You can still explore Florida the way it used to be. Stroll miles of white sand and wade in emerald water
without another soul in sight. Watch dolphins frolic as pelicans glide silently by.
Or stake a claim beside a beachfront hotel where a cool drink and succulent food are but sandy steps
away. Snorkel, fish for pompano, paddleboard, build the castle of your dreams, try surfing or just laze
away the day.

Sandy Facts
• The white sand of our beaches comes from quartz, the bones of the
Appalachian Mountains far to the north, washing down the region’s rivers to
the sea over millions of years.
• Soft and powdery, the sand is very fine-grained and is called “singing sand”
because it squeaks underfoot.
• Sand dunes topped with sea oats are a vital part of the ecosystem and help
protect our barrier islands from waves and weather.
With an average 340 days of sun,

• Perdido is Spanish for “lost,” which makes a lot of sense
to our visitors who love to lose themselves in our
breathtaking beaches, relaxed pace and distinctive
personality.
• The Perdido pitcher plant is one of only two carnivorous
plants in the world.
• The Perdido Key Beach Mouse, an endangered species,
was almost wiped out in the mid-1990s by Hurricanes
Erin and Opal, but since then its numbers have grown.
The Perdido Key Beach Mouse can be seen meandering

The Great Outdoors
By Sea
Bay, cove, bayou or beach, the Pensacola Bay Area is a world of water.
Sailors love our constant breezes and sandy, forgiving bottoms. A quick
trip by motorboat can carry you to a seemingly forgotten beach. Cruises
acquaint you with the friendly, intelligent dolphins that share our world.
With one of the longest fishing piers on the Gulf of Mexico, it’s easy
to cast for amberjack, red fish or cobia. Charter boats can take you far
offshore, to the edges of the deep blue where the marlin dwell. Sight cast
on coastal flats or surf cast along miles of empty beach. For any angler,
Pensacola is the ultimate catch.

Pet Lovers
Events For Pets
Even pets can enjoy Mardi Gras, a favorite festival season along the Gulf Coast. The Krewe of
Junkanoo Kritter Krawl takes place each year on Pensacola Beach. October’s Barktoberfest is the
main fund-raiser for the Humane Society. Dogs enjoy a day of eating, playing, getting their
portraits made and competing in contests.
Dog Parks
Pet Travel Tips
• The Bayview Dog Park and Beach is a
favorite East Hill neighborhood spot
overlooking Bayou Texar. Dogs have one
acre to run and play, plus their very own
beach where they can splash around.
• Located on Summit Boulevard near
Pensacola International Airport, dogs can run
around at Roger Scott Complex Dog Park.
• Shoreline Bark Park, near Shoreline Park in
Gulf Breeze, is an enclosed facility with a
separate section for smaller dogs.
1. Bring along a list of veterinary clinics.
2. Ensure your pet is current on all vaccinations –
many airlines require documentation.
3. Travel during quiet times of the day to help your
pet remain calm.
4. Take frequent exercise breaks for your pet.
5. Travel with your pet in a carrier or seatbelt.
6. Pack snacks, travel-sickness pills and plenty of water.
7. Never leave your pet unattended in the car.
8. See pages 42-53 for pet-friendly outdoor dining
and lodging.
