Northern Virginia Association of Rocketry Free Press June – August 2004 THREE GREAT MONTHS! THREE GREAT EVENTS! ONE GREAT CLUB! A Team America rocket makes a perfect lift-off at the May Flyoffs (Photo by Greg Bock) Worried about the downwash from an incoming helicopter, some members of the range crew hold rockets on the launch pads to prevent them from being blown over at NOVAAR’s Fourth of July Demo. As it turned out, it wasn’t the wind caused by the helicopter that ultimately “did in” the demo, but Mother Nature herself. The demo was canceled only eight rockets into the launch, because the wind direction had the rockets drifting over the large crowd. (Photo by Mitch Guess.) NOVAAR has been an active club hosting the 2004 Team America Event in May, the annual 4th of July demo launch at Great Meadow, and NARAM 46 in August. All this in addition to hosting the usual monthly sport launches, leading building sessions for elementary schools and working with the AIA at Space Day. This issue covers a lot of territory, and it’s difficult to include everything in a single issue. After five years of being the club’s newsletter editor, this issue will be my last. When I took over the newsletter, my first issue had a “NARAM 41 Champs!” on the cover with a group picture of the club members who attended that meet in Pittsburg. Trip Barber and the late Gary Kinnamon were holding the section flag and Jim Brower the NARAM 41 trophy the club had just won. Five years is a long time to be doing any type of job. I’ve enjoyed doing it. I especially want to thank all of those club members, who over the years took time to share their rocketry hobby by writing articles and submitting plans and pictures for the newsletter. Your newsletter is only as good as the club members that support it. Frank Prekel has volunteered to take over as the Free Press editor, and we’ll do the next issue jointly transitioning the editor job. Please support Frank as you have done so with me. Remember – this is YOUR newsletter. Once again, thanks to everyone, and good luck, Frank. THREE GREAT EVENTS IN 3 MONTHS!! FLY WITH THE BEST! FLY WITH NOVAAR! 2 Northern Virginia Association of Rocketry President’s Corner By John Hochheimer At the recent NOVAAR election of officers, Trip Barber and I switched positions; Trip stepped down as President of NOVAAR to become Secretary and I, John Hochheimer, switched from Secretary to President. Trip leaves behind quite a legacy of leadership and service to NOVAAR. We sure have grown in the three years that he has held the office of President. The next time you see Trip, thank him for all his hard work and dedication. NOVAAR is surely a better organization as a result of his leadership. I still remember the first NOVAAR meeting that I attended. It was about 5 years ago and I was totally new to model rocketry. Those present greeted me enthusiastically. The most pressing topic at the meeting was a discussion of the selection of contest events for an upcoming meet. As I tried to follow along, the conversation was rapidly getting above my head--contest factors, ELD, ½ A PD, altitude, my head was spinning. Some members at the meeting were also concerned about how much longer the Manassas Battlefield would be available for launches. Then, in true NOVAAR fashion, a very memorable thing happened. Bart Merkley pulls up a chair beside me and started to explain the meeting and happenings. Bart helped in many ways, I started to understand the discussion and, more importantly, made me feel welcome to the group. What is my point you ask? Well, I am still amazed with the spirit and genuine camaraderie that is the essence of NOVAAR. Every time NOVAAR members become involved in something, this spirit lives on. The events over the past year stick in my mind about how NOVAAR continues to evolve, at least in the relatively short time that I have been a member. This past year has been very active for NOVAAR. We have held sport and contest launches at Great Meadow on a monthly basis. High power rocketry is still gaining momentum among NOVAAR members and we enjoy one of the best flying fields in the East. NOVAAR proudly serves as the local host to the Team America Rocketry Challenge. What a boost this has been to aerospace education and the hobby of rocketry. NOVAAR also hosted a very successful NARAM, the national championship for model rocketry competition. Thanks go to Jonathan Rains and Charlie Sykos for leading us in this memorable event. NOVAAR