WELCOME TO AWME 2014
Heidi Victoria
Minister for
the Arts
Welcome to Melbourne and to AWME 2014.
Music is part of the soul of this city and
AWME celebrates this by showcasing local
talent while celebrating sounds from across
the globe. It’s a home grown, internationally
renowned event and the Victorian
Government is very proud to be
a part of it. Enjoy!
Tony Grybowski
Chief Executive Officer
Australia Council for
the Arts
Now in its 7th year, this leading world
and roots music event continues to foster
wonderful opportunities for our region’s
music industry. Bringing together musicians,
industry partners and captive audiences from
around the world opens the door to exciting
collaborations and knowledge sharing.
This dialogue and exchange with national
and international counterparts is important
in developing valuable relationships,
especially in the ever changing music
industry.
Delegates in this year’s program bring a
wide range of expertise to the conference,
supported by an exceptional line up of
musicians. I encourage you to make the
most of the program where you will discover
musical highlights like the soulful and
seasoned Australian act Mojo JuJu, or the
Afro-folk sounds of Bongeziwe Mabandla
from South Africa.
I am impressed, and I have no doubt you will
be, by the quality of this year’s artists and
the rich diversity of the delegates. Welcome
to the Australasian Worldwide Music Expo

Welcome to my country, the land of the great
bay of the Boonerwung people, our beautiful
home. On behalf of the Boonerwung, a clan
of the greater Kulin nations, I welcome you

Today Melbourne is a great multicultural city
of the world and this special place continues
to carry forward the spirit of our tradition.
This land will always be protected by the
creator, Bunjil, who travels as an eagle and
by Waarn, who protects the waterways and
travels as a crow.
As the spirit of my ancestors lives, let the
wisdom and the spirit of generosity which
Bunjil taught us influence the opportunities
that may arise at this meeting place.

MS MURPHY
Ms Murphy–the fiery and heartbreaking stage persona of Karen Andrews–is a
knockout soul singer of old. Her debut single, Ritual Union, instantly bridges genres
and generations. It’s a cathartic, crackling blast that leads everyone, regardless of
allegiance, straight to the dance floor. Estère uses a mixture of bass, synth, drums,
guitar, vocal harmonies, keyboard, whistles, claps, kazoo, and anything else that
might take her fancy, then layers her production with pulsating rhythms and evocative
melodies that adhere to the genre of Electric Blue Witch hop. The queen of R&B,
Erykah Badu has already given her the stamp of approval. Bongeziwe Mabandla
has created a matchless Afro-folk sound, over which his soulful voice delivers in
both Xhosa and English, his sound has a rhythmically grassroots vibe, while fusing
elements of traditional Xhosa music, mbaqanga, soul, hip-hop and dub. His debut
album Umlilo, received two nominations at the South African Music Awards 2013.
Louis Baker is renowned for equal parts uplifting / tear-inducing live shows,
achingly raw lyrics intertwined with mesmerizing melodies and an emotive vocal
tone that produces shades of Motown-era soul, it leaves no question as to why
international media have touted this New Zealand singer-songwriter as one to watch.

SANTA TARANTA
Santa Taranta is a group originally from Italy but now Melbourne-based, playing a
mix of original and traditional music from southern Italy. From the Salento peninsula
to Mt Vesuvio they will infect your blood and keep you dancing like a spider and
weeping like la Madonna. Travel beyond the music, to a land where each note
is etched in the lines of giant stone statues. Let your soul fall in love with the
captivating sounds of Yoyo Tuki, and feel your spirit resonate with his Pacific-World
grooves. His eclectic mix of grooves and rhythms, dubbed Pacific-World Fusion, is
undoubtedly rare and refreshing. Bongeziwe Mabandla has created a matchless
Afro-folk sound, over which his soulful voice delivers in both Xhosa and English.
His sound has a rhythmically grassroots vibe, while fusing elements of traditional
Xhosa music, mbaqanga, soul, hip-hop and dub. His debut album ‘Umlilo’, received
two nominations at the South African Music Awards 2013. Winners of the Folk
Alliance Australia Performer of the Year 2014, Oh Pep! are musical explorers who
travel in the form of a band; a collaboration between songwriters Olivia Hally &
Pepita Emmerichs performing sometimes foot-stomping, somewhat heartbreaking original contemporary folk. If music is the food of love, then the recipe
can be found in the life of singer Leah Flanagan. Born and raised in Darwin, the
tropical multi-cultural capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, Leah has followed
a career trajectory that has built her reputation as a striking live performer and
inspired songwriter. Glenn Skuthorpe has long been recognised for his haunting
melodies and compelling lyrics in Australia. With a successful Canadian summer tour
this year and his song ‘No More Whispering’ featured on award-winning journalist
John Pilger’s film ‘Utopia’, his name is making waves around the world. Glenn will
release his fifth studio album at the end of 2014.

MIGHTY DUKE & THE LORDS DJ JESSE I
Melbourne Ska Orchestra recently returned from a blistering UK and Canadian tour,
which included shows at Glastonbury and Montreal Jazz Festival. Assembled from some
of Australia’s preeminent names in ska and reggae and fronted by inimitable frontman
Nicky Bomba (Bomba, Bustamento, John Butler Trio), the soaring popularity of the band is
seeing the MSO fast becoming a fixture of Australia’s musical landscape. This is music at
its most entertaining; vibrant, surprising, and with a beat to shame the Devil. This is Ska.
Bustamento are a tropical shaking six-piece that pays homage to the upbeat rhythms
of the Caribbean, covering the calypso, mento, early reggae and ska styles. Their first
album ‘Intrepid Adventures To The Lost Riddim Islands’ is a wonderful mix of jungle
drums, sweet harmonies, banjos, ukuleles, double bass, piano, trumpets, saxophones,
Loving and
steel drums, mbiras, jazz guitars and a healthy dose of Calypso rhythms.
respecting the offbeat sounds of Jamaica for a decade, The Ska Vendors offer up their
own flavour of ska, reggae, Jamaican rhythm and blues and rocksteady. With a line‐up
that includes a who’s who list of Australian and international musicians, live shows
are energetic, inclusive and sheer joy to be part of…with never an empty dance floor.

DJ Manchild has been bringing his unique brand of funk to the dancefloors of
Melbourne and beyond since early 2001. From dusty 70's soul 45's to heavy Nigerian

he will always be digging deep in crates around the globe bringing back that funky
booty for the people!
Saca La Mois DJ!! (a.k.a. Moses Iten) is an influential
DJ and producer of the Cumbia Cosmonauts (Chusma Records, Berlin) and The
