FEIN celebrates
120 years of drilling.
The history of the electric hand drill and therefore of the
world's first power tool is closely linked to our company's
own history. It began in 1895 with a revolutionary idea. Two
of FEIN's mechanics faced the cumbersome task of drilling a
large number of holes by hand.
To save time, they fitted the mechanical chuck onto the shaft of a
small electric motor – and there it was, the first electric drill. Emil
Fein, the eldest son of the company's founder, immediately recognised
the huge potential of this improvised solution and paved the way for
the rapid development of the world's first power tool.

He worked on developing the electrically driven drill and launched it
onto the market. The "light" 7.6 kg tool was held in two hands and
operated at 110 V DC. It achieved 1200 rpm and had a power output
of 50 W. It was able to drill around 4 mm in steel. However, the tool's
handling and shape are very different from today's models. Nowadays
we simply can't imagine the work of tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts
without power drills.
Ever more powerful and
even better than before.
The company found itself up against competition from other
companies who continually tried to better one another with lighter,
safer and more powerful models.
FEIN played an important role in this era of development when it
became the first to launch a drill with a light metal housing. In 1903
the first multi-speed drill allowed users to drill at different rotational
speeds. Various handle shapes became established around 1920. The
spade handle developed by FEIN and the gun handle are the most
famous and still shape the ergonomics of today's models.
Development work doesn't stand still.
As in the past, virtually all of FEIN's professional and extremely
reliable power tools are still developed, produced and assembled
in Germany. Customers associate the name with power, precision,
reliability and durability.
And of course, development work on the drill doesn't stand still.
FEIN launched a new generation of drills in 2010. This was followed
by the first hand-guided drill system for core drilling in metal and
powerful cordless drills and 4-speed cordless drill/drivers.
