C O R N E R
Each year we honor and recognize
all of our volunteer members who
work so hard to keep our congregation up and running. We don’t
often enough acknowledge their
dedication and devotion to our
Temple, to our ongoing programs
and activities, and to the continued
well-being of our congregation.
From our elected officers and board
Rabbi Joseph P. Klein members who manage and direct
our fundraising, programming and personnel, to our ushers
and greeters, our committee members and project workers
and gardeners— you are the life-force of our congregation,
its heart and soul, its arms and legs.
On Friday night, April 19 we will honor all of you at our
Annual Volunteer Shabbat. And as a representative and
model of the outstanding volunteer efforts of our membership, we will singly honor Don and Marilyn Kaczander
Cohen, who have done so much, both individually and as
a couple, to maintain and grow our congregation. They represent so well the devotion and dedication of all our members. Please join us on April 19 as we gratefully honor Don
and Marilyn, and of course each of you-- for it is because
of all of you that we are the vibrant and active, warm and
welcoming, family of families that is Temple Emanu-El.
Each Friday night in April will be its own special Sabbath
celebration. Our First Friday Family Service, featuring our Youth Choir and family-friendly worship, will
be followed by our Sisterhood Shabbat on April 12, a
celebration of 100 years of the Women of Reform Judaism.
The Friday after Volunteer Shabbat will be our Scholarin-Residence Weekend as we welcome Dr. Joel Hoffman.
Please note the complete schedule of his presentations on
the front cover of this Bulletin (as well as my program on
April 14). All of his four public programs are free and open
to all, though we will sincerely appreciate your becoming
an Adult Education Supporter or Patron for $150 or $225,
which includes the Friday dinner, Saturday lunch and Saturday evening dessert reception.
From the 1st day of April and our Last Day of Pesach
Worship and Yizkor, to the end of the month’s Scholar
Weekend—this will be an exciting and very active April at
Temple. Please join us for a wonderful month.
TEMPLE EMANU-EL: WHERE YOU BELONG

information and his own insights on what will be
Dr. Hoffman’s Sunday morning presentation.
Volunteer Shabbat – Friday, Apr 19
On Friday night, April 19 we will honor all of our volunteers whose dedication and commitment are so important
to our congregation.
Representing all
our volunteers,
we will honor
Don and Marilyn Cohen that

longtime contributions to our
congregation,
each in their
own distinctive
ways. Please
join on the 19th
as we gratefully
honor Don and
Marilyn and
all of you who
contribute so
much to Temple
Emanu-El. It is
because of your

NEWS FROM THE ECC WHERE OUR EXPERIENCE PROVIDES
YOUR CHILD WITH THE BEST EXPERIENCE
Our Passover seders generated enthusiasm
among all of the ECC children. Excitement filled the air as I turned water into
blood. Using Haggadot and props made
by the children enhanced the storytelling
of the Jewish plight for freedom.
As of this writing, we are all looking
forward to our grandparents joining us on
Eileen Brand
Friday, April 19th, for breakfast, shabbat
and an intergenerational classroom activity with their grandchild.
Enrollment is well underway for the 2013-2014 camp and
school year. Once again, we welcome mitzvah students to
work at our summer program. Volunteers must commit to a
three week session of camp.
I am looking forward to attending the Annual Early Childhood Director’s Retreat. The guest speaker this year is Anna
Hartman, speaking on Jewish Leadership for a Unique Jewish Early Childhood Education in Metro Detroit.
I recently attended a meeting at Federation to discuss marketing strategies for ECC programs. Opinions were divided on
strategies, and several ECC Directors and Executive Directors felt money would be better spent if it were available
for scholarships for ECC education. Research indicates that
when choosing a Jewish pre-school parents choices are most
influenced by friends; they seek recommendations from their
peers and go where their friends go. “Relationship weaving”
is the phrase reflecting the interest of parents to form relationships with other families.
In looking ahead - mark your calendars for the Young Masters Art Exhibit, Wednesday evening, May 8th, at the Temple.
Children have the opportunity to choose their favorite works
of art, which our teachers have been keeping in individual
portfolios. The art work is framed for display throughout the
Temple. As you “kvell” over your child’s creativity, take a
moment to observe the developmental stages reflected in the
art of the different age groups. Following the exhibit everyone is welcome to join us in the Esther Katzman Hall for an
ice cream social. We welcome all volunteers to help us set
up and take down the art work. No experience needed! We
always enjoy the participation of our alumni families.
Women of Reform Judaism
Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood
“On January 21-23, 1913
156 women representing 52
UAHC member synagogues and
sisterhoods met in Cincinnati,
OH. There, in conjunction with
the UAHC’s 23rd Council, the
founding and general convention
of the National Federation
of Temple Sisterhoods took
place.”
Did you know that Reform Jewish women sisterhood
members were marching with the suffragettes to urge
passage of the women’s right to vote?
We cordially invite you to attend our Centennial
Celebration of the 100th year of the founding of the
Women of Reform Judaism!
Friday, April 12, 2013
6:00 PM Dinner
$17.50 per adult, $7.00 for children 11 and under
Vegan and Gluten free menu
(RSVP to the Temple Office by April 9)
A short video detailing the history
of Sisterhood will be shown
8:00 p.m. – a specially written
Erev Shabbat service will be used to
celebrate this important occasion.
Come and learn more about the beginnings of
Sisterhood and Temple Emanu-El’s contribution to
the history of Sisterhood.
If you would like to join Sisterhood or have forgotten
to pay your membership, we are offering a $20 per
half year fee for this year only. Please consider joining
and bring your ideas!!

