to see so many people at both events and I have
included reviews and photos of both in this issue.

The
Vicar
Writes...
“Better to
pray than to
disparage!”
1978 was a year of three Popes. Paul vi (elected on
the death of Good Pope John xxiii), John-Paul 1 (who
lived little more than one month after his election),
and John Paul ii (the Polish charismatic bishop). Three
entirely different characters who helped shape the life
of the Church and whose personalities became familiar
in an age of instant communication and easy travel.
Now the world has a Bishop of Rome in Pope Francis
already setting a new agenda by simple day-to-day
actions. The Anglican Communion also has a new
Archbishop in Justin Welby. He is distinctively different
from his predecessors and already challenging in his
engagement with Government and Fiscal institutions.
Both men are concerned for the poor and vulnerable.
Both men face enormous challenges.
The Church of England claims to be both Catholic and
Reformed . It cherishes the fundamentals common
to all in the Christian Tradition: Catholic means
The Bible; Statements of faith or creeds to help us
understand the nature of God; Sacraments to anchor
Faith in the reality of human joy and suffering; and
ordained Ministry to be an example, a model of prayer
and care, a person entrusted by the bishop to teach,
baptise, absolve, and do all the things “Vicars” are
supposed to do and be. Reformed insofar as all these
have to be matched and applied to a world constantly
changing and challenging; And Reforming when the
institution, communities, and people lose the vision,
and tarnish their own and other people’s lives. The
Reformation which has disturbed Christians for
hundreds of years is alive and well – we should not
be surprised at discovering Christians are flawed, we
would be shocked if nothing were said or done.
This is part of the prayer of a previous Archbishop of
Canterbury, William Laud.
Father, we pray for your Church:
Fill it with your truth, and keep it in your peace.
Where it is corrupt, purge it;
Where it is in error direct it;
Where it is right, strengthen and confirm it.
Better to pray than to disparage!
John

Church Council for Abbas, Martinstown and Steepleton.

Any of the above can be approached in the first instance for Baptism, Marriage, Home
Communion or just a visit. The Clergy would welcome being kept informed when people
are ill or in distress. They have answerphones for you to leave a message.
If you want us to remember anything or anyone in the public prayer of the Church, we
would be glad to do this as long as permission of the person involved is assured.
John usually takes Thursdays as his day off.

ANNUAL MEETINGS
Governance in the Church of England is
a partnership of Clergy and Laity.
Churchwardens and members of
Church Council are elected by their
peers.
In committee (The Parochial Church
Council) they share responsibility for
every aspect of the Church’s life.
The relationship is described as
collaborative enabling the church’s
mission and ministry to be effective

THE WINTERBOURNES ANNUAL
PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETING
Sunday 21 April after Church at 11.00
In the Parish of the Winterbournes
• Each Parish Church is entitled to elect TWO Churchwardens.
•
Martinstown LCC AGM
Sunday 7 April after Church at 11.00
Each Parish Church can make nominations to the Winterbournes PCC -TWO from Abbas, TWO from Steepleton, FOUR from Martinstown.
• Each Parish Church elects parishioners to its Local Church Committee.
There are currently two sub-committee
committees which plan and make
recommendations to the PCC. The
WORSHIP COMMITTEE looks ahead to
special days, festivals, and events –and
suggests occasions for lay-led worship.
The MISSION COMMITTEE suggests
annual Charities and promotes them
throughout the year using displays,
posters, and the weekly pewsnews.
The PCC hopes to create a third subcommittee to deal with outreach and
pastoral issues. As yet this has not
been formed.

The Parish of Compton Valence
has a separate Parochial Church
Council and the Annual Meeting
takes place in Compton Valence
Village Hall on Tuesday 14 May at
19.00
Churchwardens are elected for one
year. They are required each year
to be admitted to their office by the
Archdeacon. Canon law limits the
number of consecutive years they
can serve, but in necessity this can
be amended.
The Archdeacon’s Visitation usually
follows this pattern
• the making of the declaration
that the person will faithfully and
diligently perform the duties of the
office (of churchwarden)
• the formal admission to office
• the Archdeacon’s charge
• meeting and talking with other
churchwardens
• personal contact with the
archdeacon and diocesan registrar

note I received from my friend the driver of the
pick up, Ben.
“To all the good and kind people in a village
somewhere near Dorchester from a group of
homeless people, who are forever grateful for the care
and love you have extended to us over the years.”
“I am writing, not very well, to say how much we have
enjoyed the hot food and little treats you have sent,
the Blankets hats gloves, trousers and jumpers we
have just received. We thank you in our prayers daily.
THANK YOU.”
“To the village people who have been kind enough
to donate the items mentioned, provide transport
for the shopping, fetch and carry various goods of
all kinds.”
I, as the co -ordinater wish to say THANK YOU for
your continued help over the past twelve years
with this project. We could not do it without your
generousity and help, at all times in all weathers.
Large furniture to the smallest pair of socks have
all been gratefully received and transported.

