MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
MEETING MAY 25, 2006
June is here. Everyone is working very hard to
have a more successful show than last year.
Please consider any of the car show committees.
Moving to Thrifty parking lot will be an eye opener
for our club. Parking will be an issue this year, any
extra help will be appreciated. Every year we have
had more cars and this year won’t be any different.
Any of you who missed the Mystery Cruise last Saturday, all I can say is “Oh well.” Those of you who
went, wipe the slobber off your face.

Keith called the meeting to order. Asked new
members to stand and introduce themselves.
Minutes from the last meeting were approved as
written in newsletter. Andy and Keith presented
scholarship to Shawn Redmond. Dennis read the
treasurers report and was approved as read.
Don’t forget to buy raffle tickets. Boyd Kallicott
had a kidney removed and is home and doing
well, at the same time Donna fell and broke her
ankle and was in the hospital with Doug and both
came home at the same time!
Sandy had candy labels made with the Twin City
Idlers poster for the car show. These will be given
out at the end of the show as the cars are leaving
as a Thank you gift. Label was passed around for
people to see. Reminder of Mystery Cruise at
1:30 on Saturday at Viking Village. It was decided
that when we had a special cruise in mind that
we would leave from Thrifty Food parking lot because it is easier to stay together when leaving
town. Kris said the Matco tools were given to the
person who received the scholarship. A 4 X 8
sign was discussed about buying but Keith asked
anyone in the meeting if they could paint a sign
and Papa Bear (Doug Coolidge) volunteered to
paint the sign. That will save the club $300.00!
Skippy explained the parking and how the cars
will be brought into the parking lot from the street.
Keith will check for power. The Security and
Parking staff will be wearing yellow shirts this
year. Papa Bear talked about the High School car
show coming up June 2. If interested in helping,
please contact him. Twin City Idlers web site is
up, please check it out. Great turn out for the Silvana Car show. We had 30 members attend and
received trophy. Reminder of Colby cruise and
car show Sunday and Monday. June 3 lots of
things going on—Arlington Merchants show,
Skippy’s wedding and His Church car show.

name tags will cost $7.60 due to sales tax. We haven’t
paid this in the past but Seawind awards would like us to
adjust this for future nametags.
Drive-ins offer an experience and an opportunity for us
that is more than merely seeing a MOVIE on the BIG screen.
It's about seeing the larger picture— choosing the Drive-in
as your opportunity to support a fragile Mom & Pop tradition;
to celebrate and to help preserve the presence of the Past.
Last month we talked about getting a group together this summer to go
to a Drive In movie. As chance would have it, we will be given the
opportunity to go (and with other car clubs) who would also like to do
the same (please read flyer below). Sounds like a lot of fun. We have
plenty of time to decide if this is something we would all like to do. Just
think, an opportunity to sit in the back seat and watch a movie OR ?!!

SENIOR DAY AT HAGGENS
On Thursday, May 4th, we did a small car show for Senior Day at
Haggens. Senior Day involves bussing in senior citizens from the local
senior homes and centers. Haggen had food, bingo, blood pressure
checks and visiting nurses to talk to people. The Idlers brought 10 cars to
show and I brought some music to play. All in all it was a nice day and fun
was had by all. We can plan on it again next year.

SILVANA CAR SHOW
On Saturday May 6th, we had 30 club members that went to the Silvana Car Show.
We took the trophy for the most participants in a club. Also taking home trophy’s were
Geoff Davis, Knox Knowles, Jim Konkle and Steve Johnson.

WORDS AND PHRASES YOU HAVEN’T HEARD IN A LONG TIME
I came across this phrase in a book yesterday “Fender Skirts”. A term I haven’t heard in a long time and
thinking about “fender skirts” started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice. Like “curb feelers” and “steering knobs”. (AKA) suicide knob. Since I’d been
thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you. Remember “continental kits?” They were
bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln continental. When did we quit calling them “emergency brakes?” At some point “parking brake” became the
proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with “emergency brake.” I’m sad, too, that almost all
the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the “foot feed.” Didn’t you ever wait at the street
for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the “running board” up to the house? Here’s a phrase I
heard all the time in my youth but never anymore—”store bought.” Of course, just about everything is
store bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store bought dress or a store
bought bag of candy. “Coast to Coast” is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means
almost nothing. Now we take the term “world wide” for granted. This floors me. On a smaller scale, “wall
to wall” was once a magical term in our homes. In the 50’s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors
with, wow, wall to wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall to wall carpeting with hardwood
floors. Go figure! When’s the last time you heard the quaint phrase “in a family way?” It’s hard to imagine
that the word “pregnant” was once considered a little graphic, a little to clinical for use in polite company.
So we had all that talk about the stork visits and “being in a family way” or simply “expecting.” Apparently
“brassiere” is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it’s
just “bra” now. “Unmentionables” probably wouldn’t be understood at all. I always loved going to the
“picture show,” but I considered “movie” an affection. Most of these words go back to the 50’s, but here’s
a pure 60’s word I came across the other day—”rat fink.” Ooh, what a nasty put-down! Here’s a word I
miss—”percolator.” That was just a fun word to say and what was it replaced with? “Coffee maker.” How
dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this. I miss those made up marketing words that were meant to sound
so modern and now sound so retro. Words like “DynaFlow” and “Electrolux.” Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with “SpectraVision!” Food for thought—was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that’s what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers
threatening kids with castor oil anymore. Some words aren’t gone, but are definely on the endangered
list. The one that grieves me most “supper.” Now everybody says “dinner.” Save a great word. Invite
someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts. Someone forwarded this to me. I thought some of us of a
“certain age” would remember most of these. Just for fun, pass it along to others of “a certain age.”

MYSTERY CRUISE MAY 27, 2006
Our Mystery Cruise was a huge success. We met at Viking at 1:30 and left at
2:00. We arrived at our destination (Chuck Togstad’s) at 2:40. Chuck has 5
beautiful cars and oh so much memorabilia from the 1950’s. Dennis found out
about Chuck’s place while browsing the internet and we both decided that this
was a must see! As Dennis said, Shock and Awe is all we can say!

Our monthly meeting is held on the last Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at the
Stanwood Café. Dinner is available at the meeting for $7.00.
There is an informal breakfast get-together every Saturday at 7:00 AM at the
Stanwood Café.
There is an informal cruise-in every Saturday at 4 p.m. (Spring/Summer) and 3 p.m.
(Fall/Winter) in the parking lot at Viking Village.
Dues of $15.00 are required to join and will be collected annually on January 1.