BROTHERHOOD SPEAKER
Sunday, April 14 11:30 a.m.
Dennis Clotworthy
Owner / President, Decade Concepts LLC
Dennis grew up in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, one block
south of Tiger Stadium, and was in the right place at the right time to
land a bat boy job that most young boys only dream about. He started
out in the visitor’s clubhouse 1972-1973 and moved to the Tigers home
clubhouse in 1974-1975.
He was in the clubhouse with the Oakland A’s after they defeated the
Tigers for the 1972 American League pennant, and was on the visitors bench in a California Angels uniform when Nolan Ryan pitched
his second career no-hitter against the home town Tigers. Dennis was
Norm Cash and Al Kaline’s last bat boy.
He will share excerpts from his upcoming book.
A hot dog lunch will be provided. Please join Temple Brotherhood for a morning of great baseball memories.

Teen Shabbat April 26th at Friday Night Services
Last year teens led a Saturday morning service, this year, on April 26th, Friday
Night services will be led by Temple teens, with the help of Cantorial Soloist
Kelly Onickel. The teens will lead Hebrew and English prayers, play music and
share their own readings and reflections. In the spirit of the Scholar-in-Residence
weekend, during which this service will take place, teens briefly share their reasons
and experiences continuing their Jewish education post Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Monday
Night School will bake items for the oneg. After the service teens are invited to
Geoff Berdy
their own oneg and social event hosted by TEMTY. Teens are not required to be
enrolled to participate, those who are interested may contact Geoff Berdy ([email protected])
or Kelly Onickel ([email protected]) for more information.
Community Garden’s Second Annual Earth Day Celebration April 21
Last year we inaugurated the community garden at Temple Emanu-El in partnership with our neighbors Jewish Senior Life and the Jewish Community Center. This year we continue what will become
an annual tradition. Students will help clean up and compost the garden beds in preparation for spring
planting. We will again make signs in Russian, Hebrew and English identifying what is growing in each
bed. Students will also learn about Jewish ecological values and how innovative irrigation systems used
in gardens like ours were developed in Israel. The event will kickoff at 9:00 am in the garden with local
dignitaries, including the mayor of Oak Park, present to help celebrate the garden’s special partnerships. Volunteers are needed.
Please call 248-967-4023 or email [email protected].

