‘DRY DAY’ TO CURB MALARIA After oo Regd. No. MH/MR/South-160/2009-11 RNI Regn. The civic body has advised people to observe a ‘dry day’ at least once a week, during which societies will not store water within their premises, and keep the place dry, thus ensuring that there will be no breeding ground for mosquitoes. According to the survey carried out by BMC’s health department, it has been observed that water stored in pots, flowers pots and air conditioners act as a breeding ground for mosquito larvae, eventually leading to a malarial epidemic. Hence the BMC has formulated the idea of observing ‘dry days’. It wants citizens to empty all possible water-storing vessels including pots, flower pots, water tanks, air conditioners, and others and sun dry them at least for the day. This, according to the civic body, will help curb malaria, as sun drying will deprive mosquitoes of a breeding ground, ultimately reducing the number of patients falling victim to the killer disease. It may be noted that last year, the city witnessed an unpleasant rise in malaria cases. This sudden increase in the number of patients resulted in utter chaos, as several civic hospitals lacked adequate medical facilities to treat patients. The BMC had to then resort to Citizens holding placards about malaria menace protest near BMC HQ, in this file photo. holding medical camps. Commenting on the issue, Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said, “This year, we have geared up before the monsoon and are equipped with machinery to curb the breeding of mosquitoes in the city.” She added, “During investigations, we discovered that most of the larvae breeding spots were located within housing societies and houses than in public places and government buildings. Regular water-storage in pots provides enough space for mosquitoes to multiply. Hence we appeal to the people to observe ‘dry days’ on a regular basis, because it is simple, effective and free of cost.” Citing that migrants from rural areas could be carriers of the malaria, last year, the civic body had distributed around 1.3 lakh health cards to migrants who had come to the city in search of livelihood. Moreover, even this year the BMC has decided to focus on the health of construction labourers. CAN YOU SAVE HER LIFE ? For a small fishing village of Sakhri Nate that houses around 500 trawlers and 200 odd small fishing boats, there are around 5,000 plus Nepali nationals doing some or the other odd fishing jobs in the region. Hard Job, Good Money In some 10 odd villages located around the controversial Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP), fishing is the prime occupation, followed by farming. “The village of Sakhri Nate is the second most important fishing port along the West coast, closely followed by Madban,” said Amjad Borkar, president of fishing community, Sakhri Nate. In order to assist the locals in hauling the fresh catch, Nepali hands are the best ones. These Nepali youths make anywhere between Rs.300 to Rs.500 a day, while working on a trawler. OPINIONS Parinaaz Mehta Lecturer The BBC did a fantastic job of broadcasting the wedding. For the first time, watching a news channel was a treat to the eyes, as there was no news about terrorism, dirty politics, etc. Dhanbahadur Shinoi (18) a native of Nepal’s Khailali district, ran away from home after his parents forced him to get educated, and landed in Jaitapur, where today, he is working as the main deckhand on one of the trawlers. “Initially, it was very difficult. I had to adjust to the dialect, food and the people. With time, I blended in and now it’s my new home,” said Shinoi. When Shinoi returned to his hometown, he (Left) The fishing village of Sakhri Nate. (Top & below) Nepali youth in Sakhri Nate who man and manage fishing business of locals while they are busy fighting against JNPP spread the word that Jaitapur is the land of opportunities and gains. Soon, his friends and other boys from Khailali flocked to Sakhri Nate, Jaitapur and Madban seeking jobs as deckhands, cleaners, etc. Just like Shinoi, Raj Dabu, Sham Choki, Ramkumar Thappa and several others, have found a home away from home in these villages of Ratnagiri. Most of them who have moved in from hamlets, had always dreamt of a better life. “The situation back home was very pitiable. My father was a farmer and we lived hand-to-mouth,” said Choki. Being the elder brother of three sisters, the responsibility of getting them married forced Choki to abandon his homeland. “Today, after working for almost four years onboard Borkarbhai’s trawler, I’m able send some money back home, which is being saved for my sisters’ marriages,” stated Choki Deckhands-cum-managers “They (Nepalis) are generally employed as deckhands over here. Usually their work includes spreading nets, loading and unloading the Were you glued to the television to watch the Royal wedding? According to Qurshid and several other fishermen, Nepali deckhands are easy to hire and maintain. “They are hard and rugged. Easily available at few thousands, they work tirelessly,” added Karim Siddique, a fisherman from Madban. Be it Qurshid, Siddque or Borkar all are a part of the ongoing protest against the proposed JNPP and despite doing so they still manage to run their business. “It’s easy. While we are busy protesting against the state, we ask our deckhands to take care of our business,” said Qurshid. Sakhri Nate supplies around an incredible four to five tonnes of fish everyday from the waters surrounding the Ratnagiri coast. “Every month, a fisherman makes well over Rs.20 lakh. The catch is not only sent to market, but processed and exported as well. The business will no longer be the same once JNPP is constructed,” claimed Borkar. It’s a taster, as will be the next one – Gluttony – which I am hoping to finish by September. By next February, I want to be able to send the lot to Cannes for a showing, to film festivals, to television studios.” The theme for his sevenfilm offering was inspired by Polish film-maker Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “The Decalogue”, based on the Ten Commandments, and is an unpredictable look at the way the seven deadly sins affect lives in their omission as well as commission. Does he think he will ever enter politics? It must be a question that has been put to him quite a lot, for there is fleeting irritation on his remarkable face. “All I can say is that politics disillusions me and with my mindset, there is little chance I will ever consider it. I am not my great grandfather. At the end of the day, I’m me, I live in a different time and age. What my great grandfather did was very relevant to his time and his age. What would he have felt about politics It is always fascinating to meet the progeny of famous people to see if the past comes through in any way. Vishaal Desai is 28, a film-maker and passionate about his work in the way that young people now are, if they are lucky. Morarji Desai, fourth prime minister of India, just happens to be his great grandfather. In conversion with Carol Andrade today if he were alive? I cannot tell. Maybe he would do things differently. Maybe not. But of one thing I am sure – he would never compromise his principles.” But he is conscious of his own history, even if no pressure has ever been placed upon them to conform tot is burden. Conscious enough to ensure that very few people abroad knew about it! He is a child of his time, doing a job for his time in the nest way that he knows. One thing he seems to have inherited, a reluctance to indulge in small talk! Morarjibhai was famous for letting people know that he had little time for chit-chat as well, not always gently either. As a brand new prime minister in 1977 (to 1979), he received a surprise visitor in the form of the Chief Justice of India M H Baig, who came to congratulate him. And Morarjibhai let him know that it was inappropriate for a Chief Justice to call on a prime minister, that a letter would have done equally well. But then, the inference was that his predecessor Mrs Indira Gandhi would have apPics: Azad Shrivastav | ADC T hree weeks ago, on April 10, the 16th death anniversary of Morarji Ranchhodji Desai passed un-noticed. Yet if you mention his name, the response (and there still is) is usually equal parts awed remembrance and affectionate amusement. Single-handedly, the man who was an Indian independence activist, the fourth Prime Minister of India from 1977– 79, the first Indian Prime Minister who did not belong to the Indian National Congress and the first Indian to receive the highest civilian awards from both India and Pakistan, the Bharat Ratna and Nishaan-e-Pakistan, did more than anyone else to practice and propagate urine therapy. Down the corridor from the offices of this newspaper, a young man who stands a shade over 6 feet 2 inches, with a distinctive face and a sharply designed beard, carries the Morarji Desai legacy lightly on his shoulders. At 28, Vishaal Desai is forging his own path as a maker of short films. A graduate from the London School of Film, he is toughing it out, and loving every minute. For the past six weeks, he has been working on his first film, a 12 to 15 minute short which he expects will take him another two weeks to finish. “It’s called Envy, and is part of a series of seven films called The Seven Deadly Sins. Next is Gluttony,” he says blandly. Then will come Greed, Wrath, Sloth, Pride and Lust, and we cannot help but hark back to what Morarjibhai would have made of the whole thing. We suspect he would not have been a whit fazed, for he once told a woman journalist from a local newspaper that women would never be the equal of men – till they stopped cooking for them! Vishaal spent the first 13 years of his life in the benevolent shadow of a man regarded as a legend by much of the country. Is he interested in politics himself? The answer is emphatic. “I have nothing to do with politics. By the time we were born, my great grandfather was already out of it and our memories of him are of a loving man, very soft-spoken, with whom you could sit in comfort. Of the four of us (the children of brothers Bharat and Jagdeep through Moraji’s son Kanti Desai), only one has expressed any interest in politics. The rest of us are doing our own thing.” Vishaal’s ‘thing’ developed gradually. “At first, it was animation, because I was into gaming. He thought he would do animation courses. By the time he finished school and then did a B. Com from HR College, it all came together – his interest in animation, the possibility of video, a passion for films. “Much of it was fuelled by Star Wars in 1999. I was blown away by the visual effects and that pointed me in the direction of film. Because I also love live action! And at the London Film School, I picked up a camera for the first time.” He was hooked. “I’m a story teller at heart. For me, it’s about the story.” And stories are what he is telling through his short films which will finally be viewed not as a documentary but as an independent film. Like any young film-maker, he is facing budget problems, though his concept was intriguing enough for him to get some financing from the 03 proved. After all, she had declared the Emergency during which all civil liberties were suspended for more than 18 months and even judges toed the line! Vishaal, on the other hand, is still thinking things through on the film-making front – with an equal lack of compromise! MUMBHAI VIKAS SABNIS No, not the High-command! Illegal mobile network towers have created more hazards among Shivaji Nagar and Baigan Wadi residents. By Santoshee Mishra A ccording to the residents of Govandi’s Shivaji Nagar and Baigan Wadi, they are living in an environment that is radioactively charged. The notion comes from the excess of mobile network towers that have been installed in their respective localities. Commenting on the issue, Akhtar Shaikh, a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader said, “There are almost 32 Mobile towers in these areas, installed on the terraces of G+1 structures and each and every tower is illegal.” Stating that his accusations were not baseless, Akhtar produced a document, issued by the BMC’s Building and Proposal department (October, 30, 2010), which clearly stated that only four towers were cleared by the department. “If so, then why do these areas have 32 towers?” questioned Akhtar. He added, “According to the Pol- lution Control department, a mobile tower should be at least three metres away from any residential area, hospital, schools and narrow lanes. However, all these norms have been royally flouted in Shivaji Nagar and Baigan Wadi. While some of the towers are located almost next to the Shivaji Nagar Municipal School 1 & 2, others are exactly opposite the Shivaji Nagar Municipal Hospital. These towers are hazardous, as they are constantly emitting radioactive waves.” Accusing the locals who have allowed the service providers to install network towers on their terraces, Ishaque Khan a retired school teacher, said, “Since it fetches huge money, residents allow private companies to install these harmful towers on their rooftops. This they do it by conniving with the BMC officials.” “These private companies pay anywhere between Rs.3 to Rs.3.5 lakh a year to the slum dwellers for allowing them to install towers. For those, who find it difficult to even live hand-to-mouth, the money offered is nothing less than a treasure. Hence, without even considering the ill effects, people blindly accept the offer.” For the past two years, Akhtar has been fighting against this illegal installation of network towers, but to no avail. “Whenever I approach the BMC officials, they make me run from one department to another. If this is the scenario, how can a common man fight illegalities?” he questioned. When contacted, Devidas Ksheersagar, AMC of M-Ward 132, remained unavailable for comment. Explaining the hazards of radiation, a cancer specialist, said, “The harmful effects of radiation are numerous – for example cancer and brain tumour. Radiation can cause miscarriage, disrupt pacemaker’s functioning or can even induce insomnia.“ 05 XIth pass students issued transfer certificates Parents allege school only bothered about cent per cent results in XIIth By Pallavi Smart A round 18 students, who cleared their standard XI from Delhi Public School (DPS), Nerul have allegedly been issued transfer certificates, forcing them to leave the school. Municipal Commissioner(Edu.) Sd/Manager, Municipal Printing Press Byculla, Mumbai - 400 011 Save Water! Avoid Misuse of Water o keep a check on monitory irregularities and misappropriation, the state government will henceforth disburse most of its grants of various statesponsored financial assistance schemes through a biometric system. The state government disburses around Rs.1,300 crore in the form of grants every year under various welfare schemes. Currently, funds under these schemes are disbursed through post offices or co-operative banks. But, the beneficiaries were facing difficulties in accessing their branches, which are mostly situated in talukas. Apart from this, there were plenty of complaints in some cases about non-payment or delayed payment by the beneficiaries. Some cases of cheating were also reported to the government. Taking serious cognizance of this, the government took the decision to disburse the grants to beneficiaries of the various schemes through biometric system. This scheme will be initially implemented in the three districts, Thane, Kolhapur and Beed as pilot projects. Depending upon the results, the scheme will be implemented all over the state in phases. There are several financial assistance schemes, jointly launched by the Central and Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 Following complaints from beneficiaries, govt to disburse grants through biometric system state governments. For these schemes, the beneficiaries would be provided smart cards, which will be based on the biometric system, to withdraw the funds. When contacted, Labour Minister Hassan Mushrif confirmed, “From this month onwards, we have started this biometric scheme. This foolproof scheme will prove helpful to the needy beneficiaries and the wrongdoings can also be checked. After sometime, this will be executed all over Maharashtra.” Three members of Pujari gang held Mumbai CBI officer awarded President’s Police Medal T J oint Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Rishi Raj Singh, posted in Mumbai, was on Saturday awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, a statement said. In demand, out of stock Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in CITY MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 07 Azad Shrivastav | ADC Most popular book stores in city have run out of copies of ‘Emperor Of All Maladies’ Dr. Mukherjee’s book will hit the newly-opened Kitab Khana in Fort by mid-May. By Adnan Attarwala E ver since Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee’s book Emperor Of All Maladies: A Biography Of Cancer won the Pulitzer Prize (nonfiction category) the book, interestingly, has run out of stock in most of the popular bookstores in the city. According to the storekeepers, ever since the ambitious book by Dr. Mukherjee, oncologist at the Columbia University in the US, that illustrates the outline of the dreaded disease cancer and its seven millions victims across the world has won the prestigious honour, the demand among the readers has increased three-fold and is likely to increase even more once it hits back the market. “The quantity, which is actually required, is not there as it seems that the publishers have printed fewer books in India. Readers want to know when the books will be available,” commented Sunny Devarbal of Landmark bookstore. The book that lies in the ‘health and fitness’ section in the store, costing Rs.499, is being reprinted by the publishers. It is believed it will hit the bookshelves soon. However, according to the manager of Strand bookstall P.M. Shenvi, the book was popular among doctors and cancer patients when its first edition hit the stands, but now even youngsters in the age group of 25 are demanding it. Strand Book has managed to sell about 300 copies of the original American version of the book starting September last year, while the sale of the original copies, which began in December last year, has touched the 1,000 mark. “After the news of the award and the review of the book in all newspapers we managed to sell about There is demand for the book even among youngsters, says an official from a bookstore. 