Thousands of blues lovers have flocked to the village’s Lime Kiln Park each year since 2006 for weekend celebrations featuring acoustic and electric performances and tributes to Grafton’s role in blues history. Are you ready for a blues weekend in Grafton? Welcome to the fifth annual Paramount Blues Festival! Well, we are back to September for this year’s event. Last year’s August festival taught us a lesson: Don’t mess with a good thing. You will find us on the third full weekend of September from now on. It’s hard to believe we are celebrating five years! We have come a long way in sharing Paramount history. This year we will be added to the Mississippi Blues Trail with a marker being placed in Grafton. Clarksdale, Memphis, Chicago ... and now Grafton. What an honor! We are working with the Village of Grafton and, at the time of this writing, plan to unveil the marker at the festival. While you’re in Grafton, be sure to visit the Paramount Plaza and see the fountain and the Walk of Fame. It’s also a great place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or food from one of the local businesses. Be sure to pick up a walking tour booklet in our merchandise area and take the tour of Grafton. I want to take a moment to thank the festival team — Peter, PK, Bradley, Bev, Cheryl, Jamie, Jason and Jeff work all year to put this weekend together, as well as all the other events we host. Without them, you would not be reading this. When you see them, stop and tell them what a great time you’re having. Membership in the Grafton Blues Association is growing. We have great supporters, including individuals, bands, venues and corporate members. This year we also welcomed lifetime members. Want more information? Visit the merchandise booth or e-mail us. Did you know we host events and programs in addition to the festival? Our Senior Blues program is very successful, and the Grafton Blues Challenge will be sending the Alex Wilson Band to Memphis in February 2011. We will also take a youth act, Sequoia & The Virgins. New this year, we will host the Grafton Solo/Duo Blues Challenge to determine who will represent us in that competition in Memphis. The Solo/Duo Challenge will take place Saturday, Oct. 16, at Circle B Recreation Center in the Town of Cedarburg. It’s a great time, so join us! By visiting our website — www.graftonblues.org — you can join our e-mail list and stay informed. We hope you enjoy the festival and changes we made this year. We want to hear from you, so send us your thoughts, compliments, suggestions and, yes, criticisms. The festival is held for YOU, so we need to know what you’d like to see, hear and eat. Have a wonderful weekend! Kris Raymond President, Grafton Blues Association The mission of the Grafton Blues Association is to encourage community involvement by sponsoring and hosting events, including a diverse realm of blues musicians, performers, entertainers, educators and historians. By promoting the Blues in the Schools programs, we will nurture an appreciation and understanding of blues music in general, its historical influence and importance as a watershed of American popular music, and its relevance to the history of Paramount recordings made in Grafton, Wis. /ZAUKEE#OUNTY´S.EWSPAPER PROUD SPONSOR OF 4HE 0ARAMOUNT Blues KAYSEN REALTY VALUATION COMPANY WISCONSIN AVE, GRAFTON WI 53024 262-377-6200 SPONSOR OF LIL’ ED & THE BLUES IMPERIALS’ PERFORMANCE INTEGRITY and RELIABILITY D&G promises to deliver what you need, when and where you need it. The group’s appealing and diverse repertoire has attracted a wide range of music fans throughout the Midwest. During the past year, the band has performed at numerous festivals, including Summerfest. Band members include Jenny Abbott, George Passint, 5:30 p.m. Friday 11:15 a.m. Saturday Maple Road Paramount Walk of Fame Inductions Big Bill Broonzy Randy Panas and Nick Casati. Maple Road’s new CD, “Ain’t Lookin’ Back,” is scheduled for release this summer. 6:45 p.m. Friday October Soul goes beyond blues. High energy by nature, they showcase their own original work along with a set list packed with country and rock. Sometimes unplugged, their acoustic work explodes with just as much intensity. Formed in October 2009, the Soul’s all-star lineup consists of multi-award-winning vocalist Jamie Brace, veteran guitarist Joe Barborich, bassist and vocalist Tony Bremer and October Soul percussionist/drummer Drew “Haystack” Humes. Joining the band for their festival performance will be guitarist Jared James Nichols. 8:00 p.m. Friday Aaron Williams & The Hoodoo Aaron Williams is what some in the music business refer to as a “career” artist — a dedicated, straight-talking guy more interested in longevity than a hit single, in building a fan base than winning an award. Zigzagging the Midwest and South, doing it the only way they know how, Aaron Williams & The Hoodoo spend 180 nights a year on the road. They headline most of those dates but have also played supporting slots for the Black Keys, Bernard Allison, Taj Mahal and many others, as well as festivals such as Summerfest and Bike Week in Daytona Beach. “It Ain’t Easy,” their debut album, is a tour de force of authenticity, covering blues, rock and roots. It’s music the way it was meant to be played. 