Ward Learning Today …. Leading Tomorrow ››› This past year, LSCC embarked on new projects and programs to enrich the lives of our students and the community. Through collective efforts, LSCC is renewed every day. Visible signs of our investment in Lawson State are evident on our campuses. We have made it a priority to support Lawson State in continuing to maintain academic excellence for our students. We received the esteemed honor of being ranked #5 in the top Community Colleges by the Washington Monthly Magazine for 2013 from over 700 colleges that were reviewed. This recognition simply acknowledges Lawson State Community College as a strong portal for academic achievement—LSCC a 21st century educational gateway. With increasing enrollment, new and exciting programs and offerings, highly qualified and inspiring faculty and staff, and numerous capital construction projects in progress and more on the way, LSCC is definitely on the move! It is our goal to continue to improve student success and create opportunities which will strengthen their individual career accomplishments. We look to the future—the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead—and how Lawson State can enhance its hallmark of exemplary teaching and learning in a collegiate environment second to none. I hope you’ll explore our 2013 Annual Report and stay tuned in the future. Warmest Regards, Dr. Perry W. Ward A MESSAGE FROM OUR ‹‹‹ ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Carlton Rice Greetings, My name is Carlton Rice, I am the Interim Director of Athletics at Lawson State Community College. On behalf of our coaches, staff and student-athletes, I want to thank you for supporting LSCC Cougar Athletics. We value our fans and supporters as members of our own community, and strive to make your association with our department a proud one. Rest assured that we know how important you are to our mission, not only as an athletic department, but as an institution as well. I am in my 4th year as an Athletic Director overall; my first at Lawson. The previous three years I spent time in Charleston, SC at Burke High School. I’m from Huntsville, AL. I received my bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Mississippi State University in 2006. While on football scholarship, I played three years as a Linebacker for the Bulldogs. I completed my final year of intercollegiate football at Alabama A&M University in 2007, where I earned my Master’s Degree in Physical Education in 2009. Our coaches, players and staff stand behind our mission of creating productive citizens through athletic experiences. We realize that winning is important, but this is not the only reason for our existence. We as coaches view our jobs as a teaching opportunity, not only for sports, but for the game of life that will continue long after graduation. It is always our goal to develop men and women into the best people they can be, both as students in the classroom and as athletes competing for national championships on the field. Again, we thank you for your continued support of Lawson State Athletics. If there is ever anything I can do to enhance your experience with our teams, or if you desire to become a financial partner in our quest to become an elite member of the NJCAA, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, 2 Carlton A. The career/technical division was first established as a result of the Wallace-Patterson Trade School Act of 1947. This Act established Wenonah Vocational and Trade School on August 24, 1949. The school opened with eleven instructors and seventy-five students enrolled in ten courses and one related subject. The first president of the school was Dr. Theodore A. Lawson. The initial funding received by the technical division was $75,000. The academic division began as Wenonah State Junior College, which was founded under Act No. 93 of the May 3, 1963 Legislature. The College was created in 1965 and was named after its first president in 1969. In 1967, Wenonah State Junior College held its first commencement exercise with 33 graduates. In 1968, another milestone was accomplished when the college received its accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1969, there were 300 students enrolled at Lawson State Junior College. On October 1, 1973, Wenonah State Technical Institute and Wenonah State Junior College merged and became one institution known as Lawson State Community College. With it’s long-standing history, there has been a short list of presidents, Dr. Theodore A. Lawson, 1949-1971; Dr. Leon Kennedy, 1971-1978; Dr. Jesse J. Lewis, 1978-1987; and Dr. Perry W. Ward, 1987 through the present time. Bessemer State Technical College was created under legislative Act No. 93 of the 1963 Alabama legislature. The City of Bessemer purchased 34 acres for the college site. Bessemer State accepted its first students on April 4, 1966, with six programs of study, 47 daytime students and 30 night students. The college was initially known