750 books in a week. We have highly recommended the book and we are getting good response,” admitted Shenvi. “The demand for the book was always there, but ever since it has won the award more people are asking for it. We’d placed an order for substantial amount of copies ever since it was in the news,” stated Anuja Harivallabhdas, in-house event manager at the newlyopened Kitab Khana in Fort. The book will hit Kitab Khana by mid-May. According to the staff at Oxford Bookstore at Churchgate, about 60 books had been sold off in just one week. “At least 3-4 people ask for it daily we have no option, but to tell them to wait. Some say they wouldn’t mind paying more,” a staff member revealed. [email protected] A book for all, say medicos By Shwetha Kannan D r. Prasad Dandekar, consultant radiation oncologist, international oncology services, Dr. L. H. Hiranandani Hospital, has not read the book as yet, but definitely wants to read it. “As a doctor we get carried away with tumour and cancer from a doctor’s perspective. We want to know about cancer from the other perspective, from the patient’s perspective. This will put back the human touch in us and, for an oncologist, is it very vital that the human touch is present. I feel that this book should be read by everybody, even the pa- tients and common people, as it will help them know about the process, expectations from patients and also about experiences of other people.” The same goes with Dr. Surendra Shastri, professor and head, department of preventive oncology, Tata Memorial Centre and Dr. Arun Behl, consultant oncosurgeon, Fortis Hospitals Limited. Both have not been able to read the book, but nonetheless are keen to read it and they also have certain expectations from it. “I expect to see anecdotes and a reflection of what happens at hospitals and in real life with regards to cancer and its treat- ment,” said Dr. Shastri while Dr. Behl stated, “ I want to see the layman’s description of cancer cell in the book.” “I feel that people who treat cancer patients, patients themselves and also their family should read this book as it would help them understand the process,” said Dr. Shastri. Dr. Behl, who finds this book a novel way of representing the disease added, “I don’t think this book is meant only for doctors. It has a universal appeal including the layman. Even doctors can use something from the book while talking to their patients.” [email protected] Pic for representational purposes only Better late than never Finally, WR decides to end the menace of unwanted train DJs, disturbing fellow commuters by playing loud music on their cellphones By Priyal Dave I f you often feel like throwing off your fellow commuter from the train for playing songs loudly on their cellphone – especially raunchy number like Sheila Ki Jawani or garish tracks like Dil Kay Arman – making your journey miserable, here is something that will cheer you. The activists say that the construction work for building up a windmill is being carried out since the past many months by a private builder on old divided roads that leads toward the Kaas lake and, since the width of the road is narrow, the transportation is being carried out on the valley, which is resulting in the destruction of the flowers. Located at Satara, the rare rich biodiversity of the plateau that stretches to eight kilometres holds more than 400 species of wild flowers, including Smithia hirsute, Utricularia purpurascens, snake flowers, herbs, orchids, shrubs, insectivorous plants, etc., that bloom in all their beauty. “The workers are gradually chop- The rich biodiversity of the plateau holds more than 400 species of wild flowers. ping down the mountains while carrying out the work and are also destroying the beautiful valley,” said environmentalist Paraag Shahane, who visits Kaas frequently. He claimed that about 2-3 dumpers, which are stationed at the site, that transport windmill’s parts, construction material and equipment are treading on the plateau causing great damage to the valley. “They have another access from Andhari village to go to Transportation is being carried out on the valley resulting in the destruction of flowers, say environmentalists. the site, but they don’t use that and instead go from the plateau. I even inquired with a few locals, who said to have protested but to no avail. The transportation of the material is being done mostly at night so that no one can raise objections,” Paraag stated. On the other hand, the place is also facing danger due to onslaught of tourists and all the boards put up by the forest department that mentions all rules and regulations have been destroyed by the locals and people who visit the area. The environmentalists earlier had strongly opposed the government plans to allow any conveniences for tourists at the Kaas flower plateau or declaring it as a tourism zone as the tourists had been dumping garbage recklessly all over the place. There’s also a major problem of unregulated vehicular traffic in the area. Next week, the environmental activists will be meeting to discuss the issue with the higher forest authority and devise a proper strategy on saving the valley from destruction. [email protected] Surviving against the current The risky occupation of manual sand dredging prevails in Yela village, near Dombivli By Santoshee Mishra T hey stay under water, risking their lives for more than five minutes, to take out sand. This has been their traditional business for generations – just to earn their bread and butter, an entire village resorts to manual sand dredging. The name of the village is Yela, very close from Dombivli in the central suburbs. One of the villagers, Gopinath Patil told us, “I have been doing this manual act since the past 60 years. Even my grandfather was engaged in it.” Explaining how it all stared in Yela village, Patil added, “Actually there is no perfect data available, but the reason it was started is crystal clear. Our village is near Ulhas River and farming was not enough to fulfill our daily needs.” Manual dredging takes place at Yela throughout the year, but according to Patil the occupation just about enough for them to get rid of their landlord’s loan. According to Patil, the process of dredging is very risky. But if one is aware of the low and high tides, the risk is minimised. “The villagers go on a boat called as ‘padav’. Nearly 30 of them travel on a single boat,” added Patil. Rajesh Motirao Patil (22) stated, “I began four months back. Manual removal of sand is a very skillful job. Those who have been doing it for years know how to tackle the difficult situation, but for me it is a really tough fight.” Explaining the procedure, he added, “A 40-feet iron rod is put inside the river and I need to crawl to go down. As I reach the bottom, I put down the ‘tokri’ and gather as much sand as possible. Two persons from the boat manage the rod. The entire process takes five minutes.” Rajesh admitted, “I used to get scared initially, but when I see the oldest man having the courage to fight death, my fear disappears.” Asked about the monetary part, Rajesh revealed, “A person earns Rs.600 for three-and-a-half hours, during which he takes out one-and-a-half brass of sand.” According to Rajesh, on average 10 villagers lose their lives per year. “However, no one is ready to come out of this as they are not educated kand women of this village sell vegetables in Dombivli,” concluded Rajesh. While manual dredgers of Yela earn Rs.600 per trip and the boatman earns Rs.3,000, sand is sold to builders at Rs.12,500 per brass. [email protected] Afternoon Despatch & Courier CITY www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 Meet the urban farmer By Adnan Attarwala I t is a well-established fact that today’s youth binge on junk and exotic foods available in the market, but fail to even remember the names of the home-grown ones which, the nutritionists say, is the key to a good health. Who’s got the time for the native greens, when the fast food stall is just a block away? But then there is Preeti Patil, a caterer and an employee of Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), who in her bid to nurture sensitivity towards organic farming among the citizens has created Urban Leaves -- an organic farm at the Mahim’s Maharashtra Nature Park Society (MNPS). For Preeti, it is a matter of concern that children are losing track of local food, but consume exotic foods and fruits on a regular basis, which she says is inappropriate for our weather. “Out of season fruits and vegetables could be infected. We have to increase the intake of indigenous foods like gooseberries, tamarinds and other fruits which are healthier,” says Patil. Police arrest ‘satta’ kingpin By Neel Shah L ast week, Police personnel from Police Commissioner’s special squad netted a big fish of Mumbai’s illegal betting business. On the morning of April 25, Jayanti was arrested from his apartment at Raheja Complex, situated on Malad highway, revealed a police source at Mahim police station. “Jayanti’s turnover per IPL match is around Rs.10 crore,” revealed a bookie, requesting anonymity. According to police, Jayanti’s arrest was significant, as it was the first time after Patnaik formed his special squad last month, that police were successful to arrest such a major player within the illegal betting industry. Police came across Jayanti’s number, while investigating the bookies arrested from Mahim on April 23. “Additionally, the arrested bookies also admitted that they were working for Jayanti,” informed Rakesh Sharma, head of Crime Control (CB) branch of Preeti started farming some two years ago, when she first transformed the terrace of MbPT’s headquarters into a farm by planting veggies and cereals, using recycled waste from the canteen’s kitchen that caters to about 2,000 people everyday. “We wanted to create a farm somewhere and since it was inaccessible elsewhere, we started it at the MNPS,” states Preeti, who under the aegis of NGO Vidya Varidhi Trust started the urban farm to promote home gardening and highlight the importance of organic farming and indigenous food. Lots of varieties are planted at the farm by the volunteers who grow seasoned vegetables, herbs and fruits like banana, chikoo, pineapple, lemongrass, brinjal, drumstick, spearmint, basil, etc. “One can grow about 2,000 different varieties of food at the farm. The farm is open to all those who wants to learn the trade and be healthy,” she added. Every weekend, volunteers conduct workshops for children and adults on subjects like making nutrient rich soil or ‘amrit mitti’ (dried 09 An MbPT employee, Preeti Patil, through her initiative Urban Leaves, is on a mission to spread awareness about organic farming leaves, organic waste and soil mix) or amrut jal (a fertilising agent made from cow dung, cow urine, jaggery and water), planting of seeds and vegetables or for setting up a balcony containing a farm among others. Besides the current strength of 50 members, there are students, who according to Preeti, learn a lot from the farm as they start organic farming in their own schools and backyards. “It’s highly productive to grow your own food. We can have seasoned vegetables, and by recycling waste can reduce carbon footprints. We only teach how to do it, thus forming a network, and more and more people join in,” explains Preeti, adding that due to the efforts of the volunteers, the project is gradually becoming a movement. “We now intend to spread urban farming to the lower strata of society as well,” added Preeti. Dirty street food T HOUSANDS of office-going folks across the city and suburbs have no go but to eat street food. Perhaps they have no time or inclination to find out whether the food they eat is clean or not. Several unclean process take place near the handcart which they use. The grinding of the masala takes place on the pavement. There is only one bucket of water for rinsing plates and cups. Dirty knives and hand-cut vegetables are never washed. They have no access to clean tap water and hence the same water is used for various cleaning operations. The water is never thrown away. If the BMC health staff is strict, citizens who depend on street food can have a chance to get some healthy stuff. It is clear that there is some ‘cooperation’ between the vendors and the BMC inspectors. The encroachment department of the BMC is also involved but it also does not seem to be active. A week-long drive has been going on since Saturday to ensure clean food is served. Any food-cart vendor found not sticking to health end hygiene rules would be hauled up – that’s what the BMC has said. It can be expected that there will be some action for a week – until the drive lasts. It is certain that some handcarts will be seized and unauthorized vendors chased away. What may happen is that vendors who have come to know about the drive are likely stay away for a while. So long as the BMC makes no continuing efforts throughout the year to keep street-food clean, consumers have no choice but to eat deadly unclean, dirty food. The health and the encroachment department of the BMC must be awakened from the long slumber and made to do some honest work. Afternoon DESPATCH & COURIER CAROL ANDRADE Editor A.R. Registered Office at: 98 Mittal Chambers, Nariman Point, Mumbai-400 021. Vol. XXVII No. 33 T HE ugly turn of events in the Public Accounts Committee did not come as a surprise. The ruling combine had given enough indications of its intentions to subvert its functioning when a couple of days earlier members belonging to the Congress and the DMK had created rowdy scenes to disrupt its proceedings. The disruption was meant to ensure that the PAC does not cross-examine the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary T K Nair, Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekhar and, last but not the least, Attorney General Goolam Vahanvati. Each of these functionaries had a case to answer. But the command performance by the Congress and DMK members meant that all three got away without explaining their respective, and most questionable, roles in the 2-G scam. One does not have to detail how the above trio is implicated in the scam. Suffice it to say that as the eyes and ears of the Prime Minister they too were found wanting. Nair and Chandrashekhar failed to use the available bureaucratic channels to stop Raja from perpetrating the biggest ever scam in the history of the country. The Attorney General provided a very controversial opinion which does not stand legal, yes legal, scrutiny. Specifically, Nair and Chandrashekhar failed to prevail on top Telecom Ministry officials to not to do the illegal bidding of the Minister. Like their boss, Manmohan Singh, they too took the path of least resistance even as Raja plundered the national exchequer. But the disruption of the PAC meeting to prevent it from examining the three top officials was a mere dress rehearsal for what was to follow a few days later. It was now clear that the ruling party had decided to brazen out its numerous acts of omission and commission. Instead of feeling contrite, and submitting itself to legitimate scrutiny, the Government now seemed hell-bent on torpedoing all moves to make it accountable. The rowdy manner in which the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Murli Manohar Joshi, was ejected out by an opportunistic combine of the Congress and the DMK with footloose political operators from the SP and the BSP lending it a helping hand was proof enough that the Government was set on a collision course with the Opposition. Buffeted by an endless series of scandals, and unable to shield itself against growing public anger, the ruling party seemed to have embraced obstructionist tactics to try and put a tight lid on its misdoings. In a curious misreading of the old adage about attack being the best form of defence, a defenceless government, devoid of any sense of shame, implemented its crude strategy last Thursday to stage a coup against the Joshi-led PAC. His place was taken by Saifuddin Soz, a Congress member of the Rajya Sabha, who can now be relied upon to do the bidding of the very people who were responsible for having perpetrated the country’s biggest-ever corruption scam in the first place. By convention, an opposition member — and only from the Lok Sabha — heads the PAC. Parliamentary committees are expected to scrutinize the work of the executive in a bipartisan manner, vetting policies, examining officials, outside experts, even ministers, etc., in order to deliberate in depth on important matters. All reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General are presented to the PAC for further examination. Reports of PAC and other parliamentary committees are presented to the two Houses for appropriate action. Consensus rather than confrontation informs the working of the PAC. However, last Thursday, the Government abandoned all norms and conventions, its supporters coming to the PAC meeting only to subvert its functioning. It was deadest to suppress the draft report which had been www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 lawfully circulated to PAC members and which, for that reason alone, had found its way to the media. Expectedly, the report was critical of various worthies from the Prime Minister down who had played a role, active or passive, major or secondary, in making the 2-G scam possible. Manmohan Singh’s deviousness was brought out when his officials requested the A. Raja-led Telecom Ministry to `keep the PMO at an arm’s length.’ In other words, Singh knew that Raja was being up to no good but so long as he did not drag the PM’s name he could jolly well do what he wanted to do. And that is precisely what he did, looting the exchequer, as per the CAG report, to the tune of Rs. 1.76 lakh crores. P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister at the time, was as usual clever. He knew that spectrum was scarce and, therefore, wanted its price to be discovered through auction but he was okay in case Raja sold it on the cheap just once. Chidambaram did not deem it fit to initiate action against his DMK colleague from his home State of Tamil Nadu who had plundered the public exchequer, though as finance minister he was supposed to be the guardian of the public purse. The draft report citing file notings and other official documents also rapped senior functionaries in the PMO, the Attorney General, Goolam Vahanvati, and a number of INSIDE STORY Virendra Kapoor others. It called for steps to recover the losses from the private beneficiaries of the humongous loot, thanks to a very peculiar ‘coalition dharma’ followed by the prime minister. After Thursday’s stage-managed coup against Joshi, the draft report would be rubbished by the defenders of the scamsters. Instead, another report doing a thorough whitewash job would be adopted by the PAC by a majority vote, something which all committees of parliament are expected to avoid. But whenever the Congress Party has found itself cornered on account of its scandals, it has always turned parliamentary committees into an extension of the AICC. This was the case in the Bofors JPC. The Shankaranand-led JPC on Bofors did a fine job of putting a tight lid on the scam, though everyone, including everyone in the Congress Party, knew who the real culprits were. And the one on the Harshad Mehta scam did not have an unkind word to say about then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh who, when warned about Mehta’s misdoings, shrugged his shoulders and told the Rajya Sabha that “I do not lose sleep if the share markets go up or down.” . Now, you can trust the luminaries of the Government to emerge unscathed from the captive PAC. As for the JPC on the 2-G scam, do not expect it to fix responsibility on the perpetrators of the humongous loot. The Congress members would ensure that it too goes the PAC way. After all, we have a gentleman prime minister who does not take bribe in money but insists on the biggest bribe of them all, that is, the prime ministerial gaddi, to preserve which he is ready to violate every norm, every convention. Pelting the parliamentary democracy so very crudely to retain power was last witnessed in Indira Gandhi’s Emergency. More equal than others S HOW me the face, I will show the law. Whajhat Habibullah, the newly-appointed chief of the National Minorities Commission, has been accorded the status of a full-fledged Union Cabinet Minister. His predecessors, including the immediate one, Mohammed Shafi Querashi, were only given minister of State status. Clearly, Habibullah, the 1968 IAS officer of the J and K cadre who had was earlier the Chief Information Commission, is a favourite of the UPA bosses. And had to be treated at par in pay, perquisites and official protocol with senior ministers. Fallout of forged CD W HOEVER undertook to drag members of the higher judiciary in the controversial CD, which seemed to target the wellknown father-and-son duo of famous lawyers, Shanti and Prashan Bhushan, is most likely to get into trouble. For, aside from the fact that the Bhushans are known to doggedly pursue their traducers, a number of Supreme Court judges are said to have drawn the attention of Chief Justice S H Kapadia to the mischievous attempt to obstruct the judicial process by falsely implicating one of the judges in the forged CD. The CJI is said to have taken a stern note of the obnoxious CD and is said to have initiated an independent inquiry to pinpoint the real culprit. Of course, the needle of suspicion is firmly pointed towards the political orphan who has been desperately reminding the Congress leadership of his existence by gratuitously indulging in such dirty tricks. Meanwhile, the loudmouth lawyer who had challenged the allotment of the NOIDA farmhouses by the Mayawati Government on the ground that he had not been allotted a better located one has become a subject of much ridicule in legal circles. While he went to town about his court case against the poor location, he failed to inform the media that the case had been dismissed by the Allahabad High Court. He made it out as if the case was still under the court’s consideration. It may be recalled that the said lawyer had become a law officer of the government in UPA-I as part of an underhand arrangement which allowed Lalu Yadav to go scot free in the disproportionate assets case. In UPA-II, he was not considered for such an appointment. Cricketers for money T HE more, the better. Within minutes of India winning the World Cup, the BCCI announced a special payment of Rs one crore to every member of the team. Apparently, this was not good enough for our poor-rich cricketers. So, they successfully represented for the amount to be doubled. Notably, both Dhoni and Tendulkar, who rake in big bucks from endorsement fees for various products and services, took the lead in pressing for the higher amount. Now, Dhoni and Tendulkar are not the only ones to think that cricket is a gravy train. Even former cricketers are out to milk it for what they can. That would explain why the former Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan, has dragged the BCCI to court claiming that Rs. one crore was his fees as a member of the IPL council meetings. Pataudi attended in all four meetings of the IPL council. Even former American presidents do not charge that kind of money as appearance or speaking fees. This is not all. Sunil Gavaskar has told the BCCI that he should be paid Rs five crore per annum for joining the IPL governing council! Afternoon Despatch & Courier MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 Blown out of proportion WITH reference to the article by Tavleen Singh (Jaitapur row: A misguided protest and a meaningless tragedy, ADC, Apr 21). It is satisfying to know that our sentiments and our views have been published in the article. There is no protest against the Jaitapur project by the people. The Shiv Sena and a few so called NGO’s have spreading negative and false informationdevoid of any scientific backing, amongst the villagers of Jaitapur. The newspapers are publishing the same false information. The chief officer of the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project, Jain is also not responding to these false and baseless rumors or dismissing them. His silence is proving to be a negative publicity. It is important to note that none of the villagers are losing their cultivable land because of the said project. The land acquired by the Government is barren, uncultivable land. The Atomic Energy Commission has taken into consideration the minimal amount of pollution which may be caused due to the project. It is only due to the rivalry be- should falter to take severe action against the culprits. The civil and police administrations should be suitably sensitised and humanised. It will be pertinent if a helpline is established and advertised. The teachers, both male and female, should do their best to instill systematic temper among the students. Religious leaders should cleanse religions of obsolete rituals and superstitions. The women should be authorised through free quality education and proper job opportunities and further should be helped to become professionals. — K.V. Raman, Malad (W) Review the agenda UNWANTED HULLABALOO: It’s only the Shiv Sena and a few other NGOs who are against the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project tween Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Industrial Minister, Narayan Rane that the Shiv Sena opposing the JNPP. Kokan Vikas Aghadi in its 31st conference held at Raipatan, Rajapur has registered its support to the JNPP. With this project, India will become a super power, and this is not going down well with some nations, who in turn are providing financial support to the so-called NGOs for protesting against JNPP. It is im- portant to note that for the past more than 75 years, many oil/ gas stations are functioning in Chembur, though being highly dangerous and explosive, they are smoothly functioning and no one has said a word against it. It would be in the best interests of everybody if Shiv Sena studied the nuances of the JNPP more closely and scientifically, and then made a hue and cry. Are women safe? Gender predisposition SO the BCCI has quietly chosen Duncan Fletcher of Zimbabwe as the coach for Team India and it is claimed that he is ‘the best available coach’, even if he may not be the best at the job. If one looks at his track record, it is clear that his successful stint with the English cricket team for some eight years from 1999 to 2007, during which period he helped it to regain the Ashes from the Australians in 2005 THE railway police are worried. In the last two months, three women’s bodies have been found on railway premises in the last one and half months. trains have been a ‘safe’ place to dispose off bodies. Time and again, such incidents have been reported in the news and no serious step is taken to curb them. The image of the city is in doldrums due to frequent murders in the heart of the city and to add salt to the injury, murder incidents in the Railway premises clearly gives the impression that the image of the city is going from bad to worse. It is time to protect women. Unless the culprits are brought to books with speedy steps, the position will go out of hand in the Metro. Go all out and bring the culprits to book to make things move at a faster pace and give the women commuters the confidence to travel by Railways fearlessly. HARYANA has become infamous owing to the inhuman mindset of certain doctrinaire sections of the society towards their own womenfolk. In name of ‘honour’ they go to the degree of killing their daughters and sons devoid of any clemency. It is high time that political parties, media, intelligentsia, social organisations, activists and other rightthinking people come to the fore and take a tough stand against these socially regressive forces. The state government, without indulging into any ‘vote-politics’ Cleaning drive after a gap of 16 years, has weighed in his favour though he is already 62 and had not played many Tests. To his credit, it is being said that he is known for his analytical skills and is a no-nonsense toughie. The English team had reached the nadir in international cricket when he took over as its coach and in contrast he has Team India which is at its zenith now. It should, therefore, be a lot easier for him to help the team to maintain its record and be at the top for a long time. One hopes that he will conduct himself with the Team India like Gary Kirsten and not his Australian predecessor who specialized in rubbing players at the wrong ends. — Dr. V. Wedding gifts! — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada IT is really very heartening and even encouraging to see pani-puri wallahs wearing head caps, gloves and serving pani-puri in paper plates! Surely the consumer resistance in Mumbai has achieved a great impact. But why single out panipuri stalls alone? There are thousands of vada pav, bhelpuri and LETTER OF sandwich shops which THE DAY must be strictly supervised and asked to fall in line with pani-puri stall discipline in hygiene and sanitation. Once all street side food vendors follow this culture of hygiene and sanitation, precious lives will be saved as most of the office going poorer sections and school children depend on these vendors for their mid-day meals and snacks. IT is hardly surprising that postscam, Telecommunications Minister, Kapil Sibal wants to draft a new telecom policy to replace the one that was set 12 years ago. Sibal does not face some of the challenges NTP faced, especially the challenge of increasing the tele-density in the country. The industry has over delivered on targets, with 154 phones today for 100 people in urban areas and 30 phones (against a target of four) for every 100 people in rural India. ADDITIONAL Solicitor-General D.J. Khambatta deserves the highest civilian award for his invention that the wealth of Kripashankar Singh running into crores of rupees is mostly received as gifts during son’s wedding. It is utterly fallacious that such a colossal sum was given as gifts, and if it is really so, the layman would like to know as to what is the ‘quid pro quo’ between the donors and the honorable top boss of Mumbai Congress. Justice Karnik’s observation that in weddings generally expenses are more and whether they were reported in the IT return is a telling commentary on the absurdity of the justification of the wealth accumulated. It is ridiculous on the part of Kripashankar Singh for feeding his counsel that wealth amassed by unscrupulous methods as amount received as gifts during wedding. — K.R.P. The wedding of the century reminded us of the last century wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, which unfortunately ended in controversy and the tragic death of Diana. Kate Middleton is as beautiful as her late Mother-in-law and is the toast of the world today. William and Kate make a beautiful couple and here is wishing the royal couple lots of happiness and marital bliss in the coming years. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon(W) Arms drop THE disclosure by Kim Davy and Peter Bleach is a shocker. It is tragic that two governments, Britain and India, have apparently followed undemocratic ways regarding the arms drop. There are a lot of questions that have to be answered by the Indian government regarding the escape of Kim Davy. With regard to Bleach’s observation, the jail conditions and the plight of the prisoners in Indian prisons require serious overhauling. After 64 years of independence, we are still backward in prison reforms. Prisoners languish for years without a fair trial. The disclosures indicate the massive corrupt practices that have percolated Indian democracy. The Centre has to come out with the truth even if it is embarrassing. Blame-game should not be resorted to. The Congress is blaming the BJP regarding release of Peter Bleach in 2004. But the Congress refuses to clarify the arms drop in 1995. With such an irresponsible attitude, the country seems to be heading for chaos. — Harischandra Parshuram, Juhu the story is newsworthy, but not for the obvious reasons. As recently as six months ago, Singh would have greeted the news of his interrogation by the investigation with irritation and perhaps mild amusement. After all, politicians and bureaucrats demanding illegal gratification from corporate bigwigs for quid pro quo, was par for the course. Moreover, his political brethren had routinely been caught in financial irregularities and had escaped with nothing more serious than a temporary suspension. Things are different now, however. The fact that powerful politicians like A. Raja and Suresh Kalmadi have actually been arrested and put behind bars has very badly shaken up our political class. Singh must be a deeply worried man; and busy compiling a list of scapegoats he can pass the buck to. In the name of captive coal block allotment the country has been robbed of Rs 26 lakh crore. And most stupendous fact is that it did not just happen under the Prime-ministership of Manmohan Singh, it happened in his very own ministry. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Coal Scam. Coal is called black gold and black diamond but this natural national resource of India has been gifted away for free by this government to its favourite corporate houses and middlemen who are so dear to it. Let us see how the biggest ever loot in Indian history take place. Indira Gandhi had in 1973 nationalised coal. This had ended the black marketeering of coal and coal had become available at government notified rates all over the country. But Manmohan Singh has opened the coal coffers to private players thus harming the cause espoused above. It was a minister who did the 2G scam. The PM was not even aware of it. Adarsh and Commonwealth loot too were others’ mire. But who will now take the fall for the Mega Scam in Coal Afternoon Despatch & Courier while he was the Coal Minister? The public would surely want to know this from him. This scam is registered in government files themselves and the figures therein are shouting from the rooftops that the swindlers have had the biggest day yet. This is the tale of 2006-2007 when Shibu Soren was in jail and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was holding the coal ministry. In this period Dasi Narayan and Santosh Bagdodiya were ministers of state for coal. It was under the Prime minister that the coal ministry gave out the maximum number of captive coal blocks free of cost. The most glaring and blatant fact is that the coal mines were given out free at the lower than nominal cost of Rs. 100 royalty per ton of coal that would be extracted. It was done at a time when the market price of coal was over Rs. 2000 per ton. When this issue was brought to the notice of the Parliament, the government ignominiously declared that it would not allocate coal blocks further without amending the Mines and Minerals Act, 1957, which would bring in the clauses pertaining to open bidding process. Also, again when the Bill was moved in the Rajya Sabha it was agreed that no further allocation of coal blocks would be undertaken unless both the houses passed the Bill into an Act. Though it was passed in the Rajya Sabha, it was deliberately stalled in the Lok Sabha for four years, and it could become an Act only in 2010. In the meanwhile the government in the most sinister manner, breached its promise to the Parliament and the allocation of free coal blocks continued surreptitiously. Actually, there was a deep conspiracy behind this ploy to keep the Bill pending in the Lok Sabha. The amendment to the Bill unambiguously envisaged that from the date of its passage, allocation of mines or minerals would be brought under the umbrella ambit of a fair open bidding process. Thus, had the Bill not been kept hanging in a lurch, the government would not have been able to propitiate its favourite private companies. Thus, in this period coal blocks to the tune of proven reserves of 21.69 billion tons was given away free to private companies and also middlemen. The Prime minister Manmohan Singh was the coal minister during this period and all this bungling and embezzlement happened under his very nose, maximum number of blocks were squandered under him only. Manmohan Singh gave away 63 blocks for free. But why did he do so? During these four years (2006-2010) almost 175 blocks were gifted to brokers and capitalists of different shades. Actually apparently, the magnitude and the seriousness of the matter and scam do not catch the eye so ‘Chauthi Duniya’ decided to estimate the monetary loss inflicted upon the exchequer because of this government largesse. www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 DILLI KA BABU In Nitish’s footsteps BIHAR chief minister Nitish Kumar’s radical approach towards curbing corruption in government has evidently found many admirers. When the Nitish government passed a bill in 2009 which empowered it to confiscate personal properties of tainted bureaucrats, it was widely welcomed. That Nitish ensured that the law was also implemented has won him accolades and his re-election as chief minister. Now the Madhya Pradesh government has passed a similar bill, which gives it absolute powers to appropriate properties of babus who aggregate wealth through corrupt means. The new Special Courts Bill 2011 will ensure expeditious disposition of corruption cases against government officers ranging from the village patwari to the chief secretary in specially accredited courts. The government’s concern over rising corruption in the state is obvious. A ‘topless’ tale SEVERAL weeks ago (Dilli Ka Babu, Feb 13, 2011) this column had pointed out the delay in filling the CMD’s position at the Punjab & Sind Bank. Now more than nine months since the post fell vacant, the Prime Minister’s Office and finance ministry continue to be at loggerheads, unable to decide whether to abide by or ignore the tradition of appointing a Sikh banker. But this is not the only appointment which is hanging fire. According to sources, there are a number of high-level banking vacancies that need to be filled, even as the files continue to shuttle from one ministry to the other. Sources point out that it took more than nine months before Sushil Mahnot was named the new CMD of Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi). The situation, we learn, is no different at Nabard, where despite conducting a stream of interviews with candidates since last year, the government has yet to make up its mind. Anna is Simply Anna Hazare Tensions in Ivory Coast Dr. Manish Kumar new face of activism and recharged politicization. But it seems to be tested as to how long the youth is ready to go that extra mile with Anna. It now seems feasible that a Lokpal Bill will get enacted in the Parliament but will it put paid to corruption? The battle may be won, the war is protracted. Interestingly, a movement of 4 days is being pre- N the sidelines of Anna Hazare’s movement to root out corruption from the body politic of India, the youth was found saying that they have not seen Gandhi or Jayprakash Narayan and that Anna is their Gandhi and he is their JP. These are indubitably welcome signs of repoliticisation of the urban youth that has lent the greatest deal of support to Anna’s movement. In the aftermath of introduction of neo-liberal economic system in the country, successive governments have tried to bulldoze the youth with strong administrations of purely consumption based ethics. Now that the ministrations of inactivity and recession from mainstream, as planned by the political parties, which though have youth wings but have clipped their wings, seem to have lost their virility the urban youth has represented a sented as a full-fledged revolution. It has become almost customary now to liken Anna with JP. Well, Anna must be credited for infusing a spirit of activism in a youth that was almost in deep slumber. So people see Anna’s Jantar Mantar gathering as a reminder of the JP movement. Also Anna has given vent to the pub- O lic anger over the spate of scams unearthed successively, almost at an overwhelming rate. But the comparison with JP ends there. The difference with JP is like the vast expanse of air between earth and sky. JP was an original political and social thinker and philosopher. Anna is just an activist. Anna and his civil society allies have limited objective. Of getting a strong Lokpal Bill passed, while JP aimed for total revolution. The most striking difference is that while Anna himself may be called the originator of this movement JP did nothing like that. Anna sat on hunger strike and the media and interment coverage and connectivity gave the movement its steam. JP on the other hand was the unanimous choice of the students who were already agitated and once he took the invitation and decided to lead the movement the very nature of the movement took a radical turn and became the biggest mass agitation in independent India. JP admitted to be the leader as he thought that the govt had failed to insure the interests of the poor masses. He was not only supported by urban educated youth but also by the rural peasantry, working and toiling classes of India. In the elections last Novem- ber both the incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and the challenger Alassane Ouattara declared victory in a tight election. The sequel of incidents led to tension and farrago in Ivory Coast. Later the election commission de- clared Alassane Ouattara the winner. United Nations (UNO) also accepted his victory while Gbagbo was not ready to leave the post. The continuous struggle between the two has claimed thousands of lives. Ban Ki Moon expressed his apprehensions as the news broke out that around 800 people were killed in a town of Ivory Coast. The workers of UNO recovered hundreds of dead bodies. The officials of military force of Alassane Ouattara reported the death of 160 people in the city. According to UNO, firing took place near Presidential Palace that was in control of Gbagbo. One major reason of clash was, the Central Bank of Ivory Coast supported Ouattara giving him control over state reserves previously governed by Gbagbo. Indeed, it was seen as political and financial pressure to oust Gbagbo from his post. Significantly, the independent Election Commision declared Alassane Ouattara as the winner. His victory was supported by United Nations too. On the contrary, Ivory Coast Constitutional Council stood against Ouattara’s victory. Many big leaders including Nicholas Sarkozy appealed Gbagbo to leave the post. Most of the people who left the country were pro-Alassane Ouattara. Yet, most analysts feel that ‘technically looking at the market, cement shares may be avoided for investment for the time being’ reports Manik K. Malakar C ement is a vital part of the Indian economic scenario. Not only is it a part of the ‘Core Sector’ that is a priority for the government, but cement companies like ACC, Ambuja Cements, India Cements etc. are also a vital component of the equity market indices. And while the cement sector had passed through a rough phase in the past several years, it appears that cement is on the upswing in Q4 FY11 and prospects could be good in FY12. “We expect cement players to report a sharp improvement Quarter-onQuarter in profits due to higher cement prices, volume and the positive impact of operating leverages,” say Ravindra Deshpande and Ravi Sodah, analysts with Elara Capital. “Cement demand showed initial signs of picking up over February and March 2011,” say Jinesh Gandhi of Motilal Oswal. However, some feel that Volume growth for the sector is likely to be modest due to unavailability of sand, political uncertainty in AP, as well as projects that involve Japanese technical and financial assistance are facing problems, according to inputs from Elara. Thus, It is due to this reason that people buy gold, silver etc on this day and that the Goddess Laxmi is worshipped. India, the world's largest consumer of the yellow metal, will celebrate Akshaya Tritiya on May 6, a day when demand for bullion tends to go up. Traders continue to stock silver for the festival and wedding season. After Dhanteras, we find the highest sales of Gold and Silver coins on Akshaya Tritiya. Also, since we have one of the largest variety (per se of shapes and purity), the demand for our coins is high. In India the traditionally big buyers of gold for religious reasons are being put off by higher gold prices. Instead Indian bullion merchants report a switch to silver. Silver has always been ‘poor man’s gold’. But this time the poor might be getting a better deal than the rich. The long-term average silver-to-gold price ratio is 15 while in the present market it is over 60; the potential for silver prices to quadruple is there, and way outperform the gold price to the upside. With Bullion sparkling like never before, India is bracing for an onslaught of investment rush in the coming festive season. International spot gold prices broke through $1,500 for the first time and silver hit a 31-year high, supported by a weak dollar and concerns over a sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone. As gold and silver increasingly become treated as money again, by financial markets, then this old ratio can be expected to reassert itself. Silver has long been neglected because everybody could afford gold. Now that is changing and the price of silver will go up because rising demand is not matched by sufficient immediate supply. Gold prices recovered partially on Wednesday afternoon following firm overseas markets, though a stronger rupee kept the upside in prices limited, and traders continued to stock up for an upcoming festival slated this week The next mile stone for Gold will be the 1550 dollars level, followed by 1600 dollars and only a big change in the dollar direction seems to be able to halt this trend. Silver might want to take the ominous 50 dollar level out, after which people might start talking of 60, 70 or even 100 dollars, as this strike has been asked in the brokers a few times now. It all sounds so simple, but it’s probable not. Good Times Ahead For Cement Sector, But Stocks Prices Still Not Attractive MUMBAI | MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 Continued from pg 13 « approximately 80%, vis-à-vis approximately 72% in the Q3 FY11 period. Going forward too, the cement sector is likely to be plagued by overcapacity till the end of 2011, according to analysis by Motilal Oswal. But, there are several extraneous factors that will affect margins for the cement sector in FY12. “Besides inflation and the monsoons, the important factor is that of coal prices during the year,” says K Jayaraman – Consultant and Equity research advisor, Bonanza Portfolio. Coal prices are on the upswing for both domestic as well as imported coal. “Further increase in coal price would affect the prices of cement marginally,” says Jayaraman. Also, due to slack demand, the increase in coal prices may not be able to be passed on to the consumer fully. Other input costs like power, fuel etc. could also increase during the year, according to inputs from Bonanza. For any commodity, price is vital and cement is no exception. From a low in December 2010, prices have started to recover in the Q4 FY11 period. Prices recovered on an average of Rs. 13 to Rs. 15 per bag of cement at a national level. While prices improved across the country, the price hike was noticeable in the Northern Central and Eastern regions. “The price recovery was driven largely by production discipline and recovery in demand,” says Gandhi. And it is this production discipline that is leading to better realisations for the sector. “Production discipline leads to sharp price hikes across regions; prices in most regions are at last year’s peak or at all-time high levels,” say Prasad Baji and Navin Sahadeo of Edelweiss in a note on the sector. In fact analysts are surprised by the production discipline that has been shown by the industry to date. There are reasons for this. First, the low EBIDTA per tonne (in Q2 and Q3 FY11) as well as the benefits that production cuts brought in Q4 would lead to production discipline. Thus in March 2011, the average prices of cement were approximately Rs. 256 per bag (one bag of cement is usually of 50 kilograms). After hitting a high in that month, prices have corrected across the country with the exception of the Southern region, according to a survey by Edelweiss. In the Northern region prices have corrected by Rs. 5 to Rs. 13 per bag and dealers expect a further correction in prices. In the East prices have also corrected by Rs. 5 to Rs. 13 per bag and further pressure is expected. ‘Demand is expected to remain low in West Bengal on account of state assembly elections in April–May 2011,’ was the input If results of a survey are an indication, then there are good times ahead for the cement sector in FY12, and at least confidence is there for the sector. Typical drivers for cement demand like capital and infrastructure spending are expected to be intact in FY12. “While cement manufacturers expect demand condition to be robust, their profit expectations remains muted,” says Sanketh Arouje, leader of the Economic Analysis Group at Dun & Bradstreet India. A majority of respondents of a survey carried out by them, expect capital spending to increase. D&B’s Sectoral Outlook Report is a survey based analysis to highlight the key issues and concerns prevalent amongst the corporates regarding their outlook of the business environment in FY12. Major growth drivers for the sector