STRUCTURE OF A ZIPPER 101
Zippers can be divided into 3 major parts: tape,
teeth (elements) and slider.
Zipper Pull
SLIDER
The slider joins or separates the Teeth (elements)
when the zipper is opened or closed. Various types
of sliders are available depending on use.
TEETH (Elements)
The teeth (also known as elements) are the parts on
each side of a zipper that engage with each other
when passed through the slider.
1-way Separating Zipper
TAPE
The tape is manufactured exclusively for zippers. It
is usually made of polyester, or synthetic fiber
tape.

Zipper Dictionary
be used in separating applications (at least one end must
stay together). Particularly useful for tents, pockets, luggage, packs and pillow cases.
1-Way Separating: Zipper comes completely apart (like a
jacket front) and has one pull on it.
2-Way Separating: Zipper comes completely apart with
two pulls on it (one zips up from the bottom).
Pocket Zippers: Specialized 7" long, #3 coil zippers that
are fastened together permanently at both ends. Useful for
pockets although non-separating zippers or zipper tape
may also be used.
Non-Separating: Only one end of the zipper can come
apart (like a fly zipper).
Locking Pulls: Will not slide on the zipper unless the pull
tab is grasped. Good for fly zippers as well as some garment pockets and neck zippers.
Double Pull: The zipper pull has tabs on both sides for
sleeping bags, tents and reversible garments.
Reversible (Flip-Over) Pull: The zipper pull has a single
tabs which flips over the crown of the pull for reversible
garments or zip-in linings.
Non-Locking Pulls: Do not have a locking pin inside and
will slide without grabbing the pull tab. Used for tents,
packs, most luggage, and many pockets.
Zipper Tape: Continuous zipper sold by the foot. Cannot

• Coil and tooth zippers of the same gauge, say #5,
Zipper pulls generally wear out much faster than the zipper
itself. If your zipper separates behind the pull and there is
no obvious damage to the teeth or coils, you probably just
need a new pull. This could save you major $$ and #!@%