as the State Vocational-Technical School but the first official name was the John R. 2015 LAWSON STATE BASEBALL Pelham Technical Trade School. The name was changed later to Bessemer State Trade School. On August 16, 1966, the name was again changed by legislative act to Bessemer State Technical Institute; the college status and name were achieved in 1973. Five presidents served Bessemer State Technical College: Otto B. Smith, 1964-1967; S. C. Porch, 1967-1971; Euel Snider, 1971-1972; Charles L. Payne, 1972-1984; and Mike Bailey, 1984-2004. ‹‹‹ As of July 1, 2005, Bessemer State Technical College merged with Lawson State Community College. Under the merged college, Lawson State has seen its most celebrated years. In 2011, Lawson State was featured as a Top 50 Community College, making history in the state. And, in 2013, it moved from 33 out of 50 on the list (of top colleges) to #5. Lawson State has also been recognized by the White House (and celebrated by the Obama Administration) as a Champion of Change. History of Baseball Program Baseball became an official sport at Lawson State in 1974. Players came mainly from the surrounding Jefferson County area, and as far away as Florida and Jamaica. Practices were usually held on the college campus and at the Fair Park Arena. Local games were played at locations in Fairfield, North Birmingham and at the historic Rickwood Baseball Field. There were three divisions and Lawson State was a part of the Northern Division. that also included Bevill State, Gadsden State, Southern Union, Snead State, Shelton State and Walker. Though competing at a high level and twice making the playoffs, the baseball program was eliminated in 1980 due to budget constraints. In the following years, the interest continued in the sport of baseball at Lawson State. After years of planning and preparation, baseball returned to the sports line-up in the 2005-2006 academic year featuring a brand new baseball complex. Lawson State baseball has been thriving and making headlines ever since. 5 COUGAR BASEBALL ››› HEAD COACH & CAREER RECORDS HEAD COACH DOUG KOVASH Second year head coach, Doug Kovash brings 27 years of college coaching and major league baseball scouting experience to the Lawson State baseball program. He joined the Cougar baseball program after serving as Development Director and Housing Coordinator from 2009-present for a local non-profit homeless ministry, The Firehouse Shelter. He also scouted for three years as an associate scout for the San Diego Padres from 2010-2012. Kovash owns a 17 year career head coaching record of 435-405-2 with the majority of his wins coming as the skipper at Presbyterian College (PC), where he compiled a record of 320284-2 in 11 seasons from 1994-2004. In his first season at Lawson State in 2014, the squad recorded 20 wins and saw two players advance to play Division I baseball and two more accept scholarships to play at prestigious Division II/NAIA programs. The 22 man squad also earned a 3.43 Team GPA for the year and every single player in the spring made the Dean’s List. Kovash began his head coaching career at Susquehanna University at the age of 24; becoming the youngest NCAA head coach in the country in 1989. He left the Crusaders in 1990 to start the Emory University baseball program. Both programs at Susquehanna and Emory were nationally ranked within two years. In 1993, Kovash transitioned the PC baseball team from the NAIA ranks to NCAA Division II ranks. Teams under Kovash's tutelage at PC produced 42 All-South Atlantic Conference team members, 22 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region selections, four ABCA All-America picks and 10 professional players. In addition, he had 45 players named to the SAC Academic Honor Roll while leading the Blue Hose to two NCAA Regional Tournaments in 1998 & 2003. After a very successful 11 year stint at PC, he jumped at the opportunity to work for Brian Shoop and his staff at Birmingham-Southern. The 2006 squad won the Big South Conference and Coach K’s pitching staff was ranked #48 nationally in ERA. Following that season, Kovash followed Shoop to UAB for three more years as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. “Doug was a great role model for our players. They saw him as a great husband, father, friend and man," said Shoop. In two seasons as the pitching coach at Birmingham-Southern, Kovash made an immense impact on the Panthers' pitching staff. In his first season, the BSC staff had a 3.99 ERA with 372 strikeouts and a 2.2:1 strikeout to walk ratio. His staff was ranked second in the Big South Conference in ERA and fewest earned runs allowed (223), while ranking third in strikeouts (372), wins (36), saves (8) and pickoffs (18). In the three years he spent at UAB rebuilding the pitching staff, Kovash engineered improvements in 17 of 21 key statistical categories while picking up major wins over Top 40 teams such as Alabama, Auburn, Rice, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, UCF, Houston, Memphis, Troy, Coastal