"Raghad isteach sna sléibhte,
raghad isteach sna scamall
ar ball...."
Eighteen years ago Mícheál Fanning had the inspired idea to
start an arts festival called Féile na Bealtaine. The first programme was printed on two sides of a single sheet of paper
and consisted of a half a dozen readings with some music.
From such humble beginnings Féile na Bealtaine has grown
to become a five day festival packed with music, discussion,
art, storytelling, theatre, literature and politics, all of the
things that enrich our lives. Mícheál strongly believed that
all sectors of society and all age groups should have access
to artistic events. That is what we have endeavoured to do
with the 2012 programme. We think he would approve of this
years line up.

Ealaín Visual Arts Settlement-Spectral Traces of
a Global Crisis?
'These are decidedly modern landscape
photographs that also allow themselves to be
haunted by Ireland’s past. The images foreground the natural environment – the grass,
soil, and rock – and visualise the developments
as disordering the topography. The absence (or
oblique traces) of human life in the photographs highlights the uncanny decoupling of
these houses from their function as places of
dwelling. They evoke not so much the intrusion
of people into the unspoilt landscape, but the
incursion of a more senseless and arbitrary
capitalism, itself decoupled from the basic
premise of supply and demand. As such, they
offer a fitting visual metaphor for the property
boom, a record of the tangible material affects
of the international financial crisis and Ireland’s
entangled property crash. Haughey’s images
evoke more than the spectre of the recent
past, however. As landscape photography, they
operate in relation to the stereotypical images
of Ireland as green, lustrous, ancient and unspoilt. They depict the struggle over place and
narrative characteristic of the current moment
as people engage in complex renegotiations of
personal and collective history, identity, and
purpose in an effort to rediscover what Ireland
‘means’’

Posts explores the idea of the journey and pilgrimage. It also looks at the marks that people
make on the landscape during this process.Focusing on the pilgrimage route on Mt Brandon
to explore these ideas Sadie used the medium
of photography to record the route. Each post
is similar however the background changes
ever so slightly bringing you closer and closer

Tá sé deacair ciall a bhaint as rud atá ró-mhór nó
ró-bheag. Ní thugtar aird ar nithe beaga, agus ar
a mhalairt, má tá rud ollmhór ní féidir an iomlán
a fheiscint ag aon am amháin, ná é a shamhlú go
cruinn. Sé iniúchadh an saothar seo don réimse
atá feicthe agus dofheicthe ag an am céanna.

Artist: Ann Reilly
Ann Reilly primarily works with oils on canvas.
The palette that she uses has changed dramatically under the influence of the West Kerry
landscape and dramatic skies. There is often a
dreamy, mystical quality in rural Ireland which
Ishe tiesy to capture on canvas.