in the year will be spending on infrastructure and growing demand for housing. from Edelweiss. In the South demand is sluggish and is expected to be subdued. While prices have been flat in Bangalore and Madras they have increased by Rs. 5 per bag in Hyderabad. And finally in the West, prices are under pressure in Maharashtra and in Gujarat. Analysts have also pegged that demand in FY12 will be better than in FY11 due to the low base effect. To highlight this point analysts mention that in an average year cement demand grows at approximately 1.25% of the GDP. In FY11 it was just 0.6 times GDP growth. “For FY-12 there would be a marginal surplus in the first half that may be offset during the second half of the year” says Jayaraman. Depending on the government’s expenditure on infrastructure, demand could improve during the second half of the year, he continued. However, analysts are divided as to how the sector will fare in FY12. “We believe the worst is behind us and expect gradual improvement in operating performance,” says Motilal Oswal’s Jinesh Gandhi. He expects that cement prices will be buoyant at least till the second quarter of FY12. “However, valuations for all stocks, at revised earning estimates, are not compelling,” say Edelweiss’ Baji and Sahadeo. “Cement as a sector is not so fancied by investors,” says Jayaraman. Prices of companies that are part of the cement sector have been on the upswing in the last two years. “The leaders of the industry like ACC, Ambuja Cement and Ultra tech have more than doubled in their stock price in the last 18 to 24 months,” he continued. “Technically looking at the market, cement shares may be avoided for investment for the time being,” concludes Jayaraman. If results of a survey are an indication, then there are good times ahead for the cement sector in FY12, and at least confidence is there for the sector. « BANKING Dena Bank Seeks To Increase Deposit Base By A Business Reporter Garnering of resources, in the form of deposits, is an important priority for the banking sector in India and PSU Bank Dena Bank also seeks to increase fund with the bank in the form of deposits. More than half-a-dozen AMCs are planning to come up with the funds and a couple of funds are set to be launched. The popularity of ETFs has been growing worldwide in the past two years. Merely 10 gold exchange traded funds registered a growth of 176 per cent to Rs 4,400 crore from Rs 1,590 crore a year ago. About four years ago, there was only one gold ETF in India with AUM of Rs 96 crore. However, the penetration of ETFs is relatively very low in the Indian MF market as it comprises of only 1.2 per cent of total AUM. The ETFs, in developed markets, contribute a share of over 60 per cent of total AUM. You Need Not Wait For March JAGDEEP KAPOOR is a Brand Guru and CMD of the successful Samsika Marketing Consultancy Fast track during slow down Brand Marketing strategies to grow The market is in the mind. If you think there is a market you would be able to capture it or be a significant participant in it. If you think there isn’t a market then you start of in a pessimistic note which may not yield positive results hence to begin with, you must be a believer and have a positive attitude towards market and marketing. In the last few months there has been a constant talk, nationally or internationally of a slow down. However, it is more psychological than real in my opinion. Hence, the need today to share with you the ways in which you can be on the fast track through brand marketing strategy tips during this psychological slow down. My recommendations are: 1) Be fast in your mind, don’t slow down Many a time a self fulfilling prophecy comes alive. If you behave and think slowly, actually you are slowing the pace and blaming it on the market. Hence, you need to think fast and be proactive in your marketing strategy. The key to this is constant and quick responsiveness to the needs and opportunities in the market. 2) Drive the market, don’t get driven by it There comes a time in every company when market conditions and circumstance seem to overwhelm the marketeers thoughts and there is a tendency to follow a herd instinct. If everyone is accepting the circumstances and following the beaten path, you need to look at the whole scenario differently and turn the tide rather than getting drowned by a tidal wave. Therefore it is important to take brand marketing initiatives which are fresh and have to rejuvenate the market place. 3) Demand does not decline, it shifts When we feel that the market has got saturated and come to the conclusion that demand has dried out, we must think again. It could be a mental trap which you are falling into. Infact, it could just happen that the consumer now wants a different form and may be there is a different segment waiting to be tapped. All these are shifts in demand, and not declines. 4) Don’t panic and press the price button Most marketeer inappropriately panic and cut prices. It is like starting a nuclear war. Price cuts could be resorted to only as a last resort after all marketing initiatives have been tried. Or they should be done in conjunction with other positive brand and marketing initiatives. An isolated action of price cuts could signal desperation and lead to drop in sales. Hence, it is advisable to stay cool, collected and explore all the brand and marketing strategies before jumping into price cuts. 5) Have a sound brand marketing strategy Most companies which bear the brunt in these times are those who do not have a sound brand marketing strategy. Hence, they wilt and sink at the first sign of the storm. Your brand marketing strategy should be on a strong foundation. Copyright © 2010, All rights reserved. Jagdeep Kapoor can be contacted at [email protected] In India a majority of the people do not know what is tax planning and the importance of the same. Tax planning according to some people is when their employer asks to show investment proofs so that they save tax on salary. Usually this information comes at the end of year. Most often we all wait till we get the last reminder from our employer and we start searching for instruments in which we get tax deduction – all this in a haste. During the last few weeks of any financial year we make hasty decisions and invest in tax saving instruments without thinking about what other criterions need attention like what is the benefit and risks involved on the investments, what are the actual returns on investment etc. In the process we end up buying products which are not right for us. I n my opinion, Tax planning should be done early and put in action over the year. This helps us in planning out the monetary outflow in tax saving investments over the entire year instead of contributing through a lump sum at end of year. It also gives us ample time to understand and analyze different options that are specific to your financial situation. Besides that, had you invested at the start of the tax planning season, i.e. April, you would have also earned a full year’s interest on the investments you have made. Considering the yields on five year FDs, your money would have grown close to 8% in the meanwhile. You will also have various investment options at your disposal that open only for a few days during a year like Infra bonds, 54EC capital gain saving bonds etc. So start your tax planning now!! Let’s take a brief look at the various heads under which you can claim tax deduction PUBLIC PROVIDENT FUND While seeking advice on investment avenues, you are likely to come across PPF which is the most the famous tax saving instrument amongst taxpayer as both contribution and returns are exempt from taxes. PPF gives you guaranteed return and it is one of the safest investment avenues available today. Ideally an investor should invest before the 5th of every month in PPF to earn interest for that month. Currently the rate of interest is 8% but is proposed to be hiked by 1% soon. « PERSONAL FINANCE SEJAL PATEL is a Financial Planner, Bonanza Portfolio Ltd LIFE INSURANCE This is non-negotiable especially if you have financial dependents. It is advisable to avoid buying an expensive insurance cover that tempts you by doubling up as insurance cum investment product. Stick to a pure term plan, which offers you a large cover at a very lower premium. By investing in life insurance plan, you can avail tax benefit up to Rs 1 lakh u/s 80 C. TAX SAVING MUTUAL FUND SCHEMES If you don’t have any equity exposure at all, then the best option for you is to put all your money in an ELSS. But if you have some equity exposure, then invest in both PPF and ELSS. These schemes can also earn the maximum return from 80-C list as they invest mostly in stocks. The last 5 years return from ELSS has been in range of 20-25% compounded annually compared to 8% in NSC and PPF. The limitations in ELSS are that premature withdrawal is not allowed and the risk factor is high when compared with NSC and PPF. INFRASTRUCTURE BONDS You can also look at investing upto RS 20000 in infrastructure bond to save tax u/s 80 CCF. This will be in addition to the overall tax deduction limit of RS 1 lakh under section 80C, 80CCC and 80CCD of income tax act. 80CCF is beneficial to those investor who has already exhausted there Rs 1 lakh limit u/s 80C. « BOOK LOOK ROBIN SHUKLA is a senior journalist and writer The Heart of a Leader by Ken Blanchard Jaico Publishing House Price Rs.195 The Heart of a Leader by Ken Blanchard (Insights on the Art of Influence) is a book full of pleasantly explained wisdom. Blanchard is a leadership and business expert and is known the world over for his phenomenal bestselling book, The One Minute Manager, which he has co-authored with Spencer Johnson. This book is easy on the mental and visual faculties, and has 75 quotes in all, of which Blanchard is the author or co-author of at NATIONAL SAVING CERTIFICATE It is a good medium term investment option. National saving certificate (NSC) is a 6 year small saving instrument eligible for section 80C tax benefit. Rate of interest is 8% compounded half yearly, i.e. the effective annual rate of interest is 8.16%. The interest accrued every year is liable to tax (i.e. to be included in your taxable income) but the interest is also deemed to be reinvested and thus eligible for section 80C deduction. An advantage of the NSC is that it can be pledged as security against a loan to bank/Govt. institutions. The minimum investment starts from Rs 100/- and there is no maximum limit for the investment. HOUSING LOANS You can save tax up to Rs 1.5 lakh u/c 80E and Rs 1 lakh u/s 80C if you are paying interest and principal toward an outstanding housing loan. But remember this is applicable for residential constructed within three financial years after the loan is taken. For example, if you and your spouse bought an apartment for Rs 60 lakhs and a down payment of Rs 15 lakhs, both will borrow Rs 22.5 lakhs each assuming the ownership share is in the ratio of 50:50. The overall tax deduction in your case will amount to Rs 5 lakhs (interest + principal). The tax benefit will be shared in the same ratio as the ration of the loan amount availed by the husband and wife. The idea is to give a higher ownership share and hence the higher liability to an individual with higher taxable salary. HEALTH COVER One quote reads: ‘We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.’ Here, Blanchard indicates leaders are increasingly being called upon to act as cheerleaders, encouragers and supporters and to play or assume these roles leaders have to first feel good about them. While catching people doing the things right is a powerful management concept, most leaders have a genius for catching people doing things wrong. Blanchard recommends that leaders should spend at least an hour a week wandering around their departments catching people doing things right. Here are some thought provoking passages from the book: It never hurts to toot your own horn once in a while: It’s been said that if you don’t toot your own horn, someone will come along and use it as a spittoon. CMP: Rs 365 Target Rs 465 GUJARAT Gas Company’s (GGAS) Q1CY11 results were inline with our expectations as net sales grew by 29.6% YoY to Rs5.2bn (PINCe Rs 5.2bn). EBITDA/scm was flat at Rs 3.3, however, OPM contracted by 419 bps YoY due to increased contribution of high priced R-LNG. Consequently, net profit increased by 16.9% YoY to Rs 721mn. Volume growth remains flat: GGAS’s Q1CY11 volume increased 4.1% YoY and remained flat QoQ at 3.37 mmscmd. Industrial sales were impacted marginally due to increasing gas cost, however, the volumes for CNG segment remained static. EBITDA/scm is flat YoY at Rs 3.3, however, decreased by Rs0.6 QoQ due to 15% spike in average gas cost against increase in average realisation of ~5%. High cost R-LNG contribution to increase in near future: There are concerns related to sourcing of domestic gas due to decline in output from KG and PMT fields. In light of current circumstance, GGAS has signed 1.0mmscmd contract with BGIES for CY11 and CY12. High cost gas should create pressure in maintaining margins as regular price hikes may be difficult in some segments. GGAS has already taken price hike of ~16% for its entire segment in CY10 to negate the impact of higher R-LNG cost. Expansion plans: GGAS is incurring a capex of ~Rs 1.5bn/ year to increase network in its current operational area. The company has bid for Bhavnagar and Kutch in 3rd round of CGD bidding. Valuations And Recommendation: We maintain our earning estimates for CY11 and CY12. At the CMP of Rs 376, the stock trades at a P/E of 15.4x and 14.0x and EV/ EBITDA of 10.6x and 9.5x for CY11E and CY 12E respectively. We are positive on the growth prospects of expanding CGD business which is still at a nascent stage. We maintain our ‘BUY’ recommendation with a target price of Rs 465 based on DCF. ELARA CAPITAL CALLS A ‘BUY’ ON ORIENT PAPER AND IND. CMP: Rs 59 Target Rs 75 ORIENT Paper Limited (OPI) reported a net profit of INR 775mn as compared to our estimate of INR 604mn. The profit growth was led by improved performance in the cement and electrical division. The performance of the cement division was led by robust realization improvement which mitigated the decline in volumes. The EBITDA for the quarter grew by 24.4% YoY to INR 1,304mn on the back of a sharp improvement in profitability in cement and electrical consumer durables businesses despite a loss in the paper segment. Highest EBITDA/tonne in cement amongst peers: The EBITDA per tonne for OPI stood at ~INR 1,185in Q4FY11 as compared to ~INR 843 in Q4FY11 and ~INR 771 in Q3FY11. The higher EBITDA was largely on account of the improved realizations despite lower volume sales. It has reported highest EBITDA/tone amongst the peers signifying its positioning as the lowest cost producer in the country. Cost leadership is a sustainable advantage which will ensure healthy margins vis-à-vis peers. Lower paper production hurt profitability: In Q4FY11 paper division reported a loss of INR 46mn at EBITDA level as paper production was hampered due to shifting of old machinery and increase in input cost. Going ahead, although profitability of paper division is likely to increase we have not factored in any profitability at EBIT level. OPI has announced that it plans to set up a Greenfield plant of 3mn tonnes in Gulbarga district of Karnataka. The company has completed the limestone prospecting study and is in possession of half the land. The project is expected to cost INR ~17.2bn. The equipment is likely to be ordered by Q2FY12 and the commissioning time is estimated to be Q2FY15. Funding is likely to be done at a debt-equity ratio of 1:1. The company plans to part fund the equity component through INR 687mn warrant issue to the promoters. OPI is planning to issue 12mn shares at INR 57.25/share. Maintain Buy with price target of INR 75: We believe cement earnings have peaked out for the sector with severe cost increases and realizations are expected to be under pressure. OPI has the highest cushion against fall in the cement prices due to its competitive cost structure and diversified earnings stream. Given the current valuation of the stock, which is reeling at EV/tone of ~USD45 on FY12 capacity, we believe, there is little downside as it is trading at more than 65% discount to its large cap peers. We expect the valuation gap to narrow down as competitors will face the cost increases going forward and OPI leads profitability with its low cost advantage. We reiterate our ‘BUY’ rating on the stock with a target price of INR 75. 