At our March meeting, members enjoyed an interesting talk by
Richard Boursnell about the role of the Ambulance Service. The
Ambulance Service in Dorset is now part of a very extensive
organization which stretches from Cornwall to Gloucestershire
and we were particularly interested to learn something about the
role of volunteer local First Responders, based in communities
and trained by the ambulance service in vital life-saving
techniques.
As well as our monthly meetings, other activities include Table
Tennis each Monday afternoon, Keep Fit to Music on Friday
mornings, a monthly Scrabble evening and two book groups.
We currently have two visits planned and all are welcome to come
along. The first is to the Bristol Blue Glass factory on 12th April,
travelling by train. On 26th June, we will be having our Summer
Outing by coach, this year to Wareham, to include a boat trip
down the river and back. Please contact Angela (889628) or Jan
(889738) if you would like to join us for any of these activities.
Next meeting (A.G.M.) – Wednesday 10th April at 6:45 pm.
Members will be helped by Wendy Durrant to create an individual
flower arrangement. Please bring a small vase, greenery and a
few flowers if available – some flowers will be provided.

We currently have seven guides who are
all working very hard on badges. This
term we have awarded the always popular
Chocolate badge, the Confectioners badge,
and four girls have gained their Performing
Arts badge.
Talking of performing arts, the Guiders
recently attended the village pantomime,
which we enjoyed immensely,
unfortunately by the interval we had
decided that its about time the guides
out on some sort of performance for the
Guides
village so a play s currently being written,
watch this space for more news.
We are also currently compiling another quiz,
this will be available in a month or so from
Trent’s Village Stores. Our recipient book
was a great success and we will be printing
some more shortly, we also hope to start
work on a follow up volume. If any of you
who didn’t get a copy are interested, please
enquire at Trent’s Village Stores.
We will have a stall during the open gardens
weekend so come along and see us.
Yours in Guiding...

...and a READER’S REQUEST
I live at Winterbourne Steepleton and have
a slightly unusual request that you may be
able to help me with.
I would like to find a regular supplier of
cross cut shredded paper (the cross cut
bit is important, longer shreds are not
practical). Preferably a business as they
would have this paper in larger quantities
than a personal shredder. I am very
happy to collect every week or whatever is
convenient to the business.
The paper is required for horse bedding,
and is very advantageous to this particular
horse as it is completely dust free.

Arabian Knights Martinstown Village Panto
Reviewed by Harry Crawford
PANTOMIME
“A distinctly English form of entertainment… incorporating cross-dressing, mild sexual innuendo and
buffoonery.”
So reads the definition of pantomime in the contemporary font of all knowledge that is Wikipedia.
Watching The Martinstown Players’ brilliant production of Arabian Knights offered ample helpings
of all of the above, as well as countless more hilarious themes, motifs and running gags which
made for a great evening.
The collective efforts of more than forty people from in or around the area combined to create
twelve memorable scenes – from the wilds of Baghdad to the turnip patches of West Dorset – in
which the wonderful cast could strut its stuff.
Alan Jenkins, the perennial villain of Valley productions, offered endless opportunities for booing,
hissing and general ‘baddy banter’ as the Tyrant of Baghdad, while Kevin Morris’ Dame Dollop
took her place among the great pantheon of panto dames with voluptuous aplomb.
A raucous applause was just reward for Producer Fran Taylor, Director Vince Jones and all those
involved with putting on an excellent production. All of them gave up countless hours to write
scripts, create sets and harness the co-operation of a rather disobedient camel to put on a great
show. All deserve a big “thank you”.

“The best ever...”
Arabian Nights played to three appreciative
audiences, judging by the cheers , boos,
laughter and rounds of applause. “The best
ever” was a frequent comment.
No more will the Ali Babas shuffle
their way through the sand dance. The
belly dancers will never wobble their
bits again - (just as well some might
say), and the Caleb will remain forever
restrained inside his teapot.
The Dame and Pickle have returned
to their hovels in Martinstown and
Tommy is living happily with her Knight
in shining armour (although I expect a
little jousting will take place from time
to time).
And as for the evil Yasmin, she was
last seen rifling through dustbins in
search of an elusive Ali Kat. Ibn dun
has a permanent smile on his face and
Anna Dinextra has gone off in search of
another Pantomime.
Onion Bhaji ‘s working in an Indian
Takeaway, not far from here and
Oshgosh and Babu are stacking shelves
in Tescos.
That’s it. Done and dusted for another
season. The fantastic scenery has been
packed away the costumes hung up,
the props returned to rightful owners.
Lights switched off whilst Vince Jones ,
no longer in search of a whole camel (we
told you, Vince, “it’s behind you!”)can go
and lie down in a darkened room.
So what’s next on the agenda for the
Martinstown Players? A continuation of
the “Coronation Fever? Another Murder
Mystery, perhaps? Wait and see! Watch
this space!

