AVENUE OF THE IMMIGRANTS
LA AVENIDA DE LOS INMIGRANTEES
INTRODUCTION
New York City’s Official
AVENUE OF THE IMMIGRANTS
In honor of the co-naming of Allen Street to the “Avenue of the Immigrants,” this installation
celebrates the contributions of generations of inspired and hard-working immigrants who
transformed this neighborhood.
The Lower East Side design/build workshop, Hester Street Collaborative, engaged students from
local Middle School M.S. 131 to research, design and build the installation through HSC’s Ground
Up program. Over two years, students conducted research and created the “street signs” to
highlight local sites of cultural, historical, religious, and personal significance in the neighborhood, determined through a process of public balloting.
This project was undertaken in conjunction with the UNRAP (United Neighborhoods to Revitalize
Allen and Pike) Coalition and Leroy Street Studio, Architects.