Carolina, and Winthrop. In his five seasons as a Division I recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at BSC & UAB, Kovash saw 15 BSC & UAB players sign a professional baseball contract. A graduate of Concordia College (MN) with a B.A. in psychology, Kovash was a four-year letter winner as a left handed pitcher. His play earned him first-team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) recognition as a senior in 1986, in addition to being an AllMidwest Region honorable mention selection that same year. Following his undergraduate work at Concordia, Kovash went on to earn his master's degree in physical education (sport psychology) from Miami University in 1988. While studying at Miami, Kovash served as a graduate assistant with the Red Hawks. Aside from his college coaching experience, Kovash has mentored or coached several major league players while working clinics at some of the nation’s most prestigious programs. His list of clinics worked includes Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Minnesota, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Virginia. Kovash has presented on various topics at the Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina annual coaches clinics in recent years as well. This past summer, he led Team Alabama in the annual “Border Wars” summer showcase versus Team Tennessee & Team Georgia. Kovash, 50, was born on May 29, 1964 in Moorhead, Minnesota. He is married to the former Beth Marie Olson of New Brighton, Minn. They have been married for 27 years. The couple resides in Gardendale, Alabama and they have three children, Jenna (25) who recently married Brandon Harris. Jenna & Brandon are the proud parents of Coach K’s first grandson, Jesse Luke Harris. Jordan (23) is Coach K’s only son and Kayla (21) is his youngest daughter. 6 THE KOVASH FILE Coaching Experience 2014-Present ..........................LS Head Coach 2006-2009 ........... Coach Walker was hired by Coach Kovash in August 2013 following a stellar playing career at Samford University and at Wallace Hanceville CC. Coach Walker played for Randy Putman at Wallace Hanceville as a catcher, converted late in his career to become a relief pitcher and took his talents to the mound for Casey Dunn at Samford. His senior year at Samford, Coach Walker had the good fortune of playing in the Tallahassee, FL NCAA Division I Regional Tourney against Mississippi State, Florida State and UAB. Coach Walker earned his B.S. degree in Physical Education from Samford University in 2012. He also spent a season working with the Bulldog football team and former Heisman Trophy winner, Head Coach Pat Sullivan. Currently, Coach Walker serves the Cougar baseball program as recruiting coordinator, hitting coach, ››› infield and catching coach. In just one short year, Coach Walker signed 16 outstanding, talented players. There are three 90+ arms in that class as well as 6 out-of-state players from Florida, Georgia and Texas. The quality and depth of these signees have turned the Cougars into an immediate force to be reckoned with in the ACCC North Division. Born in Homewood, AL, Coach Walker moved with his family to Spanish Fort, AL where he graduated from Spanish Fort HS while playing for his dad, Tommy Walker. He lettered as baseball and football player for Spanish Fort HS from 2006-2008. Coach Walker recently married his college sweetheart, Kathryn Heasley, in June 2014 in Dallas, TX. Gil and Kathryn live in Homewood, AL. VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH ‹‹‹ JOSH CAGLE Josh Cagle was hired as a volunteer assistant coach at Lawson State in August 2013. A former left handed pitched for Stillman College (Tuscaloosa, AL), Coach Cagle enters his second season with the Cougar baseball staff after spending the 2013 year as the pitching coach for his alma mater and head coach Donnie Crawford. Coach Cagle works primarily with the Cougar pitching staff and assists Coach Kovash with scouting reports and defensive alignments during games. During the summer of 2014, Josh spent the month of June scouting the best high school talent in Alabama for Barry Dean and the AlaBCA Top 120 Showcase held @ Troy University. He also served as an 2015 LAWSON STATE BASEBALL assistant coach for Team Alabama as they competed in the “Border Wars” vs Team Georgia & Team Tennessee with the state’s top 40 players selected from the Troy Showcase. Coach Cagle had a stellar career pitching for Stillman from 2009-2013, leading his team to four straight conference championships and four straight NCAA Division II Post Season Regional Appearances. Originally from Tuscaloosa, Coach Cagle graduated spent four years playing for Tuscaloosa Academy high school team under head coach John Rushing. During the summer months while still in college, Coach Cagle assisted the Post 34 American Legion senior and junior teams. Better players, competing at a higher intensity and focus at practice and workouts and