Independent Auditor’s Report

Native woodlands are being destroyed at a very fast pace
in Lebanon whilst they are amongst our most important
habitats harboring biodiversity, moderating climate
change, protecting against desertification, increasing
soil water infiltration and inducing socio economic
development. Thus, reforestation constitutes a vital
challenge for Lebanon. A small group of volunteers has
recognized this pressing need and has decided to create
an association to that effect:
Jouzour Loubnan was born in 2008.
Our Mission
Why Jouzour Loubnan ?
Our mission is to participate in the restoration
of Lebanese woodland and promote sustainable
forestation mainly in arid regions.
We have chosen to intervene mainly in arid mountainous
regions as, on one hand, they are very often dismissed
in exiting forestation programs and, on the other hand,
the benefits of such forestation are tremendous.
The success of our forestation campaigns resides in
our commitment to ensure the appropriate irrigation,
guardianship and protection of the trees we plant.
This success can be difficult to achieve, more so in
arid regions due to extreme weather conditions, lack
of surface water, poor soil quality and overgrazing. In
order to overcome the issues at hand, we devised a
special program taking into account, for each region,
all technical and socio-economical aspects related to
such complex environments.
Our Goals
As a result, Jouzour Loubnan has three interconnected goals:
• PLANT mainly in arid regions
Increase the woodland area in Lebanon by planting indigenous
species to restore degraded high mountain ecosystems and
develop wildlife habitats.
• EMPOWER local communities
Empower the local community to protect, manage, promote
and benefit from the projects.
• PROMOTE environmental awareness
Promote environmental awareness of our natural resources
amongst younger generations, locals and officials.
3
This evening allowed us to finance partially our
plantation activities (189,075$ net raised) and to raise
awareness on the issues at stake and the challenges
faced in forestation in Lebanon. On the other hand,
this event which grouped all the age ranges, was
also leveraged by the national awareness campaign
on unipoles, billboards, truck ads, posters, leaflets,
online & radio advertising with a total value of
110,875$ and that was practically entirely donated
by the relevant stakeholders. We firmly believe that
raising awareness is equally important as planting
trees: Our plantation campaigns and 3 years of
irrigation and maintenance would lose all their value
if the forests we are building are not well protected
and genuinely respected for the future generations.
Another one of our great 2011 successful initiatives
is our newly designed program for the real estate
developers, which can be simply summed up by:
“one m² of forest planted for every m² built”. This
initiative has positively exceeded our expectations:
Four real estate developers with more than 70,000
m² to be built have signed up and committed to our
program; and there is a number of other promoters
that are very interested and still considering our
program. We hope that its future development
will, on one hand, ensure a regular revenue stream
as apartments are being sold and, on the other
hand, participate in raising awareness through the
real estate developers marketing materials. This
encouraging commitment of the developers and
newly built cooperation are once again confirming
to us the will of every Lebanese citizen to make a
difference in forestation, each in their own field.
To our great surprise, we had to suddenly welcome
the winter early in the year, which has greatly reduced
the number of trees that were planted between
October and December. However, we were still able
to plant close to 25.000 trees in Ouyoun El Siman
(Keserwan), Btedy (Bekaa) and Ainata (South).
Indeed this number is less than our 35.000 plan but
surely more than our 21.000 planted in 2010. We
hope that we will make up for it by planting more
than 35.000 trees in 2012 while continuing our
irrigation, maintenance and guardianship program
for the 57.000 trees already planted.
This annual report will highlight many more
achievements and I would like to thank Jouzour
Loubnan team members as well as all the friends of
Jouzour Loubnan who participated in making 2011
such a successful year.
2012 is now a challenge, as we need to exceed
the 2011 successful achievements: this is why
Jouzour Loubnan’s team is committed to participate
more effectively every year in the restoration of
our Lebanese woodland and the promotion of
sustainable forestation mainly in arid regions.

