Seasonal Bird Walk Tales n’ Trails — Winter Solstice Walk Christmas Bird Count Art on View Landscape Reveries by Sharlene Green October 5 through December 28 Sharlene is an associate professor of art at Cuyahoga Community College, West Campus. She follows the tradition of “en plein air” painting — works created in the open air. Several paintings feature scenes from the Shaker Lakes area. Living in northeast Ohio, we’ve all become used to the change in seasons, and often look forward to what each new season will bring. Fall portends lots of changes — children going back to school, animals migrating or preparing to hibernate, leaves changing color, and clear, crisp days and nights. The Nature Center is going through its own seasonal changes. Our summer youth volunteers (all 45 of them!) have left to go back to school after helping tremendously with our summer camps and land management projects. We’re eagerly awaiting the fall blush of flora and fauna in our newly-restored marsh, and the Stearns Trail restoration is moving full steam ahead. Our naturalists are gearing up for a jam-packed series of programs and classes, which will keep our classrooms and trails humming with activity throughout the coming months. Bird banding has begun again, and new birding activities are appearing on our schedule. And when we have a few minutes to spare, we’re all lacing up our running shoes and trying to get in shape for Fall, 2012 our annual Hike & Run on September 22. We thought our summer was incredibly busy, but suddenly we think fall might be even busier! At the Board level, we will be saying a big “thank you” to Michael Novak, who will be stepping down as President in September, and welcoming Cindy Klug to the helm. Organizationally, we are excited to be exploring strategic initiatives that will strengthen our “Place, Programs, and Partnerships” and help us play an even stronger role in the community. Change — both seasonal and organizational — is constant. At the Nature Center, we welcome the seasonal cadence of change, which leads to growth and renewal at all levels. So don’t squirrel away this fall — come out, enjoy the change in seasons, and see what the Nature Center has to offer! Keeping Up on the Trails If you have been to the Nature Center recently, you probably have noticed all the activity on the Stearns Trail. With generous support from the Ingalls Foundation, Sears-Swetland Family Foundation, Hershey Foundation, and all our friends who raised their paddles for our trees and trails at our summer benefit, the restoration of the Stearns Trail is well underway! Decks and bridges have been pressure washed, railings and railroad ties have been replaced, and new gravel has been added. Work will continue in the coming months, as we address drainage issues, complete replacement of timbers and gravel, rebuild deteriorating retaining walls and steps, and make improvements to our observation decks. Please stop by often to see our progress and enjoy our improved Stearns Trail — right here in your backyard. Ken Dessecker from Martini Construction Company applies some finishing touches to a new boardwalk on the Stearns Trail. Friends in the News Outdoor Adventure Camps More than 340 children participated in this summer’s Outdoor Adventure Camps. From Geo-Explorers to Incredible Insects, kids climbed rocks, created works of art, searched for our Marvelous Mammals and learned about Life in a Watershed. Special thanks to our partners at Ruffing Montessori School and the Shaker Historical Society for making this summer great! Donor Spotlight Carla Macklin grew up in Cleveland Heights within a mile of the Nature Center and fondly remembers taking classes here and walking the trails with her parents. Today, Carla can still be found along the same trails but is most likely pushing a stroller on the boardwalk of the All People’s Trail. Since returning to the area a few years ago, Carla and her husband, Craig, have become active and generous Nature Center members and are thrilled to be able to share the Center with their children. In addition to the trails, they have enjoyed Babes in Nature, and daughter Evelyn participated in this past summer camp’s Nature Nursery. Thank you Outdoor Adventure Camp Teen Volunteers! We couldn’t have done it without you! Over the nine weeks of camp these teen volunteers donated a combined total of 1,536 hours! From left to right: Daylan Woods, Isaiah Wiley, Akhil Hill, Sunseray Wen, Kevin Akbar, Zaylon Green, Arden Dyer, Griffen Kerns. In front: Ben Wasman and Maggie Cullina. Carla, who earned a degree in Geological Science and pursued a career in the environmental field including her recent work with the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, credits the Nature Center for nurturing her love of the outdoors. “I was always struck by the Nature Center’s proximity within the city,” she said, “and I love having this natural space by my house.” She brought her appreciation for and expertise in nature to the Nature Center while serving on this summer’s Gem in Your Backyard benefit committee. She and Craig were also table hosts for the evening. Visiting the Nature Center will continue to provide a place of respite and relaxation for Carla during her busy schedule of family activities and managing the children’s clothing pattern design company she recently launched called Clever Charlotte. We hope to see a lot of Carla and her family along the trails and at the many programs, events and classes offered at the Nature Center. Merci by the Marsh! Pop-Up Poetry Leadership donors gathered on a perfect summer evening to celebrate the restoration of the marsh. Kathleen Cerveny, Heights Arts Pop-Up Poet, delighted Pop-Up-Poetry participants by helping them make origami ladybugs with a haiku tucked under the wings, and entertained the audience with a poetry reading at the Nature Center on a recent summer afternoon.
