Your first thought behind the wheel of the new Cayenne S Hybrid may very well be a question: “How on Earth can this be a hybrid?” The answer is hybrid technology, the Porsche way. Honed on the track by revolutionary race cars like the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, yet translated to the road. The Cayenne S Hybrid is the epitome of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy “more from less.” Come in for a test drive and find all the answers on the road. Just like we did. Porsche. The time where the days get a bit shorter, the mornings are a bit colder, the air feels a bit crisper and the trees start to shed needles or turn colors. Yes, it feels like Autumn is around the corner. Autumn is a great time to get out and experience a drive with the club. The cars (especially the air cooled versions) really like the cooler weather and just seem to run better. With Autumn driving also come some fabulous INWR PCA events, with my personal favorite being our Oktoberfest gathering in Leavenworth, WA. If you have not been to Leavenworth for our Oktoberfest you should think about joining us. It is the event at which we do the least amount of driving, and the most socializing and spending time with other INWR PCA members. If you have not been to any INWR PCA event this year please think about joining us for something, before that first frost creeps up on all of us and the Porsche (sports cars) are relegated to slumber in the garages. Case in point: on our return trip from the recent Can-Am Tour, Keith Martin had us make a little detour through the town of Metaline Falls. If we had not done this at this particular time of day, we would have missed out on a tour of the Cutter Theatre located in the heart of this charming town. When we stopped in front of the building, the theatre director Susan Hobbs saw all of our Porsches lined up outside and came out to see what was going on. She knows Keith and invited us all in for a tour. It is a remarkable and well-restored buiding and one of the treasures of the Inland Northwest. It is well worth an intentional visit. You might never know where that side trip might take you, but if you have the time, do take it! Tschüs! Linda Polgar, Editor INWR The Results Are In Many of you may know that there is a contest every year for the best PCA newsletter. Each newsletter is judged against others in its regional class based on membership numbers. The results are announced at Porsche Parade. Some of you know I entered our little publication this year. The results are in and I must admit I did not place well in our class. We weren’t dead last, mind you! I received with the results the judges’ comment sheets and, at first, I resolved to take their suggestions into consideration to try and place better in the contest. Overall, though, the comments had more to do with some stylistic paragraphical matters, photo captions (and the lack thereof), and a few things we’ve already repaired by going to an online format. This being said; however, I am first and foremost YOUR editor. I will not suddenly change the overall style of this publication just so I can win a contest. When I announced at the July Membership Meeting about the results and my desire to do better, Kelly Dionne approached me after the meeting and let me know that when he was the editor (how many of you know that?), he knew about the rigors of entering the contest and decided instead to design the newsletter to be a source of information, reporting, and entertainment for the INWR. He has me convinced: I will continue this. I suppose what I am saying is that I will continue the style of this newsletter with a few improvements here and there like more captions with photographs in the articles (I’ll attempt this with the next issue). From the feedback I receive from many of you, I get the feeling you like what I’m doing. Thank you!! That means more to me than the (well-meaning) comments of five people I may never meet. Linda Polgar, your good-intentioned Editor This Page Is Really Reserved for You Don’t forget we have this Opinions-Editorials feature. Have a suggestion? A gripe? A compliment? An observation? With anywhere from eleven to twenty-two Porsches in one place at any one time, we were destined to do just that. On June 24th through June 26th, 2011, it was my distinct honor to be the official Tour Observer for the 2011 Can-Am Tour involving cars and guests from six PCA regions, including three region presidents. The planning, the scenery, the commeraderie, and the driving were all wonderful. Back to our spectacle. Here’s a synopsis of our vehicles: 4 Boxsters 1 Cayman 1 honored 356 Cab 1 brand, spanking new Panamera 1 944 turbo 14 911’s of various package, including a noted twin turbo...see