9:15 p.m. Friday The Jimmys The Jimmys are a powerhouse eight-piece band influenced by raw Chicago blues to second-line New Orleans funk. With touring experience throughout the United States and Europe, The Jimmys have received international acclaim. Members of the band have garnered recognition ranging from Wisconsin’s top honors in blues to Grammy recognition to platinum records. This is a group that’s guaranteed to make you shake a tail feather! Two more music legends — William “Big Bill” Broonzy and Tommy Johnson — will join the Paramount Walk of Fame in Grafton this weekend. Both artists recorded for Paramount Records in the 1920s and ’30s and were chosen as the 2010 inductees by the village’s Historic Preservation Committee. Broonzy was a prolific singer, songwriter and guitarist whose folk-blues roots made him one of the most versatile musicians of his time. Johnson was an influential Delta bluesman known for his intricate guitar playing and falsetto voice. The Walk of Fame was established in 2006 as a tribute to Tommy Johnson Paramount recording artists. The names of the inductees are engraved in a keyboard-styled walkway in the downtown Paramount Plaza. Noon Saturday Joe Filisko & Eric Noden Sponsored by Columbia St. Mary’s Joe Filisko and Eric Noden’s first CD, “Live,” featured versions of early blues and roots songs by Sonny Terry, Daddy Stovepipe, Fred McDowell and Gwen Foster. The CD’s success led to several European tours as well as festival and workshop appearances throughout the United States. The duo’s new release, “I.C. Special,” continues to draw on American music from the 1920s and ’30s. All 15 tunes on the CD were written by either Joe or Eric, and each represents a different branch of American roots music. This new work brings them into a realm that embraces their influences while blending them together in unique ways. 3:30 p.m. Saturday Grana´ Louise 6:45 p.m. Saturday Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials Sponsored by D&G Transportation Any doubt about the lasting impact Grana´ Louise has on music lovers was dashed once and for all last November when the passionate singer and her band The Troublemakers received top honors at the Chicago Blues Challenge. A fixture on the city’s blues scene, Grana´ has established herself as an international force to be reckoned with. Her musical style has been described as a blend of Koko Taylor, Etta James, Denise LaSalle, Billie Holiday, Ruth Brown and Bessie Smith — with a dash of Tina Turner. Her CD “Generations” received wide acclaim as a showcase for her interpretation of root blues, jazz and R&B. The album included her original song “City Slicker Bill,” which was featured on the soundtrack of the motion picture “Justice.” Whether belting out the blues or performing opera, Grana´ inspires audiences. Her deep, emotive delivery propels the kind of music that transports listeners to a soulful world not soon forgotten. Although small in stature, Lil’ Ed Williams is a true giant of the blues and among the last authentic West Side Chicago bluesmen. Lil’ Ed boasts a direct bloodline to blues history. His uncle and musical mentor was the great Chicago slide guitarist and recording artist J.B. Hutto. On Lil Ed & The Blue Imperials’ new Alligator album, “Rattleshake,” the band produces a modern blues firestorm steeped in tradition. It’s a collaboration highlighted by Lil’ Ed’s romping, sizzling guitar and his rough-hewn vocals, his half-brother James “Pookie” Young’s thumping bass, Mike Garrett’s feral rhythm guitar and Kelly Littleton’s unpre- 1:00 p.m. Saturday Leroy Airmaster with guests Greg Koch & Jim Liban A fixture on the Milwaukee blues scene throughout the 1970s and ’80s, Leroy Airmaster disbanded in 1990 when band members pursued other interests. However, the group is back together again — older, wiser and more dedicated than ever to the pursuit of musical excellence. With a repertoire that includes hundreds of classic blues and rock tunes as well as original numbers, the band features Steve Cohen (harmonica), Bill Stone (guitar), Dave Kasik (bass) and Vodie Rhinehart (drums). Joining the four for their festival compatriots, guitarist Greg Koch and harmonicist Jim show will be two of their longtime musical Liban. 