PRESIDENT'S LETTER Upcoming Events Visit our website at: http:// www.theboykinspanielclub.com/ html/events.html Dear Members, There is so much to report since the last newsletter! For upcoming AKC Events visits : Shortly after the August Newsletter went out, you should have gotten an email blast passing along the word from the AKC that they recognize us as the proper board of the Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America, Inc, the AKC Parent Club for the Boykin Spaniel. Hopefully that ended our year plus nightmare. In any case with the AKC's decision the board was released to start moving along with AKC activities and we have done so. The AKC website was updated in many areas and we filed to begin submitting and receiving numerous records and reports. Hopefully these will assist members in researching the breed and allow us to better report on successes within the breed. The American Kennel Club Offers Tips on Combating Pet Odor in the Home Do you keep your dog and your home nice and clean, but have been noticing some bad pet odors recently? There are some places around your house where these odors are hiding that you might not even realize. The American Kennel Club (AKC®) reveals where these foul smells could be hidden and what you can do to get rid of them. Your pet's bed. To keep pet odors from Fido's bed, wash bed coverings and blankets weekly. It'll be easier to get this done if you keep a spare set. Also, periodically move the bed and mop underneath it. The crate. Frequently sweep or vacuum the crate to keep smells from building up, and wash it out monthly. Pillows around the house. If your dog likes to lounge around on pillows, slip washable pillowcases on them so they can be easily removed for you to clean. Fido's toy box. Wash or replace old toys occasionally. Also vacuum or wash the empty box. Make sure not to put toys back while they are damp. Your dog's favorite hiding spots. Many dogs like to hide treats or food and sometimes forget about them. Check under furniture for Fido's forgotten stash that might very well be causing odors. Carpets. Freshen up your carpets with a sprinkle of baking soda before vacuuming. The basic requirements of the program are to be certified by one of many organizations that qualify dogs to do therapy work, http://www.akc.org/ akctherapydog/organizations.cfm, to document 50 therapy visits, and be AKC registered which can include an ILP or PALS registration. Upon reviewing these requirements I wondered how close our dogs, which make regular visits to a nursing home, were to earning the title. Time must fly when you are having fun, because when I pulled their certification records, I was surprised to find that they had been certified in November 2006 by one of the recognized organizations, Therapy Dogs, Inc. That certification included three supervised visits to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Then, going monthly the rest of 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and into 2011, wow, they easily had accumulated over 50 visits. During our next visit to the nursing home we obtained the necessary documentation of our visits, completed the AKC forms and included copies of the original certification and proof of continued participation and submitted the package to the AKC Performance Events Department. In the return mail we received a nice letter, a Therapy Dog patch and an AKC title certificate. We were told that of the 1,100 dogs titled to date (around September 1st) our Minnie, Nashville Minnie CDX RE MXJ AX OF TDH, is the second Boykin Spaniel to receive the AKC Therapy Dog title, THD. I wonder who the first one was? What did certification include? Certification varies with the organization. For us the Therapy Dog, Inc. program and visits are administered in Marshall County, Alabama, by the Retired and Seniors Volunteer Program, and is an outreach ministry of our church. The dogs are tested by a volunteer evaluator. The test included demonstration of temperament, some basic obedience and a lack of fear of a medical facility setting, e.g., not being scared by people in wheelchairs or on crutches. Veterinarian certification of health and vaccinations were submitted. And, there was training in things to do and not do in various settings. Lastly, there were three supervised facility visits; all of this with lots of paperwork from the evaluator. Other certification programs may be more or less extensive. What comprises a visit? While our monthly visit to a nursing home consists of visiting every room of a 91 bed facility and often putting on a little show or demonstration in the day room, there are many other activities that qualify. There are school visits, hospital visits, assisted living facility visits, and, one of the favorites, a reading buddy program at the library. In the reading buddy program a therapy dog becomes the friend of a student and the student reads to the dog. As many students have not had a positive experience with a dog, much less owned a dog, the program introduces them to a nonjudgmental friend while building their reading ability and selfconfidence. If you are interested, with a little research and asking around, you will likely find a Therapy Dog opportunity wherever you live, and if not, maybe you can organize one. All Pictures of Minnie at nursing home submitted by Butch Norckauer 10 HUNT TEST Submitted by Devon Ruth The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America will hold our first AKC Spaniel Hunt Test on March 3-4, 2012 at Rocky Creek Sporting Clays and Oak Grove Plantation. The location in Richburg, SC has excellent facilities and offers the handlers and spaniels multiple opportunities to demonstrate their flushing skills. The Hunt Test Planning Committee is making good progress in finalizing the plans. The premium will be posted on the BSCBAA web site Diesel pictured above Sunny pictured above www.theboykinspani elclub.com once it is completed. We welcome volunteers to assist with the hunt test. Today, as never before, our right to own and breed dogs responsibly is being threatened by the introduction of repressive canine legislation. This year AKC Government Relations has tracked over 1, 200 bills from across the United States that seek to impact the rights of dog owners and breeders. In addition to radical ownership limits, breeding restrictions, spay/neuter mandates, and breed-specific restrictions, some proposals have gone so far as to attempt to regulate all owners of multiple dogs as commercial breeders, regardless of breeding practices. The similarity of these measures from one state to another demonstrates the efforts of a national agenda aimed at taking away our rights to own and breed dogs in a manner consistent with our expertise. Successfully defending our way of life requires that we all stand up to defend our rights. It also depends on ensuring that lawmakers in office understand our concerns, and are willing to fight for the future of our dogs, our sport, and our way of life. Get involved and click here for more information AKC Political Action Committee (AKC PAC). Volunteers are needed for committees and to fill Board of Directors vacancies. Hunt Test plans have begun—get involved. In coming months, the BSCBAA will be supporting judges education, meet the breeds and expositions all over the country—get involved and volunteer! Enter your Boykin in an AKC event: conformation, obedience, hunt test, agility or tracking—check them out www.akc.org and check out our website page for additional upcoming Events. Get involved and enjoy your Boykin Spaniel! The Boykin Spaniel Standard ISSUE 03 November, 2011 We are proud to be apart of the Purina Pro Plan Club One of the easiest ways we can defend our rights is by supporting the election of candidates who share our interests. Through the AKC PAC, you have the opportunity to join with other purebred dog owners in support of elected officials and candidates who champion AKC’s positions on responsible dog ownership, breeding, and showing, and who will defend dog sports and responsible breeders during these legislative battles. One hundred percent of your contributions go directly to supporting the campaigns of candidates who will help protect our rights.* Click here to join the fight today. The common bond between all dog fanciers is our love of the purebred dog. We have shared interests and a shared responsibility to preserve the right to own and breed dogs. The challenges ahead are daunting, but together with your help, we can ensure that these rights are protected for years to come.