Megan Sweeney’s article. A Collection of Perspectives Comments lip read or overheard: •From one driver we passed while leaving Creston, B.C.: “What the [rhymes with Duck]??!!!!” •From an appreciative observer passing through the parking lot at the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort: “There must be about a Million Dollars worth of Porsches parked here!” (The photo below was taken from the roof of the Ainsworth) •We even attracted the attention of a worker at the Boundary Dam near Metaline Falls, WA, who actually called the visitor center phone while we were there. He wanted to know where we were all from and thought it was pretty neat we’d stopped at his Dam to have a look. “Thanks for stopping!” he said. I think we gave him bragging rights among his coworkers. •Vancouver Island, president Gary Glover •Wild Rose (Calgary, Alberta) What a great group of people! Easily befriended and entertaining conversationalists. You know how we all are!! Oh, and the scenery and driving! British Columbia will continue to be one of my favorite places on earth. To actually be in the driver’s seat this time was an experience without equal. Boxsters love curves. While I was a small part of the “team” who made this all happen, so much of the thanks must go to our Tourmeister Keith Martin and wife Lena and to Keith’s resourceful partner-in-planning Rick Jordan. Each time we stepped off the bus, one of us would say, “Let’s come back for some independent exploring.” However, when we recently had the opportunity to experience the Kootenay Rockies in BC on a sports car road trip with Spokane’s Inland Northwest Region of Porsche Club of America, we forgot all about doing it on our own. The minute I read the well organized itinerary that Tourmeister Keith had prepared, I knew we were in September - October 2011 Über Alles 10 Can-Am Tour Can-Am Tour 2011: A Collection of Perspectives Depending on whom you ask, the highlight of the day was either the scenery or the driving experience. The series of long lakes bordered by mountain wilderness reminded me of our cruise excursion to Gudvagen, Voss and Flam in the Norwegian fjords. However, on that trip, the bus driver took control of the road. This time, it was Alan’s turn. Driving the New Denver Loop from Kaslo to New Denver, our Porsche zigged and zagged, hugging the curves of advertised local cultural events like one of the most scenic the jazzfest in Kaslo. It was an awesome run both to and from the Nakusp Hot Springs, and we definitely plan to do it again next year! Article by Matt Gerber W hile the rest of the group was finishing lunch on Saturday June 25th, Steve and Melissa Mohr along with Janet and I decided to join Duane Bentley, the BC Interior Vice President for a brief drive from Nakusp to Nakusp Hot Springs. Unbeknownst to us Duane is both a very capable driver as well as a member of the organizing group for Targa Canada. September - October 2011 After a leisurely drive North out of Nakusp on Route 23, we turned East on Hot Springs Road. Duane immediately picked up the pace on what turned out to be one of the most interesting (aka best Porsche drive) roads we have driven. There are no houses, driveways, crossroads, Active baby boomers will want to put a trip to the Kootenay Rockies on their travel list. In the summer, there’s enough boating, hiking, fishing, kayaking and mountain biking to keep boomers busy for days. And once the snow starts, the winter fun begins. The Kootenays are home to downhill and cross country skiing as well as snowcat skiing and snowmobiling. Have you visited the Kootenay Rockies? Post a comment to share your favorite activity. Alan and I are definitely returning to this area of British Columbia. INWR INWR Über Alles 11 Can-Am Tour Can-Am Tour 2011: F A Collection of Perspectives Article and photos by Megan Sweeney irst off, I wanted to say thank you to each and every Club member I’ve gotten to meet and talk to over the past few months. You’re all fantastic, with some very gorgeous cars, and I can’t wait to actually officially join the Club. For now, however, you have to put up with me being unofficial. :-) I was asked to do a little piece for the newsletter, and of course the focus of the entire drive for me was the New Denver loop drive. I was able to ride in an absolutely beautiful 996 Turbo; it was a dream come true. I have loved the Porsche 911 for quite a few years now, perhaps not as many as some but I completely love them nonetheless. My personal favorite has always been the 911 Turbo – to me, it wouldn’t get any better than having that gorgeous 911 body and that iconic flat six with the bonus of boost. I have talked about getting one someday myself for the past few years, as an eventual second or third 911. (I