The Dorchester Radio Station
by Terry Hearing
As you drive up the road from Martinstown to
Monkey’s Jump there is a clear view of a range
of white-painted industrial buildings along
the skyline of the A35. These buildings are
really a monument to fifty years of immediate
communication across the world by means of
the Dorchester Radio Station.
In July 1925 officials of the Marconi Company
attended lunch with the Rotary Club of
Dorchester. The Company explained their
astonishing plans to make Dorchester the
base for transmitting messages from the
United Kingdom to New York, Cairo, Japan and
South America.
The great radio scientist, Giulielmo Marconi,
already had many years of achievement behind
him when he discovered the properties of
short-wave radio. He
proposed to the British
government that he
should create and run
a network of radio
stations to provide
communications
across the British
Empire and to the
rest of the world. The
government was happy that he should do
so - except that communications across the
Empire must be under government control.
Accordingly, Dorchester was chosen for the
private commercial and uncontrolled service
to the rest of the world. A separate system was
created for Empire transmissions.
There was of course an existing non-radio
service via the great cables stretching under
the oceans. This was not very reliable and
breakdowns were frequent - radio stations
were much more accessible for repairs, and
were not confined to coasts. Two large halls
were constructed to house the Marconi ShortWave Beam transmitters. Originally the power
required came from big internal combustion
engines, until a mains electricity supply was
provided in 1938.
The transmissions went out through a uniform
line of huge masts, 640 feet apart, and each
287 feet high. At the top of each mast was a
crossarm 90 feet long. Between the masts
and from the crossovers were suspended
great nets of wire forming the beam aerials.
The service to New York opened in December
1927, and other destinations followed including
Japan. The scheme was so successful that
the government arranged for cable and radio
communications to be merged in a company
known as Cable and Wireless Limited.
Commercial development during the 1930s
was brought to a halt by the Second World War,
and the Dorchester Radio Station then took on
great strategic importance. It was obviously
a likely target for bombers, and efforts were
made to camouflage the buildings with huge
canvas covers. Lines of
posts were placed in nearby
fields to deter airborne
landings, but these had to
be dug up and scattered
when it was realised that
the beautiful straight lines
gave bombers an excellent
aiming pattern for the
station. The staff formed a substantial Home
Guard platoon, but in the event there was no
invasion and no bomb-damage.
After the War the commercial service came
under the control of the Post Office, and further
technical development improved output. The
high maintenance costs of beam aerials (which
often suffered storm damage) led to changes
to more robust systems, but in the 1970s the
arrival of satellites and better under-sea cables
led to final closure in 1978.
For many years the redundant buildings
were used by the Friary Press, but that too
has now gone. The Dorchester Radio Station
is indeed a monument to the onward rush
of Communication progress as, nearby, is a
modern telecommunications tower for mobile
phones.

April Fools’ Day
April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many countries on April 1 every
year.
April Fools’ Day, sometimes called All Fools’ Day, is one of the
most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain.
Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons,
while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar.
Not a
lotta
people
know
that...
This month it’s the
origin of April Fools’
Day (one of many
theories) and St
George’s Day...
Ancient cultures, including those of the Romans and Hindus,
celebrated New Year’s Day on or around April 1. It closely follows
the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st) In medieval times,
much of Europe celebrated March 25, the Feast of Annunciation,
as the beginning of the new year.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian
Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar
called for New Year’s Day to be celebrated Jan 1. That year,
France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year’s
day to Jan 1. According to a popular explanation, many people
either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about
it, and continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Other
people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending
them on “fool’s errands” or trying to trick them into believing
something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout
Europe.
St George’s Day
England’s patron saint, a fourth century Christian martyr, is
also patron saint of Georgia and the city of Moscow.
Very little is known about the real St George. He is thought to
have been born into a noble Christian family in the late third
century in Cappadocia, an area which is now in Turkey. He
followed his father’s profession of soldier and became part of
the retinue of the Emperor Diocletian. The emperor ordered
the systematic persecution of Christians and George refused
to take part. In 303, he was himself tortured and executed in
Palestine, becoming an early Christian martyr.
The legend of George slaying a dragon and rescuing an
innocent maiden from death is medieval.
St George’s Day is celebrated in England on 23 April, reputed
to be the day of George’s martyrdom in 303.
Thanks to various sources for these facts.

The Branch Annual Lunch was held for the first time at Highlands End
Leisure Centre, Eype on 14 March. The 3-course meal was enjoyed by
fifty members and their friends amid a startling collection of Fire Brigade memorabilia, ranging from a steam powered pump to wonderfully atmospheric artwork. The venue certainly added to the sense of
occasion and the event was savoured by all concerned.
Our next meeting on Thursday 4 April will hear Richard White’s illustrated talk on “Dorset Expeditionary Society’s” expedition to Kenya.
Starts at 7.30 pm at Portesham Village Hall. Visitors welcomed.
Des Baker will lead a 6-Day privately organised Tour of Lancashire
starting on 19 May based on half board accommodation at 3* Park

beautiful horticultural displays and the roses will be at their best. To
complete your day out there is a well stocked gift shop, plant sales
centre and restaurant. Date for your diary is Thursday 20 June. Book
