2016
The 7th Annual Rivercrest Ryder Cup took place
on August 6th. This year we had a full field of 144
players competing. We played on a hot day
that only heated up more once the competition
got under way. At the top of the leaderboard
we had the PARtenders and the Mihnions who
played their last 9 holes head to head and finished 1-2 in one of the closest Ryder Cups in the
events history. We would like to thank all of the
participants of this years Ryder Cup!

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
The weather this season has been unrelenting and came to
a pinnacle the past few weeks. Excessive rainfall followed
by intense heat and humidity has wreaked havoc on the
fine turf throughout the property. This combination is a
superintendent’s worst nightmare and no matter what
preparation one uses Mother Nature always has the last
word. Right before aerification, damage could be seen on
many soil based areas that received too much rainfall followed by oppressive heat. These cool season plants can
only be asked to survive under these conditions for a short
while. This coupled with an untimely breakdown of our irrigation system has increased the damage.
Fear not, cooler, less humid weather is on the way to
reducing the severe stresses the plants and staff have
been enduring as we begin the recovery phase.
Aerification is one of the most valuable tools a superintendent possesses as it creates a passage for vital oxygen
to enter the rootzone and eliminates the noxious gases
created as plants die and decompose. Aerification reduces
compaction which slows water entering the rootzone but
also makes a column for already saturated soil to move
away from the plants while increasing evaporation. We
Drastic recovery in the aerified approach compared to the fairway.
completed Dryject on greens, managed to aerify the
approaches on 1,2,4, and 6 and they have begun healing.
Unfortunately (but looking back now, a blessing) the
weather forced us to abandon the rest of the approaches
and tees due to extreme wilt beginning by late morning in
the blazing sun. I say a blessing because if the weather
had been nice we would have continued and then with our
irrigation system going down it would have been disastrous.
Once the heat and humidity reduce we will immediately
begin punching to finish approaches and tees. We will be
adding seed, sand and a good shot of fertility to aid in
recovery. The worst areas on a few fairway edges will also
be aerified, seeded and coupled with fertilizer. The fairways
will be finished in mid fall along with a spray to
reduce/eliminate the fairy ring. This will also be completed
next spring.
Please check out our blog for a great article from Steve
McDonald. He is one of the foremost turf consultants in
the mid-atlantic region.

MEN’S LEAGUE RESULTS
This season’s Men’s League has come to an end. We started the
year with 32 teams of 2 players. We split the teams up in 4 divisions
with 8 teams in each division. Each team had 7 nine hole matches
which were played with in their divisions. After week 7 the top 4
teams made it to the playoffs. The teams of Rob Boyer and Jason
Vavra faced off against Chris Born and Greg Cordes in the championship match. Unfortunately on the week of the match Mr. Cordes
was on vacation so it was just Chris against Rob and Jason. Chris
tried his best but ultimately Rob and Jason were too much to handle as they won 6 & 5. Congratulations guys on the victory and
thank you to everyone who participated in this years Men’s League.

