2014 Community Impact Report - YMCA of Brockville and Area
A Place to Belong YMCA of Brockville and Area 2014 Community Impact Report Outstanding and transformative moments happen every day at the YMCA. Sometimes the impact is clear and easy to articulate. Often it takes years to fully appreciate the effect our programs and services have had on an individual and consequently the community we serve. As a leading charity we work hard to foster an environment where people of all ages see a place for themselves and develop a keen sense of belonging. Feeling a sense of belonging and having a sense of purpose is important. Critically important. It enhances our overall health and well-being. Every day, 1,000 people enter our doors to exercise, to interact, to learn, to grow, to be cared for or to care for others. Our special partnership of staff and volunteers make it all happen. As we look back on 2014, we appreciate our continuing role in meeting the needs and nurturing the potential of the communities we serve. Last year, 7, 838 individuals participated in YMCA programs, becoming active and taking charge of their health. As a charity with deep roots in the community, we are grateful to the many talented staff, volunteers and generous donors who answered our call to do more. Strengthening community is our cause. Transforming lives is what we do. We hope you will enjoy the 2014 Annual Impact Report, a testament to the community we are building together. Friends, laughter and fun is what you will find at your YMCA. We welcome you to come through our doors, find where you belong and tell us your Y story. Sara (Sahira) Piracha Chair, Board of Directors Diana Deakin-Thomas Interim CEO Photo credit Nikita Chartrand, Youth Volunteer Volunteers L-R Cathie Motluk, Lesley Dunning and Carrie Allan-Graves Each of these amazing women have been making a difference in the lives of others here at our YMCA since the 1980s. Each has been awarded the Dr. Stanley Brown Award, our highest recognition for our dedicated volunteers. Collectively, they have volunteered for close to 100 years. Carrie began volunteering when she was young and in the area of youth programs, now she leads fitness classes and “really enjoys talking to people and helping them to become more aware of being fit and healthy”. When Lesley came to the Y in the 1980s she “didn’t even own sneakers but with encouragement she joined”! Lesley has taught many things here at the Y and currently leads our very popular meditation classes. Lesley encourages people to get involved – to learn of the volunteer opportunities available. Cathie tells us; “volunteering is a rewarding experience. I get as much if not more out of everything I do. Try volunteering as it may turn out to be the best thing in life.” Cathie leads our popular morning classes on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. This is a very fit group– don’t let age deceive you, you might be hard pressed to keep up! Cathie can also be found volunteering at Youth Night in the pool. Cathie also volunteers during the Annual Giving Campaign. Adapted: Doreen Barnes, St. Lawrence News with thanks Potential Matt’s story was shared in our 2014 Annual Giving Strong Kids Campaign. “I first came to the YMCA at the age of three. My mother was a single parent and my sister and I needed care while she worked. We started in Child Care with the financial assistance program and didn’t leave for a decade! Child Care turned into Summer Camp and I attended until I was too old to go anymore. The Y adventure camp has made a huge impact on my life. I had a blast every year and made lifelong friends. Having so much fun at camp helped me to determine my college education path and in 2014 I graduated with a Recreation and Leisure Services diploma. The YMCA has inspired me to give back and help children to have amazing experiences like I had. My family was helped when we really needed it and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the YMCA of Brockville and Area. I am forever thankful!” A love affair with Life photo of Doris McEwen and Audrey Beedie Each in their 90s, these two women are mainstay at our YMCA. They believe that volunteering and staying involved in the community are very important parts of their lives. Doris was a member of the 1948 London Olympic team and continues to swim daily at the Y – she is surrounded by friends – and has a self-proclaimed “love affair with life”. She tells us, “You meet the nicest people along the way”, and truly believes volunteering leads to a better life. Audrey doesn’t like to be sitting at home; “I like to do something – I love the people and I like talking”. She believes her “work” at the Y is an essential ingredient to a long and happy life. In April 2015 Audrey received the June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism for her 70 years of volunteer service to her community. Both are very capable and live on their own but recognize that perhaps one day, they might need help themselves. They love being a part of the “Y Family” and encourage others to volunteer regardless of age. Adapted: Alanah Duffy Recorder and Times-with thanks Helping young Pictured here are three of our awesome TLTs (Tomorrow’s Leaders Today) Allie Stewart, Noah Xavier Williams and Emily Cooper. Allie, Noah and Emily help lead, under the staff tutelage of Joshua Hart-Plath and Ruth Carter, our Saturday Youth Nights at the YMCA. Initially