mean, I do need to get my first yet here!) When I was told I should come on the trip, I had no idea what a treat I was in for. I wish I could find the right words to describe that ride, but even now it escapes me. One of my favorite noises while driving a turbo car is listening to the turbo spool and I love the feeling when you hit boost. I really enjoy driving my 240sx as I love the peppy and quick turbo engine. The 911 Turbo, however, is completely different. She’s nice and refined under normal September - October 2011 driving, just like any other 911. But when the gas pedal is well used, she becomes something else. There’s still the hiss from the turbos, and still the feeling of hitting boost. But it’s more. There wasn’t anything I could do but giggle to myself and grin like a fool, and watch all the trees and street signs flash past. The only way I’ve come up to describe it is that if I wasn’t sure I wanted to get a 911 Turbo one day, I know now that I absolutely have to have one. It is the most amazing car I’ve ever had the privilege of riding in, and I am lucky enough to have years ahead of me to fulfill this dream and longing of owning one myself. Once again, I want to thank everyone for being so incredibly nice to me. I feel very lucky and blessed to be able to share the love of these fantastic cars with you all. And, if it wasn’t obvious before, I want to let you know that I love each one of your cars nearly as much as you do. :-) INWR Of course, I still need to get that first Porsche…. And I have my sights set on a 911 of some sort. But after a trip like that, I know it’s the right choice. Eventually I will be an owner myself, not just an enthusiast. Über Alles 12 356 Drive 356 Drive to Thompson Summit O n a beautiful Sunday morning of July 10th, an adventuresome group of 356 owners, friends and spouses, left Hayden, Idaho, for a wonderful drive in their early year Porsches. Eight 356’s ranging from 1958 to 1965, coupes, cabriolets, and a roadster drove out interstate 90 to the Rose Lake turn off, to have a hearty breakfast and good conversation, at the Rose Lake Café. It was a picture perfect morning, bright sun, blue skies and mild temperature, so all the open cars had gone topless. What a beautiful sight they were, all in a long line and getting lots of admiring looks and thumbs up. We drove along the Coeur d’ Alene river which was running very full after all the long winter snows and spring rains. We made our way up the road that goes to Murray and on up to the crest of the mountain where there is a good turnout and view point before it heads on down and into Montana. After a nice break we headed back down the hill to the tiny town of Murray, and to the Spragpole Bar and Steak House to purchase refreshments, September - October 2011 and for five of us, their wonderful huckleberry malts. For some, there was also time to visit the museum that is part of the establishment. A visit to that museum is a treat, and a step back to early times in Idaho and its mining communities, and it is open free to visitors. From there, folks found their way home, but all agreed it was a nice outing for us and our wonderful old cars. The weather was stunningly beautiful with 80 degree F temperatures and cloudless skies. The picture is from INWR member Bill Massy and shows the back of the pack through his Boxster’s side view mirror as the group left Rose Lake. After driving along the Coeur D’Alene river North to Prichard, ID, the group headed East and climbed some fabulous mountainside roads to the top of Thompson Pass which straddles Idaho and Montana and is at an elevation of 6814 feet. After a brief stop at the top of the pass (as shown in the photo from Klaus Huschke) the group continued Eastward into Thompson Falls Montana for some walking through town and a stop for lunch. From an email to the newsletter editors from PCA September - October 2011 Über Alles 19 Announcement 2011 Bogus Basin Bacchanalia NEW DATES!!: September 9-11 in Idaho The Silver Sage Region will again host the Bogus Basin Bacchanalia (BBB) weekend that includes PCA’s only hillcross. BBB is a multi-region event first held in 1976 that includes the hillcross, a mystery event, and a golf outing on September 9-11, 2011. The BBB weekend starts with registration and a get-acquainted dinner on Friday evening in the Pioneer Lodge at the Bogus Basin ski area, 16 miles north of Boise, Idaho. Saturday and Sunday are dedicated to the hillcross, where you can drive your Porsche as it was meant to be driven: safe, fast and on a beautiful stretch of winding mountain road. The course is nearly two miles long and features six tight turns and over 500 feet of elevation gain. For the second year, we have two days on the Hill. If you want to be