2:15 p.m. Saturday Robert Allen & The Zoot Suits with Cadillac Pete Robert Allen Jr. and the Zoot Suits — formerly known as the Zoot Suit Boogie Band — is a three-time WAMI nominee and winner of the 2001 award as Best Blues Artist. The Zoot Suits’ music features smooth vocal harmonies, fluid guitar solos, strolling and rolling bass lines and tempos in a perfect rhythmic pocket. The result is good-time, high-energy jump blues. One critic called it blues-a-billy boogie. Fronted by singer/guitarist Robert Allen Jr., the band puts on a dazzling show that is going to get you boogieing all night long. From 1930s and ’40s jump blues to ’50s rock ’n’ roll, churned with snaky Chicago blues and even modern pop dance grooves, the Zoot Suits lay down a special blend of bluesy swing boogie that never lets you go. “Blues guitar heroes are like a major hurricane that blows down everything in their path, changing the musical landscape as surely as category 5 tropical storms alter the terra firma. Since Stevie Ray Vaughan perished tragically in 1990, however, the winds of change have been brief squalls at best. Until now. If anyone has a legitimate shot at filling the blues guitar hero void, it is Dennis Jones.” — Dave Rubin, 2005 “Keeping the Blues Alive” award winner in journalism Born in Baltimore and now residing in Los Angeles, Dennis Jones first started on the drums, then switched to guitar at the age of 13. A serious blues rocker, his music is influenced by B.B., Albert and Freddie King, as well as the Rolling Stones, Johnny Winter, Dylan, Santana, James Brown and many other artists. After “Pleasure & Pain,” Jones’ 2009 CD release, received considerable airplay and critical acclaim around the globe, he quickly began his next mission — to expand his touring base outside the West Coast. A member of the Zac Harmon-led group named Best Unsigned Band at the International Blues Challenge, Jones knows the way to stardom and is wasting no time getting there. This is the first appearance of the Dennis Jones Band at the Paramount Blues Festival. dictable yet bone-crunching drumming. The Washington Post described Williams’ music as “contagious wildness.” The Philadelphia Inquirer expressed it as “raucous and hugely entertaining.” No matter how you describe it, Lil’ Ed’s seriously inspired music will take you on a fast trip from your chair to your feet. 8:30 p.m. Saturday 5:00 p.m. Saturday Dennis Jones Sponsored by Kaysen Realty Valuation Zac Harmon is a Paramount Blues Festival favorite. A serious musician with more than 20 years as a composer, producer and performer, he first came to the blues world’s attention by capturing the 2004 International Blues Challenge’s prestigious Best Unsigned Band award. The next year, Zac was named Best New Blues Artist in the XM (Satellite Radio) Nation Awards. In 2006, Blues Revue named him “One of 10 to Watch” and he won the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut for his sophomore release, “The Blues According to Zacariah.” In the past year, Zac’s third CD, “From the Root,” was released, the Jus’ Blues Foundation bestowed the Little Milton Award upon him for Outstanding Guitar Player and he was recognized for lifetime achieve- Zac Harmon ment in the music industry with a Jackson Music Award in his hometown of Jackson, Miss. More awards and recognition are sure to follow, but for Zac Harmon, there is no greater reward than taking to the stage and entertaining audiences worldwide. He and his band perform each time like it’s their last and are returning to Grafton for the fourth consecutive year, this time as a headliner. When asked about coming back this year, Zac responded, “The people from Grafton have been real good and very loyal to us, and we sincerely appreciate it. Please be there on Sept. 18 so we can thank you properly!” Mark Your Calendar for Next Year! 2011 PARAMOUNT BLUES FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 16 & 17 Welcome to Grafton, where Paramount rocked the blues cradle From 1929 to 1932, Grafton’s Paramount Records studio was located in the Wisconsin Chair Co. factory, two blocks north of the festival grounds. Legendary blues artists such as Skip James, Charley Patton, Son House, Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy, Tommy Johnson and Henry Townsend recorded here. As the lasting living blues musician to record in Grafton, the 96-year-old Townsend returned to the village in 2006 for the first time in more than 70 years to perform at the inaugural Paramount Blues Festival. He died tragically before appearing at the event and was posthumously inducted the same weekend into the downtown Paramount Walk of Fame, which honors artists whose legacies have become enduring parts of the community’s musical heritage. The festival stage is named in Townsend’s memory. A Mississippi Blues Trail marker will soon be placed in Grafton to commemorate the community’s role in American music history. The marker, which is expected to be unveiled at this year’s festival, will underscore the link between the Delta roots of blues artists and the Paramount Records plant where their music was preserved for future generations. Festival offers special events for young blues fans Blues music isn’t just for grown-ups.