Methodology
In order to insure the long term tree
survival we have defined a comprehensive
program based both on scientific grounds
thanks to our partnership with Saint
Joseph University, Faculty of science and,
on empiric approaches due to the lack of
prior experience in the forestation in some
of the areas we are planting in.
We plant only on municipal lands based on a
contractual commitment from the municipality to
protect the forested area.
We choose the species amongst the native trees
in accordance with the studied ecosystem of the
targeted region. In addition, we strive to enhance
biodiversity through the choice of various native
species including shrubs and small plants well
adapted to the local environment and its constraints.
In regions with overgrazing, we either plant trees
over two-meter tall or fence the area to be planted
and plant mainly 20 to 30 cm tall trees. In other
regions. we plant mainly 20 to 30 cm tall trees. We
purchase the trees from selected nurseries and
for some species like Cedrus libani and Junipers
excelsa we perform genetic analysis in order to
guarantee their origin.
We apply plantation protocols insuring optimal
survival rate after plantation. Professional supervision
is provided for each forestation campaign.
We install an irrigation system and insure regular
watering and guardianship through local personne
for a period of 3 years. This increases the awareness
amongst the local community. The watering
frequency is decreased progressively every year.
We control on a regular basis the status of the trees
we have planted, the quality of the maintenance and
the irrigation and guardianship services.

Key Achievements
SUMMARY /
PLANT mainly in arid regions
• Increase the woodland area in Lebanon by planting
indigenous species to restore degraded high
mountain ecosystems and develop wildlife habitats.
Thanks to private donations and to the motivation and
commitment of Jouzour Loubnan’s multidisciplinary
team, in summary, we have planted – in various regions
of Lebanon including Kfardebiane, Chabrouh, Ainata,
Ehmej, Bteddine, Akoura, Ayn Zebde and Btedy – a
total of 57,116 trees out of which 24,943 trees were
planted in 2011.
The species of the native trees planted vary in
accordance to the nature of the land and soil we are
planting in, to preserve its ecosystem and enhance its
biodiversity. Some of the trees planted are Lebanese
Cedars, Junipers, Pines, Carobs, Wild Almonds,
Oaks, Wild Prunes, Walnuts, Chestnut trees, and
many more native Lebanese trees. They were sourced
at nurseries in various regions contributing in their
economic development. Our insistence on planting
a variety of native trees on each site in order to
increase the resilience of the rehabilitated ecosystem
through biodiversity has led key public and private
stakeholders to take this approach and include it in
their specifications for forestation campaigns.
Based on that methodology, the mortality rate of
the trees planted has been lower than 10% so far; a
significant part of it was due to human activity such as
irresponsible ski-doos, ATV, etc.
Last but not least, we are successfully operating the
Laboratory for Seed Germination and Conservation
at Saint Joseph University - Faculty of science which
had been financed by Jouzour Loubnan; more than 95
different native species are stocked and conserved out
of which 25 species have their germination protocol
defined after many experiments and efforts.
EMPOWER local communities
• Empower the local community to protect, manage,
promote and benefit from the projects.
Capacity building is also one of our main objectives,
which is reached indirectly but efficiently through the
success of our forestation campaigns and our regular
contacts and lobbying with the local community.
Our efforts have led to extremely successful results
with the municipalities of Kfardebian, Ehmej and
Ainata, which have been very pro-active, since they
have adopted the forestation projects as their own,
while getting actively involved and requesting further
forestation efforts. Ainata Municipality has even started
new forestation efforts on its own
PROMOTE environmental awareness
• Promote environmental awareness of our natural
resources amongst younger generations, locals and
officials.
We conducted extensive awareness campaigns
through:
• presentations and workshops targeted to students
in schools and universities;
• the participation of local communities, corporate
employees and independent volunteers in our
plantation days;
• the involvement of the municipalities in our preplanning and execution of the forestation projects;
• the involvement and participation of the UNIFIL and
the Lebanese army in one of our plantation campaigns;
• our participation in fairs and festivals within the city
and in villages;
• the patronage of the President of the Republic and
the Minister of Agriculture, as well as the involvement
of many other Ministers and official bodies in our
projects’ opening ceremonies (Kfardebiane & Ainata)
and, last but not least;
• the fundraising gala dinner, its exposure to decision
makers and the general public,
• the outdoor awareness campaign, encouraging the
Lebanese public to take action and support forestation
initiatives
• the local media exposure and our constant online
communication.