they came to the YMCA to fulfill their volunteer hours but soon realized how much fun it is to lead. They recall a time when they were young and “ruled the Y”. This amazing group of teens and their leaders offer 30 Youth Nights throughout the year. They learn leadership skills while kids from grades one to eight come to hang out at the Y. Although outgoing, Allie shares that volunteering at the Y has had a huge impact on her social skills. “Let the Y embrace you” she advises! Emily encourages folks to “come to the Y, as it is a really great experience”. Noah believes young people should consider joining the TLT program because of the considerable skills one obtains in this leadership role. He also shares; “this is the best feeling as we get to inspire the younger generation”. Adapted: Doreen Barnes, St. Lawrence News with thanks people find their path Growing up today can be hard. Our YMCA Youth Leadership Development programs such as Tomorrow’s Leaders Today (TLT) engage more than 20 young people annually to feel prepared and confident to meet the demands and challenges ahead of them. 2,000 children participate in YMCA Learn to Swim programs each year 750 children coming from 30 local area schools participate in our Swim to Survive program – a brilliant partnership between our local school boards, the Lifesaving Society through the Stephanie Gaetz Foundation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart and the YMCA. Hundreds participate in our AquaFit classes each week to get active and have fun with friends . We have an AWESOME pool ~ The D.B. Green Pool! It’s what happens in that pool that really matters! The ability to swim is many fold. It is a skill that enables one to be safe in and around water and given our community is so close to water it is an essential skill. It provides a great way to exercise one’s whole body, it’s refreshing, it’s fun. A minimum of 30 Saturday nights throughout the year bring 120 kids to our YMCA Youth Night where they can have fun in the pool as the space becomes “theirs”. We provide leadership training to approximately 30 people each year so they can become lifeguards and swim instructors. Our Jr. Lifeguard program works with 40 kids over the course of the year. We employ 40 awesome aquatic staff throughout the year! Photo credit Nikita Chartrand, Youth Volunteer Economic Barriers Removed Under the skillful and heartfelt leadership of Campaign Chair Ian McFall and his amazing team, our YMCA raised $328,000 in 2014. No one is turned away from participating at our YMCA due to an inability to pay the full fee. The YMCA builds community by creating an environment where ALL can participate on a level playing field. The need in the community continues to grow with one in ten families, one in nine children living below the poverty line, and one in 12 families reporting an inability to put food on the table (Lanark, Leeds and Grenville). 60% of the Brockville population is overweight or obese, which leads to higher chronic health conditions. At the YMCA we believe a sense of belonging is critically important for each and every one of us. Feeling a part of something is essential to our well-being. Friends, laughter and involvement are what you can find at your YMCA. Someone to lend a hand or someone for you to lend a hand to...a place to belong...your YMCA. photo credit Doreen Barnes, St. Lawrence News It’s ALL about Play—it’s my job! We are laying the groundwork for our young learners. Close to 800 children participate in our many child development programs. From full day Child Care to before and after school programs to summer camp, the YMCA is here to provide safe, affordable and nurturing experiences for the youngest members of our community. . Our YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum puts PLAY at the core of our program. Our research based curriculum includes play based discovery learning, exceptional staff, small groups, positive environments and family participation with a focus on literacy, math, science, arts and construction. Our YMCA Healthy Child Development and YMCA Raising Healthy Kids, is an asset based approach that guides our work with older children. Close to 350 children attend camp each summer and we host a myriad of programs for thousands of children both at our Park Street location and in numerous rural communities. From swim lessons to karate, cooking lessons to birthday parties, we have a philosophy regarding how we work with children—a philosophy we call the “asset building difference” - the building blocks of healthy development that help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible. All leading to the building of our Healthy Communities. Our work is meaningful 7,838 563 Children in care at the Y and in Licensed Home Child Care. YMCA Healthy Kids Day More than 200 people attended the YMCA Healthy Kids Day community celebration event on June 1, 2014. They danced, climbed, swam, cycled, and played — showing kids that being active and healthy can also be a whole lot of fun. YMCA Peace Week During YMCA Peace Week, November 16-22, 2014, local peacemakers were recognized for their commitment to building a stronger, healthier community. 2014 YMCA Peace Week Recipients Rhona Dixon Adult Peace Medallion Recipient (above) Jocelyn Noccey Youth Peace Medallion Recipient (left) We are learning that social isolation and feeling a lack of belonging is affecting members of our community.