20 Afternoon Despatch & Courier « TAX SOLUTIONS ANAND TIBREWALA is a CA and Senior Partner at the leading Chartered Accountancy firm, AD & Company NSS withdrawals are taxable I had invested in National Saving Scheme way back to avail tax deduction. This scheme is fetching reasonable returns. However, I need the money for some other important objectives. Please advice what are the tax implications on the withdrawal of the money from National Saving Scheme? — Avtar Ramani, Mahim Any money withdrawn from the balance lying in the National Saving scheme is taxable in the year of withdrawal i.e. the principal amount deposited and the interest earned thereon. The scheme also provides for deduction of TDS from the amount withdrawn. If you wish that the TDS should not be deducted, then you need to furnish declaration in form 15 – G to the postal authorities along with the withdrawal request. I am an income tax assessee. During the last financial year I had deducted some TDS out of various payments made by me. However due to tight cash flow I could not deposit the TDS with the Government authorities within the due date. However, I intend to deposit the same before filing my return of income. Please let me know whether this would have any implication on my tax return? — Rana Dalvi, Borivali As per Income Tax Act if TDS is deducted and not deposited in the same financial year then the deduction, of the whole of expenses would be denied i.e. the entire expenditure on which TDS is not deposited would be added to your taxable income. The same deduction would be allowed in the financial year in which the TDS is deposited. There is only one exception to this provision i.e. TDS for the month of March could be paid before filing the return of income and the expenditure still would be allowed to be deducted. I have two self occupied house properties in my name in two different cities. I am occupying one of the properties and the second is occupied by my parents. I have taken two separate housing loan for these properties. I have paid Rs. 1,10,000/- and Rs. 60,000/- on these loans during the last financial year. Please advice me whether I can claim the benefit of Rs. 1,50,000/- against my interest payments? — Raja Patel, Thane As per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961 if one assessee is owning more than one house property, then he can claim only one as self occupied and the other property is deemed to be let out. Accordingly, if you have chosen one property of your choice as self occupied, then the interest paid for the said property can be claimed as deduction for interest payment. The other property would attract deemed notional rent and hence the other interest payment could be claimed as deduction against the other property. However, you cannot combine the interest payment. Now, he also added that I should go for a top up policy and not a new policy from another company. What is a top up policy and is it advisable to go for the same? — Harshad Meswani, Lokandwala Complex, Kandivali Top up policy is like an add-on policy to your existing health insurance or mediclaim insurance policy. A Top up policy will take care of claims over and above the limit of your existing health insurance coverage. For example, if you have a mediclaim policy of Rs. 5 lacs and you take a top up policy of Rs. 2 lacs. Now, there is a medical cost which comes up to Rs. 6.5 lacs for which you will make a claim. Your existing policy will accommodate only an amount of Rs. 5 lacs out of the Rs.6.5 lacs. The balance Rs.1.5 lacs can be claimed under the top up policy amount. You can claim under a top up policy, only after you have exhausted the cover limit in your existing health insurance policy. The premiums for a top up policy are always low as compared to the basic mediclaim policy and hence off late many people have started buying the same. It is a good idea to go for a top up policy rather than spend a high amount of premium on taking another health insurance cover. MANOJ ASWANI is VP at MyInsurance Club.com « INSURANCE Why did some insurance companies de-list a number of hospitals from their network of hospitals? It is a little difficult to go through a list of hospitals that fall in your health insurance company network list and then admit the person there. — Mukul Mishra, Malad West There was an opinion that some hospitals have a different rate chart for customers with Mediclaim / health insurance policy, which is much more than that for customers without Mediclaim. This was leading to a claims payout made by the insurance companies against the premiums collected for the same, thereby leading to a huge loss in their health insurance portfolio. Hence the insurers were forced to create a preferred provider list, so as to curb the expenditure on them. Most medium and small scale hospitals have agreed to the rates offered by the insurance companies to remain on the preferred provider list and now quite a few large scale hospitals have agreed to them. The hospitals, who had or still haven’t agreed on the rate offered by the public sector insurance companies were excluded from the preferred list or the network of hospitals. My age is 30 years and I want to start some small savings. Please suggest which policy is better in between Postal Life Insurance Santosh Endowment and Jeevan Saral with profit? — Sejal Gupta, Ghatkopar West Postal life insurance has not been updated for quite sometime now. The sum assured limit is Rs. 100,000 only. Also, the returns which can be expected are very low. Earlier, it was a good venue because the customers did not have much option of savings and getting good returns. Between the two, Jeevan Saral is surely a good choice. It has an option of monthly premium and provides a good sum assured too. The sum assured is 250 times the monthly premium. LIC Jeevan Saral is a with-profit endowment assurance policy which means that it participates in the profits of the LIC’s life insurance business. The profits are shared in the form of loyalty additions which are terminal bonuses payable along with death benefit or maturity benefit (The author is Vice President at www.MyInsuranceClub.com, insurance comparison website in India. However in these challenging times, sales teams continue to remain adept at raising the profit margin of successful organizations all over the world. When in the field, their work truly represents the pulse of a company’s business strategy and vision for the customer. Clearly we are talking about the stereotypical sales person who thrives on targets, territories and the elusive promise of a variable commission. However the ground realities are a far cry from the glamour and money that can sometimes be associated with this profession. One could safely say that there are clear winners and then there are the strugglers who invariably buckle under the pressure of an ever stretching target in a competitive market place. So how does the successful salesperson meet and exceed his numbers time and again? A question that is often asked by the unaccomplished colleague who struggles to achieve his break even point. The key is in the system applied and not in the wizardry of luck by chance. The power to write your own pay check is gratifying and at the same time exponentially rewarding for the perseverant and the structured candidate. The start point is in understanding the difference between a transaction and a sale. For example if a customer walks into a store and buys a product with no pitch required from the sales person then this DOMINIC ARLAND is the MD of Arland Training Consultants « GUEST COLUMN does not constitute a sale, but merely qualifies as a transaction for the organization. However if the customer is unaware of his needs and the sales person applies the skill of direct/indirect suggestion to convert that latent need, then it becomes a personalized sale. Top sales teams understand this difference and spend a reasonable amount of time and money to impart this logic to their teams thus giving them a distinctive advantage over their competitors. Some sales managers leading teams would argue that irrespective of what transpires it is the sale that finally matters. In some sense one could partially agree with the crude logic in that thought process. However with the globalization of markets, the consumer has overwhelming choices that come to him with competitive benefits. We can safely say that the world is moving towards a service centric sales process, where-in the seller’s role does not end when the sale has been made, but interestingly continues long after the deal has transpired. The customer of today tends to choose sales personnel that display exemplary service skills while pitching their products for sale. Interestingly the customer may or may not buy a product depending on the displayed service standard. The inclusion of a strong after sales service contract can be the key to repeat business and a possible referral from the customer’s inner most circle. In the end the victorious sales person has learnt to build a strict discipline that employs the principles of planning, preparation, presentation, need identification and service enhancement. The mere repetition of the task time and again can assist in mastering the art of sales. © Courier Publications Private Limited. All rights reserved. It is already a multi-million bestseller. The Chronicles is a very ambitious writing project by Archer revolving around the life of Harry Clifton and his adventures between 1920 and 2020. This book spans the period from 1920 to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1940; the first twenty years of Harry Clifton's life. This one is typical Archer, a losing of virginity start, which develops into a cracker of a story later, becoming a compulsive read as you come across more plot twists which have you turning the pages even though it is well past the T Roald Dahl Phizz Whizzing Collection By Roald Dahl Diary of a Wimpy Kid By Jeff Kinney Encyclopedia of Questions & Answers Illustrated History of India Harry Potter Box Set By J.K. Harry Clifton, struggling to stay alive in the backstreets of Bristol, has to cope with the tragedy of his father’s death during World War 1. The shock only gets compounded when he learns that the man he always thought was his father and a war hero at that, wasn’t really his real father. Harry had always known since childhood that his father was killed in WW1, and this revelation that he is not the son of the man he knew as Dad, comes as a truth he hates to face but has to delve under. It comes at a time when, after losing everything in the tragedy of the war, he had only started piecing his life together. The book sees Harry trying to Unlocking priceless spiritual treasures Heroes of the Olympus: The Lost Hero By Rick Riordan Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days By Jeff Kinney he Honourable Company (A History of the English East India Company) by John Keay is an outstanding book that concerns India as much as it does Great Britain. It is an interesting and well-researched document that traces British trading, maritime and colonial history, written, albeit, in very pleasant English, with a fair sprinkling of humorous anecdotes. When it received the royal charter on December 31, 1600, the East India Company was called ‘The Company of Merchants of London trading into the East Indies,’ and the company’s ships had a simple brief – to get to the Indies for reasons of trade. They carried letters of introduction from Queen Elizabeth to the eastern princes in those faroff kingdoms they would dock at one of the Banda Islands located to the east of Indonesia. Through its 220-year-old chequered history, the Company emerged as a quasi-government having dominion over most of India, several countries across the globe. It oversaw the phasing out of absolute monarchy in Britain, controlled half the world’s trade, and had armed forces that exceeded those of most sovereign states, even as it had to countenance the presence of the most disreputable characters at home in England and in its far-flung colonies. It chaperoned Indian royalty and elevated usurpers to positions of eminence in the subcontinent to satiate its own burning ambition and its spectacular greed. As Keay states, ‘But for the Company there would have been not only no British India but also no global British Empire.’ Life’s cruel secrets are worse than wars The Secret By Rhonda Byrne Emperor of All Maladies By Siddhartha Mukherjee This week, we review some really excellent books. The Honourable Company by John Keay is about the huge commercial enterprise called the East India Company. Keeping to British shores, we have Jeffrey Archer’s Only Time Will Tell, the bestselling first of five books in the Clifton Chronicles series, while Enlightenment To Go by David Michie is a practical guide to help us dodge the stress, anxiety and depressions in life Of expansionism by ordinary tradesmen The Confession By John Grisham 21 The Enlightenment To Go by David Michie Zorba Publishers Price Rs.350 he Enlightenment To Go (The classic Buddhist oath of compassion and transformation) by David Michie is a fresh, compassionate examination of traditional Buddhist teachings as expounded by eight century Buddhist monk, Shantideva. Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, written in the eighth century, is a manual of advanced psychology and probably the world’s first self-help book, teaching how to develop specific psychological techniques and reframe our experience of reality to achieve greater happiness and inner peace. Bodhisattva describes a person who wishes to achieve enlightenment more to help free all other beings from suffering than for personal advantages or salvation, his way of life being seen as the ul- timate expression of compassion. The Guide is generally accepted as one of the greatest classics of Tibetan Buddhism that encapsulates all the advice and inspiration one may need to apply Buddha’s teachings in life’s daily. David has actually demystified the teachings of the Buddha as contained in Shantideva’s seminal work. The author has, in eighteen chapters, unravelled the ancient text to help us apply the wisdom to contemporary problems, so that genuine change of perspective, and action, and therefore state of mind, becomes possible. He has drawn from his own life’s experiences to drive home most points, making this an extremely readable book: This is not a scholarly discourse on Shantideva – there are plenty of those already. Nor does it provide a unravel the mystery behind his father’s death, at least the man who he regarded as his father. He has also to go out and search for his real father. World War II breaks out and Harry has to decide whether to continue with his studies at Oxford or enlist and fight against Nazi Germany. The uniqueness in this book is how Archer changes narration as the story progresses so readers can follow events from the perspective of key characters, and one is let in on secrets which the others in the book are not aware of. Archer is a brilliant storyteller. The book has plenty of his trademark wit and intelligence to keep readers riveted. comprehensive analysis of every one of his 800 stanzas – rather, only 75 of them. I have not slavishly followed the sequence of the verses presented in his teachings because, like a composer of a grand classical piece of music, Shantideva returned to several of the same key themes in different parts of his discourse, often with a different emphasis or turn of phrase. To enhance the practical application of his teachings for readers today, I have presented them thematically, rather in the order they appear in the Guide. Incidentally, for more than four decades, the Dalai Lama has been recommending Shantideva’s book to Buddhists all over the world, and also to those who wish to understand and experience the life enhancing philosophy of Buddhism. The chapters are short enough to be read and understood during a train commute, or during that leisurely lounging on a sofa or bed. 22 Afternoon Despatch & Courier TV GUIDE TODAY’S BEST VIEWING ARMY OF DARKNESS Through a magic spell, Ash, a modern-day discount-store employee, finds himself back in the middle ages. This would take care of any myths or misconceptions that she may be carrying about physical intimacy, and also give her an opportunity to come up with her queries, if any. Pre-marital ‘non-response’ I am going to be married soon, but when I was courting my fiancée I found that she was not getting aroused. In spite of my best efforts I was not able to arouse her and she was not affected by my touching. Is it normal? It seems that you are entering into an arranged marriage. If this is so, then what you are facing is a common problem. You are probably going too fast too soon. The sexuality of a woman is predominantly heart-centred. She needs to feel emotionally close to you for her to get aroused. I would advise you to go slow with your caressing as she may be feeling shy and awkward. Instead, you could win her heart by romancing her. Not being hasty physically, but instead understanding her hesitation, will make her feel emotionally close to you. And when this happens, she will be more than willing to share intimacy with you. If after implementing my advice you still feel that things are not warming up between both www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 Wife has dumped me! HEART TO HEART I am a 30-year-old man. I was married, have one child; but my wife has left me one year ago. She does not want to talk to me or have any