The HBASE operates as effectively as it does thanks to the involvement
of our members. Each year, the efforts of our members ranges from
committee involvement to volunteering at major events to assisting
with HBASE sponsored community projects.
The HBASE is currently taking nominations for Hall of Fame, Associate
of the Year, Builder of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. These awards
are just one way we recognize the involvement of our members. The
winners of these awards will be announced in December.
Candidates for Builder, Associate and Volunteer of the Year need to
be members in good standing for a minimum of three years and have
displayed actions and commitments that promoted the goals of the HBA
and the advancement of the industry. These individuals have given an
extraordinary time commitment and dependability to the association.
The Housing Hall of Fame is an award program that honors individuals
who have made significant and lasting local, state and/or national
contributions to the housing industry. This award honors a lifelong
commitment to the advancement of the home building industry.
Please call the HBASE office to nominate a member that
you feel is deserving of one of these awards.

SHAPE PLACES
ORDINANCE IN
EFFECT
On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, the Shape
Places Zoning Ordinance earned
65 percent support. On Tuesday,
April 15, the Sioux Falls City Council
canvased the election results. With
these two actions, the Shape Places
Zoning Ordinance became effective
Wednesday, April 16.
Shape Places ordinance defines and
develops land or “places.” The ordinance takes into consideration that
zoning matters, and gives property
owners more rights and more options.
There isn’t an immediate impact to
existing properties in Sioux Falls upon adoption of Shape Places. Property development rights don’t change,
property taxes don’t change, and
property values don’t change. If and
when citizens want to expand or redevelop their property (as it was before April 16), they will need to comply with the zoning ordinances that
are in effect.

The Remodeling Council of the Sioux Empire
spent the day on April 23 to help out at the
Charity Home by building a large wooden
deck off of the back of the house.
There were a total of 12 volunteers that came together to
complete the project. Wood and other materials for the deck
were provided by Lowe’s. Thank you all for your help!

2014 SCHOLARSHIP
RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED
The Home Builders Care Foundation has
announced the selection of scholarship
recipients for the 2013-2014 academic
year. Each scholarship recipient will
receive a scholarship ranging from $500
to $1,000. Recipients will be attending a
technical institution or university
and major in a construction related field.
Scholarships are provided by the Sioux
Empire Home Builders Care Foundation,
the charitable arm of the HBASE.

The Sioux Empire Home Builders
Care Foundation will host the 21st
annual HBASE Repair Affair Day on
Tuesday, June 10 (rain date: June 17).
Repair Affair is a community service
project designed to assist the elderly and/
or permanently disabled with their accessibility needs, which in turn, allows them
to stay in their homes longer.
The Repair Affair Coordinating Committee has approved eight projects for
this year’s event. Projects include wheelchair ramps, handrails, grabs bars, replacing
a tub with a walk-in shower, replacing hardware knobs with levers, threshold ramps,
replacing faucets and more.
Special thanks to over 60 volunteers
who have signed up to help. All volunteers will receive a reminder prior to
event with the project they have been
assigned to work.
Breakfast will be served at the job locations that morning. Lunch will be served
at Cherry Rock Park at Noon (near 18th
St. & Southeastern Ave.).