FORESTATION PROJECTS/
New sites
JOUZOUR Btedy : [2011 - Ongoing] 10,350 trees
planted
The project was launched in 2011 on a land belonging
partially to the village of Btedy and partially to Chlifa in
the Bekaa valley at an elevation ranging from 1,000
to 1,100 meters. We have planted there 12,000 trees
from various species, mainly oak and wild almonds .
The size of the land that can be planted exceeds
one square kilometers, this plantation campaign
will continue throughout 2012 and 2013 and the
municipalities are considering adding another plot to
the forestation program.
More plantations in previous sites
JOUZOUR ARZ KFARDEBIAN: [2008 - Ongoing]
16.697 trees planted Between the Jonction and
Wardé ski slopes,
the Municipality of Kfardebian fenced a 10.000 m²
piece of land and planted in it, in 1997, a large number
of cedar trees to honor General Michel Sleiman who
was then Chief of Lebanon’s Army and is currently the
President of Lebanese Republic.
Unfortunately, the fence was cut open and the cedar
trees were made food to goat and sheep herds. In
2008, we rehabilitated the fence, planted 450 cedar
trees – 250 of them over 1m high in order to insure
a high visibility for the project – and installed a drip
irrigation system. In 2009 we planted an additional
120 cedar trees.
Then, we fenced in 2010 a 450.000 m² area and
planted 10,547 trees in the immediate vicinity of this
land and the project was inaugurated in 2010 by
His Excellency General Michel Sleiman, President of
the Lebanese Republic and in presence of Mr. Ziad
Baroud, Minister of Interior, Mr. Fadi Abboud, Minister
of Tourism, Mr. Mohammad Rahal represented by
Mr. Garo Haroutounian as well as local and regional
officials and many village inhabitants.
5,580 trees were planted in 2011 in Arz Kfardebian out
of a total of 16,697 trees.
Over 1,500 volunteers and 10 corporations participated
in these plantations campaigns and we can notice that
the fenced area has recovered a wide range of the
biodiversity in its fauna and flora, that did not exist
before. In addition, we have to recognize that, so far,
we were in no way annoyed by the shepherds and
overgrazing issues. Scientific studies are conducted in
this area to elucidate the impact of grazing on natural
soil seeds bank and possibility for long term grazed
area to recover.
The Arz Kfardebian forestation project continues. The
remaining parcels of the municipal land can still fit
around 13,000 trees, and it will hopefully be covered
in 2012.
JOUZOUR AINATA: [2010 - Ongoing] 14,842 trees
planted
The plantation project was launched in 2010, in Ainata
village in the South of Lebanon – Bint Jbeil Caza,
under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture, in
collaboration with the Ainata Municipality, the UNIFIL,
the Lebanese Army and with the participation of local
community, the first beneficiaries of this project. The
South of Lebanon is yet another region the Jouzour
team is covering with its green coat to diversify the
geographical regions in Lebanon, as we have already
planted in the Metn region, Keserwan area, and the
Bekaa.
Two plantation campaigns took place between 2010
and 2011, and many participated to the plantation of
more than 14,000 native and diverse trees; amongst
which are the French and Nepalese UNIFIL soldiers,
as well as the Lebanese Army forces and the local
villagers, including youth and adolescents; hence
raising their level of awareness about the threats of
desertification and benefits of forestation.
We have planted 6,804 trees in 2010 to which we
added 8,038 trees in 2011, and we are still ensuring
the irrigation and maintenance for all these trees. The
main two species are the carob and the oak trees,
in addition to more than 10 others different species
respecting the biodiversity of the existing ecosystem
within this area of the country.