relations with me. To the best of my understanding I did not hurt her ever in any way, but somehow she wants to stay away from me. What to do? Should I get into another relationship? I need love. I feel lonely. What should I do? It is important to know the reasons why your wife has separated from you, in order to know whether a reconciliation is possible or not. However, there will have to be a counsellor’s intervention so that the reasonable needs of both partners are taken into consideration before deciding. If the reasons given by her Grand Canyon mystery solved? Dr. Rajan B. Bhonsle M.D. (Bom) Consulting Sex Therapist & Counsellor Dr. (Mrs.) Minnu R. Bhonsle Ph.D. Consulting Psychotherapist & Counsellor AGE FACTOR: The age of the canyon is still a matter of debate. There are two schools of thought on the subject Scientist claims he’s finally discovered how the canyon was formed L ONDON: A seismologist claims he has finally solved the geological mystery of how the Grand Canyon was formed and it turns out it could be younger than previously thought. Professor Alan Levander, of Rice University, has discovered a giant structure deep beneath the Colorado Plateau which could explain how the dramatic landscape above was created. He said magma in a layer of the earth’s crust is forcing the top layer down and surging up to take its place, pushing up the land around the valley which forms the canyon. Professor Levander told LiveScience: “Anyone who goes to the Grand Canyon and looks down should think,”What is it that made it this way?” “The most immediate answer is water, that a river cut this canyon, but what is it that made the rock it lies in, the earth, move up?” Scientists have long been puzzled as to how the tectonically-stable plateau could be rising while parts of its lower crust are falling, a phenomenon more usually seen in mountain belts, a Mail Online, UK report has said. To discover why, he and a team of geologists analysed new data from the of mobile seismic stations known as the Earthscope Transportable Array. The observatory-quality seismographs were first set up in the West in 2004, and are moving across America in a ten-year project. Images taken from the stations revealed an unusually cold, dense region more than 120 miles deep stretching into the second layer of the earth’s crust. are valid and if her reasonable needs are not being satisfied by you in the relationship, and if you do not even admit it or do not want to do anything about it from your side, then a divorce is inevitable. In that case you need to get into personal counselling to understand yourself better before getting into another relationship. This is extremely important or else you may land up in a similar position again. It is also possible that your wife has her own issues which have nothing to do with you. In that case, if she is not willing to admit and work on her own issues, a divorce is again inevitable. In either case, it would be worthwhile seeing a counsellor to discuss the issue at length. This will help you gain an insight about yourself and about what kind of stimulus you put forth in your relationships. This will enable you to remove any contaminants that you may be bringing to the relationship and learn to contribute more positively in any relationship. You will also be able to have an ‘emotional closure’ with your wife and move on in your life on a healthy note. In a paper published yesterday in Nature, Professor Levander described how believes the anomalous structure is caused by an upsurge in magma from a lower layer, which causes the crust itself to peel off. He believes the hotter, weaker athenosphere surged upwards and invaded the stronger lithosphere above it, which includes both the uppermost crust and the top layer of the mantle. The partially-molten material expanded, cooled and solidified after it flowed upwards, putting more weight on the mantle-section of the lithosphere. This became so heavy it then peeled away and dripped down, creating a space above it. The more buoyant asthenosphere filled the gap, expanded again and caused the entire plateau to uplift, according to ‘LiveScience’. Professor Levander’s believes this ‘mantle drip’ happened in the last six million years, making it the most recent anomaly in the Colorado Plateau, a finding which could help pinpoint the age of the Grand Canyon. He told Amazing Planet: “There are generally two schools of thought on the age of the Grand Canyon - one is that it formed in the last six million or seven million years, and the other is that it has a much longer history as a canyon. Our results suggest it’s the younger date that’s more accurate.” Another seismologist, George Zandt of the University of Arizona, told LiveScience “these findings would tend to support the idea of at least a young component of the uplift.” But he said it was still possible the uplift could have happened before then, supporting the theory of a much older canyon. Professor Levander said he plans to analyse data from more seismographs to see whether he can ‘pull out more details’ on the anomaly. Afternoon Despatch & Courier MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 Morning heart attacks more severe H WEDDING FRENZY: Multi-media artist Chito Salarza-Grant wears a hat themed on the Royal Wedding as crowds of people throng to central London to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in London on Friday EART attacks are far more dangerous in the mornings than at any other time of the day, research shows. Patients struck down between 6am and midday suffer a fifth more damage to their heart muscle compared with those who have an attack later on. Scientists believe the phenomenon may be due to the changes in the body’s blood pressure, hormone levels and metabolism rates that naturally occur when a person wakes up. It is already well established that heart attacks are more likely to happen in the morning than other times of the day, but the latest study is the first to show that they are also more severe at this time of day. Scientists at the National Centre of Cardiovascular Research in Madrid, Spain, studied 811 patients who were admitted to hospital with heart attacks between 2003 and 2009. All had suffered a type of heart attack known as an ST segment elevation my- Too much internet can lead to drugs S PENDING time online increases the likelihood of a teenager taking drugs or having unprotected sex, it has been claimed. Research revealed those who are regularly glued to their screens are far more likely to engage in risky behaviour than their peers. The researchers from the Queen’s University in Canada found that young adults who logged the most hours on their computers were 50 per cent more likely to engaged in a cluster of six ‘multi-risk behaviours.’ These included smoking, drunkenness, cannabis and illegal drug use, having unprotected sex and not using seat belts, says Mail Online, UK. Research author Valerie Carson, said, “This research is based on social cognitive theory, which suggests that seeing people engaged in a behaviour is a way of learning that behaviour. Since adolescents are exposed to considerable screen time - over 4.5 hours on average each day - they’re constantly seeing images of behaviours they can then SPRING BABIES LIKELY TO BE ANOREXIC SPECTRUM www.afternoondc.in potentially adopt.” One explanation behind the findings is that a considerable amount of advertising that used to be shown on TV is now being shown on the internet. In addition, computer usage by adolescents has increased considerably in recent years. “TV and video games have more established protocols in terms of censorship, but Internet protocols aren’t as established,” Ms Carson said. “Parents can make use of programs that control access to the Internet, but adolescents in this age group are quite savvy about technology and the Internet. It’s possible that these types of controls aren’t effective in blocking all undesirable websites.” The research, recently published in the Journal of Preventative Medicine, suggests that future studies should examine the specific content adolescents are being exposed to in order to help strengthen current screen time guidelines for youth. BAD INFLUENCE? Researchers said teenagers were far more likely to see ‘undesirable’ content online than they were on TV FATAL: Research has found that those who have a heart attack in the morning suffer damage up to a fifth worse than those struck down later in the day ocardial infarction, caused by a prolonged period of blocked blood supply. The researchers gauged the severity of the attacks by measuring the levels of the enzymes creatine kinase and troponin-I, which are higher the more the heart muscle has been damaged. They found that damage to the heart was 21 per cent greater when the attack had occurred between 6am and midday. Doctors cannot yet explain why heart attacks appear to be more severe in the morning, but they believe it may be caused by natural changes in the body that occur over a 24-hour period. For example, blood pressure is at its highest in the morning and lowest at night, during sleep. Hormones such as cortisol, which increases blood sugar levels, are also in higher concentration in the morning. The body’s metabolism increases when we wake up, but at night it is comparatively slow. The trend could also be explained by the fact some people suffering chest pain at night may try to wait until morning before getting help. 25 P EOPLE born in the Spring are more likely to suffer anorexia, claim researchers. The largest study of its kind provides ‘clear evidence’ that the season of birth - and therefore the season when babies are conceived - affects the chances of getting the eating disorder. It adds to mounting evidence since the 1970s that the timing of conception and early development influences disease risk in later life. Possible factors include exposure to viruses and other infections while in the womb, sunshine levels and the mother’s eating habits. The study looked at birth dates of 1,293 anorexia patients and compared their timing with the general population, says Mail Online, UK. Oxford University researchers found an excess of anorexia births between March and June, and the least from September to October. There are around 90,000 Britons with eating disorders which often start in the early teens. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, in which sufferers make themselves sick to get rid of food, have the highest premature death rate of any psychiatric illness through suicide and long-term health damage. Erase painful memories A LL of us have wanted to erase a painful memory at some point. Now scientists claim they are on the verge of a breakthrough after finding a way to potentially delete trauma from our minds. They have discovered a link between a protein called PKM and our recollection of disturbing events, reports Mail Online, UK. Their study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, could have profound implications for traumatised people. Lead researcher David Glanzman, from the University of California, Los Angeles, said, “I think we will be able to alter memories someday to reduce the trauma from our brains. Not in the immediate future, but I think we will be able to go into one’s brain, identify the location of the memory of a traumatic experience and try to dampen it down. ” END OF TRAUMA? HEATHCLIFF Saturday’s Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 IN BRIEF Title on hold as Barcelona lose MADRID: Barcelona missed a glorious chance to close in on the Spanish league title after falling to a shock 2-1 defeat at Real Sociedad as their 32-match unbeaten league run came to an end. Pep Guardiola's side could have moved to within one point of a third successive league crown with victory after rivals Real Madrid suffered a surprise 32 home loss to Real Zaragoza earlier. Instead, the champions now need four points from their final four games to retain the title. Barcelona took the lead through Thiago Alcantra on 29 minutes, but Uruguayan substitute Diego Ifran equalised on 71 minutes and Xabi Prieto converted an 82nd-minute penalty to give strugglers Sociedad a vital win. It was Barcelona's first away defeat of the season and their first in the league since midSeptember, although they retain their eight-point cushion over Real at the summit. Qureshi, Bopanna out of Estoril Open ESTORIL (Portugal): Top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi crashed out of the Estoril Open after losing in straight sets to America's Eric Butorac and Rojer Jean-Julien of Netherlands Antilles. The Indo-Pak pair lost 2-6, 4-6 to their third seed rivals in the semifinals of the euro 450,000 ATP clay court event. Eric and Roger will now clash with Spanish team of Marc Lopez and David Marrero in the summit clash. Bopanna and Qureshi earned 90 points each and split 6300 euros for reaching the last four. LEETHAL WEAPON! SPORTS By Sabi Hussain N EW DELHI: World number one Lee Chong Wei continued his dominance over Peter Gade Christensen in the Super Series events to win the men's singles title in the inaugural Indian Open badminton championship here. The two-time All England champion, Lee prevailed over world number six and third seed Gade 21-12, 12-21, 21-15 in a hard-fought contest to pocket the winner's prize of USD 15,000 at the Siri Fort Complex. In the women's singles final, Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk had a comparatively easy outing as she beat third-seeded South Korean Youn Joo Bae 21-13, 21-16 in 31 minutes. The capacity crowd present inside the venue could not have asked for better showdown between the two titans of badminton world as both came out with every shot in the book to highlight their supremacy over each other. Gade's athleticism was in full display as he did not allow the reigning All England champion Lee to make the clash a one-sided affair. The 34-year-old Gade, whose passage to the final was a result of lot of hard work coupled with experience, was in his prime form today as on many occassions he retrieved the shuttle from near impossible positions at the back court during the long rallies and also unleashed flurry of smashes, much to the delight of weekend crowd. Lee has played Gade 12-time earlier in his career and has lost only once during the 2009 Korea Super Series. In the first game, Gade was up on his feet during the long rallies and opened up a narrow 4-2 lead but Lee reduced the gap with better net-play and finished off the first game in style with a drop at 21-12. Gade then showed his age-defying fitness in the second game to level scores at. He widened the gap with his controlled long rallies and did not allow Lee to make a comeback into the game. The third and final game was no different as both players in- SMASHING SUCCESS: Lee Chong Wei leaps high to uncork a full-blooded smash. Gangjee misses cut in golf tourney VALDISTA (Georgia): Indian golfer Rahil Gangjee carded a disappointing two-over 73 in the second round to miss his third cut in four starts, at the Nationwide Tour's South Georgia Classic here. Gangjee opened his second round with a birdie but three bogeys after that - one on front nine and two on back nine, -- spoiled his chances despite another birdie on 17th. His 73 could not make up for his first-round 77. This was Gangjee's third missed cut in four starts. The best being a tied 30th in Panama Championships. At the 7,781-yard, par-72 Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, the Nationwide Tour's longest course, Michael Letzig, Matthew Goggin and Jon Mills are tied for the lead at six-under. THUNDEROUS ROAR: Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk exults after her win. Kapur ends 24th, Westwood claims title SEOUL: Shiv Kapur endured a rollercoaster final day, carding an even-par 72 to sign off tied 24th in the Euro 2.2 Million Ballantine's Championship here. Kapur, one of only two Indians to make the cut this week, ended with a fourunder 284 after carding even-par for third and fourth rounds. Gaganjeet Bhullar with three double bogeys had one of the worst rounds of his professional career, ended with an 81 that saw him finish at 12-over for the week and in 69th place. Kapur bogeyed three of his final five holes from third round and then had two bogeys in his first nine of the final round. England's Lee Westwood showed why he is deserving of his world number one status when he shrugged off the challenges of closest rival Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain to win the title. 