Education and training have helped Sreymom transform from an
inexperienced young midwife into a confident healthcare worker.
Now she has the skills to provide vital healthcare, support and
information to indigenous mothers and children in the beautiful,
remote Mondulkiri province of Northeast Cambodia.
When people have clean water,
nutritious food, sanitation and health
care they are able to live healthy
lives. Due to extreme poverty,
indigenous people in the beautiful
province of Mondulkiri in Cambodia
face complex health issues as a
result of a lack of clean drinking
water, irregular food supplies, poor
sanitation and few health services.
Caritas Australia, together with local
partner Caritas Cambodia, is helping
communities tackle the important
issue of health care.
Sreymom, 26, a trained midwife,
started work at the Health Centre in
Mondulkiri province to help care for
indigenous mothers and children in
the surrounding villages.
Even though she was qualified
to deliver babies, she had little
experience. “When I had to assist
a delivery,” Sreymom recalls, “my
body and knees were trembling. I was
sweating and losing confidence.”
Sreymom enrolled in the Mondulkiri
Community Health Program
established by Caritas Cambodia
and supported by Caritas Australia
to help train, support and empower
local health workers.
She learned new techniques to
improve the health of mothers and
babies during pregnancy, childbirth
and infancy. She also received
coaching from an experienced
midwife on the best way to deliver
babies safely.
Not only did Sreymom improve her
skills but she gained knowledge to
share with the communities. “It is
very important to share knowledge
with others,” she says. “I am happy
when a villager applies what they have
learned.”
Sreymom now delivers one or two
babies each month, and has gained
the trust of the indigenous mothers
in the community. “Sreymom took
care of my health before and during
delivery,” says Peub, a mother of five.
Today, the program continues to train
healthcare workers who empower
local indigenous communities to
improve their health and wellbeing.
Education and training have helped
Sreymom transform from an
inexperienced young midwife into
a confident healthcare worker. She
provides vital healthcare, support
and information to indigenous
mothers and children in remote
Northeast Cambodia.
When you support Project
Compassion, you, Sreymom
Caritas Australia and Caritas
Cambodia are working together for
improved health care in indigenous
communities in Cambodia.
