Les Standiford
Water to the Angels: William Mulholland,
His Monumental Aqueduct, and the Rise
of Los Angeles
Les Standiford is the bestselling author of 20 books
and novels, including the John Deal mystery series, and
the works of narrative history, The Man Who Invented
Christmas; a New York Times Editor’s Choice; and Last
Train to Paradise. He is the director of the creative
writing program at Florida International University
in Miami, where he lives with his wife, Kimberly, a

Paula McLain was born in Fresno, California in 1965.
After being abandoned by both parents, she and her
two sisters became wards of the California Court
System, moving in and out of various foster homes for
the next 14 years. When she aged out of the system,
she supported herself by working as a nurse’s aid in
a convalescent hospital, a pizza delivery girl, an autoplant worker, a cocktail waitress–before discovering
she could (and very much wanted to) write. She
received her MFA in poetry from the University of
Michigan in 1996.
She is the author of The Paris Wife, a New York Times
and international bestseller, which has been published
in 34 languages. Paula McLain is the recipient of
fellowships from Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, the
Cleveland Arts Prize, the Ohio Arts Council and the
National Endowment for the Arts. She is also the
author of two collections of poetry, a memoir, Like
Family, Growing up in Other People’s Houses, and a
first novel, A Ticket to Ride. She lives with her family
in Cleveland.

Kim van Alkemade was born in New York. Her creative
nonfiction has appeared in literary journals including
Alaska Quarterly Review, So to Speak, and CutBank.
She teaches writing at Shippensburg University of
Pennsylvania.

Katy Simpson Smith was born and raised in Jackson,
Mississippi. She attended Mount Holyoke College
and received a Ph.D. in history from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.F.A. from the
Bennington Writing Seminars. She has published a
study of early American motherhood, We Have Raised
All of You: Motherhood in the South, 1750-1835, as
well as the novel, The Story of Land and Sea. She lives
in New Orleans.

Meg Waite Clayton is the New York Times bestselling
author of four novels: The Four Ms. Bradwells;
The Wednesday Sisters (recently named one of
Entertainment Weekly’s “Essential Best Friends
Novels”); The Language of Light (a finalist for the
Bellwether Prize); and The Wednesday Daughters.
She has written for the Los Angeles Times, The New
York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle,
Forbes, Writer’s Digest, Runner’s World, and public
radio. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law
School, she lives in Palo Alto, California.

Dolen Perkins-Valdez is the author of The New
York Times bestselling novel Wench. O, The Oprah
Magazine, chose it as a Top Ten Pick of the Month,
and NPR named it a top five book club pick of 2010.
She wrote the introduction for Twelve Years a Slave
by Solomon Northrup, the book that inspired the
major motion picture, and her fiction has appeared in
The Kenyon Review, StoryQuarterly, StorySouth, and
elsewhere. In 2011, she was a finalist for two NAACP
Image Awards and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award
for fiction. She was also awarded the First Novelist
Award by the Black Caucus of the American Library
Association and has received a DC Commission on
the Arts Grant. Dolen teaches in the Stonecoast
MFA program. A graduate of Harvard and a former
University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow
at UCLA, she lives in Washington, DC with her family.

Joanna Campbell Slan
Back by popular demand, Joanna Campbell Slan is an award-winning writer with

Jackie Williams
Jackie Williams retired as a writer/producer from MCTV Channel 20 in 2008. She continues, as a volunteer, to produce and host the station’s “Pets on Parade” show, done
in collaboration with the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. She now works as a
freelance writer. For 25 years, Williams has been and continues as the senior writer for
the Jupiter Island News, that is distributed to residents of the Town of Jupiter Island.
She is the author of one book, Playing from the Rough: The Women of the LPGA Hall
of Fame. She shares her home with Lily, an 11-year-old border collie she adopted from
the Humane Society.