Rule 31 Four-Ball Stroke Play
PA G E 7
By Jamie Komancheck, PGA Head Golf Professional
“Mmmm, not bad”, said Colby (it takes a
lot to impress the young man.)
U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
What an exciting summer it is with
the return of Golf in the Olympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro. It’s
been 112 years since golf was
lasted played in the Olympics (just
before I was born as Colby let me
know.) Colby could hardly contain
his excitement, because the
Games were being held a few
days before his 7th birthday. And
what better present is there than a
Gold Medal (that’s even better
than Pokemon GO!)
Colby worked very hard all spring and
early summer to try earning one of the
four USA team spots. He entered tournaments and played well, but just couldn’t
crack into the Top 4. Then players started dropping out due to Zika fears. He
still had an outside shot.
The brand new Olympic Golf Course was
built just for these Olympic Games, and
would showcase the game of golf to the
world. To see if the course would be
ready for the best players in the world,
there was a “test” event in advance of the
official Games. Colby volunteered to be a
“tester”, so off to Brazil we headed!
The “test” event was a Four-Ball Stroke
Play event (Better Ball of Partners in
English.) Colby paired up with another
“tester”, a beautiful 18 year old girl from
Canada, named Brooke Henderson.
Colby introduced himself and asked her if
she played a lot of golf. She politely
informed him that she just won the
Women’s PGA Championship this year!
Colby and Brooke played well in the early
going with both making a few birdies. As
they stood on the 13th tee, a 479 yard
sharp dogleg right Par 4, they debated
trying to cut the corner to set up short
approach shots. Both players hit big tee
shots, hugging the tree line on the right.
They found two golf balls in the fairway.
Colby went to the first ball as Brooke was
outdriving him all day (he’s half her size,
and less than half her age.) Colby hit his
shot up there close to the hole. When
Brooke got to the second ball, she
noticed it wasn’t her ball, it was Colby’s.
Colby hit the wrong ball. So he went to
the green and retrieved the ball he hit, but
that ball wasn’t Brooke’s either. Turns out
Brooke’s ball had gone through the fairway into a bunker on the far side. The
ball Colby hit was left behind by another
player. Since the format was Four-Ball
Stroke Play and one of the partners had a
penalty, how did the ruling affect the
team?
Under Rule 31-5 Wrong
ball in Four-Ball Stroke
Play, if a player is in
breach of the rule
for making a stroke
at a wrong ball, the
player incurs a penalty of two strokes and
must play the ball
from the correct spot.
The player’s partner
incurs no penalty, even if
the wrong ball belonged
to her. Thankfully Brooke
helped Colby out by making a solid par from the
bunker. The team shot 8
under and won the “test”
event.
After the event Colby had
received word that Matt
Kuchar had taken the final
spot on the USA Olympic Golf team.
Despite his disappointment, Colby was
asked to be an Ambassador for the team
and educate them on the finer details of
the golf course. Colby happily obliged (it
meant he got some cool free Polo outfits.)
After explaining the format to Kooch,
Colby showed the team around the
course. He got to hang around the team
in the Olympic Village and watch the official golf event, rooting Kooch to a bronze
medal.
Colby was energized to start preparing for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo,
so he entered more U.S. Kids tournaments when he got back. And at his
first event back….. he won in a playoff, claiming his own Gold Medal!
Congratulations Colby and Happy 7th
Birthday! Now go chase your
dreams!

DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION
ARE YOU WORKING YOUR FINGERS TO THE BONE AND NOT SEEING
ANY RESULTS? TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR PRACTICE HABITS.
Here are two effective strategies for you to start seeing more of a benefit to your practice time.
Random vs. Block
Replicate Pressure
Practice can be categorized into two types; Block
Practice and Random Practice. Block practice is when
you repeat the same thing over and over again to build
up a certain amount of reps in order to groove a movement. This is what most golfers spend their time doing.
Random practice involves changing something shot by
shot, for example changing target, club or desired
flight.
Similar to number above, we want to make our practice
to be reflective of what we experience on the course,
where every shot counts. Using a chipping example,
hitting a pile of balls one after the other with no consequence is a complete waste of time. A great way to
represent the actual game in training is to add pressure
to your practice by setting target goals to achieve or to
play skills based games.
Block practice has its place as part of effective practice, especially when working on a technical drill where
the result is not the main focus. However many studies
have shown that random practice is the most effective
way of developing and learning a new skill. Golf on the
course is 100% random, therefore it makes sense to
practice in this way most of the time, and otherwise
your training is not reflective of the actual game you are
training to improve.
A nice example of this is playing ‘Par 18’ around a
chipping green. Play 9 holes, with 3 easy, 3 medium
and 3 difficult up and downs to achieve. Putt out each
hole and keep your score. This is great practice on your
own or with a partner.