It is also worth mentioning that following Jouzour’s
initiative and beyond our expectations, the Municipality
of Ainata was positively encouraged to grow their
green spaces and organised on their own more
plantation activities with the support of the Ministry of
Agriculture, amounting to 1500 additional trees within
the same land.
The Ainata forestation project continues. The remaining
parcels of the municipal land can still fit around 4,000
trees, and it will hopefully be covered in 2012. In which
village will our next green mission be in the South?
Maintenance of previous projects:
JOUZOUR GHABIT KFARDEBIAN: [2007-2008]
2.179 trees planted
Jouzour Loubnan started its activities in 2007 in
Kfardebian - Keserwan - next to the restaurant La
Cabane and Wardé’s ski slopes on a municipal land
that culminates at 2050 m. This region characterized
by cold winters, dry and hot summers, suffers from
over grazing and potentially damaging touristic
activities (ATV, ski-doo, hunting...).
Due to these prevailing conditions, we have decided
to plant only trees over 2 m high and to install a drip
irrigation system in order to insure the long term
success of our forestation campaigns.
After testing 8 different tree species in 2007, we
selected three of them: poplar, acer and walnut. Since
then a number of forestation campaigns have been
conducted in that area with 2.179 trees planted out
of which only 4 trees species were planted in order to
test a new planting protocol.
JOUZOUR CHABROUH: [2008 – 2010] 6.914 trees
planted
The vicinity of Chabrouh dam in Faraya village in
Keserwan is protected by the Ministry of Energy &
Water from grazing and potentially damaging touristic
activities.
Thanks to the support of Dr Fadi Comair, the General
Director of the Ministry of Energy and Water, a total of
6.914 trees out of which 185 cedar trees were planted
in 2008 and 3.709 cedar and walnut trees in 2009 and
3.020 cedar trees in 2010. In addition, we maintained,
irrigated & protected all the trees planted to date.
This site is constantly being visited by many tourists all
through the year and is gaining a lot of success from
its eco-touristic aspect.
JOUZOUR EHMEJ: [2009 – 2010] 3.885 trees
planted
Jouzour Loubnan has started in 2009 a forestation
campaign in Ehmej, main road just before Laklouk, with
the active collaboration of the Municipality of Ehmej
and its President Mr. Nazih Abi Semaan in a municipal
land protected by the municipality from grazing.
We have already planted there 125 juniper trees and
3.760 cedar trees out of which 700 were planted in
2010. We intend to continue extensive forestation
campaigns in that region in the coming years.
Other forestation projects: 2,249 trees planted
We have planted 2,249 various trees in other regions
and we are in constant discussions with many
more municipalities in order to conduct forestation
campaigns in several other regions in Lebanon and, as
usual, regardless of their political or religious believes.

Key Achievements
LABORATORY
Context:
The regeneration and management of woodlands in
the Mediterranean needs particular attention: the role
of plant cover is essential for mitigating desertification
processes.
Forestation is often limited to a narrow number of
species which are easy to grow in nurseries. This
practice greatly reduces levels of biodiversity and it
is even more worrisome with regards to shrubs and
minor hardwood which are the greater part of the
Mediterranean woody flora.
Beside cedars and juniper, many other trees of
economic and/or of ecological interest are present in
Lebanese mountains. Restoring these ecosystems
requires the use of dozens of plant species to rebuild
strong and resilient ecosystems. Recent international
research results highlighted the positive effects of
biodiversity.
Unfortunately, there are few nurseries producing
Lebanese native species. Learning how to propagate
these ‘new’ plants properly, including those deserving a
wider use as drought-tolerant, can be a great challenge
as well as a powerful tool to combat desertification and
enhance biodiversity.
Jouzour Loubnan took the initiative of creating the
Laboratory for Seed Germination and Conservation
(LSCG) dedicated to this purpose.
