It is the oldest continuous secular office under the Crown. Originally, the Office held many of the powers now vested in H. M. The Office of High Sheriff remained first in precedence until 1908 when and Order in Council gave the office Lord Lieutenant primacy as the Sovereign’s personal representative. The High Sheriff is the Sovereign’s representative in the County for all matters relating to the Judiciary and the maintenance of law and order and is apolitical. The High Sheriff takes up his or her appointment of one year following a sworn declaration, in terms dictated by the Sheriff’s Act 1887, before the presiding Judge of the Circuit. The High Sheriff of Somerset’s appointment takes place in Wells Cathedral every year in the month of March. Jamie Cullum Like the exploding piano on its cover, Jamie Cullum's long-awaited new Verve album The Pursuit blows away audience and artist preconceptions leaving 14 smoldering tracks that seamlessly run the gamut from swinging standards and yearning singersongwriter confessionals to 125 BPM house dance tracks and resurrected Broadway ballads. "It was the right time for me to take myself out of my comfort zone, and to push myself to be bolder,” Cullum says of the album “I wanted to build on the things I've already done, but I also wanted to reinvent myself.” The Pursuit - the English singer/songwriter/pianist/multi-instrumentalist's third Verve album, and his first in four years - is an expansive labor of love that embraces the full range of the artist's diverse talents and far-flung musical passions. While it covers more stylistic ground than anything he's done previously, The Pursuit's unifying threads are the same musical fluency, emotional commitment and lyrical wit that helped to make Cullum's prior releases Twentysomething and Catching Tales international crossover smashes selling more than 4 million combined copies worldwide. “I like that this album journeys from a big-band track at the start to a proggy house/dance track at the end, because it's all me” Jamie notes. “But if the only thing that people notice is that this album is stylistically all over the place, then I will feel I have failed in some way.” Photo courtesy of Keith Joyner Studios Silver Ring Choir The Silver Ring Choir of Bath was founded in 1951 at Bathampton Methodist Chapel, as founder Conductor, Kelvin Thomas MBE lived nearby. In those early days Choir members were recruited as he went around the village knocking on doors persuading singers to join a new Choir he had formed. From it’s earliest days the Choir has continued to grow. This has certainly been the story of The Silver Ring Choir of Bath. Under Kelvin’s inspirational leadership the reputation of the Choir spread and continues to widen to this day. Kelvin Thomas was awarded the MBE for his services to music. The Choir’s traditional values are based on its heritage. It continues to focus on its charitable purpose: the welcoming and encouragement of new singers to mixed voice singing for the benefit of the wider community. Additionally, as a registered charity, thousands of pounds have been raised over the years for good causes. The Choir has entertained audiences with its diverse and innovative programmes. Its wide repertoire embraces music from around the world, including songs from stage and screen, sacred works, spirituals and operatic choruses. As well as travelling in all parts of the UK and Ireland, the Choir has also toured in Germany, Hungary, France, Denmark, Holland, Sweden, Finland, Canada, USA, Singapore and New Zealand. Somerset Crimebeat What's it all about? Somerset Crimebeat is an exciting scheme launched back in 1998 whose aim is to give young people up to the age of 25 an opportunity to help combat crime and the causes of crime in the community. It is led by the current High Sheriff of Somerset and successive High Sheriffs have also pledged their support providing valuable continuity throughout the years. What are Crimebeat’s objectives? • To promote a safer and improved quality of life through the prevention of crime • To provide young people with the opportunity to use their energy and imagination to develop crime prevention initiatives • To advance education amongst young people about the cause and effect of crime, as well as the dangers of alcohol, drug and solvent abuse What kind of projects are awarded a grant of up to £1,000? To be eligible for a grant, your project should: • • • • • • Allow young people to tackle the problems of their community themselves Have sufficient adult and professional support Concentrate on issues of crime prevention and community safety Promote young people as valued members of a community which they are taking a positive role in Include as many sections of the community as possible Empower young people with confidence and a sense of achievement Grants are available to groups who want to be part of the solution rather than the problem. Crimebeat ensures that such groups are responsibly led and that the projects are suitably supervised and coordinated. Somerset Crimebeat is supported by Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Local Authority Youth and Community Services and The Probation Service. Registered Charity No. 1071107 Forever Friends Appeal The Forever Friends Appeal raises funds for state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities, over and above that provided by the NHS. We work with the Wards and Departments of the Royal United Hospital to fundraise for major Campaigns and large or small equipment needs. Previous appeals raised money for a new CT scanner, and the recent Space to Grow appeal has recently built a new neo natal unit at the hospital. The appeal could not do this without the thousands of supporters who raise funds though fundraising, taking part in events, making donations, or simply donating their time and volunteering. The Royal United Hospital (RUH) is the acute district general hospital for Bath and surrounding towns and villages in Somerset and West Wiltshire. Each year the dedicated staff at the RUH treat and care for 30,000 in-patients and day cases, 53,000 accident and emergency patients, plus 249,000 out-patients. Patients receive from the NHS the best medical care that money can buy, but the NHS funding cannot meet these ever-increasing costs for advanced equipment, and that’s where the hospital’s charity, The Forever Friends Appeal, steps in.