notes:
Temple Annual Membership
Commitment for 2013-14
Please watch your snail
and email boxes for
details on:
It's time again to start talking about and planning for the next fiscal
year at Temple. The Financial Obligations Committee and Budget
Committees began meeting in February to make sure we can present
a balanced budget proposal to the Board for approval in May. That
means that, in early May, it will be time for you to recommit to your
annual support for Temple Emanu-El. Specifically, it's time to talk
about membership pledge forms and member dues. Your annual dues
are the source/foundation of Temple’s viability. Dues make up almost
60% of temple revenues. And all of us should be very proud that we
have a collection rate of 96% on dues pledges! Clearly our members
understand how important it is that pledges be fulfilled so we can
plan our cash flow and know we can rely on membership pledge
money being received. (As always, for those members not able to
commit to full Temple dues, use of the AGI table or the extraordinary
dues adjustment process is available.) Dues payments can be made
by automatic charges to a credit card and now credit card payments
can be made with American Express as well as Visa and MasterCard.
• Free dues raffle
• Annual Membership renewal packet in early May
Susan J. Kirschner
• Notice of the Annual Meeting and Congregational Dinner (May 28) where we
present the budget and elect trustees for 2013-14
This is a busy time in the office. We are working on
the items mentioned above (budget, membership
renewal materials, free dues raffle) which take time
and thoughtful input from lay people and professional staff. And we are becoming very excited as
the May 18 Legacy of Leadership Gala honoring
Lois & Milt Zussman and Julie & Rick Zussman
approaches.
Planning for 2013-14!
On Tuesday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. senior staff
along with representatives of all committees and
arms meet to review/plan calendar items for the
fiscal year that begins July 1. Please make sure
your group is represented at this important meeting!
Draft planning calendars will be sent to chairpersons in late March. Please fill them in with your
desired dates for meetings and events and return
them to the office by April 15 so we have time to
put desired dates into a draft “master calendar.”
This will be distributed at discussed on the April 30
meeting.
Let’s remember another important aspect to membership. That is
keeping our spiritual house - our Temple - building in good condition. This is made possible by your payments on the building fund
assessment. This aspect of your membership needs the same commitment as that made for dues to sustain the physical space where we
gather together.
Lastly the temple has established a Financial Obligations Committee
composed of volunteer temple members. If you need to talk about
your particular situation, Susan Kirschner is always available, but
you can also speak to a member of the FOC and request an in-person
meeting.
Please return your pledge forms early this year and commit to a
pledge you can honor.
We thank you so much for your commitment and for your payments
on those commitments! I look forward to seeing you around Temple.
Richard Gold,
Treasurer and Chair of the Financial Obligations Committee

SOCIAL IN ACTION at Temple Emanu-El
Brovary
Once again, Lynn Cooper’s class rose to the challenge of continuing to
amass their tzedakah to total $308 to accomplish their goal of $300 per semester. This was accomplished because many students contributed EVERY
week, some parents MATCHED their kids donations, and Mrs. Cooper
instills a zealous enthusiasm to GIVE!
The following letter was written by Laura Topf:
Dear Congregation,
The 5th Grade is participating in an ongoing project. It is called the 5th
Grade Brovary project. We are donating money to Brovary. Brovary is a
small Jewish community in Ukraine. They need money to support their Jewish community. In the past, Ms. Cooper’s class has paid for matzoh, challah, candles, etc. If you ever see Ms. Cooper, give her a
hug and a quarter. Every penny counts. Sincerely, Mrs Cooper’s Class
The Social Action Committee thanks ALL the students and parents who continue their Brovary mitzvot. Soon, they will have
their Passover matzoh while we remind them that Temple Emanu-El wishes them “Hag Sameyah!”

TEMPLE EMANU-EL: WHERE YOU BELONG
SmartBites bags are packed
by school-aged children
volunteers that come to the
Gleaners Kids Helping Kids®
program.
The SmartBites program provides 70 low-income neighborhood schools in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties
with healthful snacks to distribute to hungry students during the
school day or at after school tutoring programs. SmartBites bags
from Gleaners are filled with 30 items/bag including individual
packages of snacks like those listed above. The 30-item bags are
bundled in boxes to provide nutritional snacks for students for one
month.
Please bring donations of individual healthy snacks to the Temple
and deposit them in the Gleaners boxes in the lobby and school
entrance between April 8th & May 5th.
Donations (by check) are welcome too. Please make checks
payable to Temple Emanu-El (not Gleaners). Your contributions
allow Gleaners to purchase triple the number of individual-sized
healthy snacks from their Food Bank suppliers.

Please Participate in
Shabbat Worship
Members of the congregation are invited
to participate (with Hebrew and/or English
readings or non-reading roles) in upcoming Friday evening mand Shabbat morning
worship services. Please sign-up on the blue
sheet in the Rosen Foyer and Rabbi Klein
will contact you.
Calling all Congregants for
Rabbi's Party in June
As you know, our celebration for Rabbi Klein becoming
Rabbi Emeritus at Temple will take place on Saturday
evening, June 15, 2013, at 7 p.m. We would like to present
him with a collection of memories from
any and all members of our Temple
family. Your contribution may
be written, a single or group
of photos, or even DVD
clips. However, we would
like everything (except the
DVD clips) to be on the same type of paper so that we can
create a special memory book.
A downloadable template page will be available on the
website or you may pick up a hard copy in the Temple
office.
Please return your submission to Kelly Onickel’s office
no later than May 10. Please do not bend the pages. If
you need to mail your submission, please do it in a large
envelope - the pages will be 8 1/2 x 11 inches. For further
information, please contact Marcia or Michael Leibson at
248 967-0729 or at [email protected].
We know that Rabbi Klein will be happy to receive
memories from people of all ages!