challenged by the BBB hillcross, be sure to register early since the number of entrants in the hillcross is limited. Saturday ends with dinner and partying in the lodge. Sunday’s final event is the awards banquet, at which trophies will be handed out. Sometime during the weekend, a mystery event will take place. Since it’s a mystery, that’s all you get to know for now. Finally, on Monday there’s a golf outing for those so inclined at one of Boise’s better courses. You can learn more about BBB and get an application form by visiting the Silver Sage Region’s web site, ss.pca.org. September - October 2011 Über Alles 20 Announcement Park-in-the-Paddock includes genuine German biergarten, real turf, and lots of opportunities to relax and enjoy the magic Rennsport Reunion IV Will Feature Porsche Park W ith the rolling landscape and park benches on a perfectly-groomed lawn, you might think you were in Bavaria, which is exactly what Porsche Cars North America intends with its Porsche Park-in-the-Paddock—located amongst the vintage race cars at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, October 14-16. This area, located behind the media center (where the tire companies usually set up for a race weekend), will feature an authentic German biergarten as well as German food and and a park atmosphere so Rennsport attendees can take a break from the on-track activity and absorb the experience. But Rennsport fans will still know that they are at a Porsche event, as the Park-in-the-Paddock will have plenty of sports car activity as well, according to Bernd Harling, Porsche’s Principal Communications Counsel and coordinator for Rennsport. “Besides the food and drink, our Park-in-the-Paddock will include a center stage where driver introductions and all the autograph sessions will take place and live music will be played, as well as the very popular model car display, photo opportunities with the CARS movie star Sally Carrera—maybe our most famous 911—and a Porsche Sport Driving School activity center,” said Harling. “We also hope to have a sneak showing of a future Porsche model in the Park, but it’s a little too early to be able to confirm its appearance,” Harling teased. Other activities around the paddock are taking shape as well for the October event. “Porsche Motorsports North America, headquartered in Santa Ana, will have a display not only to show its modern and vintage race car parts and service capabilities, but to encourage the many Porsche race car owners to take advantage of the company’s free technical advice offered to anyone who asks,” said Harling. With the Porsche 911 being the featured race car of Rennsport IV, fans will also be able to view two 911 September - October 2011 displays which help capture the history of this iconic sports car. The first is a special collection of the most significant 15 race cars in 911 history. The other 911 display is being assembled by the Porsche Club of America, and proved to be very popular at Porsche Rennsport III at Daytona in 2007. In order to show the progression of the Porsche 911 model, the club has assembled 40 examples representing significant models across time. PCA will assist Rennsport Reunion IV with several activities: History of the Porsche 911 Display, Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership Center, two race groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club Racing for PCA race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to assist with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport Reunion Cup race, Michelin Tire Company comes on board as the spec tire manufacturer for that exciting contest. The assembly of exceptional examples of 911 production models for the History of the Porsche 911 Display is well underway, representing the 911 model throughout its generational life. To apply to participate in the display, please contact Tom Provasi for information and registration at tprovasi@netgate. net or 408/947-0980. But, not enough yet: The day closed with the ‘Cops & Kids Show’ in downtown Spokane. This event started at 7:00 pm and was to close at 11:00 pm. Six (6) Porsches turned out along with several other members that brought different types of cars and family. Those of us who attended, and that included Dave Cooley, our PCA Zone 6 representative, President Matt, Bernie Korth, Joe White, Barry Anderson, Rick Jordan, and myself, decided to leave a bit September - October 2011 earlier – or should I say late enough considering that our Porsche day started somewhere in the vicinity of 7:00 am. The Porsche of Spokane breakfast buffet didn’t only look like one from the better hotels along the Champs-Élysées, the food /the quality of it was just exceptional. No, I am not exaggerating. Many, many thanks