Dues are $30 ! ! 1st Vice Commander Mark Herman reported that Post 16 membership for 2013 stands at 436 paid up members for 107%. The membership year runs from January 1st to December 31st each year. PUFL (Paid Up For Life) membership is available on the time payment plan, Ask about it! We’ve made 100% but still have many members that have not paid 2014 dues. We ask that you continue to support Post 16 with your dues. This will help to keep Post 16 as one of the strongest Post in Louisiana. American Legion Post Targeted by the IRS Auditors with the IRS reportedly are starting to fine Legion posts around the country for not keeping records of veterans’ DD-214s, the separation document given by the military to prove honorable service, or other valid documentation. This fine is $1000 a day. We need your help to get these documents. Please help the Post by making sure you have a copy on file in the office. Burns American Legion Post 16 held its membership drawing at the December 3rd meeting and the winner was Caz Alvarez. Mr. Alvarez was unavailable to get a photo in time for the newsletter. Commander James Lacassagne and Finance Officer Mike Peats will present Mr. Alvarez a $50 gift card as soon as possible. Page 2 Commander’s Remarks: I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. I hope that all of you remembered to thank the One who gave us all of the good things that we enjoy. I also want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas, and if I don't see you before, Happy New Year! In December, we have had several events: The Pearl Harbor Day Breakfast on Saturday the 7th, at the Post, The Special Needs Christmas Party on the 7th, The Adult Christmas Party on the 14th, and the Christmas Bingo on the 25th. I hope that you were able to participate in some of those. We are starting the New Year with our traditional New Year's Eve Party. That should be a great time for all. Entry will be $10.00 PER PERSON. Come on along and bring some friends. In January the Cub Scouts will hold their Pinewood Derby. That sounds like a lot of fun. Also in January is the Midwinter Conference in Metairie on the 17th, 18th, and 19th. January is also the time for the 4H/FFA Livestock Auction and the Southeast District Livestock Show at the Fairgrounds. Post 16 will be involved in both of these. Now that you have an idea of what is planned, why not join us at one of these activities. We could also use help at our Bingo Sessions on Wednesday Nights and Friday Mornings. It would be great to see some new faces. I also want to congratulate Squadron 16 Commander Ethan Sharp and his wife Angle Sharp on the birth of their son. I'll be looking for you at the January 7th meeting. Dinner is at 6:00 PM and the meeting starts at 7:00 PM. Again, Happy New Year! The Post Honor Guard represents all veterans in this area. Families of veterans need to be informed of our services. The Honor Guard will meet on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 5:00 PM at the Post. The Honor Guard continues to accept new members who are willing to spend the time and effort required to perform requested duties. “We invite you to come join us”. Pearl Harbor Breakfast On Saturday December 7 Post 16 hosted our annual Pearl Harbor breakfast with 35 people attending. We had several World War II veterans attend. We also had several Korean War veterans, Vietnam War veterans and veterans from more recent wars and conflicts. Breakfast was prepared by James Fitzmorris, John Scallan and Louis Badon. Many thanks to these three guys for volunteering to cook for the past few years. Post 16 gave a gift to the oldest and the youngest WWII veterans and Korean veterans. WWII Veterans: Korean Veterans: Emil Johansen and William Rosevally Ruben Sharp, Terry Sharp and Austin Sharp Needy Family Christmas Robert H. Burns American Legion visited six Needy Families this year. There were 17 Children in the six families. The Legion family spent about $1,400 on the 6 families this year. Burns, American Legion Post 16 Family of Covington hosted its annual Christmas Party for Special Needs Children and Adults at the Post Home. Eighty special needs participants along with children and grandchildren of Post 16 Family members were in attendance. Hotdogs with chili, potato chips, cookies, and soft drinks were served. Christmas cookies were decorated, games were played, a sing-a-long contest and Santa treated all with story time “The Little Toy Soldier.” Gifts were presented to all by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Commander Ethan Sharp: The Sons of The American Legion The holidays are over and I hope everyone had a Marry Christmas and Happy New Year. We should be voting on the Squadron Constitution and Bylaws at the next meeting on January 8. We recently voted to make our donation to the NEF, Child Welfare and the Legacy Scholarship fund at the up coming Mid-Winter Conference. Squadron 16 is at 100% for 2014,this was a team effort so thanks for all the hard work. We can still use help at the bingo sessions to support our post that supports us. Ethan Sharp Page 5 Post 16 Adult Christmas Party On December 14 the post held our annual adult Christmas party and pot luck dinner. The turkey and ham was provided by the Post 16 while everyone attending brought a side dish that made for a great meal. After the meal everyone had fun playing a game of dirty Santa. There were plenty of gifts that got swiped and traded. There was plenty of fun and laughing by all. La Societe Des 40 Hommes Et 8 Chevaux Voiture Locale 224 Fellow Voyageurs, On Thursday, December 12, 2013, Voiture 224 and MOPH Northshore Chapter 741 held a joint Christmas Party at the Post 16 home. After enjoying Christmas music and a potluck dinner featuring turkey and ham, we were visited by an Elf (Terry Sharp) from the Enchanted Forest who had a small gift for everyone present. The 30th Annual Cajun Wreck will be held February 27- March 2, 2014 in Lafayette. Voiture 224 is organizing a live production of the Tableau of the Unknown Soldier. This is an important part of the Wreck Ceremony. Any Voyageurs interested in taking part or just want to find out more this ceremony please contact me. Rooms for the Wreck will need to be reserved soon if you plan to go.
