AUTUMN SHADES AT BLACKHEATH HALLS
Once again we have a full programme of
performances and events lined up at the
Halls over the autumn period.
There are four great comedy nights,
opening with Shappi Khorsandi’s brand
new show “Because I’m Shappi...” on 4
October. The ever popular Marcus
Brigstocke makes a welcome return on 22
October with “Je M’accuse – I am Marcus”.
Add two further comic talents – Paul
Chowdhry on 25 October and Seann
Walsh on 20 December, and you have a
great season of fun! Our Comedy Happy
Hour offers 20% off all drinks between
6.30pm and 7.30pm on comedy nights.
One of the most highly regarded
vocalists in the UK, Jacqui Dankworth,
is back for one night only on 10 October,
with a mix of jazz, folk, soul and blues.
For a great evening of true “variety”
don’t miss The House of Fun With Arthur
Smith with fantastic comedy, sparkling
music and saucy stand-up.
What can be said about the Tiger Lillies
that hasn’t already been said? If you
haven’t seen them, now’s your chance,
and if you have then welcome back! With
their mix of cabaret, anarchic opera and
gypsy music, they arrive on 26 November.
A treat for all gardening enthusiasts, on
21 November, the nation’s favourite and
most respected gardener, Monty Don,
speaks about his life and travels visiting
gardens all over the world.
Blackheath Halls is pleased to present a
short series of events to mark the
centenary of World War I, with music,
poetry, and a wonderfully nostalgic
evening of songs and popular music from
the time, Keep The Home Fires Burning.
Our Saturday afternoon children’s
theatre series presents four classic stories
– The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Pinocchio,
Aladdin and The Selfish Giant, together
with a fantastic new tale, Shoe Kangaroo
and the Big Bad Boot.
The Sunday morning recital series opens
on 28 September with the virtuoso
pianist, Nikolai Demidenko. The autumn
series also includes “London Pride – A
Celebration of London in Song” with
soprano Catherine Bott and pianist
Jonathan Cohen, the brilliant young
Czech Orbis Trio, piano duo Pascal and
Ami Rogé in a programme of French
music during World War I, and violin and
piano duo Deniz Arman Gelenbe and
Michael Bochmann.
The Jette Parker Young Artists present
three further Wednesday evening recitals,
the first of these is on 15 October.
The students of Trinity Laban play an
integral role in the music making of the
Halls, with an exciting and varied
programme of concerts and other events,
featuring the Symphony Orchestra,
Sinfonia, Wind Orchestra, and Chorus.
There are also many opportunities to get
involved and learn new skills, including
tea dances, our annual Blackheath Goes
Gospel project, and a special Ceilidh. Or
why not join the Blackheath Halls
Orchestra or Chorus, or our Meantime
Jazz group?
There’s plenty for everyone, so do come

Scottish born conductor Garry Walker directs the Trinity
Laban Symphony Orchestra in a programme based around
the thematic idea of water and the sea.
Frank Bridge’s orchestral suite The Sea aptly opens the
concert, followed by Toru Takemitsu’s Riverrun, one of many
pieces in the composer’s output reflecting his fascination
with water. Gorgeous melodies and a vast, impeccably
employed palette of orchestral colours have made
Scheherazade one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s most popular works.
This piece, along with a new composition from Trinity Laban
student Oliver Muxworthy, completes the programme.

Trinity Laban orchestral students play
alongside members of the teaching
staff in this performance of Vaughan
Williams’ Symphony No 2, popularly
known as the London Symphony.
Although composed pre-war, the
symphony was dedicated to friend
and fellow composer George
Butterworth, who was killed in action in
the July 1916 Somme offensive during
World War I, and it was Butterworth
who first encouraged Vaughan Williams
to write the piece.

street opera trio" tours the world

This retrospective exhibition
includes paintings, drawings,
etchings, woodcuts, screen prints,
three-dimensional works, and poster
designs for the Halls. It also features
photographs by Tom’s son, James and
paintings in the Chinese style by his
daughter-in-law, Adeline.

In this exhibition Terry Scales has
stepped aside from his much-loved
subjects on the River Thames to pay
homage to the world of music. The
relationship between artists and
composers is a long and established
one. Most notably the influence of
Claude’s masterpiece The Enchanted
Castle on Debussy’s La Mer and other
pieces come to mind.
These portraits of musicians were
inspired by the brilliant performances
and dedication of Trinity Laban
students in concert at St Alfege Church,
Greenwich and Blackheath Halls.
Taken from on-the-spot sketches, they
capture the vibrancy of the moment
rather than photographic detail.

ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMME
We run a thriving Community
Engagement programme at
Blackheath Halls. Our aim is to
engage as many members from
the diverse local community of
every age in high quality music
making and performance in this
wonderful historic venue.
Blackheath Halls is fortunate
to be situated in one of the
world’s leading cultural capitals
where so many exceptional
musicians and leaders live and
work. Our aim is to give all our
community participants the
opportunity of working with
some of the country’s most
talented artists as well as
getting a chance to perform in
our famous Great Hall.
Over the past year we have
produced two fully staged
community operas, Britten’s
The Little Sweep and Rossini’s
The Adventures of Count
Ory, giving 250 local people
aged between seven and 85
the chance to perform
alongside professionals and
be led by a professional opera
team in productions of high
artistic worth.
During the year we have also
run projects giving more than
400 singers of all abilities
and levels of experience the
opportunity to sing gospel
music and musical theatre
classics as well as classical
repertoire.
In March we took our
community work to Central
London for a glittering
performance of Mendelssohn’s
Elijah in St John’s Smith
Square. The concert was
opened by Dame Joan Ruddock,
Matthew Rose sang the role of
Elijah and we were conducted
by our Blackheath Halls Opera
Patron and Musical Director of
English National Opera, Edward
Gardner OBE.
As well as singing we have
two thriving orchestras, our
Blackheath Halls Orchestra and
our Meantime Jazz Orchestra
rehearsing and performing all
year round at Blackheath Halls.