to Klaus Kindor (the new Porsche Sales Manager) and Porsche of Spokane. Nobody could have asked for a more exciting start. Matt, after assuring that nobody was left behind, took on Team III. Each squad opted for a different route on how to get to Hill’s Resort at Priest Lake. We all made it and without an accident. As in years past, seeing 30 to 40 Porsches parked on the lawn in front of Hill’s Resort has always been a special experience for the many guests at and around this incredibly captivating and charming place. Never short on different Porsche models on our drives out to Priest Lake, the two Panameras this year got some special attention. As lunch was served, President Matt, after welcoming all of us, especially our guest of honor, Dave Cooley, Zone 6 PCA representative, introduced us then to Teri of the Hill family who own and operate Hill’s Resort. How she found not only Shirley’s but also Barry Anderson’s tickets will remain a mystery. They (Shirley and Barry) won the big prize, a stay and dinner at Hill’s Resort. After lunch, it was time to take a swim in the lake. Bruce Hunt, never missing an opportunity for some exercise, had tested the temperature of the water immediately at our arrival. Parade is a wonderful way to connect with Porsche friends from around the world, as well as participate in enjoyable activities, and excellent meals. Savannah is a beautiful old city, established as a colony on Savannah’s waterfront in 1733. The riverfront has played an important part in Georgia’s history as colonial port, exporter of cotton, or tourist September - October 2011 destination. The last riverfront cotton office closed in 1956, and the revitalization of the waterfront area began in 1977. The Westin Hotel and Convention Center, two of the sites for the Parade, are located on Hutchison Island, across the narrow shipping channel that leads to Savannah Harbor. Huge freighters laden with containers passed close to the convention center frequently. I arrived an hour and a half prior to the start of Registration on Sunday, and found my friend, Susan Brown, Parade Registrar, stayed there the entire afternoon. Other activities this day were the TSD Rally, Driving tour to Hilton Head Island, Michelin Drive & Compare, driving tour of Jekyll Island, and a bus tour to Brumos Autowerks in Jacksonville, FL. On Wednesday a tour bus took forty of us to Robert Irvine’s Eat! restaurant on Hilton Head Island, SC, for a cooking class. Tom Brown, Parade Chair, appointed me “Bus Captain,” and warned that if I left anyone at the restaurant he would be forced to fire me. Tom and I enjoyed many humorous times together during the years I was in the San Diego Region. Robert Irvine was traveling for the Food TV Network, so his business partner Lee Lucier presented the program. Lee regaled us with many humorous stories while presenting recipes that included: Hominy Hoppin John Salad, a delicious cold salad, and She Crab Soup (I enjoyed this so much that I ordered it for dinner back at the hotel). Of particular interest was Lee’s preference for Porsche Design knives made by Kron. These have a form fitting horizontal handle. After demonstrating the recipes and serving samples, Lee then introduced us to onsite chef Jared McElroy, who demonstrated how to make Caramel Key Lime Flan. While we were eating the delicious flan, I asked Jared what the basic steps to becoming a good home cook might be. Without skipping a beat he responded that mastering salt and pepper is the key to success. He suggested that we make soup from scratch without September - October 2011 salt, and then add a teaspoon of salt at a time to determine the amount required. Both Lee and Jared said that a properly prepared meal would not need additional flavoring at the table. I guess that is about as basic as it gets. That night, the Rally Banquet included a Casino Night for the first time. Attendees were given slips of paper worth twenty-five thousand dollars, and after dinner had the opportunity to make bets on a wide variety of games. Any money retained at the end of the gaming session could be traded for raffle tickets. It was a fun-filled evening. I put all of my winnings in the “all expense paid trip to Germany”, as did most everyone else. You might guess that since I’m writing this article from home that my number was not called. I should have put my tickets in the seat belt holder jar. now GM of the Museum described the cars undergoing restoration in some detail. When the groups switched, we found Race Director Skip Schinsing in the race shop, who gave us a fine presentation on the current Brumos Porsche GT3 RSR racecar, which is having great success this season. Don Leatherwood then led us into the Brumos Museum. This was a special privilege