LSCG Activities:
To date, 95 different Lebanese native species were
harvested in the wild according to predefined scientific
protocols respecting a minimal number of plants and a
minimum distance between contributing plants. Seeds
were then cleaned, measured, weighted, dried and
stocked at 4°C:
• Germination protocols were defined for 25 different
species.
• More than 200 seedlings, grown in our germination
room belonging to Juniperus, Cedrus, Abies and
Quercus, were transferred to a nursery in Kfardebian to
be used in our future campaigns in this region.
• More than 150 other seedlings were transferred
to APJM (Association pour la Protection de Jabal
Moussa). nurseries in accordance with our partnership
agreement.
• Bulbs and rhizomes for more than 10 endemic or
endangered species have been collected and stocked
for ex-situ conservation as well as for a future botanic
garden collection.
Moreover, before each plantation campaign involving
Cedrus libani trees, genetic tests were performed in the
molecular biology laboratory of The Faculty of Science
at Saint Joseph University to verify their Lebanese
origin.
Finally, a study is conducted on the asexual reproduction
of Junipers excelsa in order to respond to the lack of
this species in the Lebanese market and thus ensure
our plant material for future forestation campaign.
COMMUNICATION
COMMUNICATION ACTIVITIES 2011:
Many communication activities have been conducted

• Plan seminars, exhibits and media coverage,
• Develop a classroom biodiversity and environmental
awareness educational kit,
• Continue and enhance the awareness activities
within schools and focus more on university students.
• Follow up and train the local communities,
• Design and organize an outdoor public campaign,
• Reach a wider Lebanese public through local media
and our active participation in events,
• Develop new interactive website and online
communication,
• Organize press conferences for the inauguration of
the planned forestation projects
How to get involved?
We are all concerned by the fast reduction of
native woodlands area in Lebanon, everyone
of us can contribute to the forestation effort.
The most obvious contribution is the financial
contribution or the participation to the gala
dinner for example. But it is far from being the
only possible contribution. We will give a few
examples:
• If you have a young and motivated spirit, you
can participate in our plantation campaigns.
We announce them on our website www.
jouzourloubnan.org and on our Jouzour
Loubnan page on Facebook.
• If you are a corporate manager, you
can organize a planting campaign for the
employees of your company and their
families: these corporate events have been
extremely appreciated by the companies that
experienced them. Typically, after a departure
from Beirut at around 8:30 am on an October
or November weekend, you would arrive on
site at 10:00 am. The site would have been
prepared, the holes having already been done.
After a short training, the campaign starts
under the supervision of Jouzour Loubnan
team assisted by professionals. It lasts for 2 to
3 hours after which, tired but happy, you would
gather around a corporate lunch. Quite a
happy event, but, as well, quite an awareness
experience for all participants about the
importance of protecting and developing our
woodland heritage.
• If you are in the real estate development field,
you can join our special program described
below
• If you are socially or politically active, involved
or influential, you may assist in the political
awakening of the Lebanese Government and
its commitment to implement a serious plan in
the regulatory field (recycling, protection against

DINER
We are proud to have many friends! We are grateful to
our regular sponsors and to those who have extended
significant financial help to Jouzour Loubnan. However,
one year ago, we felt the need to look for new ways
to develop our awareness campaigns, marketing
techniques and fundraising.
For the first time we thought about organizing a social
event.
At that time we had the chance to benefit from the
involvement of the French contingent of the UNIFIL with
our plantation program and the French Ambassador
honored us with his patronage of the event.
We were also fortunate enough to succeed in mobilizing
for the event a group of highly motivated and dedicated
ladies, all truly concerned with reforestation.
A few meetings with this group and the decision was
taken: it was obvious for all of us that a dinner in an
attractive place will drive many of our fellow citizens to
discover Jouzour Loubnan, its vision, its mission, its
achievements and its needs.
PIER7, a brand new seaside night club in Dora was
selected.
For almost 6 months, excitement, mobilization,
dedication verging on militancy and extreme attention
to detail, animated the whole group of organizers.