helped with countless rocketry educational programs at schools throughout Northern Virginia. Greg Bock, Joe Woodford, and many others have spent many June - August 2004 hours helping with educational programs. The list could go on. Every launch seems to bring out more new faces and, most often, we see familiar faces. We see young and old launching rockets. Where else can you see legends in model rocketry like Ken Brown, John Langford, and Trip Barber launching rockets with that ever present gleam in their eye and smile on their faces when their rocket launches. How rewarding is it to see a 4 year old jumping and cheering when her first rocket launches successfully. Even more rewarding is seeing her at the next launch with that same level of enthusiasm. At the recent August sport launch, we witnessed numerous RC rocket and boost gliders pilots launching their models. Rob Edmonds’ designs are rapidly gaining in popularity. Will we see RC equipment regularly at future launches? At a recent NOVAAR meeting, we voted to purchase two high power kits to build as a club. Who knows what the future of high power rocketry will be? I can assure you though; these two rockets will be the pride of NOVAAR. Will this new adventure bring about more group projects? I certainly hope so. I have already received several emails about potential designs and ideas. I seek your help to enable NOVAAR to maintain this high level of service to the rocketry hobby and to help us grow in new areas. A few good members can’t do it all. There are many ways you can contribute. We continue to need members to help set up and run our launches. Come to the meetings. Participate in the business discussions. Most importantly, bring your stories, ideas, and skills to share with others. Above all else, remember to enjoy your hobby of rocketry. Bring your rockets, big and small, to the launches and make sure you take the time to launch them. FLY WITH THE BEST! FLY WITH NOVAAR! 3 Northern Virginia Association of Rocketry June - August 2004 Space Day at Udvar-Hazey Center By Joe Woodford and Greg Bock NOVAAR was one of almost 40 organizations participating in the Space Day activities held on May 6th at the UdvarHazy Center. The purpose of Space Day is to show elementary school students displays and activities that will interest them in the space sciences. This year over 1200 students participated in the event which included talks by Senator John Glenn, the introduction of a new astronaut class and activity stations and information booths ranging from building your own hovercraft and SR-71 to NASA’s own Mobile Aeronautics Laboratory. NOVAAR was there as part of the Aerospace Industries Association Team America Rocketry Challenge station. Nicole Towle, from the Aerospace Industries Association along with Joe Woodford and Greg Bock from NOVAAR set up a display and answered questions about Team America, the NAR and model rocketry. Students from Oakton, HS in Vienna displayed their Team America Rocket entry and explained its operation to a continuing stream of elementary school students, their teachers and parents. Oakton was one of the one of the top schools in the country to attend the fly-offs. The AIA/NAR Display at the Udvar-Hazey Center on Space Day in May shows two Team America entries from Oakton High School. The NAR display and some models are shown on the right. (Photo by Greg Bock) Joe and Greg bought along some of their own models to display and discuss the finer points of model rocket operation. Students, teachers and parents were given brochures describing the 2005 Team America Challenge along with NAR literature, NOVAAR club brochures and copies of Sport Rocketry Magazine. The effort resulted in a follow-up visits to Barrett Elementary School in Arlington for a building session and launch. (l to r) Greg Bock, Nicole Towle and JoeWoodford. FLY WITH NOVAAR! 