Founded in 1896 by social reformers Maud
and Ballington Booth, Volunteers of America is a
national, faith-based nonprofit whose mission is to reach
and uplift all people and bring them to the knowledge
and active service of God.
Volunteers of America meets people where they are,
helping individuals and families develop the tools to be
self-reliant. We work toward this goal by developing
programs and services to address the root causes of
homelessness and poverty, and uplift our neighbors in
need, whether they are just starting on their journey, or
are already on the road to recovery.

Emergency Shelters
Volunteers of America operates emergency shelters for
homeless families, men and women in Sacramento and
Reno, NV. These shelters keep clients
safe from harm while providing
resources and solutions that will move
them toward more stable futures. These
services include case management,
employment counseling and job referrals,
permanent housing referrals, life-skills
coaching, and more. For the individuals
and families we serve, these shelters are a
first step in ending the cycle of poverty.
Homeless individuals living with AIDS or who are HIVpositive face unique challenges. In Sacramento, Volunteers
of America provides emergency shelter, life-skills and
employment coaching, permanent housing referrals,
medication management classes and more to individuals
living with AIDS or who are
HIV-positive. These services help
individuals see themselves as
productive community members
with a world of possibilities before
them.
Volunteers of America protects
vulnerable seniors who are victims of abuse, neglect and/or
exploitation. At the Sacramento Senior Safe House, guests
62 years and older can rest, relax and stabilize from the
trauma they experienced often at the hands of a caregiver.
Staff and volunteers provide meals, laundry services,
companionship and transportation as they transition into
permanent safe and appropriate housing.
Affordable Housing
Throughout northern California
and northern Nevada, Volunteers of
America offers affordable housing for
low-income seniors and families. In
addition to stable housing, residents
have access to a variety of other
community resources, helping these
individuals and families lead lives that are as self-sufficient
as possible.
S u b s t a n c e A b u s e Tre a t m e n t
Addiction plays an integral role for many struggling to leave
homelessness. In Sacramento, we offer
residential substance abuse treatment
for parenting women, and out-patient
treatment with transitional housing
for families working to overcome
addiction. In addition to recovery
services, clients take parenting classes,
life-skills workshops, and receive ongoing case-management
and employment counseling. Together, these services empower
families to pursue healthy, drug-free futures.
Ve t e r a n s S e r v i c e s
Recognizing the specific needs of those who served our country,
Volunteers of America provides specialized programs for
homeless and at-risk veterans and their families
in the greater Sacramento area. These services
provide rapid re-housing, rent and utility
assistance, intensive case-management, and
focus heavily on increasing our veteran men’s
and women’s employment possibilities.
Re-Entr y Ser vices
In Sacramento and the Bay Area, men
leaving incarceration face a wide variety
of challenges. Volunteers of America in
Sacramento and the Bay Area provide a
variety of services to help these individuals
start new, healthy lives, significantly
reducing recidivism. These services enrich
the lives of the men we serve through
education, employment counseling, job training, parenting
classes, life-skills workshops and more. At the same time, our
community is improved by helping men transform into better
husbands, fathers, employees and neighbors.
C o m p re h e n s i v e J o b
Development and Housing
Sacramento individuals and families leaving homelessness
behind receive intensive, comprehensive employment
counseling, job referrals and ongoing job coaching through
Volunteers of America. Combined with stable housing, ongoing
case management and support, financial literacy workshops and
more, students develop the tools to lead independent lives and
serve as positive role models for their families.
Yo u t h S e r v i c e s
In the Bay Area, Volunteers of America provides
foster youth with mentors, life-skills education, college
scholarships, and a variety of supportive services. Combined,
we empower foster youth to pursue
their educational and employment
dreams that may have been out of
reach or forgotten.
In Sacramento, former foster
youth, ages 18-24, who are facing
homelessness receive employment
counseling and referrals, life-skills and parenting classes,
child development classes, financial literacy, access to
health and therapeutic resources and transitional housing.
Combined, these services help former foster youth lead
successful, self-reliant lives.
E m p l o y m e n t Tr a i n i n g
Volunteers of America kitchens serve more than 551,150
meals each year in Sacramento and the Bay Area, including
daily meal service for clients, catering
for program events, and festive
holiday meals to capture the warmth
of family traditions. In addition,
Sacramento area kitchens provide
valuable job-skills training, including:
food service safety and sanitation,
proper use of equipment and kitchen protocols, meal
preparation and commercial kitchen management, clients
gain valuable skills, providing a solid basis for employment.
In Sacramento, Volunteers of America programs span
dozens of facility sites, which are cared for by our own
maintenance crews. These crews also provide on-the-job
training for clients working to leave addiction and poverty
for good. Clients learn facility management skills including
painting, electrical and plumbing repairs, landscaping and
more. This training gives clients marketable skills that help
maintain employment for years to come.
Supportive Housing
Volunteers of America provides permanent supportive
housing for adults with disabilities in the Sacramento area.
With customized levels of care, these individuals receive
help finding and maintaining employment, gain access
to other community resources and are able to lead more
independent lives.