for PCA members, as fewer than five thousand people have been allowed to see the impressive Brumos collection. (See the May issue of Panorama for photos and details about the collection.) Don had an amazing knowledge of each of the many cars on display. A couple of hundred cars lined up by model type, and then drove through Savannah with police escort, bringing the town to a halt. Drivers reported shopkeepers, chefs, and patrons standing curbside waiving at Parade of Porsches participants. That evening the week long Parade concluded with the Victory Banquet, where the 1973 911 T restoration car was given away, along with another all expense paid trip to Germany, and other prizes. I was surprised to hear my name called for a free track day at Atlanta Motorsports Park, a private membership track designed by modern era Formula I track designer, Hermann Tilke. Now I’m awake at night weighing fun vs. expense of buying a trailer, hauling my Porsche across country and spending a day at the track. For a track junkie, decisions like this are not easy, even if they don’t pencil out financially. Next came the long awaited awarding of the beautifully restored 1973 911T raffle car. The actual people who restored the car from Porsche Classic were on hand to turn over the key to the “betterthan-new” 911 to raffle winner, Bud Kibbee, who was attending his first Parade. The ceremony was thrilling to see. After having so much fun seeing so many friends and participating in a number of events, concluding the Parade made me eager for the next one. Bonilla, GCR PCA Reprinted with permission ave you ever had the Check Engine Light (CEL) come on in your car? If it has, it’s actually the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) which lets you know that there’s a problem in the engine management system. Whenever I’m servicing a Porsche and see the MIL on, it bothers me a little bit that the symbol is of a small block V8 and not of a beautiful flat 6 from a GT3. The automotive monitoring system was developed by CARB (California Air Resource Board) and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) in an effort to reduce vehicle emissions, beginning in 1988. It was called the OBD-I (On Board Diagnostic, generation 1). The system mandated by CARB, had to illuminate a “check engine” light to notify the driver that there was a potential failure in an emission’s component and the system also had to store a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) in memory. The regulations for OBD-I were very easy for manufacturers to comply with, since they were already monitoring most of these systems, but each manufacturer monitored in their own way. Because of inconsistencies in the DTCs as well as in the data connectors from manufacturer to manufacturer and the inability of OBD-I to detect emissions system degradation, a new monitoring system went into effect in 1996, the OBD-II. It should have been in 1994, but it got delayed 2 years. Below you can see the original Porsche OBD-I connector (round) which is found on the 964s and early 993s as well as on the later 944s and 928s and on all of the 968s. The more trapezoid connector on the right, is the OBDII found in all Porsches after model year 1996. This newer version of On Board Diagnostics is much more sophisticated than it’s predecessor, and aside from doing all that the OBD-I did, it also added the ECM (Electronic Control Module) which controls the operation and performance of the vehicle’s subsystems. OBD-II now monitors: ECT Sensor (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor) IAT Sensor (Intake Air Temperature Sensor) IAC Valve (Idle Air Control Valve) BARO Sensor (Barometric Pressure Sensor) TP Sensor (Throttle Position Sensor) ECM / PCM (Engine Control Module / Powertrain Control Module) The specific ways in which the manufacturers had to comply with the regulations was not specified and each manufacturer made their own interpretations. For instance, the regulations state that a car has to monitor engine misfires, but doesn’t specify how, therefore some manufacturers look at O2 sensor waveforms, others look at crankshaft fluctuation and still others look at the current in the secondary ignition system. September - October 2011 Über Alles 29 PedrosGarage Needless to say that OBD-II is a very complicated but very useful system which alerts the driver and the technician of possible engine malfunctions. The OBD-II is capable of generating two different types of diagnostic codes: “Generic” codes that are the same for all makes and models of vehicles (required by law) and ... “OEM” codes that are unique to specific vehicle manufacturers. The OEM codes cover non-emission related failures such as ABS, HVAC, Airbag, Electrical, etc. The generic