improved game day execution are just a few of things this team possesses. Luke Hastings, 2014 All Conference 3B North Division emerged as one of the top hitting and fielding third baseman in the ACCC North and had a tremendous fall. Juan Givan played all 50 games after transferring from UAB in January to lead the Cougar offense with a .310 batting average. Givan signed with Division I Nicholls State (LA) in November and has developed into the team’s quiet, steady leader. Givan will start @ SS. His move from 2B to SS opens the way for sophomore, Luke Ates and newcomers, Jared Benson & Caleb Ledbetter to fight for playing time at 2B. Ates is versatile and could see time @ 3B when Hastings pitches. Benson was one of the top hitters on the team in the fall while Ledbetter played better defensively. Cody Cox, slick fielding SS, should see plenty of time as well – either as Givan's back up or as a potential starter at 2B. In addition, the Cougars picked up another UAB mid-year transfer this year in Josh Vines. Vines was the starting SS for the powerful Hoover HS team in 2014. “We have so much more depth in the infield this year. “Not only do we have talent; we have options offensively and defensively as well,” said Coach K. Rookie Russell Phillips will play 1B and hit in the middle of the order. “Russell gives us something we never had in 2014 – a legitimate gap-togap power hitter who will drive in runs in the middle of the order,” Kovash said excitedly. Look for the Cougars offense to improve their run 12 production in 2015 with an exciting mix of power, tough outs that produce quality at bats and great team speed. “We are looking forward to the February 3rd season opener,” said Coach Kovash. The pitching staff will be anchored by three sophomores, Trey Johns, Scott Falkinburg & Luke Hastings. Three freshmen had outstanding fall campaigns and should start throughout the year. Look for Seth McWaters, Nick DeSantis & Andrew Faulkner pick up tons of innings this spring. Dual position player, Dallas Oliver, will see plenty of opportunities in relief when not running down balls in the outfield. Kelby Hallmark, Kyle Underwood, Ben Swicord and Snead State transfer lefty Aaron Anderson round out the pitching staff. Gentry Ford is the lead candidate for the position of catcher for the Cougars. Angel Castillo and Spencer Black will also share time with Ford. The outfield consists of seven talented athletes who run well, play good defense, and throw the ball well. LaDeavon Matthews, Gordon JC (GA) transfer, and Dallas Oliver will transition to the outfield after playing 1B & 3B in the fall. Both bring a nice blend of offense, power, and speed to the lineup. Mason Schoettlin has a slight edge over second year outfielders Scott Falkinburg, Darione Adkison, and Eric Yarbrough for the third outfield spot. Overall, the 2015 team has great team speed and great depth at all positions. We can also put the ball in the hands of six to eight pitchers and expect to win. The team’s goal is to work hard and strive to compete for Lawson State’s first-ever berth in the ACCC post season tournament in Ozark, AL in May. “If everything comes together as we think it can, we believe we can make history at Lawson State this season,” said Coach K. 2015 LAWSON STATE BASEBALL PLAYER PROFILES DARIONE ADKISON CODY COX #1 #2 OUTFIELD SHORT STOP GADSDEN, AL DOTHAN, AL Major: Career goal: Role model: Favorite Restaurant: Hobbies Physical Education Make a difference Mom Adkison Kitchen Church Major: General Studies Career goal: Fitness Trainer Role model: Dad & Step Dad Favorite Restaurant: Full Moon BBQ Hobbies Being at the lake GENTRY FORD DeMARCUS KELLY #3 #4 CATCHER OUTFIELD LUFKIN, TX TRUSSVILLE, AL Major: Career goal: Role model: Favorite Restaurant: Hobbies Kinesiology MLB player Marcus Luttrell Chen’s Chinese Food Riding Bulls/Horses 2015 LAWSON STATE BASEBALL Major: Sports Management Career goal: Coach Role model: Mother Favorite Restaurant: Wings Plus Hobbies Getting Tattoo’s 13 PLAYER PROFILES RONALD “ERIC” YARBROUGH, II DALLAS OLIVER #5 #6 OUTFIELD CENTERFIELD / PITCHER SHEFFIELD, AL CHIPLEY, FL Major: Chemical Enginering Career goal: Chemical Engineer Role model: Mom & Grandmother Favorite Restaurant: Grannies Home Cooked Meals Hobbies Being outdoors Major: Physical Science Career goal: Hitting Instructor Role model: Barry Bonds Favorite Restaurant: Outback Steakhouse Hobbies Meeting new people LUKE HASTINGS BEN SWICORD #7 #8 3RD BASE / PITCHER / OUTFIELD PITCHER TROY, AL DOTHAN, AL Major: Career goal: Role model: Favorite Restaurant: Hobbies 14 General Studies MLB player Dad Purple Onion Being outdoors Major: Engineering Career goal: Nuclear Plant Engineer Role model: Dad Favorite Restaurant: Longhorn Steakhouse Hobbies Hunting 2015 LAWSON STATE BASEBALL 14 PLAYER PROFILES JARED BENSON LUKE ATES #9 #10 2ND BASE / 1ST BASE 3RD BASE / 2ND BASE DOUGLASVILLE, GA EUFAULA, AL Major: Career goal: Role model: Favorite Restaurant: Hobbies Computer Science Working in I.T.T.