4 Northern Virginia Association of Rocketry Rockets in Arlington Joe Woodford and Greg Bock In June, Joe Woodford and Greg Bock hosted a building session and launch at Barrett Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia. Ms. Laurie Sullivan, the Project Discovery Teacher at Barrett Elementary School in Arlington asked NOVAAR to assist her and three other 5th grade teachers with a rocket building session and launch during the last week of school. Joe and Greg had met Ms. Sullivan at on May 6th at the “Space Day” activities at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum. The event spanned two days-- building on one day and launching a few days later. The class comprised of about fifty enthusiastic 5th graders. The class was divided into two groups of 25 students with a pair of students building a single rocket. After a brief introduction and overview of model rocketry in the library, Joe and Greg each took a class, and instructed them in the finer points of building the Pratt Hobbies “Super Six” kit. The students were sharp, and picked up the assembly very well. (The Super Six is a great rocket to use in building sessions, since it goes together quickly, and can be flown on a variety of motors. The streamer recovery system works well in small fields, and the use of nomex to protect the recovery system from the motor ejection heat makes prepping it simple.) Launching the rockets would pose the biggest challenge. The field at Barrett Elementary is very small, bounded on thee sides by heavily traveled roads and residential homes on the 4th side. To prevent the rockets from leaving the school grounds, we decided to use ½ A6-2 motors. We used the old NOVAAR launch system with about half a dozen launch heads and green stakes. We divided the students into three groups and held a rocket prep session before going out to the field. All the rockets worked well with no fins stripped and no motor mount failures. As a finale Joe launched Ms. Sullivan’s super six with a full A motor, and the students loved it. This automatically led to questions by the students on why her rocket went higher. The Arlington School System Science Superintendent stopped by the building session. It was a great way for the 5th graders to end their elementary years. The students sent us thank you notes along with some great questions about rockets. Here are a few of the questions: What is the speed of most rockets? How much thrust weight is in a rocket? What is the capacity of a real rocket? Which motors make rockets go higher? We also passed out some Team June - August 2004 America flyers and some NOVAAR brochures and membership applications. The article below appeared in the July 2004 issue of Executive Update. Carl gave your newsletter editor a copy of the magazine. The scanned article is below. --Editor THREE GREAT EVENTS IN 3 MONTHS!! FLY WITH NOVAAR! 6 Northern Virginia Association of Rocketry THE SPRING BATTLE PARK LAUNCH – 1-2 May 2004 By Greg Bock Tripoli Central (#25) and Tripoli East (#82) hosted the Battle Park Spring Launch on 1-2 May 2004. Several members from NOVAAR attended the launch on Saturday. (Ted Phipps, Don Hooker, Jim Gearhart, Jeff Perry and Greg Bock.) The launch field was great! It was a farm just off Rt. 15 in Culpepper, VA. The field had lots of “easy walking” recovery area for those big rockets. Ken Allen from Performance Hobbies was there, and several club members, me included, stocked up on great rocket kits and motors. June - August 2004 IV survived, I decided the model was worth painting. Throughout the afternoon, thunderclouds began building up over the launch area, and around 4PM it started raining. Rain started to move in around. Several of us came back for more on Sunday, but found the field deserted. With lots of rain on Saturday evening, and the muddy conditions on the field, the club had to cancel Sunday’s activities. In any event, this was a great launch, and I recommend attending the Fall Battle Park Launch scheduled for 29-31 October 2004. Just point your browser to the website below for more details. http://www.colonialvirginiahpr.org/virginia.html A Scale Model ARCAS?? Heck No!!! It’s the real thing. The Culpepper club proudly displayed this real life Atlantic Research Corporation ARCAS sounding rocket. “NOVAAR’s Own” Ted Phipps is all smiles as he get ready to launch his first scratch built hybrid motor rocket. Ted Phipps made a maiden flight with his first scratch built rocket specifically designed for hybrids. It flew twice that day, first on a RATTworks H70, then on a RATTworks I80. The rocket used a GWiz altimeter for ‘chute deployment. Deployment worked well on the rocket’s first flight, but didn’t happen on the second flight and she was a total loss. A Bumper – WAC. The V-2 portion was powered by a Kmotor and the WAC on top by an Aerotech F50. I made a maiden flight on my unpainted LOC Viper IV using 4 D12-5 motors. The flight was so great, even though only 3 of the 4 motors in the cluster ignited. Since the Viper THREE GREAT EVENTS IN 3 MONTHS!! FLY WITH THE BEST!