codes can be can be read using a basic code reader or scan tool that is OBD-II compliant and usually cost less than $100 at any auto parts store. More and more car enthusiasts are adding an OBD-II code reader to their tool case to help them diagnose simple failures. Because of the myriad of sensors and readings, a “Check Engine Light” or “Malfunction Indicator Light” can be triggered by something as simple as a loose gas or oil cap, since the system is also monitoring vacuum levels. So an OBD-II scan tool can pay for itself if it helps you to discover something like this, saving you a trip to the repair shop. But, when the system failure is more complex, you will need to have a much more powerful tool that is capable of accessing all of the codes, as well as almost every component in the vehicle such as those found at the dealerships and independent repair facilities. The one shown here, the PST-II (Porsche System Tester-II) was the second generation tester from Porsche, which recently introduced the PIWIS (Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System) as the latest in Porsche diagnostic tools. September - October 2011 Über Alles 30 PedrosGarage The screen on the PST-II which can be seen below, corresponds to the same error code (P054) as shown above on the handheld scanner, but as you can see, there is much more information and accessible data on the specialized factory scanning system which help to find and correct failures much more quickly. What the CEL should mean to you is: If you see the CEL / MIL on, continuously, it’s telling you that the system found a malfunction in it’s monitoring. You should have the error code(s) read as soon as possible and perform corrective services If you see the CEL / MIL flashing, it’s telling you that the engine is misfiring and damage to the engine is possible if it keeps running. Shut it off and contact a qualified tech or have it flat-bedded to a shop / dealership. The CEL / MIL can turn itself off when the monitoring system determines that the trigger is no longer present, such as tightening the gas cap. Welcome: Pete and Leslie as guests of Matt and of Karch and Linda, respectively. Vice President’s report: Encouraged all to participate in the INWR Festival of Speed this coming weekend. (After the Chee Chee’s drive of course!) There will be a mixed car corral this time. Pretty much any really nice car can participate in the corral. There will also be 3 laps behind a pace car on both days as during the SOVREN event. This is fun, especially if you’ve never been on the track. Secretary’s report: Requests that word gets out sooner about the SOVREN races and the FoS so as to have more participation from other clubs. We had excellent support from the Porsche club but it was light from the other local clubs. September - October 2011 Treasurer’s report: All standard income and expenses. We will meet at Porsche now. of Spokane at 9AM for coffee and depart for Chee Chee’s at OLD BUSINESS: 10:30AM. The Lighthouse for the Blind event was very successful. A couple of glitches along the way but as an event it was great. And, the club raised about $1,000 for the charity. Interesting and amazing stories were shared by all. The club was pleased to be a part of the event and plan to participate next year as well. The CanAm tour: 6 clubs and 3 region presidents. Matt Gerber said it was the most fun he has had at any event, period! Wow! What did we miss? The web site has great pictures but you just had to be there. Keith did an awesome job! Thank you. Car D’Lane: Lots of great cars but unfortunately it rained copiously. Bad luck, maybe better next year. NEW BUSINESS: German car show put on by the BMW Club at Comstock Park last week. It was a neat small event with a great group of car nuts. We Thompson Falls: July 23rd. The road is clear. Several members have driven the road in the past 2 weeks. The consensus was that the west side was excellent but the east side was mildly rough. Matt reported that the drive is on but they will take it easy on the east side. The weather should be great. Remember the Pomeroy Show and Shine on Sept 17th. It will coincide with the Garfield county fair and rodeo. The show is Porsche/VW specific and will be held in the city park in downtown Pomeroy. Come out and enjoy the hospitality of Garfield County and the city of Pomeroy. Show off your car, and, don’t forget the barrel racing. If you play your cards right you might get invited to drive your Porsche around the barrels instead of a horse! Stump the Chump: Oops. Just chumps. Did I say how good the food was? Oh yeah, it was good. Über Alles 33 Meeting Minutes INWR Meeting Minutes Monthly Membership Meeting August 10, 2011 Max at Mirabeau Park Hotel - Chee Chee’s BBQ on July 16.