29 dulged in long rallies and drop shots to increase the lead in their favour. Lee, after initially being locked at 8-8, broke away with big strides to extend the lead to 13-10 and then 19-14 to win the match in the presence of Sports Minsiter of India Ajay Maken. Meanwhile, in an all-Indonesian affair in the mixed doubles final, Tantowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir defeated Fran Kurniawan and Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth 21-18, 23-21. Tantowi and Liliyana beat their countrymen in 43 minutes in the first super series final of the day. This is Indonesia's first Super Series title of the season. The last time Indonesia won a Super Series event was in November last year when Taufik Hidayat clinched the men's singles title in the French Super Series. Gade, seemingly disappointed after losing a close tie, said, "It's been tough match as he is the world number one and full of confidence. He is the best player in the world. If he is selfconfidence like this, he is unbeatable. I was leading in the third game at one stage, but he got the momentum back." I will return to defend my title: Lee Chong Wei By Avishek Roy N EW DELHI: World No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia said he is thrilled to become the first men's singles champion at the India Open Super Series badminton here - and will return to defend his title next year. "I am happy to win the inaugural India Open Super Series. It was a tough match," said Lee. "It was a great tournament and I will be happy to come back and defend my title next year." Asked about the crowd supporting Gade, Lee said: "I am used to it. I play all over the world, in China etc. Sometimes you get the backing of the crowd, sometimes you don't." The Malaysian was all praise for the 34-year-old Gade. "I have a great respect for him (Gade). He is a fighter and at 34 he is still fighting on the court. I don't know what I will be doing at 34," said Lee. Gade said he lost to the best player in the world. "He is unbeatable at the moment. I am happy that if I can take a game against him and that too 21-12, it shows that I am still good," said Gade. "I gave my best. He has tremendous confidence which is difficult to break. But he was shaken when I was leading in the third game. The momentum was with me. But then I gave some easy point. There was a long rally in which I thought he snatched the momentum. "I cannot play too much of an attacking game because he can counter attack. So, I have to strike a fine balance. The game is changing all the time and you have to take the right decisions. One wrong stroke and you will be punished. I had to be in the front of him to win the match and I tried my best," Gade said. 30 SPORTS IN BRIEF ROYALS WIN IS TAYLOR-MADE Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 Two Don Bosco boys selected for Celtic FC camp By Dinesh Sharma OFF TO CELTIC: Mumbai lads Merick Fernandes and Floyd Periera seen with Greg Robertson and Robert Glen. AIPUR: Ross Taylor smashed a quickfire unbeaten 47 as Rajasthan Royals thumped Pune Warriors by six wickets in a thrilling encounter to jump to the top of the table in Indian Premier League here. Taylor, who was dropped when on 31, smashed four boundaries and two sixes in his 35-ball unbeaten knock and shared 52 runs with Ajinkya Rahane (15 not out) for the unseparated fifth wicket to chase down the target of 144 with three balls to spare. At one stage, it looked like Pune would snap their five-match losing streak with the asking rate rising near 11 by the 16th over but Taylor and Rahane kept their nerves as Rajasthan reached 144 for four in 19.3 overs in the match that went down the wire. With the victory today, Rajasthan Royals have won 15 of their 19 matches they had played at Sawai Man Singh Stadium in the IPL so far. They are now on top of IPL table with 11 points from nine matches ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders (10 points from eight matches) and Mumbai Indians (10 from seven). For Pune, who dropped three catches in the match, leg-spinner Rahul Sharma took three for 13 while Alfonso Thomas got one wicket. Left-arm spinner Murali Kartik went wicketless for 41 runs from his four overs. Chasing 144 for a win, the RR openers Shane Watson (12) and Rahul Dravid (18) did not contribute much and that gave Pune a chance before Taylor and Rahane took the game away. Pune started their bowling with Kartik and he could have achieved success in his fourth ball itself but Manish Pandey failed to hold onto a difficult catch and Watson survived. Watson did not, however, stay long as he was out in the fifth MUMBAI: Don Bosco Matunga’s Merick Fernandes and Floyd Pereira are among the 22 players selected on the basis of their performance in the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge to attend the four-day special coaching clinic to be conducted by coaches from Celtic Football Club at the Bal Gangadhar International Residency School from May 1 to 4, 2001. The clinic will be conducted by Greig Robertson – Youth Academy Coach, Celtic FC; Stephen Frail – Youth Academy Head Coach, Celtic FC; Ian Coll – Head Sports Science (Youth Academy), Celtic FC and. Robert Glen – Youth Academy goalkeeping coach. The clinic will be conducted in two sessions. Following this clinic two to four players will be picked to travel and train at the Celtic Football Club in Scotland for ten days. Sukantanagar Vidhya Niketan, Kolkatta, the champions of the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge have the highest representation with 11 players, while runner-up Govt. Sports School, Bangalore have four players, with two from CRPF. Delhi, two form St. Joseph’s Kerala and one from Infant Jesus, Goa. Following are the selected players: (Merick Fernandes, Floyd Pereira (Don Bosco, Mumbai); Brian Rodrigues (Infant Jesus, Goa); Akshay R (GK), Roy Rojas (St.Joseph’s, Kerala); Mohammed Aqib, Mukesh Kumar (CRPF School, Delhi); Michael, Mani Maran R, Anthony Rushith, Shantosh Kumar (Govt. J SKIPPERS SPEAK: Captains Yuvraj Singh and Shane Warne exchange ideas. ON THE ATTACK: Ross Taylor over with Thomas finding his edge with an outswinger for Robin Uthappa to take the catch behind the stumps. Dravid, who hit two flourishing fours early on, later struggled and was dropped by Harpreet Singh in sixth over. But the blunder did not cost Rajasthan Royals dear as Dravid was out in the eighth over with the addition of just four runs to his individual score. The former India captain was caught and bowled by Rahul Sharma in a soft dismissal. RR lost their third wicket in the 11th over in the form of Johan Botha (12) but they were still on course at 59/3. Taylor and Ashok Maneria (29) had some lusty hits mainly off Kartik but the asking rate rose to more than 10 by the end of the 15th over. The explosive New Zealander then changed the complexion of the game with a flurry of big hits though he was lucky to have survived as Nathan McCullum dropped him when on 31. Taylor took 16 runs from Kartik in the 16th over with the help of two fours and a six and the asking rate dropped down nine per over. Rajasthan required 19 from the last two overs but Taylor hit a huge six in the penultimate over to take the game away from Pune. Taylor's younger partner Rahane hit the winning run, a single, to take RR to their third win on the trot. Uthappa, however, lived on the edge and took calculated risk as he hit Rajasthan captain Warne for three fours in the sixth over though he survived confident appeals from the remaining three balls of the over. It was Warne, however, who had the last laugh by dismissing Uthappa in the ninth over as the batsman top-edged while trying a reverse sweep for Yagnik to take the catch. Uthappa's cameo of 35 came from 21 balls and had seven fours in it. Mumbai Indians look to return to winning ways M UMBAI: Smarting from their morale-shattering seven-wicket loss against Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians would look to put behind their disappointment and train their guns on a struggling Kings XI Punjab to return to winning ways in the Indian Premier League. The high-flying Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians, one of the strong favourites for the title, were brought down to the terra firma by Shane Warne-inspired Royals two days ago at Jaipur, owing to the visitors' batting flop show. Batting first, Mumbai were stopped at 94 for eight after their top order simply disintegrated and the lower order led by big-hitting West Indian Kieron Pollard failed to prop up the innings leading to a huge defeat, their second in seven matches and biggest thus far in the tournament. But the hosts would fancy their chances against Punjab, who were occupying the eighth out of 10 spots on the points table following a comprehensive defeat to league toppers Kolkata Knight Riders last night. A victory for Mumbai at the Wankhede stadium would put them back on top of the table and also back on track to become one of the earliest teams to book a berth in the four-strong play-off phase of the tournament starting on May 24. Mumbai were overtaken on the table by the Kolkata Knights last night on net run rate, though both are level on ten points apiece. Tendulkar was simply unstoppable in the first few matches especially after his superb 100 not out against Kochi Tuskers Kerala on April 15 but the senior India batsman performance has dipped in the last two games. With their campaign at the halfway stage in the round-robin stage, Tendulkar would be determined to put the immediate past behind and come up with a match-winning knock. WEST INDIAN SMILE AND AN ACE INDIAN LOOKS OUT FOR MUMBAI: All-rounder Kieron Pollard has ample reason to wear a smile while Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma discuss a pertinent point. SAD BIRTHDAY FOR KALMADI IN CBI CUSTODY N EW DELHI: Known for his pomp and show, sacked CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi today spent a quiet birthday in CBI custody. He was the centre of glitter during the fortnightlong sports extravaganza last year but when it came to his birthday, it was without all the razzmatazz. For a man, who used to make everything a showbiz, his birthday this year was an occasion that was probably only known to CBI sleuths around him. He is also believed to have spent some time with a few family members. Kalmadi, who has been known for high-class parties, turned 67. He was arrested by the CBI on April 25. At present serving an eight-day custody period, the suspended Congress MP from Pune was wished by some CBI officials questioning him in connection with the purchase of Time-Score-Result from Switzerland, agency sources said. Lodged in 12x12 ft room, attached with a latchless washroom, Kalmadi is understood to have met some of his family members. However, no was willing to confirm it. When contacted, Kalmadi's son Sumeer refused to talk about it and said, "Birthdays are private affairs so I would request privacy on this issue." RAINA CHAMPION! Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011 C HENNAI: Powered by a grand knock by Suresh Raina which was complemented by a splendid bowling and batting display by Albie Morkel, Chennai Super Kings packed too many guns to register a facile victory over Deccan Chargers in their IPL league IV match today. Chargers could muster only 144 for 8 although Sohal got off to a flier but with Captain Cool Dhoni mustering his resources well, the remainder of the batsmen failed to really come up with the goods. Earlier a fine half century from Suresh Raina backed by superb slogging by Albie Morkel at the death helped defending champions Chennai Super Kings post commendable 165 for five. While Raina showed signs of returing to form with a 35-ball 59 ON THE GO: CSK skipper M S Dhoni coming up with an advanced attack of his own. By Amanpreet Singh N EW DELHI: After getting a new lease of life in the Indian Premier League with a win over Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Delhi Daredevils would now look to assert their supremacy over the new entrants once again when they square off in their return-leg match here. Delhi thrashed the Tuskers by 38 runs to move to the seventh position in points table from the bottom while Kochi now stand at nine, just above the laggards Pune Warriors. Virender Sehwag's men will carry the psychological advantage into tomorrow's game after having beaten them just two days back in their own den but in Twenty20 a single batsman or bowler can change the complexion of the game and Delhi can't take the Tuskers lightly. Delhi's bowlers have done well with Morne Morkel leading from the front and Irfan Pathan (6x4, 2x6), it was Albie Morkel (19, 6 balls, 3x6) who hit three of the biggest sixes in the penultimate over off Ishant Sharma's (4-0-41-0) bowling to spoil his figures. The last five overs saw CSK smashing 69 runs with Raina, doing the bulk of the scoring. Opting to bat on a slowish track, Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey made quiet start before Pragyan Ojha (3/26) dismissed Vijay. Ojha angled one into Vijay (3, 14 balls) who was cramped for room while going for a cut-shot. Vijay was struggling to keep the scoreboard ticking on a slowish pitch and the dismissal only ended his misery. Raina, who hasn't had a great IPL so far showed lot of composure on a slow track where one found it difficult to readily go after the bowling. At the other end 'Mr Dependable' Hussey went about his job with lot of precision hitting the odd boundary in between a lot of singles and twos. Hussey's batting was an example of how to keep the scoreboard ticking on a difficult track without taking any undue risks. The only blemish was a pull shot which Cameron White dropped at square leg. Hussey saw off the dangerous Ishant Sharma's skiddy first spell and then opened up against the other bowlers. The duo brought up the team's 50 in 8.3 overs and their 50 partnership came off 47 balls. Considering the conditions, the rate at which they scored wasn't bad at all. After adding 60 runs in 8.5 overs when another half century looked imminent for Hussey, he perished mistiming a long hop from Harmeet Singh. Ideally the ball should have sailed over the ropes but Hussey managed to hit down Ishant's throat at deep square leg. Raina was then joined by skipper Dhoni who tucked around a few deliveries before launching on to Amit Mishra hitting him over long for a six. Raina then got into the act swatting the bowler over deep midwicket for another six as 15 runs came off that over. The next over by Harmeet Singh also fetched the defending champions 15 runs with Raina completing a well deserved half century off only 31 balls. K Latif backs Tillakaratne on match-fixing claims ARACHI: Former Pakistan cricket captain Rashid Latif has backed Hashan Tillakaratne after the ex-Sri Lanka skipper came under fire for claiming that Sri Lanka have been involved in match-fixing for almost two decades. Latif, who was a whistleblower in the match-fixing scandal involving Pakistan in the 90s, said Sunday that Tillakaratne knows a lot about the world of match-fixing, adding that he is hoping that a lot of big names would be exposed when he would speak his heart out. "I know him personally, he told me about this (match-fixing) in the 1993-94 as well. Nobody knows the subcontinent players better then him and if he reveals the facts then a lot of former cricketers from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka would be exposed," said Latif. "As far as I know Hashan would honour his commitment and it would be extremely damaging for some ex-players of the subcontinent, but everything will be settled down if a deal struck," stressed Latif, a former Test wicketkeeper REPEAT STORY also gradually getting his touch back but the poor form of the middle-order batsmen is still a worry for the hosts. Whenever Sehwag or David Warner has failed to fire at the top, they have struggled to put enough runs on the board. Venugopal Rao has lost track after some good starts and Naman Ojha is yet to find his feet in the new season. Foreign recruit Travis Birt, who has played just two matches so far, has shown that he has the potential and the team would expect him to make some significant contribution tomorrow. 31 It was Sehwag, who single-handedly shaped Delhi's innings against Kochi with a blistering 80 off 47 balls and the hosts would look up to their skipper for yet another super knock. If Sehwag succeeds in repeating his blitzkrieg at the Feroze Shah stadium tomorrow, there is no doubt that Kochi bowlers will be in for another bad day. Delhi's fortunes would also depend on how Warner, who did extremely well against Kings XI Punjab in an earlier tie, plays against the Kochi pace trio of RP Singh, S Sreesanth and R Vinay Kumar. RP Singh and Sreesanth so far have been succesful in making early inroads and Delhi would be wary of them. Kochi are definitely not looking the same side that beat top teams, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, on the trot after initial couple of losses. The inconsistency of Brendon McCullum at the top has hurt them the most and skipper Mahela Jayawardene may be inclined to do some resuffle in their batting order. Young Ravindra Jadeja has scored runs for the side but it is difficult for him to steer the side everytime. They need Parthiv, who has done okay if not exceptionally well, and Jayawardene himself to stay longer at the crease. Bowling surely is their plus point and Delhi would no doubt turn to their bowlers to snap their three-game losing streak and keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the tournament.