We wanted the event to be unforgettable and IT HAS
BEEN INDEED! …
On October 4, 2011 the place was magically decorated
with a green cover at its entrance, the sofa-lounge type
tables glittered with candles along with the name of
a native tree for each table and with a beautiful starlit sky for a ceiling, our guests, sponsors and many
friends walked into wonderland.
We cannot thank in this little summary all the sponsors
who have bigheartedly responded to our call.
With their help and because of their dedication the
results went beyond our aspiration and dreams.
Generously, Patricia Nammour and Issam Breidi,
(prominent TV anchors), elegantly and wittingly,
mastered the ceremony from beginning to end.
Graceful volunteer hostesses in charge of the seating
discreetly fluttered around the tables to sell tombola
tickets.
We had received outstanding donations for the tombola
including an idyllic cruise for two in the Caribbean,
two iPads’, laptops, car insurance, several pieces of
jewelry, refined deluxe home wear, renowned women
and men accessories, airlines tickets, week-ends in a
resort, etc…
An innovatively concocted menu was selected, and the
program of the party sharply orchestrated. There were
no dull moments as the evening unfolded with military
precision and uninterrupted enchantment: very brief
speeches, a quick presentation on forestation, music
of the 60’s and 70’s, and 6 stunning shows including
Tango, Black Swann, Amy Whinehouse and Michael
Jackson impersonations.
At 11 pm the younger generation arrived benefiting
from a premium all-night open bar, a fabulous DJ and a
special tombola with various tempting gifts.
An evening that lingers in all the memories and that
begs to be repeated in 2012.

FORMATION AND OBJECT
JOUZOUR LOUBNAN is a non political association not for profit,
founded in April 2008. The main objectives of the association are:
• To participate in the restoration of Lebanese woodland and
promote sustainable forestation in arid regions.
• Increase the woodland area in Lebanon by planting indigenous
species to restore degraded high mountain ecosystems and
develop wildlife habitats.
• Empower the local community to protect, manage, promote
and benefit from the projects.
• Promote environmental awareness of our natural resources
amongst younger generations.
ADOPTION OF NEW AND REVISED STANDARDS
In the current year, the Association has adopted the new and
revised Standards and Interpretations issued by the International
Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the International Financial
Reporting Interpretations Committee (IFRIC) that are relevant to
the Association’s operations and effective for annual reporting
periods beginning on or after January 1, 2011. The adoption of
these new and revised Standards and Interpretations did not result
in any significant impact on the Association’s financial statements.
In addition, and as of the date of authorization of these financial
statements, certain Standards and Interpretations were in issue
but not yet effective, Management anticipates that the adoption
of these Standards and Interpretations (where applicable) in the
related future periods will have no material financial impact on the
financial statements of the Association.
SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
• Statement of Compliance:
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with
International Financial Reporting Standards.
• Statement of Preparation:
The financial statements have been prepared on the historical
cost basis or fair value where applicable, in Lebanese Pounds.
• Fixed Assets:
Fixed assets are stated at cost in Lebanese Pounds net of
accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Depreciation
is computed using the straight-line method over the estimated
useful lives of the assets based on the following annual rates:
Tanks 15%
• Translation of Foreign Currencies:
Transactions denominated in foreign currencies are translated
during the year into Lebanese Pounds using the exchange rates
prevailing at the dates of the transactions. Monetary assets and
liabilities denominated in foreign currencies are re-translated
into Lebanese Pounds at the rates of exchange prevailing at
the reporting date. The resulting exchange gains or losses are
recorded in the statement of comprehensive income.
• Revenue Recognition:
Contributions and annual subscriptions of the members are
recognized as revenues only when there is no doubt regarding
their collection.
• Use of Estimates.
In the application of the accounting policies described in Note
3, management is required to make judgments, estimates and
assumptions about the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities
that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates
and associated assumptions are based on historical experience
and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual
results may differ from these estimates.
The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on
an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are
recognized in the period in which the estimate is revised if the
revision affects only that period or in the period of the revision
and future periods if the revision affects both current and future
periods.
