids, will
take place July 11-13. The most important mission
of the Kids Festival is to offer children and youth
an opportunity to play music together and to
take their first steps with new instruments.

Porispere, August 5-7

SuomiAreena
July 11-15
Porispere will be organised for the sixth time next
summer. The event, created utilising the famous
craziness and mutiny spirit of Pori, has grown from
a local village celebration to a nationally significant
event. The festival offers a cosy environment and a
versatile package of Finnish and international artists
from heavy rock to family favourites. Porispere
has received several local awards, for example for
improving the quality of the city and exceptionally
significant activities for the good of the city. The
2016 program is already confirmed and published
for Sunday, August 7, which brings to the stage
two of the currently most popular Finnish artists:
Cheek and Antti Tuisku. The rest of the program
will be published in the beginning of the year.

The highlight of the summer, SuomiAreena, offers
over 150 events: mainly Finnish work and civic organisation activities, for example, a pop-up employee
agency, political party days, open doors at e.g. the
port and the airport, children's olympics, etc. For the
first time, all discussions are centred on the main
stages and there will be enough space at the arenas.
The market place will be taken over by the MTV
stage and over 50 tents, adding life to the city for the
whole week. Discussions about work, security policies,
health, and even robots! All this and a lot of new trends
are included in Finland's largest societal discussion
event. Welcome to SuomiAreena! Discussions are held
mainly in Finnish. All events are free of charge.

Kirjurinluoto is a large, lush and
popular recreational area with plenty
to do for the whole day.
Kirjurinluoto, aka Kirvatsi has always been
a popular location for summer frolicking,
offering plenty to do for people of all ages.
Fun and versatile Pelle Hermanni Park boasts
a breathtaking number of different play areas,
climbing frames and slides suitable for various
ages and also a children's traffic park. According to an internet poll by the national YLE
News, Pelle Hermanni is the best admission
free play park in Finland. The play park area is
approximately three hectares in size, equivalent to almost five football fields. Older kids
may enjoy the disc golf course, beach
and interesting nature walks.

Kirjurinluoto's very own mascot, Viksu Mustavaris,

area. Alpacas, baby goats, hens, roosters,
ducks, peacocks and many others delight both

Traffic Park Vinkkari provides
safe traffic experiences
The lush and vast park area is a splendid place
for enjoying a picnic and the sun - even for the
whole day. The sandy beach entices the little
water monsters of the family to splash and
build sand castles.
The children's traffic park's signs and traffic lights
are scaled to the level of children. The purpose is
to provide children with illustrative and safe
experiences about traffic, as well as create an

Garden Information Centre, located in the area,
provides advice on gardening. Located in conjunction with the centre, the 9-hectare Hanhipuisto
is an exhibition park for trees, bushes and flowers
that thrive in Satakunta. There, you can admire the
wonderful stone garden, art garden, peony garden
and the square of roses. From Hanhipuisto, you can
take the bridge or a ferry to Polsanluoto, whose
nature trail showcases natural plants.

In the summer of 2016, Kirjurinluoto Summer

Juselius mausoleum
The Juselius mausoleum is one of Pori's most wellknown sights. Mining counsellor F.A. Jusélius had
it built as the last resting place for his daughter
Sigrid who died at the age of 11. Originally, the
mausoleum was adorned by frescos by Akseli
Gallen-Kallela, but they were later destroyed.
The current frescos were created by artist Jorma
Gallen-Kallela as per his father's sketches. Open

Rosenlew Museum
Rosenlew Museum, which is a part of Satakunta
Museum, is located in Pori's Aittaluoto, by the
traditional factory area. The museum building is
a former granary, the crown's grain storage, built
in the 1860s. Rosenlew Museum records and

exhibition presents the history and production
of the Rosenlew company (1853–1987) that
operated in several industries. Temporary
exhibitions expand the viewpoint to other

Centre Toivo
At the south side of Korsman's House, there is a
dwelling consisting of two rooms and a kitchen
and decorated to portray the home of a fictional
family with two children, the Korsmans, in 1951.
At Korsman's House, all items can be touched and
explored. Korsman's House has been designed to
provide atmospheric time travel to peek at a Pori
childhood home of modern-day children's grandparents.

Pori's Neo-Renaissance theatre building is the oldest
Finnish professional theatre. In 2016, we will see the
premiere of the extremely funny Me Rosvolat, based

Central Pori Church Pori's Orthodox Church
The largest church in Pori is located in the
core of the City of Pori, on the shore of
Kokemäenjoki River. The Neo-Gothic church
was constructed in 1859–1863. The building
is known, among other things, for its 72-metre tall tower and Magnus Enckell's stained
glass. On the outside, the church represents
the Neo-Gothic style but on the inside, the
church follows the late 19th century National
Romantic style.
Pori's Orthodox Church is located in the Käppärä area
of the city. The highlights of the church include its
outer architecture as well as the iconostasis indoors.
On days when the church is open, the eight bells of
the church toll, followed by a short prayer service,
at 1.00pm - 1.10pm. Liturgy takes place 2nd Sunday
of the month, and vigils and liturgy take place 4th
weekend of the month.
Church of Ahlainen
Church of Reposaari
The oldest church in Pori, the beautiful wooden
church of Ahlainen, was completed in 1796. At
a later time, the church was expanded into the
shape of a cross. The church owns several items
from the 17th century and the altar piece,
"Jesus Blesses Children" was painted by Elin
Danielsson­Gambogi.
Reposaari's fell church in the Norwegian style has
a hexagonal shape and its bell tower is octagonal.
The church is a popular sight on the maritime island.
Service takes place on Sundays at 12pm.

The beautiful stone church of Noormarkku
was completed in 1933 and it is located by the
busy Pori-Jyväskylä road, in the corner of Vanha
Vaasantie and Kirkkotie.
The Church of Lavia was completed in 1823. It is a
church in the shape of a cross with a straight stem
and also includes a gable tower. On the church yard
rests the Great Famine (1867–1868) memorial.

Noormarkku ironworks
Explore the history
of the
ironworks
The Noormarkku ironworks area
in Pori is still perfect for grasping
a sense of the area's traditional
atmosphere. The area's historical
buildings are still in use,
serving visitors.
Noormarkku ironworks was established in
1806. The Ahlström family gained ownership of the ironworks in 1870, after which
the prime time of the ironworks began. For
example, houses for three generations were
built in the area: Isotalo, Havulinna and the
world renowned Villa Mairea, designed by
architect Alvar Aalto.
Today, the exceptionally large ironworks area
is a valuable entity both architecturally and
cultural historically. Nowadays, there are comfortable accommodation options in the area's
recently renovated buildings. Alternatively,
you can host meetings, parties or
receptions in stylish premises.

Ahlström Voyage
The unique Saw Museum
The extensive Ahlström Voyage exhibition sheds light
on both Ahlström's history as well as the modern days
of the Ahlström Group. The exhibition focuses on the
architecture of the Noormarkku ironworks area, the
construction of the ironworks to what we see today,
the sources of livelihood and the residents.
The saw in Makkarakoski sounded for the last time
in February 1956. The original equipment, dating
from the 19th century, was left as is. For this reason, the saw contains a piece of industrial history
that has been untouched for nearly 60 years.
There is also a small museum shop in the old
workshop. The history of the ironworks can also
be explored during guided walking tours.
The building with the saw was renovated in 2014
to serve as a museum and the all the saw-related
objects and some of the equipment have been
preserved. The saw area is also the location of an
exhibition that demonstrates the sawing process
and the refining of timber.
Such saw museums apparently do not exist elsewhere in Europe. The historic saw museum is open
to groups by reservation.
